Καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ ταῦτα καὶ ἀπέθανεν βασιλεύς υἱῶν Ἀμμών, καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Ἀννὼν υἰὸς αὐτοῦ ἀντ’ αὐτοὺ.
Some time later, the king of the Ammonites died and was succeeded by his son Hanun.
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυείδ Ποιήσω ἔλεος μετὰ Ἁννὼν υἱοῦ Ναάς, ὅν τρόπον ἐποίησεν ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ μετ’ἐμοῦ ἔλεος· καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Δαυεὶδ παρακαλέσαι αὐτὸν ὲν χειρὶ τῶν δούλων αὐτοῦ περὶ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ. καὶ παρεγένοντο οἱ παίδες Δαθεὶδ εἰς τὴν γῆν υἱῶν Ἀμμών.
And David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent some of his servants to console Hanun concerning his father. But when they arrived in the land of the Ammonites,
καὶ εἶπον οἱ ἄρχοντες υἱῶν Ἀμμὼν πρὸς Ἁννὼν τὸν κύριον αὐτῶν Μὴ παρὰ τὸ δοξάζειν Δαυεὶδ τὸν πατέρα σου ἐνώπιόν σου, ὅτι ἀπέστειλέν σοι παρακαλοῦντας; ἀλλ’ὅπως οὐχὶ ἐρευνήσωσιν τὴν πόλιν καὶ κατασκοπήσωσιν τας; ἀλλ’ὅπως κατασκέψασθαι αὐτὴν ἀπέστειλεν Δαυεὶδ τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ πρὸς σέ;
the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun their lord, “Just because David has sent you comforters, do you really believe he is showing respect for your father? Has not David instead sent his servants to explore the city, spy it out, and overthrow it?”
καὶ ἔλαβεν Ἁννὼν τοὺς παῖδας Δαυεὶδ καὶ ἐξύρησεν τοὺς πώγωνας αὐτῶν καὶ ἀκέκοψεν τοὺς μανδύας αὐτῶν ἐν τῷ ἡμίσει ἕως τῶν ἰσχίων αὐτῶν,καὶ ἐχαπέστειλεν αὐτούς.
So Hanun took David’s servants, shaved off half of each man’s beard, cut off their garments at the hips, and sent them away.
καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν τῷ Δαυεὶδ ὑπὲρ τῶν ἀνδρῶν, καὶ ἀπέστειλεν εἰς ἀπαντήν αὐτῶν, ὅτι ἦσαν οἱ ἄνδρες ἠτιμασμένοι σφόδρα· καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεύς Καθίσατε ἐν Ἰερειχὼ ἕως τοῦ ἀνατεῖλαι τοὺς πώγωνας ὑμῶν, καὶ ἐπιστραφήσεσθε.
When this was reported to David, he sent messengers to meet the men, since they had been thoroughly humiliated. The king told them, “Stay in Jericho until your beards have grown back, and then return.”
καὶ εἶδαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἀμμὼν ὅτι κατῃσχύνθησαν ὁ λαὸς Δαυείδ· καὶ ἀπέστειλαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἀμμὼν ὅτι κατῃσχύνθησαν Συρίαν καὶ Ῥοώβ, εἴκοσι χιλιάδεκα πεζῶν, καὶ τὸν βασιλέα Ἀμαλήκ, χιλίους ἄνδρας, καὶ Εἰστώβ, δέδεκα χιλιάδας ἀνδρῶν.
When the Ammonites realized that they had become a stench to David, they hired twenty thousand Aramean foot soldiers from Beth-rehob and Zoba, as well as a thousand men from the king of Maacah and twelve thousand men from Tob.
καὶ ἤκουσεν Δαυείδ, καὶ ἀπέστειλεν τὸν Ἰωάβ καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν δύναμιν, τοὺς δυνατούς.
On hearing this, David sent Joab and the entire army of mighty men.
καὶ ἐξῆλθαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἀμμὼν καὶ παρετάξαντο πόλεμον παρὰ τῇ θύρᾳ τῆς πύλης Συρίας Σουβὰ καὶ Ῥοὼβ καὶ Εἰστὼβ καὶ Ἀμαλήκ, μόνοι ἐν ἀγρῷ.
The Ammonites marched out and arrayed themselves for battle at the entrance of the city gate, while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were by themselves in the open country.
καὶ εἶδεν Ιωαβ ὅτι ἐγενήθη πρὸς αὐτὸν ἀντιπρόσωπον τοῦ πολέμου, ἐκ τοῦ κατὰ πρόςωπον ἐξ ἐναντίας καὶ ἐκ τοῦ ὄπισθεν, καὶ ἐπέλεξεν ἐκ πάντων τῶν νεανίσκων Ἰσραήλ, καὶ παρετάξαντο ἐξ ἐναντίας Συρίας.
When Joab saw the battle lines before him and behind him, he selected some of the best men of Israel and arrayed them against the Arameans.
καὶ τὸ κατάλοιπον τοῦ λαοῦ ἔδωκεν ἐν χειρὶ Ἀβειςὰ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ, καὶ παρετάξαντο ἐξ ἐναντίας υἱῶν Ἀμμών,
And he placed the rest of the troops under the command of his brother Abishai, who arrayed them against the Ammonites.
καὶ εἶπεν Ἐὰν κραταιωθῇ Συρία ὑπὲρ ἐμέ, καὶ ἔσεσθέ μοι εἰς σωτηρίαν· καὶ ἐὰν υἱοὶ Ἀμμὼν κραταιωθῶμεν ὑπὲρ σέ, καὶ ἐσόμεθα τ οῦ σῶσαί σε.
“If the Arameans are too strong for me,” said Joab, “then you will come to my rescue. And if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to your rescue.
ἀνδρίζου καὶ καρταιωθῶμεν ὑπὲρ τοῦ λαοῦ ἡμῶν καὶ περὶ τῶν πόλεων τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν, καὶ Κύριος ποιήσει τὸ ἀγαθὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς αὐτοῦ.
Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and for the cities of our God. May the LORD do what is good in His sight.”
καὶ προσῆλθεν Ἰωὰβ καὶ καὶ ὁ λαὸς αὐτοῦ μετ’αὐτοῦ εἰς πόλεμον πρὸς Συρίαν, καὶ ἔφυγαν ἀπὸ προςώπου αὐτοῦ.
So Joab and his troops advanced to fight the Arameans, who fled before him.
καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ Ἀμμὼν εἶδαν ὁτι ἔφυγεν Συρία, και ἔφυγαν ἀπὸ προςώπου Ἀβεισὰ καὶ εἰσῆλθαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν· καὶ ἀνέστρεψαν Ἰωὰβ ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν Ἀμμών, καὶ παρεγένοντο εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ.
When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they too fled before Abishai, and they entered the city. So Joab returned from fighting against the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.
καὶ εἶδεν Συρία ὅτι ἔπταισεν ἔμπροσθεν Ἰσραήλ, καὶ συνήχθησαν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτό.
When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they regrouped.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ἁδραάζαρ καὶ συνήγαγεν τὴν Συρίαν τὴν ἐκ τοῦ πέραν τοῦ ποταμοῦ Χαλαμάκ, καὶ παρεγένοντο Αἱλάμ· καὶ Σωβὰκ ἄρχων τῆς δυνάμεως Ἁδραάζαρ ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν.
Hadadezer sent messengers to bring more Arameans from beyond the Euphrates (note: Hebrew the River), and they came to Helam with Shobach (note: Shobach is a variant of Shophach; see 1 Chronicles 19:16.) the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.
καὶ ἀνηγγέλη τῷ Δαυείδ, καὶ συνήγαγεν τὸν πάντα Ἰσραήλ, καὶ διέβη τὸν Ἰορδάνην καὶ παρεγένοντο εἰς Αἱλάμ· καὶ παρετάξατο Δαυεὶδ ἀπέναντι Συρίας καὶ ἐπολέμησαν μετ’ αὐτοῦ.
When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, and went to Helam. Then the Arameans arrayed themselves against David and fought against him.
καὶ ἔφυγεν Συρία ἀπὸ προςώπου Ἰσραήλ· καὶ ἀνεῖλεν Δαυεὶδ ἐκ τῆς Συρίας ἑπτακόσια ἅρματα καὶ τεσσεράκοντα χιλιάδας ἱππέων· καὶ Σωβὰκ τὸν ἄρχοντα τῆς δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ ἐπάταξεν, καὶ ἀπέθανεν ἐκεῖ.
But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed seven hundred charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers (note: Some LXX manuscripts (see also 1 Chronicles 19:18); Hebrew horsemen). He also struck down Shobach the commander of their army, who died there.
καὶ εἶδαν πάντες οἱ βασιλεῖς οἱ δοῦλοι Ἁδραάζαρ ὅτι ἔπταισαν ἔμπροσθεν Ἰσραήλ, καὶ ηὐτομόλησαν μετὰ Ἰσραὴλ καὶ ἐδούλευσαν αὐτοῖς· καὶ ἐφοβήθη Συρία τοῦ σῶσαι ἔτι τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἀμμών.
When all the kings who were subject to Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and became subject to them. So the Arameans were afraid to help the Ammonites anymore.
