καὶ ἐγένετο ἐπιστρέψαντος τοῦ ἐνιαθτοῦ εἰς τὸν καιρὸντῆς ἐξοδίας τῶν βασιλέων καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Δαυεὶδ τὸν Ἰωὰβ καὶ τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸν πάντα Ἰσραήλ, καὶ διέφθειραν τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἀμμών· καὶ διεκάθισαν ἐπὶ Ῥαββάθ, καὶ Δαυεὶδ ἐκάθισεν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ.
In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war, David sent out Joab and his servants with the whole army of Israel. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah, but David remained in Jerusalem.
Καὶ ἐγένετο πρὸς ἑσπέραν καὶ ἀνέστη Δαυεὶδ ἀπὸ τῆς κοίτης αὐτοῦ καὶ περιεπάτει ἐπὶ τοῦ δώματος τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ εἶδεν γυναῖκα λουομένην ἀπὶ τοῦ δώματος, καὶ ἡ γυνὴ καλὴ τῷ εἴδει σφόδρα.
One evening David got up from his bed and strolled around on the roof of the palace. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing—a very beautiful woman.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Δαυεὶδ καὶ ἐζήτησεν τὴν γυναῖκα, καὶ εἶπεν Οὐχὶ αὕτη Βηρςάβεε θυγάτηρ Ἐλιὰβ γυνὴ Οὐρείου τοῦ Χετταίου;
So David sent and inquired about the woman, and he was told, “This is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam (note: Eliam is a variant of Ammiel; see 1 Chronicles 3:5.) and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.”
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Δαυεὶδ ἀγγέλους καὶ ἔλαβεν αὐτήν, καὶ εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτὴν καὶ ἐκοιμήθη μετ’ αὐτῆς· καὶ αὕτη ἁγιαζομένη ἀπὸ ἀκαθαρςίας αὐτῆς· καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτῆς.
Then David sent messengers to get her, and when she came to him, he slept with her. (Now she had just purified herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned home.
καὶ ἐν γαστρὶ ἔλαβεν ἡ γυνή, καὶ ἀποστείλασα ἀπήγγειλεν τῷ Δαυεὶδ καὶ εἶπεν Ἐγώ εἰμι ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχω.
And the woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant.”
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Ἰωὰβ λέγων Ἀπόστειλον πρὸς μὲ τὸν Οὐρείαν τὸν Χετταῖον· καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ἰωὰβ τὸν Οὐρείαν πρὸς Δαυείδ.
At this, David sent orders to Joab: “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” So Joab sent him to David.
καὶ παραγίνεται Οὐρείας καὶ εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτόν, καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν Δαυεὶδ εἰς εἰρήνην Ἰωὰβ καὶ εἰς εἰρήνην τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ εἰς εἰρήνην τοῦ πολέμου.
When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab and the troops were doing and how the war was going.
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ τῷ Οὐτείᾳ Κατάβηθι εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου καὶ νίψαι τοὺς πόδας σου· καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Οὐρείας ἐξ οἴκου τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ ἄρσις τοῦ βασιλέως.
Then he said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” So Uriah left the palace, and a gift from the king followed him.
καὶ ἐκοιμήθη Οὐρείας παρὰ τῇ θύρᾳ τοῦ βασιλέως μετὰ τῶν δούλων τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ, καὶ οὐ κατέβη εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ.
But Uriah slept at the door of the palace with all his master’s servants; he did not go down to his house.
καὶ ἀνήγγειλαν τῷ Δαυεὶδ λέγοντες ὅτι οὐ κατέβη Οὐρείας εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ. καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Οὐρείαν Οὐχὶ ἐξ ὁδοῦ σὺ ἔρχῃ; τί ὅτι οὐ κατέβης εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου;
And David was told, “Uriah did not go home.” “Haven’t you just arrived from a journey?” David asked Uriah. “Why didn’t you go home?”
καὶ εἶπεν Οὐρείας πρὸς Δαυείδ Ἡ κιβωτὸς καὶ Ἰσραήλ καὶ Ἰούδας κατοικοπυσιν ἐν σκηναῖς, καὶ ὁ κύριός μου Ἰωὰβ καὶ οἱ δοῦλοι τοῦ κυρίου μου ἐπὶ πρόσωπον τοῦ ἀγροῦ παρεμβάλλουσιν· καὶ ἐγὼ εἰσελεύσομαι εἰς τὸν οἶκόν μου φαγεῖν καὶ πιεῖν καὶ κοιμηθῆναι μετὰ τῆς γυναικός μου; πῶν; ζῇ ἡ ψυχή σου, εἰ ποιήσω τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο.
Uriah answered, “The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents (note: Or staying at Sukkoth), and my master Joab and his soldiers are camped in the open field. How can I go to my house to eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As surely as you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing!”
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Οὐρείαν Κάθισον ἐνταῦθα καὶ γε σήμερον, καὶ αὔριον ἐξαποστελῶ σε· καὶ ἐκάθισεν Οὐρείας ἀν Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ καὶ τῇ ἐπαύριον.
“Stay here one more day,” David said to Uriah, “and tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next.
καὶ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτὸν Δαυείδ, καὶ ἔφαγεν ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔπιεν, καὶ ἐμέθυσεν αὐτόν· καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἑσπέρας τοῦ κοιμηθῆναι ἐπὶ τῆς κοίτης αὐτοῦ μετὰ τῶν δούλων τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ οὐ κατέβη.
Then David invited Uriah to eat and drink with him, and he got Uriah drunk. And in the evening Uriah went out to lie down on his cot with his master’s servants, but he did not go home.
καὶ ἐγένετο πρωὶ καὶ ἔγραψεν Δαυεὶδ βιβλίον πρὸς Ἰωάβ, καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ἐν χειρὶ Οὐρείου.
The next morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah.
καὶ ἔγαψεν ἐν βιβλίῳ λέγων Εἰσάγαγε τὸν Οὐρείαν ἐξ ἐναντίας τοῦ πολέμου τοῦ κραταιοῦ, καὶ ἀποστραφήσεσθε ἀπὸ ὄπισθεν αὐτοῦ, καὶ πληγήσεται καὶ ἀποθανεῖται.
In the letter he wrote: “Put Uriah at the front of the fiercest battle; then withdraw from him, so that he may be struck down and killed.”
καὶ ἐγενήθη ἐν τῷ φυλάσσειν Ἰωὰβ ἐπὶ τὴν πόλιν καὶ ἔθηκεν τὸν Οὐρείαν εἰς τὸν τόπον οὗ ᾔδει ὅτι ἄνδρες δυνάμεως ἐκεῖ.
So as Joab besieged the city, he assigned Uriah to a place where he knew the strongest enemy soldiers were.
καὶ ἐξῆλθον οἱ ἄνδρες τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἐπολέμουν μετὰ Ἰωάβ· καὶ ἔπεσαν ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ ἐκ τῶν δούλων Δαυεὶε καὶ ἀπέθαναν, καί γε Οὐρείας ὁ Χετταῖος.
And when the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, some of David’s servants fell, and Uriah the Hittite also died.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ἰωὰρ καὶ ἀπήγγειλεν τῷ βασιλεῖ Δαυεὶδ πάντας τοὺς λόγους τοῦ πολέμου λαλῆσαι πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα.
Joab sent to David a full account of the battle
καὶ ἐνετείλατο τῷ ἀγγέλῳ λέγων Ἐν τῷ συντελέσαι πάντας τοὺς λόγους τοῦ πολέμου λαλῆσαι πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα,
and instructed the messenger, “When you have finished giving the king a full account of the battle,
καὶ ἔσται ἐὰν ἀναβῇ θυμὸς τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ εἴπῃ σοι Τί ὅτι ἠγγίσατε πρὸς τὴν πόλιν πολεμῆσαι; οὐκ ᾔδειτε ὅτι τοξεύσουσιν ἀπάνωθεν τοῦ τείχους;
if the king’s anger flares, he may ask you, ‘Why did you get so close to the city to fight? Did you not realize they would shoot from atop the wall?
τίς ἐπάταξεν τὸν Ἀβειμέλεχ υἱὸν Ἰεροβοὰμ υἱοῦ Νήρ; οὐχὶ γυνὴ ἔρριχεν κλάσμα ἐπ’ αὐτὸν μύλου ἐπάνωνθεν τοῦ τείχους καὶ ἀπέθανεν ἐν θαμασί; ἵνα τί προσηγάγετε πρὸς τὸ τεῖχος; καὶ ἐρεῖς Καί γε Οὐρείας ὁ δοῦλός σου ὁ Χετταῖος ἀπέθανεν.
Who struck Abimelech son of Jerubbesheth (note: Jerubbesheth is also known as Jerubbaal, that is, Gideon.)? Was it not a woman who dropped an upper millstone on him from the wall, so that he died in Thebez? Why did you get so close to the wall?’ If he asks you this, then you are to say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead as well.’”
καὶ ἐπορεύθη ὁ ἄγγελος Ἰωὰβ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ παρεγένετο καὶ ἀπήγγειλεν τῷ Δαυεὶδ πάντα ὅσα ἀπήγγειλεν αὐτω Ἰωάβ, πάντα τὰ ῥήματα τοῦ πολέμου. καὶ ἐθυμώθη Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Ἰωάβ, και εἲπεν πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον ἵωα τί προσηγάγετε πρὸς τὴν πόλιν τοῦ πολεμῆσαι; οὐκ ᾔδειτε ὅτι πληγήσεσθε ἀπὸ τοῦ τείχους;τίς ἐπάταξεν τὸν Ἀβειμέλεχ υἱὸν Ἰεροβοάμ; οὐχὶ γυνη ἔρριψεν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν κλάσμα μύλου ἀπὸ τοῦ τείχους καὶ ἀπέθανεν ἐν θαμασί;ἵνα τί προσηγάγετε πρὸς τὸ τεῖχος;
So the messenger set out and reported to David all that Joab had sent him to say.
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἄγγελος πρὸς Δαυείδ Ὅτι ἐκραταίωσαν ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς οἱ ἄν δρες καὶ ἐξῆλθαν ἐφ᾽ ἡμᾶς εἰς τὸν ἀγρόν,καὶ ἐγενήθημεν ἐπ᾽ αὐτοὺς ἕως τῆς θύρας τῆς πύλης.
The messenger said to David, “The men overpowered us and came out against us in the field, but we drove them back to the entrance of the gate.
καὶ ἐτόξευσαν οἱ τοξεύοντες πρὸς τοὺς παῖδάς σου ἀπάνωθεν τοῦ τείχους, καὶ ἀπέθαναν τῶν παίδων τοῦ βασιλέως, καί γε ὁ δοὐλός σου Οὐρείας ὁ Χετταῖος ἀπέθανεν.
Then the archers shot at your servants from the wall, and some of the king’s servants were killed. And your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead as well.”
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον Τάδε ἐρεῖς πρὸς Ἰωάβ Μὴ πονηρὸν ἔστω ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο, ὅτι ποτὲ μὲν οὕτως καὶ ποτὲ οὕτως φάγεται ἡ μαχαιρα· κραταίωσον τὸν πολεμόν σου πρὸς τὴν πόλιν καὶ κατάσπασον αὐτήν· καὶ κραταίωσον αὐτόν.
Then David told the messenger, “Say this to Joab: ‘Do not let this matter upset you, for the sword devours one as well as another. Strengthen your attack against the city and demolish it.’ Encourage him with these words.”
καὶ ἤκουσεν ἡ γυνὴ Οὐρείου ὅτι ἀέθανεν Οὐρειας ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς, καὶ ἐκόψατο τὸν ἄνδρα αυτῆς.
When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him.
καὶ διῆλθεν τὸ πένθος, καὶ απέστελιεν Δαυεὶδ καὶ συνήγαγεν αὐτὴν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐγενήθη αὐτῷ εἰς γυναῖκα καὶ ἔτεκεν αὐτῷ υἱόν· καὶ πονηρὸν ἐφάνη τὸ ῥῆμα ὅ ἐποίησεν Δαυεὶδ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς Κυρίου. Καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Κύριος τὸν Ναθὰν τὸν προφήτην πρὸς
And when the time of mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done was evil in the sight of the LORD.
