Jésus étant né à Bethléem de Judée, aux jours du roi Hérode, voici que des Mages arrivèrent d'Orient à Jérusalem,
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,
disant : " Où est le roi des Juifs qui vient de naître ? Car nous avons vu son étoile en Orient, et nous sommes venus l'adorer. "
asking, “Where is the One who has been born King of the Jews? We saw His star in the east (note: Or as it rose) and have come to worship Him.”
Ce que le roi Hérode ayant appris, il fut troublé, et tout Jérusalem avec lui.
When King Herod heard this, he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.
Il assembla tous les Princes des prêtres et les Scribes du peuple, et s'enquit auprès d'eux où devait naître le Christ.
And when he had assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ was to be born.
Ils lui dirent : " A Bethléem de Judée, selon ce qui a été écrit par le prophète :
“In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
Et toi, Bethléem, terre de Juda, tu n'es pas la moindre parmi les principales villes de Juda, car de toi sortira un Chef qui doit paître Israël, mon peuple. "
‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of My people Israel (note: Micah 5:2; see also 2 Samuel 5:2.).’”
Alors Hérode, ayant fait venir secrètement les Mages, apprit d'eux la date précise à laquelle l'étoile était apparue.
Then Herod called the Magi secretly and learned from them the exact time the star had appeared.
Et il les envoya à Bethléem en disant : " Allez, informez-vous exactement de l'Enfant, et lorsque vous l'aurez trouvé, faites-le-moi savoir, afin que moi aussi j'aille l'adorer. "
And sending them to Bethlehem, he said: “Go and search carefully for the Child, and when you find Him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship Him.”
Ayant entendu les paroles du roi, ils partirent. Et voilà que l'étoile qu'ils avaient vue en Orient allait devant eux, jusqu'à ce que, venant au-dessus du lieu où était l'Enfant, elle s'arrêta.
After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stood over the place where the Child was.
A la vue de l'étoile, ils se réjouirent d'une grande joie.
When they saw the star, they rejoiced with great delight.
Ils entrèrent dans la maison, trouvèrent l'Enfant avec Marie, sa mère, et, se prosternant, ils l'adorèrent ; puis, ouvrant leurs trésors, ils lui offrirent en présent de l'or, de l'encens et de la myrrhe.
On coming to the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.
Mais ayant été avertis en songe de ne point retourner vers Hérode, ils regagnèrent leur pays par un autre chemin.
And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they withdrew to their country by another route.
Après leur départ, voici qu'un ange du Seigneur apparut à Joseph pendant son sommeil, et lui dit : " Lève-toi, prends l'Enfant et sa mère, fuis en Egypte et restes-y jusqu'à ce que je t'avertisse ; car Hérode va rechercher l'Enfant pour le faire périr. "
When the Magi had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up!” he said. “Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the Child to kill Him.”
Joseph se leva, et la nuit même, prenant l'Enfant avec sa mère, il se retira en Egypte.
So he got up, took the Child and His mother by night, and withdrew to Egypt,
Et il y resta jusqu'à la mort d'Hérode, afin que s'accomplît ce qu'avait dit le Seigneur par le Prophète : " J'ai rappelé mon fils d'Egypte. "
where he stayed until the death of Herod. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called My Son (note: Hosea 11:1).”
Alors Hérode, voyant que les Mages s'étaient joués de lui, entra dans une grande colère, et envoya tuer tous les enfants qui étaient dans Bethléem et dans les environs, depuis l'âge de deux ans et au-dessous, d'après la date qu'il connaissait exactement par les Mages.
When Herod saw that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was filled with rage. Sending orders, he put to death all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, according to the time he had learned from the Magi.
Alors fut accompli l'oracle du prophète Jérémie disant :
Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
Une voix a été entendue dans Rama, des plaintes et des cris lamentables : Rachel pleure ses enfants ; et elle n'a pas voulu être consolée, parce qu'ils ne sont plus.
“A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more (note: Jeremiah 31:15).”
Hérode étant mort, voici qu'un ange du Seigneur apparut en songe à Joseph dans la terre d'Egypte,
After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt.
et lui dit : " Lève-toi, prends l'Enfant et sa mère, et va dans la terre d'Israël, car ceux qui en voulaient à la vie de l'Enfant sont morts. "
“Get up!” he said. “Take the Child and His mother and go to the land of Israel, for those seeking the Child’s life are now dead.”
Joseph s'étant levé, prit l'Enfant et sa mère, et vint dans la terre d'Israël.
So Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and went to the land of Israel.
Mais, apprenant qu'Archélaüs régnait en Judée à la place d'Hérode, son père, il n'osa y aller, et, ayant été averti en songe, il se retira dans la Galilée
But when he learned that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee,
et vint habiter une ville nommée Nazareth, afin que s'accomplît ce qu'avaient dit les prophètes : " Il sera appelé Nazaréen. "
and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophets: “He will be called a Nazarene.”
