Et convocatis duodecim discipulis suis, dedit illis potestatem spirituum immundorum, ut ejicerent eos, et curarent omnem languorem, et omnem infirmitatem.
And calling His twelve disciples to Him, Jesus gave them authority over unclean spirits, so that they could drive them out and heal every disease and sickness.
Duodecim autem Apostolorum nomina sunt hæc. Primus, Simon, qui dicitur Petrus : et Andreas frater ejus,
These are the names of the twelve apostles: first Simon, called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John;
Jacobus Zebedæi, et Joannes frater ejus, Philippus, et Bartholomæus, Thomas, et Matthæus publicanus, Jacobus Alphæi, et Thaddæus,
Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;
Simon Chananæus, et Judas Iscariotes, qui et tradidit eum.
Simon the Zealot (note: Greek Simon the Cananean), and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus.
Hos duodecim misit Jesus, præcipiens eis, dicens : In viam gentium ne abieritis, et in civitates Samaritanorum ne intraveritis :
These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go onto the road of the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.
Euntes autem prædicate, dicentes : Quia appropinquavit regnum cælorum.
As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’
Infirmos curate, mortuos suscitate, leprosos mundate, dæmones ejicite : gratis accepistis, gratis date.
Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.
Nolite possidere aurum, neque argentum, neque pecuniam in zonis vestris :
Do not take along any gold or silver or copper in your belts.
non peram in via, neque duas tunicas, neque calceamenta, neque virgam : dignus enim est operarius cibo suo.
Take no bag for the road, or second tunic, or sandals, or staff; for the worker is worthy of his provisions.
In quamcumque autem civitatem aut castellum intraveritis, interrogate, quis in ea dignus sit : et ibi manete donec exeatis.
Whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy there and stay at his house until you move on.
Intrantes autem in domum, salutate eam, dicentes : Pax huic domui.
As you enter the home, greet its occupants.
Et siquidem fuerit domus illa digna, veniet pax vestra super eam : si autem non fuerit digna, pax vestra revertetur ad vos.
If the home is worthy, let your peace rest on it, but if it is not, let your peace return to you.
Et quicumque non receperit vos, neque audierit sermones vestros : exeuntes foras de domo, vel civitate, excutite pulverem de pedibus vestris.
And if anyone will not welcome you or heed your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town.
Amen dico vobis : Tolerabilius erit terræ Sodomorum et Gomorrhæorum in die judicii, quam illi civitati.
Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.
Ecce ego mitto vos sicut oves in medio luporum. Estote ergo prudentes sicut serpentes, et simplices sicut columbæ.
Behold, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
Cavete autem ab hominibus. Tradent enim vos in conciliis, et in synagogis suis flagellabunt vos :
But beware of men, for they will hand you over to their councils and flog you in their synagogues.
et ad præsides, et ad reges ducemini propter me in testimonium illis, et gentibus.
On My account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.
Cum autem tradent vos, nolite cogitare quomodo, aut quid loquamini : dabitur enim vobis in illa hora, quid loquamini :
But when they hand you over, do not worry about how to respond or what to say. In that hour you will be given what to say.
non enim vos estis qui loquimini, sed Spiritus Patris vestri, qui loquitur in vobis.
For it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Tradet autem frater fratrem in mortem, et pater filium : et insurgent filii in parentes, et morte eos afficient :
Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rise against their parents and have them put to death.
et eritis odio omnibus propter nomen meum : qui autem perseveraverit usque in finem, hic salvus erit.
You will be hated by everyone because of My name, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
Cum autem persequentur vos in civitate ista, fugite in aliam. Amen dico vobis, non consummabitis civitates Israël, donec veniat Filius hominis.
When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next. Truly I tell you, you will not reach all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
Non est discipulus super magistrum, nec servus super dominum suum :
A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.
sufficit discipulo ut sit sicut magister ejus, et servo, sicut dominus ejus. Si patremfamilias Beelzebub vocaverunt, quanto magis domesticos ejus ?
It is enough for a disciple to be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul (note: WH Beezeboul; Vulgate Beelzebub), how much more the members of his household!
Ne ergo timueritis eos. Nihil enim est opertum, quod non revelabitur : et occultum, quod non scietur.
So do not be afraid of them. For there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, and nothing hidden that will not be made known.
Quod dico vobis in tenebris, dicite in lumine : et quod in aure auditis, prædicate super tecta.
What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the housetops.
Et nolite timere eos qui occidunt corpus, animam autem non possunt occidere : sed potius timete eum, qui potest et animam et corpus perdere in gehennam.
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell (note: Greek Gehenna).
Nonne duo passeres asse veneunt ? et unus ex illis non cadet super terram sine Patre vestro.
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny (note: Greek an assarion; that is, a Roman copper coin worth about 1/16 of a denarius)? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.
Vestri autem capilli capitis omnes numerati sunt.
And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Nolite ergo timere : multis passeribus meliores estis vos.
So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Omnis ergo qui confitebitur me coram hominibus, confitebor et ego eum coram Patre meo, qui in cælis est.
Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father in heaven.
Qui autem negaverit me coram hominibus, negabo et ego eum coram Patre meo, qui in cælis est.
But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father in heaven.
Nolite arbitrari quia pacem venerim mittere in terram : non veni pacem mittere, sed gladium :
Do not assume that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
veni enim separare hominem adversus patrem suum, et filiam adversus matrem suam, et nurum adversus socrum suam :
For I have come to turn ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
et inimici hominis, domestici ejus.
A man’s enemies will be the members of his own household (note: Micah 7:6).’
Qui amat patrem aut matrem plus quam me, non est me dignus : et qui amat filium aut filiam super me, non est me dignus.
Anyone who loves his father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me;
Et qui non accipit crucem suam, et sequitur me, non est me dignus.
and anyone who does not take up his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me.
Qui invenit animam suam, perdet illam : et qui perdiderit animam suam propter me, inveniet eam.
Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
Qui recipit vos, me recipit : et qui me recipit, recipit eum qui me misit.
He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives the One who sent Me.
Qui recipit prophetam in nomine prophetæ, mercedem prophetæ accipiet : et qui recipit justum in nomine justi, mercedem justi accipiet.
Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward.
Et quicumque potum dederit uni ex minimis istis calicem aquæ frigidæ tantum in nomine discipuli : amen dico vobis, non perdet mercedem suam.
And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is My disciple, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.”
