En ces jours-là fut publié un édit de César Auguste, pour le recensement de toute la terre.
Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that a census should be taken of the whole empire (note: Or of the whole land or of the whole world).
Ce premier recensement eut lieu pendant que Quirinius commandait la Syrie.
This was the first census to take place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.
Et tous allaient se faire recenser, chacun dans sa ville.
And everyone went to his own town to register.
Joseph monta de Galilée, de la ville de Nazareth, en Judée, à la ville de David, appelée Bethléem, parce qu'il était de la maison et de la famille de David,
So Joseph also went up from Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, since he was from the house and line of David.
pour être recensé avec Marie son épouse, qui était enceinte.
He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to him in marriage and was expecting a child.
Or, pendant qu'ils étaient en ce lieu, le temps où elle devait enfanter s'accomplit.
While they were there, the time came for her Child to be born.

And she gave birth to her firstborn, a Son. She wrapped Him in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Il y avait aux environs des bergers qui passaient la nuit aux champs, veillant à la garde de leur troupeau.
And there were shepherds residing in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks by night.
Tout à coup un ange du Seigneur parut auprès d'eux et le rayonnement de la gloire du Seigneur les environna, et ils furent saisis d'une grande crainte.
Just then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
Mais l'ange leur dit : " Ne craignez point, car je vous annonce une nouvelle qui sera pour tout le peuple une grande joie.
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid! For behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people:
Il vous est né aujourd'hui, dans la ville de David, un Sauveur, qui est le Christ Seigneur.
Today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord!
Et voici ce qui vous servira de signe : vous trouverez un nouveau-né enveloppé de langes et couché dans une crèche. "
And this will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”
Au même instant, se joignit à l'ange une troupe de la milice céleste, louant Dieu et disant :
And suddenly there appeared with the angel a great multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying:
" Gloire, dans les hauteurs, à Dieu ! Et, sur la terre, paix aux hommes, Objet de la bienveillance divine ! "
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests!”
Lorsque les anges, remontant au ciel, les eurent quittés, les bergers se dirent les uns aux autres : " Passons jusqu'à Bethléem, et voyons cet événement qui est arrivé, et que le Seigneur nous a fait savoir. "
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”
Ils s'y rendirent en toute hâte, et trouvèrent Marie, Joseph, et le nouveau-né couché dans la crèche.
So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and the Baby, who was lying in the manger.
Après l'avoir vu, ils publièrent la révélation qui leur avait été faite au sujet de cet Enfant.
After they had seen the Child, they spread the message they had received about Him.
Et tous ceux qui les entendirent furent dans l'admiration de ce que leur disaient les bergers.
And all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.
Or Marie conservait avec soin toutes ces choses, les méditant dans son cœur.
But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.
Et les bergers s'en retournèrent, glorifiant et louant Dieu de tout ce qu'ils avaient vu et entendu, selon ce qui leur avait été annoncé.
The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, which was just as the angel had told them.
Les huit jours étant accomplis, pour la circoncision de l'Enfant, il fut appelé Jésus, nom que l'ange lui avait donné avant qu'il eût été conçu dans le sein maternel.
When the eight days before His circumcision had passed, He was named Jesus, the name the angel had given Him before He was conceived.
Puis, lorsque les jours de leur purification furent accomplis, selon la loi de Moïse, Marie et Joseph portèrent l'Enfant à Jérusalem pour le présenter au Seigneur,
And when the time of purification according to the Law of Moses was complete, His parents brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord
suivant ce qui est écrit dans la loi du Seigneur : " Tout mâle premier-né sera consacré au Seigneur " ;
(as it is written in the Law of the Lord (note: Exodus 13:2): “Every firstborn male shall be consecrated to the Lord”),
et pour offrir en sacrifice, ainsi que le prescrit la loi du Seigneur, une paire de tourterelles, ou deux petites colombes.
and to offer the sacrifice specified in the Law of the Lord: “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons (note: Leviticus 12:8).”
Or, il y avait à Jérusalem un homme nommé Siméon ; c'était un homme juste et craignant Dieu, qui attendait la consolation d'Israël, et l'Esprit-Saint était sur lui.
Now there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
L'Esprit-Saint lui avait révélé qu'il ne mourrait point avant d'avoir vu le Christ du Seigneur.
The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
Il vint donc dans le temple, poussé par l'Esprit. Et comme les parents apportaient le petit Enfant Jésus, pour observer les coutumes légales à son égard,
Led by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. And when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for Him what was customary under the Law,
lui aussi, il le reçut entre ses bras, et bénit Dieu en disant :
Simeon took Him in his arms and blessed God, saying:
" Maintenant, ô Maître, vous laissez partir votre serviteur En paix, selon votre parole ;
“Sovereign Lord, as You have promised, You now dismiss Your servant in peace.
Que vous avez préparé à la face de tous les peuples :
which You have prepared in the sight of all people,
Lumière qui doit dissiper les ténèbres des Nations Et gloire d'Israël, votre peuple. "
a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to Your people Israel.”
Le père et la mère de l'Enfant étaient dans l'admiration des choses que l'on disait de lui.
The Child’s father and mother were amazed at what was spoken about Him.
Et Siméon les bénit et dit à Marie, sa mère : " Cet Enfant est au monde pour la chute et la résurrection d'un grand nombre en Israël, et pour être un signe en butte à la contradiction ; —
Then Simeon blessed them and said to His mother Mary: “Behold, this Child is appointed to cause the rise and fall of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against,
vous-même, un glaive transpercera votre âme ; — et ainsi seront révélées les pensées cachées dans le cœur d'un grand nombre. "
so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your soul as well.”
Il y avait aussi une prophétesse, Anne, fille de Phanuel, de la tribu d'Aser ; elle était fort avancée en âge, ayant vécu, depuis sa virginité, sept ans avec son mari.
There was also a prophetess named Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher, who was well along in years. She had been married for seven years,
Restée veuve, et parvenue à quatre-vingt-quatre ans, elle ne quittait point le temple, servant Dieu nuit et jour dans le jeûne et dans la prière.
and then was a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.
Elle aussi, survenant à cette heure, se mit à louer le Seigneur et à parler de l'Enfant à tous ceux qui, à Jérusalem, attendaient la rédemption.
Coming forward at that moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the Child to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.
Lorsqu'ils eurent tout accompli selon la loi du Seigneur, ils retournèrent en Galilée, à Nazareth, leur ville.
When Jesus’ parents had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth.
Cependant l'Enfant croissait et se fortifiait, étant rempli de sagesse, et la grâce de Dieu était sur lui.
And the Child grew and became strong (note: BYZ and TR became strong in spirit). He was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon Him.
Or ses parents allaient tous les ans à Jérusalem, à la fête de Pâque.
Every year His parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover.
Quand il eut atteint sa douzième année, ils y montèrent, selon la coutume de cette fête ;
And when He was twelve years old, they went up according to the custom of the Feast.
et lorsqu'ils s'en retournèrent, les jours de la fête étant passés, l'Enfant Jésus resta dans la ville, sans que ses parents s'en fussent aperçus.
When those days were over and they were returning home, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but His parents were unaware He had stayed.
Pensant qu'il était avec leurs compagnons de voyage, ils marchèrent tout un jour, puis ils le cherchèrent parmi leurs parents et leurs connaissances.
Assuming He was in their company, they traveled on for a day before they began to look for Him among their relatives and friends.
Ne l'ayant point trouvé, ils retournèrent à Jérusalem pour le chercher.
When they could not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for Him.
Au bout de trois jours, ils le trouvèrent dans le temple, assis au milieu des docteurs, les écoutant et les interrogeant.
Finally, after three days they found Him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.
Et tous ceux qui l'entendaient étaient ravis de son intelligence et de ses réponses.
And all who heard Him were astounded at His understanding and His answers.
En le voyant, ils furent étonnés ; et sa mère lui dit : " Mon enfant, pourquoi avez-vous agi ainsi avec nous ? Votre père et moi, nous vous cherchions tout affligés. "
When His parents saw Him, they were astonished. “Child, why have You done this to us?” His mother asked. “Your father and I have been anxiously searching for You.”
Et il leur répondit : " Pourquoi me cherchiez-vous ? Ne saviez-vous pas qu'il faut que je sois aux choses de mon Père ? "
“Why were you looking for Me?” He asked. “Did you not know that I had to be in My Father’s house?”
Mais ils ne comprirent pas ce qu'il leur disait.
But they did not understand the statement He was making to them.
Alors il descendit avec eux, et vint à Nazareth, et il leur était soumis. Et sa mère conservait toutes ces choses dans son cœur.
Then He went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But His mother treasured up all these things in her heart.
Et Jésus progressait en sagesse, en taille et en grâce devant Dieu et devant les hommes.
And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.
