Sintemalbedeutet: weil, da nun sich's viele unterwunden haben, Bericht zu geben von den Geschichten, so unter uns ergangen sind,
Many have undertaken to compose an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us,
wie uns das gegeben haben, die es von Anfang selbst gesehen und Diener des Worts gewesen sind:
just as they were handed down to us by the initial eyewitnesses and servants of the word.
habe ich's auch für gut angesehen, nachdem ich's alles von Anbeginn mit Fleiß erkundet habe, dass ich's dir, mein guter Theophilus, in Ordnung schriebe,
Therefore, having carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,
auf das du gewissen Grund erfahrest der Lehre, in welcher du unterrichtet bist.
so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.
Zu der Zeit des Herodes, des Königs von Judäa, war ein Priester von der Ordnung Abia, mit Namen Zacharias, und sein Weib war von den Töchtern Aarons, welche hieß Elisabeth.
In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah, and whose wife Elizabeth was a descendant of Aaron.
Sie waren aber alle beide fromm vor Gott und wandelten in allen Geboten und Satzungen des Herrn untadelig.
Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and decrees of the Lord.
Und sie hatten kein Kind; denn Elisabeth war unfruchtbar, und waren beide wohl betagt.
But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well along in years.
Und es begab sich, da er des Priesteramtes pflegte vor Gott zur Zeit seiner Ordnung,
One day while Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,
nach Gewohnheit des Priestertums, und an ihm war, dass er räuchern sollte, ging er in den Tempel des Herrn.
he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
Und die ganze Menge des Volks war draußen und betete unter der Stunde des Räucherns.
And at the hour of the incense offering, the whole congregation was praying outside.
Es erschien ihm aber der Engel des Herrn und stand zur rechten Hand am Räucheraltar.
Just then an angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.
Und als Zacharias ihn sah, erschrak er, und es kam ihn eine Furcht an.
When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and gripped with fear.
Aber der Engel sprach zu ihm: Fürchte dich nicht, Zacharias! denn dein Gebet ist erhört, und dein Weib Elisabeth wird dir einen Sohn gebären, des Namen sollst du Johannes heißen.
But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John.
Und du wirst des Freude und Wonne haben, und viele werden sich seiner Geburt freuen.
He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice at his birth,
Denn er wird groß sein vor dem Herrn; Wein und starkes Getränk wird er nicht trinken und wird noch im Mutterleibe erfüllt werden mit dem heiligen Geist.
for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He shall never take wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb.
Und er wird der Kinder Israel viele zu Gott, ihrem Herrn, bekehren.
Many of the sons of Israel he will turn back to the Lord their God.
Und er wird vor ihm her gehen im Geist und Kraft des Elia, zu bekehren die Herzen der Väter zu den Kindern und die Ungläubigen zu der Klugheit der Gerechten, zuzurichten dem Herrn ein bereitet Volk.
And he will go on before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
Und Zacharias sprach zu dem Engel: Wobei soll ich das erkennen? Denn ich bin alt und mein Weib ist betagt.
“How can I be sure of this?” Zechariah asked the angel. “I am an old man, and my wife is well along in years.”
Der Engel antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Ich bin Gabriel, der vor Gott steht, und bin gesandt, mit dir zu reden, dass ich dir solches verkündigte.
“I am Gabriel,” replied the angel. “I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.
Und siehe, du wirst verstummen und nicht reden können bis auf den Tag, da dies geschehen wird, darum dass du meinen Worten nicht geglaubt hast, welche sollen erfüllt werden zu ihrer Zeit.
And now you will be silent and unable to speak until the day this comes to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their proper time.”
Und das Volk wartete auf Zacharias und verwunderte sich, dass er so lange im Tempel verzog.
Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he took so long in the temple.
Und da er herausging, konnte er nicht mit ihnen reden; und sie merkten, dass er ein Gesicht gesehen hatte im Tempel. Und er winkte ihnen und blieb stumm.
When he came out and was unable to speak to them, they realized he had seen a vision in the temple. He kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.
Und es begab sich, da die Zeit seines Amts aus war, ging er heim in sein Haus.
And when the days of his service were complete, he returned home.
Und nach den Tagen ward sein Weib Elisabeth schwanger und verbarg sich fünf Monate und sprach:
After these days, his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. She declared,
Also hat mir der Herr getan in den Tagen, da er mich angesehen hat, dass er meine Schmach unter den Menschen von mir nähme.
“The Lord has done this for me. In these days He has shown me favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”
Und im sechsten Monat ward der Engel Gabriel gesandt von Gott in eine Stadt in Galiläa, die heißt Nazareth,
In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,
zu einer Jungfrau, die vertraut war einem Manne mit Namen Joseph, vom Hause David: und die Jungfrau hieß Maria.
to a virgin pledged in marriage to a man named Joseph, who was of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary.
Und der Engel kam zu ihr hinein und sprach: Gegrüßet seist du, Holdselige! Der Herr ist mit dir, du Gebenedeite unter den Weibern!
The angel appeared to her and said, “Greetings (note: Or Rejoice), you (note: BYZ and TR include Blessed are you among women!) who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
Da sie aber ihn sah, erschrak sie über seine Rede und gedachte: Welch ein Gruß ist das?
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.
Und der Engel sprach zu ihr: Fürchte dich nicht, Maria! du hast Gnade bei Gott gefunden.
So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
Siehe, du wirst schwanger werden und einen Sohn gebären, des Namen sollst du Jesus heißen.
Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus.
Der wird groß sein und ein Sohn des Höchsten genannt werden; und Gott der Herr wird ihm den Stuhl seines Vaters David geben;
He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David,
und er wird ein König sein über das Haus Jakob ewiglich, und seines Königreiches wird kein Ende sein.
and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end!”
Da sprach Maria zu dem Engel: Wie soll das zugehen, da ich von keinem Manne weiß?
“How can this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
Der Engel antwortete und sprach zu ihr: Der heilige Geist wird über dich kommen, und die Kraft des Höchsten wird dich überschatten; darum wird auch das Heilige, das von dir geboren wird, Gottes Sohn genannt werden.
The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born (note: TR born of you) will be called the Son of God.
Und siehe, Elisabeth, deine Gefreunde, ist auch schwanger mit einem Sohn in ihrem Alter und geht jetzt im sechsten Monat, von der man sagt, dass sie unfruchtbar sei.
Look, even Elizabeth your relative has conceived a son in her old age, and she who was called barren is in her sixth month.
Denn bei Gott ist kein Ding unmöglich.
For no word from God will ever fail (note: Or For nothing will be impossible with God.).”
Maria aber sprach: Siehe ich bin des Herrn Magd; mir geschehe, wie du gesagt hast. Und der Engel schied von ihr.
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it happen to me according to your word.” Then the angel left her.
Maria aber stand auf in den Tagen und ging auf das Gebirge eilends zu der Stadt Judas
In those days Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judah,
und kam in das Haus des Zacharias und grüßte Elisabeth.
where she entered the home of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
Und es begab sich, als Elisabeth den Gruß Marias hörte, hüpfte das Kind in ihrem Leibe. Und Elisabeth ward des heiligen Geistes voll
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
und rief laut und sprach: Gebenedeit bist du unter den Weibern, und gebenedeit ist die Frucht deines Leibes!
In a loud voice she exclaimed, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
Und woher kommt mir das, dass die Mutter meines Herrn zu mir kommt?
And why am I so honored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
Siehe, da ich die Stimme deines Grußes hörte, hüpfte mit Freuden das Kind in meinem Leibe.
For as soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.
Und o selig bist du, die du geglaubt hast! denn es wird vollendet werden, was dir gesagt ist von dem Herrn.
Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord’s word to her will be fulfilled.”
denn er hat die Niedrigkeit seiner Magd angesehen. Siehe, von nun an werden mich selig preisen alle Kindeskinder;
For He has looked with favor on the humble state of His servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed.
denn er hat große Dinge an mir getan, der da mächtig ist und des Name heilig ist.
For the Mighty One has done great things for me. Holy is His name.
Und seine Barmherzigkeit währet immer für und für bei denen, die ihn fürchten.
His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation.
Er übet Gewalt mit seinem Arm und zerstreut, die hoffärtig sind in ihres Herzens Sinn.
He has performed mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who are proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
Er stößt die Gewaltigen vom Stuhl und erhebt die Niedrigen.
He has brought down rulers from their thrones, but has exalted the humble.
Die Hungrigen füllt er mit Gütern und lässt die Reichen leer.
He has filled the hungry with good things, but has sent the rich away empty.
Er denkt der Barmherzigkeit und hilft seinem Diener Israel wieder auf,
He has helped His servant Israel, remembering to be merciful,
wie er geredet hat unsren Vätern, Abraham und seinem Samen ewiglich.
as He promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his descendants forever.”
Und Maria blieb bei ihr bei drei Monaten; darnach kehrte sie wiederum heim.
Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
Und Elisabeth kam ihre Zeit, dass sie gebären sollte; und sie gebar einen Sohn.
When the time came for Elizabeth to have her child, she gave birth to a son.
Und ihre Nachbarn und Gefreunde hörten, dass der Herr große Barmherzigkeit an ihr getan hatte, und freuten sich mit ihr.
Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they rejoiced with her.
Und es begab sich am achten Tage, da kamen sie, zu beschneiden das Kindlein, und hießen ihn nach seinem Vater Zacharias.
On the eighth day, when they came to circumcise the child, they were going to name him after his father Zechariah.
Aber seine Mutter antwortete und sprach: Mitnichten, sondern er soll Johannes heißen.
But his mother replied, “No! He shall be called John.”
Und sie sprachen zu ihr: Ist doch niemand in deiner Freundschaft, der also heiße.
They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who bears this name.”
Und sie winkten seinem Vater, wie er ihn wollte heißen lassen.
So they made signs to his father to find out what he wanted to name the child.
Und er forderte ein Täfelein und schrieb also: Er heißt Johannes. Und sie verwunderten sich alle.
Zechariah asked for a tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And they were all amazed.
Und alsbald ward sein Mund und seine Zunge aufgetan, und er redete und lobte Gott.
Immediately Zechariah’s mouth was opened and his tongue was released, and he began to speak, praising God.
Und es kam eine Furcht über alle Nachbarn; und die ganze Geschichte ward ruchbar auf dem ganzen jüdischen Gebirge.
All their neighbors were filled with awe, and people throughout the hill country of Judea were talking about these events.
Und alle, die es hörten, nahmen's zu Herzen und sprachen: Was, meinst du, will aus dem Kindlein werden? Denn die Hand des Herrn war mit ihm.
And all who heard this wondered in their hearts and asked, “What then will this child become?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.
Und sein Vater Zacharias ward des heiligen Geistes voll, weissagte und sprach:
Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:
Gelobet sei der Herr, der Gott Israels! denn er hat besucht und erlöst sein Volk
“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, because He has visited and redeemed His people.
und hat uns aufgerichtet ein Horn des Heils in dem Hause seines Dieners David,
He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David,
wie er vorzeiten geredet hat durch den Mund des Propheten:
as He spoke through His holy prophets, those of ages past,
dass er uns errettete von unsren Feinden und von der Hand aller, die uns hassen,
salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us,
und Barmherzigkeit erzeigte unsren Vätern und gedächte an seinen heiligen Bund
to show mercy to our fathers and to remember His holy covenant,
und an den Eid, den er geschworen hat unsrem Vater Abraham, uns zu geben,
the oath He swore to our father Abraham, to grant us
dass wir, erlöst aus der Hand unsrer Feinde, ihm dienten ohne Furcht unser Leben lang
deliverance from hostile hands, that we may serve Him without fear,
in Heiligkeit und Gerechtigkeit, die ihm gefällig ist.
in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our lives.
Und du, Kindlein, wirst ein Prophet des Höchsten heißen. Du wirst vor dem Herrn her gehen, dass du seinen Weg bereitest
And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for Him,
und Erkenntnis des Heils gebest seinem Volk, das da ist in Vergebung ihrer Sünden;
to give to His people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins,
durch die herzliche Barmherzigkeit unsres Gottes, durch welche uns besucht hat der Aufgang aus der Höhe,
because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the Dawn will visit us from on high,
auf dass er erscheine denen, die da sitzen in Finsternis und Schatten des Todes, und richte unsre Füße auf den Weg des Friedens.
to shine on those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.”
Und das Kindlein wuchs und ward stark im Geist; und er war in der Wüste, bis dass er sollte hervortreten vor das Volk Israel.
And the child grew and became strong in spirit (note: Or in the Spirit); and he lived in the wilderness until the time of his public appearance to Israel.
