Er aber sprach zu seinen Jüngern: Es war ein reicher Mann, der hatte einen Haushalter; der ward von ihm berüchtigt, als hätte er ihm seine Güter umgebracht.
Jesus also said to His disciples, “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions.
Und er forderte ihn und sprach zu ihm: Wie höre ich das von dir? Tu Rechnung von deinem Haushalten; denn du kannst hinfort nicht Haushalter sein!
So he called him in to ask, ‘What is this I hear about you? Turn in an account of your management, for you cannot be manager any longer.’
Der Haushalter sprach bei sich selbst: Was soll ich tun? Mein Herr nimmt das Amt von mir; graben kann ich nicht, so schäme ich mich zu betteln.
The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do, now that my master is taking away my position? I am too weak to dig and too ashamed to beg.
Ich weiß wohl, was ich tun will, wenn ich nun von dem Amt gesetzt werde, dass sie mich in ihre Häuser nehmen.
I know what I will do so that after my removal from management, people will welcome me into their homes.’
Und er rief zu sich alle Schuldner seines Herrn und sprach zu dem ersten: Wie viel bist du meinem Herrn schuldig?
And he called in each one of his master’s debtors. ‘How much do you owe my master?’ he asked the first.
Er sprach: Hundert Tonnen Öl. Und er sprach zu ihm: Nimm deinen Brief, setze dich und schreib flugs fünfzig.
‘A hundred measures of olive oil (note: Greek ‘A hundred baths of oil’; that is, approximately 870 gallons or 3,300 liters),’ he answered. ‘Take your bill,’ said the manager, ‘sit down quickly, and write fifty.’
Darnach sprach er zu dem andern: Du aber, wie viel bist du schuldig? Er sprach: Hundert Malter Weizen. Und er sprach zu ihm: Nimm deinen Brief und schreib achtzig.
Then he asked another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ ‘A hundred measures of wheat (note: Greek ‘A hundred cors of wheat’; that is, approximately 1,000 bushels or 35,000 liters (probably about 30 tons or 27 metric tons of wheat)),’ he replied. ‘Take your bill and write eighty,’ he told him.
Und der Herr lobte den ungerechten Haushalter, dass er klüglich gehandelt hatte; denn die Kinder dieser Welt sind klüger als die Kinder des Lichtes in ihrem Geschlecht.
The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the sons of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the sons of light.
Und ich sage euch auch: Machet euch Freunde mit dem ungerechten Mammon, auf dass, wenn ihr nun darbet, sie euch aufnehmen in die ewigen Hütten.
I tell you, use worldly wealth to make friends for yourselves so that when it is gone, they will welcome you into eternal dwellings.
Wer im geringsten treu ist, der ist auch im Großen treu; und wer im Geringsten unrecht ist, der ist auch im Großen unrecht.
Whoever is faithful with very little will also be faithful with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.
So ihr nun in dem ungerechten Mammon nicht treu seid, wer will euch das Wahrhaftige vertrauen?
So if you have not been faithful with worldly wealth, who will entrust you with true riches?
Und so ihr in dem Fremden nicht treu seid, wer wird euch geben, was euer ist?
And if you have not been faithful with the belongings of another, who will give you belongings of your own?
Kein Knecht kann zwei Herren dienen: entweder er wird den einen hassen und den andern lieben, oder er wird dem einen anhangen und den andern verachten. Ihr könnt nicht Gott samt dem Mammon dienen.
No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
Das alles hörten die Pharisäer auch, und waren geizig, und spotteten sein.
The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all of this and were scoffing at Jesus.
Und er sprach zu ihnen: Ihr seid's, die ihr euch selbst rechtfertigt vor den Menschen; aber Gott kennt eure Herzen; denn was hoch ist unter den Menschen, das ist ein Greuel vor Gott.
So He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is prized among men is detestable before God.
Das Gesetz und die Propheten weissagen bis auf Johannes; und von der Zeit wird das Reich Gottes durchs Evangelium gepredigt, und jedermann dringt mit Gewalt hinein.
The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the gospel of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it (note: Or everyone is urged to enter into it).
Es ist aber leichter, dass Himmel und Erde vergehen, denn dass ein Tüttel am Gesetz falle.
But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for a single stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.
Wer sich scheidet von seinem Weibe und freit eine andere, der bricht die Ehe; und wer die von dem Manne Geschiedene freit, der bricht auch die Ehe.
Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and he who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Es war aber ein reicher Mann, der kleidete sich mit Purpur und köstlicher Leinwand und lebte alle Tage herrlich und in Freuden.
Now there was a rich man dressed in purple and fine linen, who lived each day in joyous splendor.
Es war aber ein armer Mann mit Namen Lazarus, der lag vor seiner Tür voller Schwären
And a beggar named Lazarus lay at his gate, covered with sores
und begehrte sich zu sättigen von den Brosamen, die von des Reichen Tische fielen; doch kamen die Hunde und leckten ihm seine Schwären.
and longing to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
Es begab sich aber, dass der Arme starb und ward getragen von den Engeln in Abrahams Schoß. Der Reiche aber starb auch und ward begraben.
One day the beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side (note: Greek into Abraham’s bosom; similarly in verse 23). And the rich man also died and was buried.
Als er nun in der Hölle und in der Qual war, hob er seine Augen auf und sah Abraham von ferne und Lazarus in seinem Schoß.
In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham from afar, with Lazarus by his side.
Und er rief und sprach: Vater Abraham, erbarme dich mein und sende Lazarus, dass er die Spitze seines Fingers ins Wasser tauche und kühle meine Zunge; denn ich leide Pein in dieser Flamme.
So he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. For I am in agony in this fire.’
Abraham aber sprach: Gedenke, Sohn, dass du dein Gutes empfangen hast in deinem Leben, und Lazarus dagegen hat Böses empfangen; nun aber wird er getröstet, und du wirst gepeinigt.
But Abraham answered, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things. But now he is comforted here, while you are in agony.
Und über das alles ist zwischen uns und euch eine große Kluft befestigt, dass die wollten von hinnen hinabfahren zu euch, könnten nicht, und auch nicht von dannen zu uns herüberfahren.
And besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that even those who wish cannot cross from here to you, nor can anyone cross from there to us.’
Da sprach er: So bitte ich dich, Vater, dass du ihn sendest in meines Vaters Haus;
‘Then I beg you, father,’ he said, ‘send Lazarus to my father’s house,
denn ich habe noch fünf Brüder, dass er ihnen bezeuge, auf dass sie nicht auch kommen an diesen Ort der Qual.
for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also end up in this place of torment.’
Abraham sprach zu ihm: Sie haben Mose und die Propheten; lass sie dieselben hören.
But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let your brothers listen to them.’
Er aber sprach: Nein, Vater Abraham! sondern wenn einer von den Toten zu ihnen ginge, so würden sie Buße tun.
‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone is sent to them from the dead, they will repent.’
Er sprach zu ihm: Hören sie Mose und die Propheten nicht, so werden sie auch nicht glauben, wenn jemand von den Toten aufstünde.
Then Abraham said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”
