Es war aber ein Mensch unter den Pharisäern mit Namen Nikodemus, ein Oberster unter den Juden.
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews.
Der kam zu Jesu bei der Nacht und sprach zu ihm: Meister, wir wissen, dass du bist ein Lehrer von Gott gekommen; denn niemand kann die Zeichen tun, die du tust, es sei denn Gott mit ihm.
He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs You are doing if God were not with him.”
Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage dir: Es sei denn, dass jemand von neuem geboren werde, so kann er das Reich Gottes nicht sehen.
Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again (note: Or born from above; also in verse 7.).”
Nikodemus spricht zu ihm: Wie kann ein Mensch geboren werden wenn er alt ist? Kann er auch wiederum in seiner Mutter Leib gehen und geboren werden?
“How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time to be born?”
Jesus antwortete: Wahrlich, wahrlich ich sage dir: Es sei denn dass jemand geboren werde aus Wasser und Geist, so kann er nicht in das Reich Gottes kommen.
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.
Was vom Fleisch geboren wird, das ist Fleisch; und was vom Geist geboren wird, das ist Geist.
Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of the Spirit.
Lass dich's nicht wundern, dass ich dir gesagt habe: Ihr müsset von neuem geboren werden.
Do not be amazed that I said, ‘You (note: The Greek word for you is plural; also in verse 12.) must be born again.’
Der Wind bläst, wo er will, und du hörst sein Sausen wohl; aber du weißt nicht, woher er kommt und wohin er fährt. Also ist ein jeglicher, der aus dem Geist geboren ist.
The wind blows where it wishes. You hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
Nikodemus antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Wie mag solches zugehen?
“How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.
Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Bist du ein Meister in Israel und weißt das nicht?
“You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and you do not understand these things?
Wahrlich, wahrlich ich sage dir: Wir reden, was wir wissen, und zeugen, was wir gesehen haben; und ihr nehmt unser Zeugnis nicht an.
Truly, truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, and yet you people do not accept our testimony.
Glaubet ihr nicht, wenn ich euch von irdischen Dingen sage, wie würdet ihr glauben, wenn ich euch von himmlischen Dingen sagen würde?
If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?
Und niemand fährt gen Himmel, denn der vom Himmel herniedergekommen ist, nämlich des Menschen Sohn, der im Himmel ist.
No one has ascended into heaven except the One who descended from heaven—the Son of Man (note: BYZ and TR include who is in heaven.).
Und wie Mose in der Wüste eine Schlange erhöht hat, also muss des Menschen Sohn erhöht werden,
Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,
auf das alle, die an ihn glauben, nicht verloren werden, sondern das ewige Leben haben.
that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life (note: Or everyone who believes may have eternal life in Him.).
Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt, dass er seinen eingeborenen Sohn gab, auf dass alle, die an ihn glauben, nicht verloren werden, sondern das ewige Leben haben.
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only (note: Or only begotten or unique; also in verse 18) Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Denn Gott hat seinen Sohn nicht gesandt in die Welt, dass er die Welt richte, sondern dass die Welt durch ihn selig werde.
For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.
Wer an ihn glaubt, der wird nicht gerichtet; wer aber nicht glaubt, der ist schon gerichtet, denn er glaubt nicht an den Namen des eingeborenen Sohnes Gottes.
Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
Das ist aber das Gericht, dass das Licht in die Welt gekommen ist, und die Menschen liebten die Finsternis mehr als das Licht; denn ihre Werke waren böse.
And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world, but men loved the darkness rather than the Light because their deeds were evil.
Wer arges tut, der hasst das Licht und kommt nicht an das Licht, auf dass seine Werke nicht gestraft werden.
Everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come into the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
Wer aber die Wahrheit tut, der kommt an das Licht, dass seine Werke offenbar werden; denn sie sind in Gott getan.
But whoever practices the truth comes into the Light, so that it may be seen clearly that what he has done has been accomplished in God (note: Some translators close this quotation after verse 15.).”
Darnach kam Jesus und seine Jünger in das jüdische Land und hatte daselbst sein Wesen mit ihnen und taufte.
After this, Jesus and His disciples went into the Judean countryside, where He spent some time with them and baptized.
Johannes aber taufte auch noch zu Enon, nahe bei Salim, denn es war viel Wasser daselbst; und sie kamen dahin und ließen sich taufen.
Now John was also baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because the water was plentiful there, and people kept coming to be baptized.
Denn Johannes war noch nicht ins Gefängnis gelegt.
(For John had not yet been thrown into prison.)
Da erhob sich eine Frage unter den Jüngern des Johannes mit den Juden über die Reinigung.
Then a dispute arose between John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the issue of ceremonial washing.
Und sie kamen zu Johannes und sprachen zu ihm: Meister, der bei dir war jenseit des Jordans, von dem du zeugtest, siehe, der tauft, und jedermann kommt zu ihm.
So John’s disciples came to him and said, “Look, Rabbi, the One who was with you beyond the Jordan, the One you testified about—He is baptizing, and everyone is going to Him.”
Johannes antwortete und sprach: Ein Mensch kann nichts nehmen, es werde ihm denn gegeben vom Himmel.
John replied, “A man can receive only what is given him from heaven.
Ihr selbst seid meine Zeugen, dass ich gesagt habe, ich sei nicht Christus, sondern vor ihm her gesandt.
You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but am sent ahead of Him.’
Wer die Braut hat, der ist der Bräutigam; der Freund aber des Bräutigams steht und hört ihm zu und freut sich hoch über des Bräutigams Stimme. Diese meine Freude ist nun erfüllt.
The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom stands and listens for him, and is overjoyed to hear the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.
Der von obenher kommt, ist über alle. Wer von der Erde ist, der ist von der Erde und redet von der Erde. Der vom Himmel kommt, der ist über alle
The One who comes from above is above all (note: Tischendorf The One comes from heaven.). The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks as one from the earth. The One who comes from heaven is above all.
und zeugt, was er gesehen und gehört hat; und sein Zeugnis nimmt niemand an.
He testifies to what He has seen and heard, yet no one accepts His testimony.
Wer es aber annimmt, der besiegelt's, dass Gott wahrhaftig sei.
Whoever accepts His testimony has certified that God is truthful.
Denn welchen Gott gesandt hat, der redet Gottes Worte; denn Gott gibt den Geist nicht nach dem Maß.
For the One whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit.
Der Vater hat den Sohn lieb und hat ihm alles in seine Hand gegeben.
The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in His hands.
Wer an den Sohn glaubt, der hat das ewige Leben. Wer dem Sohn nicht glaubt, der wird das Leben nicht sehen, sondern der Zorn Gottes bleibt über ihm.
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. Whoever rejects the Son will not see life. Instead, the wrath of God remains on him (note: Some translators close this quotation after verse 30.).”
