9:1

Hiob antwortete und sprach:

Then Job answered:

9:2

Ja, ich weiß gar wohl, dass es also ist und dass ein Mensch nicht recht behalten mag gegen Gott.

“Yes, I know that it is so, but how can a mortal be righteous before God?

9:3

Hat er Lust, mit ihm zu hadern, so kann er ihm auf tausend nicht eins antworten.

If one wished to contend with God, he could not answer Him one time out of a thousand.

9:4

Er ist weise und mächtig; wem ist's je gelungen, der sich wider ihn gelegt hat?

God is wise in heart and mighty in strength. Who has resisted Him and prospered?

9:5

Er versetzt Berge, ehe sie es innewerden, die er in seinem Zorn umkehrt.

He moves mountains without their knowledge and overturns them in His anger.

9:6

Er bewegt die Erde aus ihrem Ort, dass ihre Pfeiler zittern.

He shakes the earth from its place, so that its foundations tremble.

9:7

Er spricht zur Sonne, so geht sie nicht auf, und versiegelt die Sterne.

He commands the sun not ; He seals off the stars.

9:8

Er breitet den Himmel aus allein und geht auf den Wogen des Meeres.

He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea.

9:9

Er macht den Wagen am Himmel und Orion und die Plejaden und die Sterne gegen Mittag.

He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion, of the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.

9:10

Er tut große Dinge, die nicht zu erforschen sind, und Wunder, deren keine Zahl ist.

He does great things beyond searching out, and wonders without number.

9:11

Siehe, er geht an mir vorüber, ehe ich's gewahr werde, und wandelt vorbei, ehe ich's merke.

Were He to pass by me, I would not see Him; were He to move, I would not recognize Him.

9:12

Siehe, wenn er hinreißt, wer will ihm wehren? Wer will zu ihm sagen: Was machst du?

If , who can stop Him? Who dares to ask Him, ‘What are You doing?’

9:13

Er ist Gott; seinen Zorn kann niemand stillen; unter ihn mussten sich beugen die Helfer Rahabs.

God does not restrain His anger; the helpers of Rahab cower beneath Him.

9:14

Wie sollte ich denn ihm antworten und Worte finden gegen ihn?

How then can I answer Him or choose my arguments against Him?

9:15

Wenn ich auch recht habe, kann ich ihm dennoch nicht antworten, sondern ich müsste um mein Recht flehen.

For even if I were right, I could not answer. I could only beg my Judge for mercy.

9:16

Wenn ich ihn schon anrufe, und er mir antwortet, so glaube ich doch nicht, dass er meine Stimme höre.

If I summoned Him and He answered me, I do not believe He would listen to my voice.

9:17

Denn er fährt über mich mit Ungestüm und macht mir Wunden viel ohne Ursache.

For He would crush me with a tempest and multiply my wounds without cause.

9:18

Er lässt meinen Geist sich nicht erquicken, sondern macht mich voll Betrübnis.

He does not let me catch my breath, but overwhelms me with bitterness.

9:19

Will man Macht, so ist er zu mächtig; will man Recht, wer will mein Zeuge sein?

If it is a matter of strength, He is indeed mighty! If it is a matter of justice, who ?

9:20

Sage ich, dass ich gerecht bin, so verdammt er mich doch; bin ich Unschuldig, so macht er mich doch zu Unrecht.

Even if I were righteous, my mouth would condemn me; if I were blameless, .

9:21

Ich bin unschuldig! ich frage nicht nach meiner Seele, begehre keines Lebens mehr.

Though I am blameless, I have no concern for myself; I despise my own life.

9:22

Es ist eins, darum sage ich: Er bringt um beide, den Frommen und den Gottlosen.

It is all the same, and so I say, ‘He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’

9:23

Wenn er anhebt zu geißeln, so dringt er alsbald zum Tod und spottet der Anfechtung der Unschuldigen.

When the scourge brings sudden death, He mocks the despair of the innocent.

9:24

Das Land aber wird gegeben unter die Hand der Gottlosen, und der Richter Antlitz verhüllt er. Ist's nicht also, wer anders sollte es tun?

The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; He blindfolds its judges. If it is not He, then who is it?

9:25

Meine Tage sind schneller gewesen denn ein Läufer; sie sind geflohen und haben nichts Gutes erlebt.

My days are swifter than a runner; they flee without seeing good.

9:26

Sie sind dahingefahren wie die Rohrschiffe, wie ein Adler fliegt zur Speise.

They sweep by like boats of papyrus, like an eagle swooping down on its prey.

9:27

Wenn ich gedenke: Ich will meiner Klage vergessen und meine Gebärde lassen fahren und mich erquicken,

If I were to say, ‘I will forget my complaint and change my expression and smile,’

9:28

so fürchte ich alle meine Schmerzen, weil ich weiß, dass du mich nicht unschuldig sein lässest.

I would still dread all my sufferings; I know that You will not acquit me.

9:29

Ich muss ja doch ein Gottloser sein; warum mühe ich mich denn so vergeblich?

Since I am already found guilty, why should I labor in vain?

9:30

Wenn ich mich gleich mit Schneewasser wüsche und reinigte mein Hände mit Lauge,

If I should wash myself and cleanse my hands with lye,

9:31

so wirst du mich doch tauchen in Kot, und so werden mir meine Kleider greulich anstehen.

then You would plunge me into the pit, and even my own clothes would despise me.

9:32

Denn er ist nicht meinesgleichen, dem ich antworten könnte, dass wir vor Gericht miteinander kämen.

For He is not a man like me, that I can answer Him, that we can take each other to court.

9:33

Es ist zwischen uns kein Schiedsmann, der seine Hand auf uns beide lege.

Nor is there a mediator between us, to lay his hand upon us both.

9:34

Er nehme von mir seine Rute und lasse seinen Schrecken von mir,

Let Him remove His rod from me, so that His terror will no longer frighten me.

9:35

dass ich möge reden und mich nicht vor ihm fürchten dürfe; denn ich weiß, dass ich kein solcher bin.

Then I would speak without fear of Him. But as it is, I am on my own.
