4:1
Unde bella et lites in vobis ? nonne hinc : ex concupiscentiis vestris, quæ militant in membris vestris ?
What causes conflicts and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from the passions at war within you?
4:2
concupiscitis, et non habetis : occiditis, et zelatis : et non potestis adipisci : litigatis, et belligeratis, et non habetis, propter quod non postulatis.
You crave what you do not have; you kill and covet, but are unable to obtain it. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask.
4:3
Petitis, et non accipitis : eo quod male petatis : ut in concupiscentiis vestris insumatis.
And when you do ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may squander it on your pleasures.
4:4
Adulteri, nescitis quia amicitia hujus mundi inimica est Dei ? quicumque ergo voluerit amicus esse sæculi hujus, inimicus Dei constituitur.
You adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore, whoever chooses to be a friend of the world renders himself (note: Or is appointed) an enemy of God.
4:5
An putatis quia inaniter Scriptura dicat : Ad invidiam concupiscit spiritus qui habitat in vobis ?
Or do you think the Scripture says without reason that the Spirit (note: Or the spirit) He caused to dwell in us yearns with envy?
4:6
majorem autem dat gratiam. Propter quod dicit : Deus superbis resistit, humilibus autem dat gratiam.
But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
4:7
Subditi ergo estote Deo, resistite autem diabolo, et fugiet a vobis.
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
4:8
Appropinquate Deo, et appropinquabit vobis. Emundate manus, peccatores : et purificate corda, duplices animo.
Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
4:9
Miseri estote, et lugete, et plorate : risus vester in luctum convertatur, et gaudium in mœrorem.
Grieve, mourn, and weep. Turn your laughter to mourning, and your joy to gloom.
Humiliamini in conspectu Domini, et exaltabit vos.
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.
Nolite detrahere alterutrum fratres. Qui detrahit fratri, aut qui judicat fratrem suum, detrahit legi, et judicat legem. Si autem judicas legem, non es factor legis, sed judex.
Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. And if you judge the law, you are not a practitioner of the law, but a judge of it.
Unus est legislator et judex, qui potest perdere et liberare.
There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?
Tu autem quis es, qui judicas proximum ? Ecce nunc qui dicitis : Hodie, aut crastino ibimus in illam civitatem, et faciemus ibi quidem annum, et mercabimur, et lucrum faciemus :
Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business, and make a profit.”
qui ignoratis quid erit in crastino.
You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
Quæ est enim vita vestra ? vapor est ad modicum parens, et deinceps exterminabitur ; pro eo ut dicatis : Si Dominus voluerit. Et : Si vixerimus, faciemus hoc, aut illud.
Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord is willing, we will live and do this or that.”
Nunc autem exsultatis in superbiis vestris. Omnis exsultatio talis, maligna est.
As it is, you boast in your proud intentions. All such boasting is evil.
Scienti igitur bonum facere, et non facienti, peccatum est illi.
Anyone, then, who knows the right thing to do, yet fails to do it, is guilty of sin.
