Ensuite, quatorze ans plus tard, je montai à nouveau à Jérusalem avec Barnabé ayant aussi pris Tite avec moi.
Fourteen years later I went up again to Jerusalem, accompanied by Barnabas. I took Titus along also.
Ce fut d'après une révélation que j'y montai, et je leur exposai l'Evangile que je prêche parmi les Gentils ; je l'exposai en particulier à ceux qui étaient les plus considérés, de peur de courir ou d'avoir couru en vain.
I went in response to a revelation and set before them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. But I spoke privately to those recognized as leaders, for fear that I was running or had already run in vain.
Or on n'obligea même pas Tite qui m'accompagnait, et qui était Grec, à se faire circoncire.
Yet not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though he was a Greek.
Et cela, à cause des faux frères intrus, qui s'étaient glissés parmi nous pour épier la liberté que nous avons dans le Christ Jésus, afin de nous réduire en servitude.
This issue arose because some false brothers had come in under false pretenses to spy on our freedom in Christ Jesus, in order to enslave us.
Nous n'avons pas consenti, même pour un instant, à nous soumettre à eux, afin que la vérité de l'Evangile fût maintenue parmi vous.
We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you.
Quant à ceux qu'on tient en si haute estime, — ce qu'ils ont été autrefois ne m'importe pas : Dieu ne fait point acception des personnes, — ces hommes si considérés ne m'imposèrent rien de plus.
But as for the highly esteemed—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism—those leaders added nothing to me.
Au contraire, voyant que l'Evangile m'avait été confié pour les incirconcis, comme à Pierre pour les circoncis,
On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted to preach the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been to the circumcised.
— car celui qui a fait de Pierre l'apôtre des circoncis a aussi fait de moi l'apôtre des Gentils, —
For the One who was at work in Peter’s apostleship to the circumcised was also at work in my apostleship to the Gentiles.
et ayant reconnu la grâce qui m'avait été accordée, Jacques, Céphas et Jean, qui sont regardés comme des colonnes, nous donnèrent la main, à Barnabé et à moi, en signe de communion, pour aller, nous aux païens, eux aux circoncis.
And recognizing the grace that I had been given, James, Cephas (note: That is, Peter; also in verses 11 and 14), and John—those reputed to be pillars—gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, so that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised.
Seulement nous devions nous souvenir des pauvres, ce que j'ai eu bien soin de faire.
They only asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.
Mais lorsque Céphas vint à Antioche, je lui résistai en face, parce qu'il était digne de blâme.
When Cephas came to Antioch, however, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.
En effet, avant l'arrivée de certaines gens de l'entourage de Jacques, il mangeait avec les païens ; mais après leur arrivée, il s'esquiva, et se tint à l'écart, par crainte des partisans de la circoncision.
For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself, for fear of those in the circumcision group.
Avec lui, les autres Juifs usèrent aussi de dissimulation, en sorte que Barnabé lui-même s'y laissa entraîner.
The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.
Pour moi, voyant qu'ils ne marchaient pas droit selon la vérité de l'Evangile, je dis à Céphas en présence de tous : " Si toi qui es Juif, tu vis à la manière des Gentils et non à la manière des Juifs, comment peux-tu forcer les Gentils à judaïser ? "
When I saw that they were not walking in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all, “If you, who are a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews (note: Some translators close this quotation after verse 16 or 21.)?”
Pour nous, nous sommes Juifs de naissance, et non pécheurs d'entre les Gentils.
We who are Jews by birth and not Gentile “sinners”
Cependant sachant que l'homme est justifié, non par les œuvres de la Loi, mais par la foi dans le Christ Jésus, nous aussi nous avons cru au Christ Jésus, afin d'être justifiés par la foi en lui et non par les œuvres de la Loi ; car nul homme ne sera justifié par les œuvres de la Loi.
know that a man is not justified by works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.
Or si, tandis que nous cherchons à être justifiés par le Christ, nous étions nous-mêmes trouvés pécheurs..., le Christ serait-il donc un ministre du péché ? Loin de là !
But if, while we seek to be justified in Christ, we ourselves are found to be sinners, does that make Christ a minister of sin? Certainly not!
Car si ce que j'ai détruit, je le rebâtis, je me constitue moi-même prévaricateur,
If I rebuild what I have already torn down, I prove myself to be a lawbreaker.
puisque c'est par la Loi que je suis mort à la Loi, afin de vivre pour Dieu. J'ai été crucifié avec le Christ,
For through the law I died to the law so that I might live to God.
et si je vis, ce n'est plus moi qui vis, c'est le Christ qui vit en moi. Ce que je vis maintenant dans la chair, je le vis dans la foi au Fils de Dieu, qui m'a aimé et qui s'est livré lui-même pour moi.
I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
Je ne rejette pas la grâce de Dieu ; car si la justice s'obtient par la Loi, le Christ est donc mort pour rien.
I do not set aside the grace of God. For if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.
