Καὶ ἀπῆρεν πᾶσα συναγωγὴ υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ἐκ τῆς ἐρήμου Σεῖν κατὰ παρεμβολὰς αὐτῶν διὰ ῥήματος Τυρίου, καὶ παρενεβάλοσαν ἐν 'ΡαΦιδείν· οὐκ ἦν δὲ ὕδωρ τῷ λαῷ πιεῖν.
Then the whole congregation of Israel left the Desert of Sin (note: The geographical name Sin is related to Sinai and should not be mistaken for the English word sin.), moving from place to place as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.
καὶ ἐλοιδορεῖτο ὁ λαὸς πρὸς φυσῆν λέγοντες Δὸς ἡμῖν ὕδωρ ἵνα πίωμεν. καὶ εἶπεν αὖ Μωυσῆς ΤΙ λοιδορεῖσθέ μοι, καὶ τί πειράζετε κύριον ;
So the people contended with Moses, “Give us water to drink.” “Why do you contend with me?” Moses replied. “Why do you test the LORD?”
ἐδίψησεν δὲ ἐκεῖ ὁ λαὸς ὕδατι· καὶ ἐγόγγυζεν ἐκεῖ ὁ λαὸς πρὸς Μωυσῆν Ινα τί τοῦτο ἀνεβίβασας ἡμᾶς ἐξ Αἰγύπτου, όποκτσιναι ἡμᾶς καὶ τὰ ἡμῶν καὶ τὰ κτήνη τῷ δίψει;
But the people thirsted for water there, and they grumbled against Moses: “Why have you brought us out of Egypt—to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?”
ἐβόησεν δὲ Μωυσῆς πρὸς λέγων Τί ποιήσω τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ; ἔτι μικρὸν καὶ καταλιθοβολήσουσίν σουσίν με.
Then Moses cried out to the LORD, “What should I do with these people? A little more and they will stone me!”
καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν Ηροπορεύου τοῦ λαοῦ τούτου, λάβε δὲ σεαυτῷ ἀπὸ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων τοῦ λαοῦ· καὶ τὴν ῥάβδον, ἐν ᾗ ἐπάταξας τὸν ποταμόν, λάβε ἐν τῇ χειρί σου καὶ πορεύση.
And the LORD said to Moses, “Walk on ahead of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take along in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.
ὅδε ἐγὼ ἕστηκα ἐκεῖ πρὸ τοῦ σὲ ἐπὶ τῆς πέτρας ἐν Χωρήβ. καὶ πατάξεις τὴν πέτραν, καὶ ἐξελεύσεται ἐξ αὐτῆς ὕδωρ, καὶ πίεται ὁ λαός μου. ἐποίησεν δὲ Μωυσῆς οὕτως ἐναντίον τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ.
Behold, I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb (note: Horeb is another name for Sinai.). And when you strike the rock, water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.
καὶ ἐπωνόμασεν τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου Πειρασμός, καὶ Λοιδόρησις, διὰ τὴν λοιδορίαν τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ καὶ διὰ τὸ πειράζειν κύριον λέγοντας Εἰ ἔστιν ἔστιν ἐν ἡμῖν ἢ οὔ ;
He named the place Massah (note: Massah means testing.) and Meribah (note: Meribah means quarreling.) because the Israelites quarreled, and because they tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?”
Ἦλθεν δὲ Ἀμαλὴκ καὶ ἐπολέμει Ἰσραὴλ ἐν Ῥαφιδεὶν.
After this, the Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.
εἶπεν δὲ Μωυσῆς τῷ Ἰησοῦ Ἐπίλεξον σεαυτῷ ἄνδρας δυνατούς, καὶ ἐξελθὼν παράταξαι τῷ Ἀμαλὴκ αὔριον· καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἕστηκα ἐπὶ τῆς κορυφῆς τοῦ βουνοῦ, καὶ ἡ ῥάβδος τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν τῇ χειρί μου.
So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on the hilltop with the staff of God in my hand.”
καἰ ἐποίησεν Ιησοῦς καθάπερ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Μωυσῆς, καὶ ἐξελθὼν παρετάξατο τῶ Αμαλήκ· καὶ Μωυσῆς καὶ Ἀαρὼν καἳ̀νρ ἀνέβησαν ἐπὶ τὴν κορυφὴν τοῦ βουνοῦ.
Joshua did as Moses had instructed him and fought against the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
καὶ ἐγίνετο ὅταν ἐπῆρεν Μωυσῆς τὰς χεῖρας, κατίσχυεν ὅταν δὲ καθῆκεν τὰς χεῖρας, κατίσχυεν Ἀμαλήκ.
As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed; but when he lowered them, Amalek prevailed.
αἱ δὲ Μωυσῆ βαρεῖαι· καὶ λαβόντες λίθον ὑπέθηκαν ἐπ’ αὐτόν, καὶ ἐκάθητο ἐπ’ αὐτοῦ· καὶ Ἀαρὼν καὶ Ὥρ ἐστήριζον τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῦ, ἐντεῦθεν εἷς καὶ ἐντεῦθεν εἷς· καὶ ἐγένοντο αἱ χεφες Μωυσῆ ἑ γμέναι ἕως δυσμῶν ἡλίου. καὶ ἐτρέψατο Ἰησοῦς τὸν Ἀμαλὴκ καὶ πάντα τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ ἐν φόνῳ μαχαίρας. Εἶπεν δὲ Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν κατάγραψον τοῦτο εἰς μνημόσυνον εἰς βιβλίον, καὶ δὸς εἰς τὰ ὦτα Ἰησοῖ, ὅτι ἀλοιφῇ ἐξαλείψω τὸ μνημόσυνον Ἀμαλὴκ ἐκ τῆς ὑπὸ τὸν οὐρανόν. καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν Μωσῆς θυσιαστήριον Κύρῳ, καὶ ἐπωνόμασεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ κύριος καταφυγή μου· ἕτι ἐν χειρὶ κρυφαίᾳ πολεμεῖ κύριος ἐπὶ Ἀμαλὴκ ἀπὸ γενεῶν εἰς γενεάς.
When Moses’ hands grew heavy, they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Then Aaron and Hur held his hands up, one on each side, so that his hands remained steady until the sun went down.
