So seid nun Gottes Nachfolger als die lieben Kinder
Be imitators of God, therefore, as beloved children,
und wandelt in der Liebe, gleichwie Christus uns hat geliebt und sich selbst dargegeben für uns als Gabe und Opfer, Gott zu einem süßen Geruch.
and walk in love, jus (note: NE and WH Christ loved you)t as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant sacrificial offering to God.
Hurerei aber und alle Unreinigkeit oder Geiz lasset nicht von euch gesagt werden, wie den Heiligen zusteht,
But among you, as is proper among the saints, there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed.
auch nicht schandbare Worte und Narrenteidinge oder Scherze, welche euch nicht ziemen, sondern vielmehr Danksagung.
Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk, or crude joking, which are out of character, but rather thanksgiving.
Denn das sollt ihr wissen, dass kein Hurer oder Unreiner oder Geiziger, welcher ist ein Götzendiener, Erbe hat in dem Reich Christi und Gottes.
For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure, or greedy person (that is, an idolater) has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Lasset euch niemand verführen mit vergeblichen Worten; denn um dieser Dinge willen kommt der Zorn Gottes über die Kinder des Unglaubens.
Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience.
Denn ihr waret weiland Finsternis; nun aber seid ihr ein Licht in dem Herrn.
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light,
Wandelt wie die Kinder des Lichts, die Frucht des Geistes ist allerlei Gütigkeit und Gerechtigkeit und Wahrheit,
for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.
und habt nicht Gemeinschaft mit den unfruchtbaren Werken der Finsternis, strafet sie aber vielmehr.
Have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.
Denn was heimlich von ihnen geschieht, das ist auch zu sagen schändlich.
For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.
Das alles aber wird offenbar, wenn's vom Licht gestraft wird; denn alles, was offenbar ist, das ist Licht.
But everything exposed by the light becomes visible (note: SBL begins verse 14 after visible,), for everything that is illuminated becomes a light itself.
Darum heißt es: „Wache auf, der du schläfst, und stehe auf von den Toten, so wird dich Christus erleuchten.”
So it is said: “Wake up, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
So sehet nun zu, wie ihr vorsichtig wandelt, nicht als die Unweisen, sondern als die Weisen,
Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,
Darum werdet nicht unverständig, sondern verständig, was da sei des Herrn Wille.
Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
Und saufet euch nicht voll Wein, daraus ein unordentlich Wesen folgt, sondern werdet voll Geistes:
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to reckless indiscretion. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.
redet untereinander in Psalmen und Lobgesängen und geistlichen Liedern, singet und spielet dem Herrn in eurem Herzen
Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord,
und saget Dank allezeit für alles Gott und dem Vater in dem Namen unsres Herrn Jesu Christi,
always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
und seid untereinander untertan in der Furcht Gottes.
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ (note: Or in the fear of Christ.).
Die Weiber seien untertan ihren Männern als dem Herrn.
Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.
Denn der Mann ist des Weibes Haupt, gleichwie auch Christus das Haupt ist der Gemeinde, und er ist seines Leibes Heiland.
For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, His body, of which He is the Savior.
Aber wie nun die Gemeinde ist Christo untertan, also auch die Weiber ihren Männern in allen Dingen.
Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
Ihr Männer, liebet eure Weiber, gleichwie Christus auch geliebt hat die Gemeinde und hat sich selbst für sie gegeben,
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her
auf dass er sie heiligte, und hat sie gereinigt durch das Wasserbad im Wort,
to sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,
auf dass er sie sich selbst darstellte als eine Gemeinde, die herrlich sei, die nicht habe einen Flecken oder Runzel oder des etwas, sondern dass sie heilig sei und unsträflich.
and to present her to Himself as a glorious church, without stain or wrinkle or any such blemish, but holy and blameless.
Also sollen auch die Männer ihre Weiber lieben wie ihre eigenen Leiber. Wer sein Weib liebt, der liebt sich selbst.
In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
Denn niemand hat jemals sein eigen Fleisch gehasst; sondern er nährt es und pflegt sein, gleichwie auch der Herr die Gemeinde.
Indeed, no one ever hated his own body, but he nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church.
Denn wir sind die Glieder seines Leibes, von seinem Fleisch und von seinem Gebein.
For we are members of His body (note: BYZ and TR include —of His flesh and of His bones.).
„Um deswillen wird ein Mensch verlassen Vater und Mutter und seinem Weibe anhangen, und werden die zwei ein Fleisch sein.”
“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh (note: Genesis 2:24 (see also LXX)).”
Das Geheimnis ist groß; ich sage aber von Christo und der Gemeinde.
This mystery is profound, but I am speaking about Christ and the church.
Doch auch ihr, ja ein jeglicher habe lieb sein Weib als sich selbst; das Weib aber fürchte den Mann.
Nevertheless, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
