2:1

Und auch euch, da ihr tot waret durch Übertretungen und Sünden,

And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,

2:2

in welchen ihr weiland gewandelt habt nach dem Lauf dieser Welt und nach dem Fürsten, der in der Luft herrscht, nämlich nach dem Geist, der zu dieser Zeit sein Werk hat in den Kindern des Unglaubens,

in which you used to walk when you conformed to the ways of this world and of the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit who is now at work in the sons of disobedience.

2:3

unter welchen auch wir alle weiland unsren Wandel gehabt haben in den Lüsten unsres Fleisches und taten den Willen des Fleisches und der Vernunft und waren auch Kinder des Zorns von Natur, gleichwie auch die andern;

All of us also lived among them at one time, fulfilling the cravings of our flesh and indulging its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature children of wrath.

2:4

Aber Gott, der da reich ist an Barmherzigkeit, durch seine große Liebe, damit er uns geliebt hat,

But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,

2:5

da wir tot waren in den Sünden, hat er uns samt Christo lebendig gemacht (denn aus Gnade seid ihr selig geworden)

made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses. It is by grace you have been saved!

2:6

und hat uns samt ihm auferweckt und samt ihm in das himmlische Wesen gesetzt in Christo Jesu,

And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,

2:7

auf dass er erzeigte in den zukünftigen Zeiten den überschwenglichen Reichtum seiner Gnade durch seine Güte gegen uns in Christo Jesu.

in order that in the coming ages He might display the surpassing riches of His grace, demonstrated by His kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

2:8

Denn aus Gnade seid ihr selig geworden durch den Glauben, und das nicht aus euch: Gottes Gabe ist es,

For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God,

2:9

nicht aus den Werken, auf dass sich nicht jemand rühme.

not by works, so that no one can boast.

2:10

Denn wir sind sein Werk, geschaffen in Christo Jesu zu guten Werken, zu welchen Gott uns zuvor bereitet hat, dass wir darin wandeln sollen.

For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.

2:11

Darum gedenket daran, dass ihr, die ihr weiland nach dem Fleisch Heiden gewesen seid und die Unbeschnittenen genannt wurdet von denen, die genannt sind die Beschneidung nach dem Fleisch, die mit der Hand geschieht,

Therefore remember that formerly you who are Gentiles in the flesh and called uncircumcised by the so-called circumcision (that done in the body by human hands)—

2:12

dass ihr zur selben Zeit waret ohne Christum, fremd und außer der Bürgerschaft Israels und fremd den Testamenten der Verheißung; daher ihr keine Hoffnung hattet und waret ohne Gott in der Welt.

remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.

2:13

Nun aber seid ihr, die ihr in Christo Jesu seid und weiland ferne gewesen, nahe geworden durch das Blut Christi.

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.

2:14

Denn er ist unser Friede, der aus beiden eines hat gemacht und hat abgebrochen den Zaun, der dazwischen war, indem er durch sein Fleisch wegnahm die Feindschaft,

For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has torn down the dividing wall of hostility

2:15

nämlich das Gesetz, so in Geboten gestellt war, auf dass er aus zweien einen neuen Menschen in ihm selber schüfe und Frieden machte,

by abolishing in His flesh the law of commandments and decrees. He did this to create in Himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace

2:16

und dass er beide versöhnte mit Gott in einem Leibe durch das Kreuz und hat die Feindschaft getötet durch sich selbst.

and reconciling both of them to God in one body through the cross, by which He put to death their hostility.

2:17

Und er ist gekommen, hat verkündigt im Evangelium den Frieden euch, die ihr ferne waret, und denen, die nahe waren;

He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.

2:18

denn durch ihn haben wir den Zugang alle beide in einem Geiste zum Vater.

For through Him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

2:19

So seid ihr nun nicht mehr Gäste und Fremdlinge, sondern Bürger mit den Heiligen und Gottes Hausgenossen,

Therefore you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household,

2:20

erbaut auf den Grund der Apostel und Propheten, da Jesus Christus der Eckstein ist,

built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone.

2:21

auf welchem der ganze Bau ineinandergefügt wächst zu einem heiligen Tempel in dem Herrn,

In Him the whole building is fitted together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord.

2:22

auf welchem auch ihr mit erbaut werdet zu einer Behausung Gottes im Geist.

And in Him you too are being built together into a dwelling place for God in His Spirit.
