While Peter and John were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them,
mécontents de ce qu'ils enseignaient le peuple et annonçaient en la personne de Jésus la résurrection des morts.
greatly disturbed that they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.
Ils mirent la main sur eux, et ils les jetèrent en prison jusqu'au lendemain ; car il était déjà soir.
They seized Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in custody until the next day.
Cependant beaucoup de ceux qui avaient entendu ce discours crurent, et le nombre des hommes s'éleva à environ cinq mille.
But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand.
Le lendemain, leurs chefs, les Anciens et les Scribes, s'assemblèrent à Jérusalem,
The next day the rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem,

They had Peter and John brought in and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”
Alors Pierre, rempli du Saint-Esprit, leur dit : " Chefs du peuple et Anciens d'Israël :
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people!
si l'on nous interroge aujourd'hui, sur un bienfait accordé à un infirme, pour savoir comment cet homme a été guéri,
If we are being examined today about a kind service to a man who was lame, to determine how he was healed,
sachez-le bien, vous tous, et tout le peuple d'Israël : C'est par le nom de Jésus-Christ de Nazareth, que vous avez crucifié et que Dieu a ressuscité des morts, c'est par lui que cet homme se présente devant vous pleinement guéri.
then let this be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.
Ce Jésus est la pierre rejetée par vous de l'édifice, et qui est devenue la pierre angulaire.
This Jesus is ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’
Et le salut n'est en aucun autre ; car il n'y a pas sous le ciel un autre nom qui ait été donné aux hommes, par lequel nous devions être sauvés. "
Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”
Lorsqu'ils virent l'assurance de Pierre et de Jean, sachant que c'étaient des hommes du peuple sans instruction, ils furent étonnés ; ils les reconnurent en même temps pour avoir été avec Jésus.
When they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they marveled and took note that these men had been with Jesus.
Mais, comme ils voyaient debout, près d'eux, l'homme qui avait été guéri, ils n'avaient rien à répliquer.
And seeing the man who had been healed standing there with them, they had nothing to say in response.

So they ordered them to leave the Sanhedrin (note: Or the Council) and then conferred together.

“What shall we do with these men?” they asked. “It is clear to everyone living in Jerusalem that a remarkable miracle has occurred through them, and we cannot deny it.

But to keep this message from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them not to speak to anyone in this name.”

Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
Pierre et Jean leur répondirent : " Jugez s'il est juste devant Dieu de vous obéir plutôt qu'à Dieu.
But Peter and John replied, “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to listen to you rather than God.

For we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
Alors ils leur firent des menaces et les relâchèrent, ne sachant comment les punir, à cause du peuple, parce que tous glorifiaient Dieu de tout ce qui venait d'arriver.
After further threats they let them go. They could not find a way to punish them, because all the people were glorifying God for what had happened.
Car l'homme qui avait été guéri d'une manière si merveilleuse était âgé de plus de quarante ans.
For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.
Mis en liberté, ils se rendirent auprès de leurs frères et leur racontèrent tout ce que les Princes des prêtres et les Anciens leur avaient dit.
On their release, Peter and John returned to their own people and reported everything that the chief priests and elders had said to them.

When the believers heard this, they lifted up their voices to God with one accord. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “You made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them.
C'est vous qui avez dit [par l'Esprit-Saint], par la bouche de [notre père] David, votre serviteur : " Pourquoi les nations ont-elles frémi, et les peuples ont-ils formé de vains complots ?
You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of Your servant (note: Or child; also in verses 27 and 30), our father David: ‘Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
Les rois de la terre se sont soulevés ; les princes se sont ligués contre le Seigneur et contre son Christ. " —
The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against His Anointed One (note: Or His Christ or His Messiah; Psalm 2:1–2).’
Voici qu'en vérité, dans cette ville, se sont ligués contre votre saint serviteur, Jésus, consacré par votre onction, Hérode et Ponce-Pilate avec les gentils et les peuples d'Israël,
In fact, this is the very city where Herod and Pontius Pilate conspired with the Gentiles and the people of Israel against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed.

They carried out what Your hand and will had decided beforehand would happen.
Et maintenant, Seigneur, considérez leurs menaces, et donnez à vos serviteurs d'annoncer votre parole avec une pleine assurance,
And now, Lord, consider their threats, and enable Your servants to speak Your word with complete boldness,
en étendant votre main pour qu'il se fasse des guérisons, des miracles et des prodiges, par le nom de votre saint serviteur Jésus. "
as You stretch out Your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.”
Quand ils eurent prié, le lieu où ils étaient réunis trembla : ils furent tous remplis du Saint-Esprit, et ils annoncèrent la parole de Dieu avec assurance.
After they had prayed, their meeting place was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
La multitude des fidèles n'avait qu'un cœur et qu'une âme ; nul n'appelait sien ce qu'il possédait, mais tout était commun entre eux.
The multitude of believers was one in heart and soul. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they owned.
Avec beaucoup de force les apôtres rendaient témoignage de la résurrection du Sauveur Jésus, et une grande grâce était sur eux tous.
With great power the apostles continued to give their testimony about the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And abundant grace was upon them all.
Car il n'y avait parmi eux aucun indigent : tous ceux qui possédaient des terres ou des maisons les vendaient
There were no needy ones among them, because those who owned lands or houses would sell their property, bring the proceeds from the sales,
et en apportaient le prix aux pieds des Apôtres ; on le distribuait ensuite à chacun, selon ses besoins.
and lay them at the apostles’ feet for distribution to anyone as he had need.
Un lévite originaire de Chypre, Joseph, surnommé par les apôtres Barnabé (ce qui se traduit Fils de consolation),
Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (meaning Son of Encouragement),

sold a field he owned, brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
