Mais un homme nommé Ananie, avec Saphire, sa femme, vendit une propriété,
Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property.
et ayant, de concert avec elle, retenu quelque chose du prix, il en apporta le reste et le mit aux pieds des Apôtres.
With his wife’s full knowledge, he kept back some of the proceeds for himself, but brought a portion and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
Pierre lui dit : " Ananie, pourquoi Satan a-t-il rempli ton cœur au point que tu mentes au Saint-Esprit et que tu retiennes quelque chose du prix de ce champ ?
Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and withhold some of the proceeds from the land?
Ne pouvais-tu pas sans le vendre, en rester possesseur ? et après l'avoir vendu, n'étais-tu pas maître de l'argent ? Comment as-tu pu concevoir un pareil dessein ? Ce n'est pas à des hommes que tu as menti, mais à Dieu. "
Did it not belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? How could you conceive such a deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God!”
En entendant ces paroles, Ananie tomba et expira, et tous ceux qui l'apprirent furent saisis d'une grande crainte.
On hearing these words, Ananias fell down and died. And great fear came over all who heard what had happened.
Les jeunes gens s'étant levés enveloppèrent le corps et l'emportèrent pour l'inhumer.
Then the young men stepped forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.
Environ trois heures après, la femme d'Ananie entra, sans savoir ce qui était arrivé.
About three hours later his wife also came in, unaware of what had happened.
Pierre lui demanda : " Dites-moi, est-ce tel prix que vous avez vendu votre champ ? " — " Oui, répondit-elle, c'est ce prix-là. "
“Tell me,” said Peter, “is this the price you and your husband got for the land?” “Yes,” she answered, “that is the price.”
Alors Pierre lui dit : " Comment vous êtes-vous accordés pour tenter l'Esprit du Seigneur ? Voici que le pied des jeunes gens qui ont enterré votre mari heurte le seuil ; ils vont aussi vous porter en terre. "
“How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord?” Peter replied. “Look, the feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”
Au même instant, elle tomba aux pieds de l'Apôtre, et expira. Les jeunes gens étant entrés la trouvèrent morte ; ils l'emportèrent et l'inhumèrent auprès de son mari.
At that instant she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
Une grande crainte se répandit dans toute l'Eglise et parmi tous ceux qui apprirent cet événement.
And great fear came over the whole church and all who heard about these events.
Beaucoup de miracles et de prodiges se faisaient parmi le peuple par les mains des Apôtres. Et ils se tenaient tous ensemble sous le portique de Salomon ;
The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people, and with one accord the believers gathered together in Solomon’s Colonnade.
aucune autre personne n'osait se joindre à eux, mais le peuple les louait hautement.
Although the people regarded them highly, no one else dared to join them.
Chaque jour voyait s'accroître la multitude d'hommes et de femmes qui croyaient au Seigneur,
Yet more and more believers were brought to the Lord—large numbers of both men and women.
en sorte qu'on apportait les malades dans les rues, et qu'on les plaçait sur des lits ou des nattes, afin que, lorsque Pierre passerait, son ombre au moins couvrît quelqu'un d'entre eux.
As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.
On venait ainsi en foule des villes voisines à Jérusalem, amenant des malades et des hommes tourmentés par des esprits impurs, et tous étaient guéris.
Crowds also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those tormented by unclean spirits, and all of them were healed.
Alors le grand prêtre et tous ses adhérents, savoir le parti des Sadducéens, se levèrent, remplis de jalousie ;
Then the high priest and all his associates, who belonged to the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. They went out
et ayant fait arrêter les Apôtres, ils les jetèrent dans une prison publique.
and arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.
Mais un ange du Seigneur, ayant ouvert pendant la nuit les portes de la prison, les fit sortir en disant :
But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out, saying,
" Allez, tenez-vous dans le temple, et annoncez au peuple toutes ces paroles de vie. "
“Go, stand in the temple courts and tell the people the full message of this new life.”
Ce qu'ayant entendu, ils entrèrent dès le matin dans le temple, et se mirent à enseigner. Cependant le grand prêtre et ses adhérents s'étant réunis, assemblèrent le conseil et tous les Anciens des enfants d'Israël, et ils envoyèrent à la prison chercher les Apôtres.
At daybreak the apostles entered the temple courts as they had been told and began to teach the people. When the high priest and his associates arrived, they convened the Sanhedrin (note: Or the Council; also in verses 27, 34, and 41)—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles.
Les satellites allèrent, et ne les ayant pas trouvés dans la prison, ils revinrent et firent leur rapport,
But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there. So they returned with the report:
en disant : " Nous avons trouvé la prison soigneusement fermée, et les gardes debout devant les portes ; mais après avoir ouvert, nous n'avons trouvé personne à l'intérieur. "
“We found the jail securely locked, with the guards posted at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.”
Quand le grand prêtre, le commandant du temple et les princes des prêtres eurent entendu ces paroles, ils furent dans une grande perplexité au sujet des prisonniers, ne sachant ce que ce pouvait être.
When the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard this account, they were perplexed as to what was happening (note: Literally as to what this might be).
En ce moment quelqu'un vint leur dire : " Ceux que vous aviez mis en prison, les voilà dans le temple et ils enseignent le peuple. "
Then someone came in and announced, “Look, the men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people!”
Le commandant se rendit aussitôt avec ses agents, et les amena sans leur faire violence, car ils craignaient d'être lapidés par le peuple.
At that point, the captain went with the officers and brought the apostles—but not by force, for fear the people would stone them.
Les ayant amenés, il les firent comparaître devant le Sanhédrin, et le grand prêtre les interrogea,
They brought them in and made them stand before the Sanhedrin, where the high priest interrogated them.
en disant : " Nous vous avons expressément défendu d'enseigner ce nom-là, et voilà que vous avez rempli Jérusalem de votre doctrine, et vous voulez faire retomber sur nous le sang de cet homme ! "
“We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us responsible for this man’s blood.”
Pierre et les Apôtres répondirent : " On doit obéir à Dieu plutôt qu'aux hommes.
But Peter and the other apostles replied, “We must obey God rather than men.
Le Dieu de nos pères a ressuscité Jésus, que vous avez fait mourir en le pendant au bois.
The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you had killed by hanging Him on a tree.
Dieu l'a élevé par sa droite comme Prince et Sauveur, pour donner à Israël le repentir et le pardon des péchés.
God exalted Him to His right hand as Prince and Savior, in order to grant repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.
Et nous sommes ses témoins pour ces choses, avec le Saint-Esprit que Dieu a donné à ceux qui lui sont dociles. "
We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.”
Exaspérés de ce qu'ils venaient d'entendre, les membres du conseil étaient d'avis de les faire mourir.
When the Council members heard this, they were enraged, and they resolved (note: ECM, BYZ, TR, and Tischendorf; or they took counsel; SBL, NE, and WH they wanted) to put the apostles to death.
Mais un Pharisien, nommé Gamaliel, docteur de la loi, vénéré de tout le peuple, se leva dans le sanhédrin, et, ayant ordonné de faire sortir un instant les Apôtres,
But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a short time.
il dit : " Enfants d'Israël, prenez garde à ce que vous allez faire à l'égard de ces hommes.
“Men of Israel,” he said, “consider carefully what you are about to do to these men.
Car il n'y a pas longtemps parut Théodas, qui se donnait pour un personnage ; environ quatre cents hommes s'attachèrent à lui : il fut tué, et tous ceux qui l'avaient suivi furent dispersés et réduits à néant.
Some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men joined him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing.
Après lui s'éleva Judas le Galiléen, à l'époque du recensement, et il attira du monde à son parti : il périt aussi, et tous ses partisans ont été dispersés.
After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and drew away people after him. He too perished, and all his followers were scattered.
Voici maintenant le conseil que je vous donne : Ne vous occupez plus de ces gens-là, et laissez-les aller. Si cette idée ou cette œuvre vient des hommes, elle se détruira d'elle-même ;
So in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone. Let them go! For if their purpose or endeavor is of human origin, it will fail.
mais si elle vient de Dieu, vous ne sauriez la détruire. Ne courez pas le risque d'avoir lutté contre Dieu même. "
But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop them. You may even find yourselves fighting against God.”
Ils se rendirent à son avis, et ayant rappelé les Apôtres, ils les firent battre de verges ; puis ils leur défendirent de parler au nom de Jésus, et les relâchèrent.
At this, they yielded to Gamaliel. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and released them.
Les Apôtres sortirent du sanhédrin, joyeux d'avoir été jugés dignes de souffrir des opprobres pour le nom de Jésus.
The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.
Et chaque jour, dans le temple et dans les maisons, ils ne cessaient d'annoncer Jésus comme le Christ.
Every day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.
