Once we were safely ashore, we learned that the island was called Malta.
ils nous recueillirent tous autour d'un grand feu qu'ils avaient allumé, à cause de la pluie qui était survenue, et du froid.
The islanders showed us extraordinary kindness. They kindled a fire and welcomed all of us because it was raining and cold.
Paul ayant ramassé quelques broussailles et les ayant jetées dans le brasier, une vipère, que la chaleur en fit sortir, s'attacha à sa main.
Paul gathered a bundle of sticks, and as he laid them on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself to his hand.
En voyant ce reptile qui pendait à sa main, les barbares se dirent les uns aux autres : " Sans aucun doute, cet homme est un meurtrier ; car, après qu'il a été sauvé de la mer, la Justice divine n'a pas voulu le laisser vivre. "
When the islanders saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “Surely this man is a murderer. Although he was saved from the sea, Justice (note: Greek Dike; that is, the Greek goddess of justice) has not allowed him to live.”
Lui, cependant, secoua la vipère dans le feu et n'en ressentit aucun mal.
But Paul shook the creature off into the fire and suffered no ill effects.
Les barbares s'attendaient à le voir enfler ou tomber mort subitement. Mais après avoir longtemps attendu, voyant qu'il ne lui arrivait aucun mal, ils changèrent de sentiment, et dirent : C'est un dieu.
The islanders were expecting him to swell up or suddenly drop dead. But after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.
Il y avait, dans le voisinage, des terres appartenant au premier personnage de l'île, nommé Publius ; qui nous reçut et nous donna pendant trois jours l'hospitalité la plus amicale.
Nearby stood an estate belonging to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us and entertained us hospitably for three days.
Le père de Publius était alors au lit, malade de la fièvre et de la dysenterie. Paul alla le visiter, et après avoir prié, il lui imposa les mains et le guérit.
The father of Publius was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him, and after praying and placing his hands on him, he healed the man.
Sur quoi tous les autres malades de l'île vinrent le trouver, et ils furent guéris.
After this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured as well.
On nous rendit de grands honneurs à notre départ, et on nous pourvut de ce dont nous avions besoin.
The islanders honored us in many ways and supplied our needs when we were ready to sail.
Après un séjour de trois mois, nous nous embarquâmes sur un vaisseau d'Alexandrie qui avait passé l'hiver dans l'île ; il portait pour enseigne les Dioscures.
After three months we set sail in an Alexandrian ship that had wintered in the island. It had the Twin Brothers (note: Greek Dioscuri; that is, the Greek gods Castor and Pollux) as a figurehead.
Ayant abordé à Syracuse, nous y restâmes trois jours.
Putting in at Syracuse, we stayed there three days.
De là, en suivant la côte, nous atteignîmes Reggio, et le lendemain, le vent soufflant du sud, nous arrivâmes en deux jours à Pouzzoles ;
From there we weighed anchor and came to Rhegium. After one day, a south wind came up, and on the second day we arrived at Puteoli.
nous y trouvâmes des frères qui nous prièrent de passer sept jours avec eux ; ensuite nous partîmes pour Rome.
There we found some brothers who invited us to spend the week with them. And so we came to Rome.
Ayant entendu parler de notre arrivée, les frères de cette ville vinrent au-devant de nous jusqu'au Forum d'Appius et aux Trois-Tavernes. Paul, en les voyant, rendit grâces à Dieu et fut rempli de confiance.
The brothers there had heard about us and traveled as far as the Forum of Appius (note: The Forum of Appius was about 43 miles or 70 kilometers from Rome.) and the Three Taverns (note: The Three Taverns was about 35 miles or 57 kilometers from Rome.) to meet us. When Paul saw them, he was encouraged and gave thanks to God.
Quand nous fûmes arrivés à Rome, on permit à Paul de demeurer en son particulier avec un soldat qui le gardait.
When we arrived in Rome (note: BYZ and TR include the centurion delivered up the prisoners to the captain of the barrack, but.), Paul was permitted to stay by himself, with a soldier to guard him.
Trois jours après, Paul fit appeler les principaux d'entre les Juifs, et quand ils furent venus, il leur dit : " Mes frères, sans avoir rien fait ni contre le peuple, ni contre les coutumes de nos pères, je suis prisonnier, et, depuis Jérusalem, livré au pouvoir des Romains.
After three days, he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered, he said to them, “Brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, I was taken prisoner in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans.
Après m'avoir interrogé, ils voulaient me relâcher, parce qu'il n'y avait rien en moi qui méritât la mort.
They examined me and wanted to release me, because there was no basis for a death sentence against me.
Mais les Juifs s'y opposèrent, et je me suis vu forcé d'en appeler à César, non certes que j'aie aucun dessein d'accuser ma nation.
But when the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, even though I have no charge to bring against my nation.
Voilà pourquoi j'ai demandé à vous voir et à vous parler ; car c'est à cause de l'espérance d'Israël que je porte cette chaîne. "
So for this reason I have called to see you and speak with you. It is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain.”
Ils lui répondirent : " Nous n'avons reçu de Judée aucune lettre à ton sujet, et aucun des frères qui en sont revenus n'a rien rapporté ou dit de défavorable à ton égard.
The leaders replied, “We have not received any letters about you from Judea, nor have any of the brothers from there reported or even mentioned anything bad about you.
Mais nous voudrions entendre de ta bouche ce que tu penses ; car, pour ce qui est de cette secte, nous savons qu'elle rencontre partout de l'opposition. "
But we consider your views worth hearing, because we know that people everywhere are speaking against this sect.”
Ayant pris jour avec lui, ils vinrent en plus grand nombre le trouver où il logeait. Paul leur exposa, dans un langage pressant, le royaume de Dieu, cherchant à les persuader, par la loi de Moïse et les Prophètes, de ce qui concerne Jésus. L'entretien dura depuis le matin jusqu'au soir.
So they set a day to meet with Paul, and many people came to the place he was staying. He expounded to them from morning to evening, testifying about the kingdom of God and persuading them about Jesus from the Law of Moses and the Prophets.
Les uns furent convaincus par ce qu'il disait, mais les autres ne crurent point.
Some of them were convinced by what he said, but others refused to believe.
Comme ils se retiraient en désaccord, Paul n'ajouta que ces mots : " Elle est bien vraie cette parole que le Saint-Esprit a dite à vos pères par le prophète Isaïe :
They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: “The Holy Spirit was right when He spoke to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet:
Va vers ce peuple, et dis-leur : Vous entendrez de vos oreilles, et vous ne comprendrez point ; vous regarderez de vos yeux, et vous ne verrez point.
‘Go to this people and say, “You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.”
Car le cœur de ce peuple est devenu insensible ; ils ont endurci leurs oreilles et ils ont fermé leurs yeux, de peur de voir de leurs yeux, d'entendre de leurs oreilles, de comprendre avec leur cœur, de se convertir et de recevoir de moi le salut. —
For this people’s heart has grown callous; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn, and I would heal them (note: Isaiah 6:9–10 (see also LXX)).’
Sachez donc que ce salut de Dieu a été envoyé aux Gentils ; pour eux, ils le recevront avec docilité. "
Be advised, therefore, that God’s salvation has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will listen (note: BYZ and TR include 29When he had said this, the Jews went away, disputing sharply among themselves.)!”
Paul demeura deux ans entiers dans une maison qu'il avait louée. Il recevait tous ceux qui venaient le visiter,
Paul stayed there two full years in his own rented house, welcoming all who came to visit him.
prêchant le royaume de Dieu et enseignant ce qui regarde le Seigneur Jésus-Christ, en toute liberté et sans empêchement.
Boldly and freely he proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ.
