Καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ ταῦτα καὶ ἐποίησεν ἑαυτῷ Ἀβςσσαλὼμ ἅρματα καὶ ἵππους καὶ πεντήκοντα ἄνδρας παρατρέχειν ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ.
Some time later, Absalom provided for himself a chariot with horses and fifty men to run ahead of him.
καὶ ὤρθρισεν Ἀβεσσαλὼμ καὶ ἔστη ἀνὰ χεῖρα τῆς ὁδοῦ τῆς πύλης· καὶ ἐγένετο πᾶς ἀνὴρ ῷ ἐγένετο κρίσις ἦλθεν πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα εἰς κρίσιν, καὶ ἐβόησεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Ἀβεσσαλὼμ καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτῷ Ἐκ ποίας πόλεως σὺ εἶ ; καὶ εἶπεν Ἐκ μιᾶς φυλῶν Ἰσραὴλ ὁ δοῦλός σου.
He would get up early and stand beside the road leading to the city gate. Whenever anyone had a grievance to bring before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out and ask, “What city are you from?” And if he replied, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel,”
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ Ἀβεσσαλώμ Ἰδοὺ οἱ λόγοι σου ἀγαθοὶ καὶ εὔκολοι, καὶ ἀκούων οὐκ ἔστιν σου παρὰ τοῦ βασιλέως.
Absalom would say, “Look, your claims are good and right, but the king has no deputy to hear you.”
καὶ εἶπεν Ἀβεσσαλώμ Τίς με καταστήσει κριτὴν ἐν τῇ γῇ, καὶ ἐπ’ ἐμὲ ἐλεύσεται πᾶς ἀνὴρ ᾦ ἐὰν ᾖ ἀντιλογία καὶ κρίσις καὶ δικαιώσω αὐτόν ;
And he would add, “If only someone would appoint me judge in the land, then everyone with a grievance or dispute could come to me, and I would give him justice.”
καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἐγγίζειν ἄνδρα τοῦ προσκυνῆσαι αὐτῷ, καὶ ἐξέτεινε τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπελαμβάνετο αὐτοῦ καὶ κατεφίλησεν αὐτόν.
Also, when anyone approached to bow down to him, Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him, and kiss him.
καὶ ἐποίησεν Ἀβεσσαλὼμ κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο παωτὶ Ἰσραὴλ τοῖς παραγινομένοις εἰς κρίσιν πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα, καὶ ἰδιοποιεῖτο Ἀβεσσαλὼμ τὴν καρδίαν ἀνδρῶν Ἰσραήλ.
Absalom did this to all the Israelites who came to the king for justice. In this way he stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
Καὶ ἐηένετο ἀπὸ τέλους τεσσεράκοντα ἐτῶν καὶ εἶπεν Ἀβεσσαλὼμ πρὸς τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ Πορεύσομαι δὴ καὶ ἀποτίσω τὰς εὐχάς μου ἅς ηὐξάμην τῷ κυρίῳ ἐν Χεβρών·
After four (note: Syriac and some LXX manuscripts; Hebrew forty) years had passed, Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go to Hebron to fulfill a vow I have made to the LORD.
ὅτι εὐχὴν ηὔξατο ὁ δοῦλός σου ἐν τῷοἰκεῖν με ἐν Γεδσοὺρ ἐν Συρίᾳ λέηων Ἐὰν ἐπιστρέφων ἐπιστρέψῃ με Κύριος εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ λατρεύσω τῷ κυρίῳ.
For your servant made a vow while dwelling in Geshur of Aram, saying: ‘If indeed the LORD brings me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the LORD in Hebron.’”
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ βασιλεύς Βάδιζε εἰς εἰρήνην· καὶ ἀναστὰς ἐποπεύθη εἰς Χεβρών.
“Go in peace,” said the king. So Absalom got up and went to Hebron.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ἀβεσσαλὼμ κατασκόπους ἐν πάσαις φυλαῖς Ἰσραὴλ λέγων Ἐν τῷ ἀκοῦσαι ὑμᾶς τὴν φωνὴν τῆς κερατίνης καὶ ἐρεῖτε Βεβαςίλεεθκεν βασιλεὺς Ἀβεσσαλὼμ ἐν Χεβρών.
Then Absalom sent spies throughout the tribes of Israel with this message: “When you hear the sound of the horn, you are to say, ‘Absalom reigns in Hebron!’”
καὶ μετὰ Ἀβεσσαλὼμ ἐπορεύθησαν διακόσιοι ἄνδρες ἐξ Ἰερουσαλὴμ κλητοί· καὶ πορευόμενοι τῇ ἁπλότητι ἀυτῶν καὶ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν πᾶν ῥῆμα.
Two hundred men from Jerusalem accompanied Absalom. They had been invited as guests and they went along innocently, for they knew nothing about the matter.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ἀβεσσαλὼμ τῷ Ἀχειτόφελ τῷ Θεκωνεὶ σύμβουλον Δαυεὶδ ἐν πόλει ἀυτοῦ εἰς Γωλὰ ἐν τῷ θυσιάζειν αὐτόν· καὶ ἐγένετο σύντριμμα ἰσχυρόν, καὶ ὁ λαὸς ὁ πορευόμενος καὶ πολὺς μετὰ Ἀβεσσαλώμ.
While Absalom was offering the sacrifices, he sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, to come from his hometown of Giloh. So the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom’s following kept increasing.
Καὶ παρεγένετο ὁ ἀπγγέλλων πρὸς Δαυεὶδ λέγων Ἐγενήθη ἡ καρδία ἀνδρῶν Ἰσραὴλ ὀπίσω Ἀβεσσαλώμ.
Then a messenger came to David and reported, “The hearts of the men of Israel are with Absalom.”
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πᾶσιν τοῖς πασὶ αὐτοῦ τοῖος ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ Ἀνάστητε καὶ φύγωμεν, ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ἡμῖν σωτηρία ἀπὸ προςώπου Ἀβεσσαλώμ· ταχύνατε τοῦ πορευθῆναι, ἵνα μὴ ταχύνῃ καὶ καταλάβῃ ἡμᾶς, καὶ ἐξώσῃ ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς τὴν κακίαν καὶ πατάξῃ τὴν πόλιν στόματι μαχαίρης.
And David said to all the servants with him in Jerusalem, “Arise and let us flee, or we will not escape from Absalom! We must leave quickly, or he will soon overtake us, heap disaster on us, and put the city to the sword.”
καὶ εἶπον οἱ παῖδες τοῦ βασιλέως πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Κατὰ πάντα ὅσα αἱρεῖται ὁ κύριος ἡμῶν ὁ βασιλεύς, ἰδοῦ οἱ παῖδές σου.
The king’s servants replied, “Whatever our lord the king decides, we are your servants.”
καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ πᾶς ὁ οἶκος αὐτοῦ τοῖς ποςὶν αὐτῶν· καὶ ἀφῆκεν ὁ βασιλεὺς δέκα γυναῖκας τῶν παλλακῶν αὐτοῦ φυλάσσειν τὸν οἶκον.
Then the king set out, and his entire household followed him. But he left behind ten concubines to take care of the palace.
καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ πάντες οἱ παῖδες αὐτοῦ πεζῇ, καὶ ἔστησαν ἐν οἴκῳ τῷ Μακράν.
So the king set out with all the people following him. He stopped at the last house,
καὶ παντες οἱ παῖδες αὐτοῦ ἀνὰ χεῖρα αὐτοῦ παρῆγον καὶ πᾶς ὁ Χεττεὶ καὶ πᾶς ὁ Φελετθεί, καὶ ἔστησαν ἐπὶ τῆς ελαίας ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ· καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς παρεπορεύετο ἐχόμενος αὐτοῦ, καὶ πάντες οἱ περὶ αὐτὸν καὶ πάντες οἱ ἁδροὶ καὶ πάντες οἱ μαχηταί, ἑξακόσιοι ἄνδρες, καὶ παρῆσαν ἐπὶ χεῖρα ἀυτοῦ· καὶ πᾶς ὁ Χερεθθεὶ καὶ πᾶς ὁ Φελεθθεὶ καὶ πάντες οἱ Γεθθαῖοι, οἱ ἑξακόσιοι ἄνδρες οἱ ἐλθόντες τοῖς ποςὶν αὐτῶν εἰς Γὲθ καὶ πορευτόμενοι ἐπὶ πρόσωπον τοῦ βασιλέως.
and all his servants marched past him—all the Cherethites and Pelethites, and six hundred Gittites who had followed him from Gath.
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς πρὸς Σεθθεὶ τὸν Γεθθαῖον Ἵνα τί πορεύῃ καὶ σὺ μεθ᾿ ἡμῶν ; ἐπίστρεφε καὶ οἴκει μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως , ὅτι ξένος εἶ σὺ καὶ ὅτι μετῴκηκας σὺ ἐκ τοῦ τόπου σου.
Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why should you also go with us? Go back and stay with the new king, since you are both a foreigner and an exile from your homeland.
εἰ ἐχθὲς παραγέγονας, καὶ σήμερον κινήσω σε μεθ᾿ ἡμῶν; καί γε μεταναστήσεις τὸν τόπον σου· ἐχθὲς ἡ ἐξέλευσίς σου, καὶ σήμερον μετακινήσω σε μεθ᾿ ἡμῶν τοῦ πορευθῆναι; καὶ ἐγὼ πορεύσομαι ἐφ᾿ οὗ ἂν ἐγὼ πορευθῶ. ἐπιστρέφου καὶ ἐπίστρψον τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου μετὰ σοῦ, καὶ Κύριος ποιήσει μετὰ σοῦ ἔλεος καὶ ἀλήθειαν.
In fact, you arrived only yesterday; should I make you wander around with us today while I do not know where I am going? Go back and take your brothers with you. May the LORD show you loving devotion and faithfulness (note: LXX; Hebrew May loving devotion and faithfulness be with you.).”
καὶ ἐπερίθη Ἐθθεὶ τῷ βασιλεῖ καὶ εἶπεν Ζῇ Κύριος καὶ ζῇ ὁ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεύς, ὅτι εἰς τὸν τόπον οὗ ἐὰν ᾖ ὁ κύριός μου, καὶ ἐὰν εἰς θάνατον καὶ ἐὰν εἰς ζωήν, ὅτι ἐκεῖ ἔσται ὁ δοῦλός σου.
But Ittai answered the king, “As surely as the LORD lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king may be, whether it means life or death, there will your servant be!”
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς πρὸς Σεθθεί Δεῦρο καὶ διάβαινε μετ᾿ ἐμοῦ· καὶ παρῆλθεν Σεθθεὶ ὁ Γεθθαῖος καὶ πάντες οἱ παῖδες αὐτοῦ καὶ πᾶς ὁ ὄχλος ὁ μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ.
“March on then,” said David to Ittai. So Ittai the Gittite marched past with all his men and all the little ones who were with him.
καὶ πᾶσα ἡ γῆ ἔκλάιεν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ· καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς παρεπορεύοντο ἐν τῷ χειμάρρῳ τῶν κέδρων, καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς διέβη τὸν χειάρρουν Κεδρών· καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς παρεπορύοντο ἐπὶ πρόσωπον ὁδοῦ τὴν ἔρημον.
Everyone in the countryside was weeping loudly as all the people passed by. And as the king crossed the Kidron Valley, all the people also passed toward the way of the wilderness.
καὶ ἰδοὺ καί γε Σαδδὼκ καὶ πάντες οἱ Λευεῖται μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ αἴροντες τὴν κιβωτὸν διαθήκης Κυρίου ἀπὸ Βαιθάρ· καὶ ἔστησαν τὴν κιβωτὸν τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ ἀνέβη Ἀβιαθάρ, ὡς ἐπαύσατο πᾶς ὁ λαὸς παρελθεῖν ἐκ τῆς πόλεως.
Zadok was also there, and all the Levites with him were carrying the ark of the covenant of God. And they set down the ark of God, and Abiathar offered sacrifices (note: Or Abiathar went up) until all the people had passed out of the city.
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τῷ Σαδδώκ Ἀπόστρεψον τὴν κιβωτὸν τοῦ θεοῦ εἰς τὴν πόλιν· ἐὰν εὕρω χάριν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς Κυρίου, καὶ ἐπιστρέψει με καὶ δείξει μοι ἀυτὴν καὶ τὴν εὐπρέπειαν αὐτῆς·
Then the king said to Zadok, “Return the ark of God to the city. If I find favor in the eyes of the LORD, He will bring me back and let me see both it and His dwelling place again.
καὶ ἐὰν εἴπῃ οὕτως Οὐκ ἠθέληκα ἐν σοί, ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ εἰμι, ποιείτω μοι κατὰ τὸ ἀγαθὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς αὐτοῦ.
But if He should say, ‘I do not delight in you,’ then here I am; let Him do to me whatever seems good to Him.”
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τῷ Σαδὼκ τῷ ἱερεῖ Ἴδετε, σὺ ἐπιστρέφεις εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἐν εἰρήνῃ, καὶ Ἀχειμαίας ὁ υἱός σου καὶ Ἰωναθὰν ὁ υἱὸς Ἀβιαθὰρ οἱ δύο υἱοὶ ὑμῶν μεθ᾿ ὐμων·
The king also said to Zadok the priest, “Are you not a seer? Return to the city in peace—you with your son Ahimaaz, and Abiathar with his son Jonathan.
ἴδετε, ἐγώ εἰμι στρατεύομαι ἐν ἀραβὼθ τῆς ἐρήμου ἕως τοῦ ἐλθεῖν ῥῆμα παρ᾿ ὑμῶν τοῦ ἀπαγγεῖλαί μοι.
See, I will wait at the fords of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.”
καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν Σαδὼκ καὶ Ἀβιαθὰρ τὴν κιβωτὸν εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐκεῖ.
So Zadok and Abiathar returned the ark of God to Jerusalem and stayed there.
καὶ Δαυεὶδ ἀνέβαινεν ἐν τῇ ἀναβάσει τῶν ἐλαιῶν καὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν ἐπικεκαλυμμένος, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐπορεύετο ἀνυόδετος· καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ὁ μετ’αὐτοῦ ἐπεκάλθψεν ἀνὴρ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀνέβαινον ἀναβαίνοντες καὶ κλαίοντες.
But David continued up the Mount of Olives, weeping as he went up. His head was covered, and he was walking barefoot. And all the people with him covered their heads and went up, weeping as they went.
καὶ ἀνηλλέλη Δαυεὶδ λέγοντες Καὶ Ἀχειτόφελ ἐν τοῖς συστρεφομένοις μετὰ Ἀβεσσαλώμ· καὶ εἶπεν Δαυείδ Διασκέδασον δὴ τὴν βουλὴν Ἀχειτόφελ, Κύριε ὁ θεός μου.
Now someone told David: “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” So David pleaded, “O LORD, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness!”
καὶ ἦν δαυεὶδ ἐρχόμενος ἕως τοῦ Ῥοώς, οὖ προσεκύνησεν ἐκεῖ τῷ θεῷ· καὶ ἰδοὺ εἰς ἀπαντὴν αὐτῷ Χουσεὶ ὁ Ἀρχί, ἑταῖρος Δαυείδ, διερρηχὼς. τὸν χιτῶνα αὐτοῦ καὶ γῆ ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ.
When David came to the summit, where he used to worship God, Hushai the Archite was there to meet him with his robe torn and dust on his head.
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Δαυείδ Ἐὰν μὲν διαβῇς μετ’ ἐμοῦ, καὶ ἔσῃ ἐπ’ ἐμὲ εἰς βάσταγμα.
David said to him, “If you go on with me, you will be a burden to me.
καὶ ἂν εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἐπιστρέψῃς, καὶ ἐρεῖς τῷ Ἀβεσσαλώμ Διεληλύθασιν οἱ ἀδελφοί σου, καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς κατόπισθέν μου διελήυθεν ὁ πατήρ σου· καὶ νῦν παῖς σού εἰμι, βασιλεῦ, ἔαςόν με ζῆσαι· παῖς τοῦ πατρός σου ἤμην τότε καὶ ἀρτίως, καῖ νῦν ἐγὼ δοῦλος σός· καὶ διασκεδάσεις μοι τὴν βουλὴν Ἀχειτόφελ.
But you can thwart the counsel of Ahithophel for me if you return to the city and say to Absalom: ‘I will be your servant, my king; in the past I was your father’s servant, but now I will be your servant.’
καὶ ἰδοὺ μετὰ σοῦ ἐκεῖ Σαδὼκ τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ ἀναγγελεῖς τῷ Σαδὼκ καὶ τῷ Ἀβιαθὰρ τοῖς ἱερεῦσιν.
Will not Zadok and Abiathar the priests be there with you? Report to them everything you hear from the king’s palace.
ἱδοὺ ἐκεῖ μετ’ αὐτῶν δύο υἱοὶ αὐτῶν, Ἀχειμάας υἱὸς τῷ Σαδὼκ καὶ Ἰωναθὰν υἱὸς τῷ Ἀβιαθάρ· καὶ ἀποστελεῖτε ἐν χειρὶ αὐτῶν πρὸς μὲ πᾶν ῥῆμα ὃ ἐὰν ἀκούσητε.
Indeed, their two sons, Ahimaaz son of Zadok and Jonathan son of Abiathar, are there with them. Send them to me with everything you hear.”
καὶ εἰσῆλθεν Χουσεὶ ὁ ἑταῖρος Δαυεὶδ εἰς τὴν πόλιν, καὶ Ἀβεσσαλὼμ εἰσεπορεύετο εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ. Καὶ
So David’s friend Hushai arrived in Jerusalem just as Absalom was entering the city.
