καὶ ἔγνω Ἰωὰβ υἱὸς Σαρουίας ὅτι ἡ καρδία τοῦ βασιλέως ἐπὶ Ἀβεσσαλώμ.
Now Joab son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart longed for Absalom.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ἰωὰβ εἰς θεκῶε, καὶ ἔλαβεν ἐκεῖθεν γυναῖκα σοφὴν καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτήν Πένθησον δὴ καὶ ἔνδυσαι ἱμάτια πενθικὰ καὶ μὴ ἀλείψῃ ἔλαιον, καὶ ἔσῃ ὡς γυνὴ πενθοῦσα ἐπὶ τεθνηκότι, τοῦτο ἡμέρας πολλάς·
So Joab sent to Tekoa to bring a wise woman from there. He told her, “Please pretend to be a mourner; put on clothes for mourning and do not anoint yourself with oil. Act like a woman who has mourned for the dead a long time.
καὶ ἐλεύςῃ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα καὶ λαλήσεις πρὸς αὐτὸν κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο. καὶ ἔθηκεν Ἰωὰβ τοὺς λόγους ἐν τῷ στόματι αὐτῆς.
Then go to the king and speak these words to him.” And Joab put the words in her mouth.
καὶ εἰσῆλθεν ἡ γυνὴ ἡ θεκωεῖτις πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα, καὶ ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτῆς εἰς τὴν γῆν καὶ προσεκύνησεν αὐτῷ καὶ εἶπεν Σῶσον, βασιλεῦ, σῶσον.
When the woman from Tekoa went to the king, she fell facedown in homage and said, “Help me, O king!”
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὴν ὁ βασιλεύς Τί ἔστιν σοι; ἡ δὲ εἶπεν Καὶ μάλα γυνὴ χήρα ἐγώ εἰμι, καὶ ἀπέθανεν ὁ ἀνήρ μου.
“What troubles you?” the king asked her. “Indeed,” she said, “I am a widow, for my husband is dead.
καί γε τῇ δούλῃ σου δύο υἱοι, καὶ ἐμαχέσαντο ἀμφότεροι ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ, καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ ἐξαιρούμενος ἀνὰ μέσον αὐτῶν, καὶ ἔπασεν ὁ εἶς τὸν ἕνα ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐθανάτωσεν αὐτόν.
And your maidservant had two sons who were fighting in the field with no one to separate them, and one struck the other and killed him.
καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐπανέστη ὁλη ἡ πατριὰ πρὸς τὴν δούλην σου καὶ εἶπαν Δὸς τὸν παίσαντα τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ θανατώσομεν αὐτὸν ἀντὶ τῆς ψυχῆς τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ οὗ ἀπέκτεινεν, καὶ ἐξαροῦμεν καί γε τὸν κληρονόμον ὑμῶν· καὶ σβέσουσιν τὸν ἄνθρακά μου τὸν καταλειφθέντα ὥστε μὴ θέσθαι τῷ ἀνδρί μου κατάλειμμα καὶ ὄνομα ἐπὶ προςώπου τῆς γῆς.
Now the whole clan has risen up against your maidservant and said, ‘Hand over the one who struck down his brother, that we may put him to death for the life of the brother whom he killed. Then we will cut off the heir as well!’ So they would extinguish my one remaining ember by not preserving my husband’s name or posterity on the earth.”
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεύς Ὑγιαίνουσα βάδιζε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου, κἀγὼ ἐντελοῦμαι περὶ σοῦ.
“Go home,” the king said to the woman, “and I will give orders on your behalf.”
καὶ εἶπεν ἡ γυνὴ ἡ Φεκωεῖτις πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Ἐπ’ κύριέ μου βασιλεῦ, ἡ ἀνομία καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν οἶκον τοῦ πατρός μου, καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ ὁ θρόνος αὐτοῦ ἀθῷος.
But the woman of Tekoa said to the king, “My lord the king, may any blame be on me and on my father’s house, and may the king and his throne be guiltless.”
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεύς Τίς ὁ λαλῶν πρὸς σέ; καὶ ἄξεις αὐτὸν πρὸς ἐμέ, καὶ οὐ προσθήσει ἔτι ἅψασθαι αὐτοῦ.
“If anyone speaks to you,” said the king, “bring him to me, and he will not trouble you again!”
καὶ εἶπεν Μνημονευςάτω δὴ ὁ βασαιλεὺς τὸν κύριον θεὸν αὐτοῦ, πληθυνθῆναι ἀγχιστέα τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ διαφθεῖραι, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐξάρωσιν τὸν υἱόν μου· καὶ εἶπεν Ζῇ Κύριος, εἰ πεσεῖται ἀπὸ τῆς τριχὸς τοῦ υἱοῦ σου ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν.
“Please,” she replied, “may the king invoke the LORD your God to prevent the avenger of blood from increasing the devastation, so that my son may not be destroyed!” “As surely as the LORD lives,” he vowed, “not a hair of your son’s head will fall to the ground.”
καὶ εἶπεν Λαληςάτω δὴ ἡ δούλη σου πρὸς τὸν κύριόν μου βασιλέα ῥῆμα· καὶ εἶπεν Λάλησον.
Then the woman said, “Please, may your servant speak a word to my lord the king?” “Speak,” he replied.
καὶ εἶπεν ἡ γυνή Ἵνα τί ἐλογίσω τοιοῦτο ἐπὶ λαὸν θεοῦ; ἤ ἐκ στόματος τοῦ βασιλέως ὁ λόγος οὗτος ὡς πλημμέλεια, τοῦ μὴ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα τὸν ἐξωσμένον αὐτοῦ;
The woman asked, “Why have you devised a thing like this against the people of God? When the king says this, does he not convict himself, since he has not brought back his own banished son?
ὅτε θανάτῳ ἀποθανόύμεθα, καὶ ὥσπερ τὸ ὕδωρ τὸ καταφθειρόμενον ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ὅ οὐ συναχθήσεται· καὶ λήμψεται ὁ θεὸς ψυχήν, καὶ λογιζόμενος τοῦ ἐξῶσαι ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ ἐξεωσμένον.
For we will surely die and be like water poured out on the ground, which cannot be recovered. Yet God does not take away a life, but He devises ways that the banished one may not be cast out from Him.
καὶ νῦν ὅ ἦλθον λαλῆσαι πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα κύριόν μου τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο, ὅτι ὄψεταί με ὁ λαός, καὶ ἐρεῖ ὁ λαός σου Λαληςάτω δὴ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα, εἴ πως ποιήσει ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸ ῥῆμα τῆς δούλης αὐτοῦ·
Now therefore, I have come to present this matter to my lord the king because the people have made me afraid. Your servant thought, ‘I will speak to the king. Perhaps he will grant the request of his maidservant.
ὅτι ἀκούσει ὁ βασιλεύς· ῥυςάσθω τὴν δούλην αὐτοῦ ἐκ χειρὸς τοῦ ἀνδρὸς τοῦ ζητοῦντος ἐξᾶραί με καὶ τὸν υἱόν μου ἀπὸ κληρονομίας θεοῦ.
For the king will hear and deliver his maidservant from the hand of the man who would cut off both me and my son from God’s inheritance.’
καὶ εἶπεν ἡ γυνή Εἴη δὴ ὁ λόγος τοῦ κυρίου μου τοῦ βασιλέως εἰς θυςίας, ὅτι καθὼς ἄγγελος θεοῦ οὕτως ὁ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεὺς τοῦ ἀκούειν τὸ ἀγαθὸν καὶ τὸ πονηρόν, καὶ Κύριος ὁ θεός σου ἔσται μετὰ σοῦ.
And now your servant says, ‘May the word of my lord the king bring me rest, for my lord the king is able to discern good and evil, just like the angel (note: Or Angel; also in verse 20) of God. May the LORD your God be with you.’”
καὶ ἀπεκρίθη ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα Μὴ δὴ κρύψῃς ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ ῥῆμα ὅ ἐγὼ ἐπερωτῶ σε· καὶ εἶπεν ἡ γυνή Λαληςάτω δὴ ὀ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεύς.
Then the king said to the woman, “I am going to ask you something; do not conceal it from me!” “Let my lord the king speak,” she replied.
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεύς Μὴ ἡ χεὶρ Ἰωὰβ ἐν παντὶ τούτῳ μετὰ σοῦ; καὶ εἶπεν ἡ γυνὴ τῷ βασιλεῖ Ζῇ ἡ χθψή σου, κύριέ μου βασιλεῦ, εἰ ἔστιν εἰς τὰ δεχιὰ ἤ εἰς τὰ ἀριστερὰ ἐκ πάντων ὧν ἐλάλησεν ὁ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεύς· ὅτι ὁ δοῦλός σου Ἰωὰβ αὐτὸς ἐνετείλατό μοι, καὶ αὐτὸς ἔθετο ἐν τῷ στόματι τῆς δοὺλης σου πάντας τοὺς λόγους κούτους·
So the king asked, “Is the hand of Joab behind all this?” The woman answered, “As surely as you live, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything that my lord the king says. Yes, your servant Joab is the one who gave me orders; he told your maidservant exactly what to say.
ἕνεκεν τοῦ περιελθεῖν τὸ πρόσωπον τοῦ ῥήματος τούτου ὅ ἐποίησεν ὁ δοῦλός σου Ἰωάβ, τὸν δόλον τοῦτον· καὶ ὁ κύριός μου σοφὸς καθὼς σοφία ἀγγέλου τοῦ θεοῦ, τοῦ γνῶναι πάντα τὰ ἐν τῇ γῇ.
Joab your servant has done this to bring about this change of affairs, but my lord has wisdom like the wisdom of the angel of God, to know everything that happens in the land.”
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς πρὸς Ἰωάβ Ἰδοὺ δὴ ἐποίηςά σοι κατὰ τὸν λόγον σου τοῦτον· ἐπίστρεψον τὸ παιδάριον τὸν Ἀβεσσαλώμ.
Then the king said to Joab, “I hereby grant this request. Go, bring back the young man Absalom.”
καὶ ἔπεσεν Ἰωάβ ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ προσεκύνησεν καὶ εὐλόγησεν τὸν βασιλέα, καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωάβ Σήμερον ἔγνω ὁ δοῦλός σου ὅτι εὗρον χάριν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου, κύριέ μον βασιλεῦ, ὅτι ἐποίησεν ὁ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸν λόγον τοῦ δούλου αὐτοῦ.
Joab fell facedown in homage and blessed the king. “Today,” said Joab, “your servant knows that he has found favor in your eyes, my lord the king, because the king has granted his request.”
καὶ ἀνέστη Ἰωὰβ καὶ ἐπορεύθη εἰς Γεδσούρ, καὶ ἤγαγεν τὸν Ἀβεσσαλὼμ εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ.
So Joab got up, went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεύς Ἀποστραφήτω εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ, καὶ τὸ πρόσωπόν μου μὴ βλεπέτω· καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν Ἀβεσσαλὼμ εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ, καὶ τὸ πρόσωπον τοῦ βασιλέως οὐκ εἶδεν.
But the king added, “He may return to his house, but he must not see my face.” So Absalom returned to his own house, but he did not see the face of the king.
καὶ ὡς Ἀβεσσαλὼμ οὐκ ἦν ἀνὴρ ἐν καντὶ Ἰσραὴλ αὐνετὸς σφόδρα· ἀπὸ ἴχνους ποδὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἕως κορυφῆς αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἦν ἐν αὐτῷ μῶμος.
Now there was not a man in all Israel as handsome and highly praised as Absalom. From the sole of his foot to the top of his head, he did not have a single flaw.
καὶ ἐν τῷ κείρεσθαι αὐτὸν τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐγένετο ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς ἡμερῶν εἰς ἡμέρας ὡς ἄν ἐκείρετο, ὅτι κατεβαρύνετο ἐπ’ ἀυτόν, καὶ κειρόμενος ἀυτὴν ἔστησεν τὴν τρίχα τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ διακοςίους σίκλους ἐν τῷ σίκλῳ τῷ βασιλικῷ.
And when he cut the hair of his head—he shaved it every year because his hair got so heavy—he would weigh it out to be two hundred shekels (note: 200 shekels is approximately 5 pounds or 2.3 kilograms of hair.), according to the royal standard.
καὶ ἐτέχθησαν τῷ Ἀβεσσαλὼμ τρεῖς υἱοὶ καὶ θυγάτηρ μία, καὶ ὄνομα αὐτῇ Θημάρ· αὕτη ἦν γυνὴ αὐτῷ τὸν Ἀβιαθάρ.
Three sons were born to Absalom, and a daughter named Tamar, who was a beautiful woman.
Καὶ ἐκάθισεν Ἀβεσσαλὼμ ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ δύο ἡμερῶν καὶ τὸ πρόσωπον τοῦ βασιλέως οὐκ εἶδεν.
Now Absalom lived in Jerusalem two years without seeing the face of the king.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ἀβεσσαλὼμ πρὸς Ἰωὰβ ἀποστεῖλαι αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα, καὶ οὐκ ἠθέλησεν ἐλθεῖν πρὸς αὐτόν· καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ἐκ δευτέρου πρὸς αὐτόν, καὶ οὐκ ἠθέλησεν παραγενέσθαι.
Then he sent for Joab to send him to the king, but Joab refused to come to him. So Absalom sent a second time, but Joab still would not come.
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ Ἀβεσσαλώμ Ἴδετε ἡ μερὶς ἐν ἐγρῷ τοῦ Ἰωὰβ ἐχόμενά μου, καὶ αὐτῷ κριθαὶ ἐκεῖ· πορεύεσθε καὶ ἐμπρήσατε αὐτὴν ἐν πυρί· καὶ ἐνέπρησαν αὐτὰς οἱ παῖδες Ἀβεσσαλώμ, τὴν μερίδα. καὶ παραγίνονται οἱ δοῦλοι Ἰωὰβ πρὸς αὐτὸν διερρηχότες τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτῶν καὶ εἶπαν Ἐνεπύρισαν οἱ δοῦλοι Ἀβεσσαλὼμ τὴν μερίδα ἐν πυπρί.
Then Absalom said to his servants, “Look, Joab’s field is next to mine, and he has barley there. Go and set it on fire!” And Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.
καὶ ἀνέστη Ἰωὰβ καὶ ἦλθεν πρὸς ἀβεσσαλὼμ εἰς τὸν οἶκον, καὶ εἶπεω πρὸς αὐτόν Ἵνα τί οἱ παῖδές σου ἐνεπύρισαν τὴν μερίδα τὴν ἐμὴν ἐν πυρί;
Then Joab came to Absalom’s house and demanded, “Why did your servants set my field on fire?”
καὶ εἶπεν Ἀβεσσαλὼμ πρὸς Ἰωάβ Ἰδοὺ ἀπέστειλα πρὸς σὲ λέγων Ἦκε ὦδε καὶ ἀποστελῶ σε πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα λέγων Ἵνα τί ἦλθον ἐκ Γεδσούρ; ἀγαθόν μοι ἦν εἶναι ἐκεῖ· καὶ νῦν ἰδοὺ τὸ πρόσωπον τοῦ βασιλέως οὐκ εἶδον· εἰ δέ ἐστιν ἐν ἐμοὶ ἀδικία, καὶ θανάτωςόν με.
“Look,” said Absalom, “I sent for you and said, ‘Come here. I want to send you to the king to ask: Why have I come back from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there.’ So now, let me see the king’s face, and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me.”
καὶ εἰσῆλθεν Ἰωὰβ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα καὶ ἀπήγγειλεν αὐτῷ, καὶ προσεκύνγσεν αὐτῷ, καὶ ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ κατὰ πρςόσωπον τοῦ βασιλέως. καὶ κατεφίλησεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸν Ἀβεσσαλώμ.
So Joab went and told the king, and David summoned Absalom, who came to him and bowed facedown before him. Then the king kissed Absalom.
