Καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἦλθον οἱ υἱοὶ Μωὰβ καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ Ἀμμῶν καὶ μετʼ αὐτῶν ἐκ τῶν Μειναίων πρὸς Ἰωσαφὰτ εἰς πόλεμον.
After this, the Moabites and Ammonites, together with some of the Meunites (note: Some LXX manuscripts (see also 2 Chronicles 26:7); Hebrew together with some other Ammonites or together with some besides the Ammonites), came to make war against Jehoshaphat.
καὶ ἦλθον καὶ ὑπέδειξαν τῷ Ἰωσαφὰτ λέγοντες Ἥκει ἐπὶ σέ πλῆθος πολὺ ἐκ πέραν τῆς θαλάσσης ἀπὸ Συρίας, καὶ ἰδού εἰσιν ἐν Ἀσὰμ Θμόρά, αὕτη ἐστὶν Ἐνγάδει.
Then some men came and told Jehoshaphat, “A vast army is coming against you from Edom (note: One Hebrew manuscript; most Hebrew manuscripts, LXX, and Vulgate Aram), from beyond the Sea (note: That is, the Dead Sea); they are already in Hazazon-tamar” (that is, En-gedi).
καὶ ἐφοβήθη, καὶ ἔδωκεν Ἰωσαφὰτ τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ ἐκζητῆσαι τὸν κύριον, καὶ ἐκήρυξαν νηστείαν.
Jehoshaphat was alarmed and set his face to seek the LORD. And he proclaimed a fast throughout Judah.
καὶ συνήχθη Ἰούδας ἐκζητῆσαι τὸν κύριον, καὶ ἀπὸ πασῶν τῶν πόλεων Ἰούδας ἦλθον ζητῆσαι τὸν κύριον.
So the people of Judah gathered to seek the LORD, and indeed, they came from all the cities of Judah to seek Him.
καὶ ἀνέστη Ἰωσαφὰτ ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ Ἰούδα ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἐν οἴκῳ Κυρίου κατὰ πρόσωπον τῆς αὐλῆς τῆς καινῆς,
Then Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem in the house of the LORD in front of the new courtyard
καὶ εἶπεν Κύριε ὁ θεὸς τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν, οὐχὶ σὺ εἶ θεὸς ἐν οὐρανῷ ἄνω, καὶ σὺ κυριεύεις πασῶν τῶν βασιλειῶν τῶν ἐθνῶν, καὶ ἐυ τῇ χειρί σου ἰσχὺς δυναστείας, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν πρὸς σέ ἀντίστῆναι;
and said, “O LORD, God of our fathers, are You not the God who is in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in Your hand, and no one can stand against You.
οὐχὶ σὺ ὁ κύριος ἐξωλέθρευσας τοὺς κατοικοῦντας τὴν γῆν ταύτην ἀπὸ προσώπου Ἰσραήλ, καὶ ἔδωκας αὐτὴν σπέρματι Ἀβραὰμ τῷ ἠγαπημένῳ σου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα;
Our God, did You not drive out the inhabitants of this land before Your people Israel and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham Your friend?
καὶ κατῴκησαν ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ ᾠκοδόμησαν ἐν αὐτῇ ἁγίασμα τῷ ὀνόματί σου λέγοντες
They have lived in the land and have built in it a sanctuary for Your Name, saying,
Ἐὰν ἐπέλθῃ ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς κακά, όομφαία, κρίσις, θάνατος, λιμός, στησόμεθα ἐναντίον τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ καὶ ἐναντίον σου, ὅτι τὸ ὄνομά σου ἐπὶ τῷ οἴκῳ τούτῳ, καὶ βοησόμεθα πρὸς σέ ἀπὸ τῆς θλίψεως, καὶ ἀκούσῃ καὶ σώσεις.
‘If disaster comes upon us—whether sword or judgment (note: Or the sword of judgment), plague or famine—we will stand before this temple and before You, for Your Name is in this temple. We will cry out to You in our distress, and You will hear us and save us.’
καὶ νῦν ἰδοὺ υἱοὶ Ἀμμὼν καὶ ὄρος Σηείρ, εἰς οὓς οὐκ ἔδωκας τῷ Ἰσραὴλ διελθεῖν δι᾿ αὐτῶν, ἐξελθόντων αὐτῶν ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου, ὅτι ἐξέκλιναν ἀπʼ αὐτῶν καὶ οὐκ ἐξωλέθρευσαν αὐτούς·
And now, here are the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, whom You did not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt. So Israel turned away from them and did not destroy them.
καὶ νῦν ἰδοὺ αὐτοὶ ἐπιχειροῦσιν ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς ἐξελθεῖν ἐκβαλεῖν ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ τῆς κληρονομίας ἡμῶν ἧς ἔδωκας ἡμῖν,
See how they are repaying us by coming to drive us out of the possession that You gave us as an inheritance.
Κύριε ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν· οὐ κρινεῖς ἐν αὐτοῖς; ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ἡμῖν ἰσχὺς τοῦ ἀντιστῆναι πρὸς τὸ πλῆθος τὸ πολὺ τοῦτο τὸ ἐλθὸν ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς, καὶ οὐκ οἴδαμεν τἰ ποιήσωμεν αὐτοῖς· ἀλλ᾿ ἢ ἐπὶ σοὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ ἡμῶν.
Our God, will You not judge them? For we are powerless before this vast army that comes against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”
καὶ πᾶς Ἰουδὰ ἑστηκὼς ἔναντι Κυρίου, καὶ τὰ παιδία αὐτῶν καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες.
Meanwhile all the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, were standing before the LORD.
καὶ τῷ Οζειὴλ τῷ τοῦ Σαχαρίου τῶν υἱῶν Ἐλεαὴλ τοῦ Μανθανίου τοῦ Λευείτου ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν Ἀσάφ, ἐγένετο ἐπʼ αὐτὸν πνεῦμα Κυρίου ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ,
Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite from Asaph’s descendants, as he stood in the midst of the assembly.
καὶ εἶπεν Ἀκούσατε, πᾶς Ἰουδὰ καὶ οἱ κατοικοῦντες Ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἰωσαφάτ, τάδε λέγει Κύριος ὑμῖν αὐτοῖς Μὴ φοβεῖσθε μηδὲ πτοηθῆτε ἀπὸ προσώπου τοῦ ὄχλου τοῦ πολλοῦ τούτου, ὅτι οὐχ ὑμῖν ἐστὶν ἡ παράταξις ἀλλ ἣ τῷ θεῷ.
And he said, “Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Listen, King Jehoshaphat! This is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army, for the battle does not belong to you, but to God.
αὔριον κατάβητε ἐπʼ αὐτούς· ἰδοὺ ἀναβαίνουσιν κατὰ τὴν ἀνάβασιν Ἀσᾶε, καὶ εὑρήσετε αὐτοὺς ἐπʼ ἄκρου ποταμοῦ τῆς ἐρήμου Ἰεριήλ.
Tomorrow you are to march down against them. You will see them coming up the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the valley facing the Wilderness of Jeruel.
οὐχ ὑμῖν ἐστὶν πολεμῆσαι· ταῦτα σύνετε καὶ ἴδετε τὴν σωτηρίαν Κυρίου μεθʼ ὑμῶν· ἰδοὺ καὶ Ἰερουσαλήμ· μὴ πτοηθῆτε μηδὲ φοβηθῆτε αὐτόν, ἐξελθεῖν εἰς ἀπάντησιν αὐτοῖς, καὶ Κύριος μεθʼ ὑμῶν.
You need not fight this battle. Take up your positions, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Go out and face them tomorrow, for the LORD is with you.’”
καὶ κύψας Ἰωσαφὰτ ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ καὶ πᾶς Ἰουδὰ καὶ οἱ κατοικοῦντες Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἔπεσαν ἔναντι Κυρίου προσκυνῆσαι Κυρίῳ.
Then Jehoshaphat bowed facedown, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down before the LORD to worship Him.
καὶ ἀνέστησαν οἱ Λευεῖται ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν Καὰθ καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν Κόρε αἰνεῖν Κυρίῳ θεῷ Ἰσραὴλ ἐν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ εἰς ὕψος.
And the Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up to praise the LORD, the God of Israel, shouting in a very loud voice.
καὶ ὥρθρισαν πρωὶ καὶ ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὴν ἔρημον εκώε· καὶ ἐν τῷ ἐξελθεῖν ἔστη Ἰωσαφὰτ καὶ ἐβόησεν Ἀκούσατέ μου, Ἰουδὰ καὶ οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ· ἐνπιστεύσατε ἐν Κυρίῳ θεῷ ὑμῶν, καὶ ἐνπιστευθήσεσθε· ἐνπιστεύσατε ἐν προφήτῃ αὐτοῦ, καὶ εὐοδωθήσεσθε.
Early in the morning they got up and left for the Wilderness of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood up and said, “Hear me, O people of Judah and Jerusalem. Believe in the LORD your God, and you will be upheld; believe in His prophets, and you will succeed.”
καὶ ἐβουλεύσατο μετὰ τοῦ λαοῦ, καὶ ἔστησεν ψαλτῳδοὺς καὶ αἰνοῦντας ἐξομολογεῖσθαι καὶ αἰνεῖν τὰ ἅγια ἐν τῷ ἐξελθεῖν ἔμπροσθεν τῆς δυνάμεως· καὶ ἔλεγεν Ἐξομολογεῖσθε τῷ κυρίῳ. ὅτι εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦ.
Then Jehoshaphat consulted with the people and appointed those who would sing to the LORD and praise the splendor of His holiness. As they went out before the army, they were singing: “Give thanks to the LORD, for His loving devotion endures forever.”
καὶ ἐν τῷ ἄρξασθαι τῆς αἰνέσεως αὐτοῦ τῆς ἐξομολογήσεως ἔδωκεν Κύριος πολεμεῖν τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἀμμὼν ἐπὶ Μωὰβ καὶ ὄρος Σηεὶρ τοὺς ἐξελθόντας ἐπὶ Ἰουδά, καὶ ἐτροπώθησαν.
The moment they began their shouts and praises, the LORD set ambushes against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir who had come against Judah, and they were defeated.
καὶ ἀπέστησαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἀμμὼν καὶ Μωὰβ ἐπὶ τοὺς κατοικοῦντας ὄρος Σηεὶρ ἐξολεθρεῦσαι καὶ ἐκτρίψαι· καὶ ὡς συνετέλεσαν τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Σηείρ, ἀνέστησαν εἰς ἀλλήλους τοῦ ἐξολοθρευθῆναι.
The Ammonites and Moabites rose up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir, devoting them to destruction (note: Forms of the Hebrew cherem refer to the giving over of things or persons to the LORD, either by destroying them or by giving them as an offering.). And when they had finished off the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another.
καὶ Ἰούδας ἦλθεν ἐπὶ τὴν σκοπιὰν τῆς ἐρήμου, καὶ ἐπέβλεψεν καὶ εἶδεν τὸ πλῆθος· καὶ ἰδοὺ πάντες νεκροὶ πεπταωκότες ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, οὐκ ἦν σωζόμενος.
When the men of Judah came to a place overlooking the wilderness, they looked for the vast army, but there were only corpses lying on the ground; no one had escaped.
καὶ ἦλθεν Ἰωσαφὰτ καὶ ὁ λαὸς αὐτοῦ σκυλεῦσαι τὰ σκῦλα αὐτῶν, καὶ εὗρον κτήνη πολλὰ καὶ ἀποσκευὴν καὶ σκῦλα καὶ σκεύη ἐπιθυμητά, καὶ ἐσκύλευσεν ἐυ αὐτοῖς· καὶ ἐγένοντο ἡμέραι τρεῖς σκυλευόντων αὐτῶν τὰ σκῦλα, ὅτι πολλὰ ἦν.
Then Jehoshaphat and his people went to carry off the plunder, and they found on the bodies an abundance of goods and valuables—more than they could carry away. They were gathering the plunder for three days because there was so much.
καὶ ἐγένετο τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τετάρτῃ ἐπισυνήχθησαν εἰς τὸν αὐλῶνα τῆς εὐλογίας, ἐκεῖ γὰρ ηὐλόγησαν τὸν κύριον· διὰ τοῦτο ἐκάλεσαν τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου Κοιλὰς εὐλογίας ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης.
On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah (note: Beracah means blessing.), where they blessed the LORD. Therefore that place is called the Valley of Beracah to this day.
καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν πᾶς ἀνὴρ Ἰούδα εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ Ἰωσαφὰτ ἡγούμενος αὐτῶν ἐν εὐφροσύνῃ μεγάλῃ, ὅτι εὔφραινεν οὐτοὺς Κύριος ἀπὸ τῶν ἐχθρῶν αὐτῶν.
Then all the men of Judah and Jerusalem, with Jehoshaphat at their head, returned joyfully to Jerusalem, for the LORD had made them rejoice over their enemies.
καὶ εἰσῆλθον ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἐν νάβλαις καὶ ἐν κινύραις καὶ ἐν σάλπιγξιν εἰς οἶκον Κυρίου.
So they entered Jerusalem and went into the house of the LORD with harps, lyres, and trumpets.
καὶ ἐγένετο ἔκστασις Κυρίου ἐπὶ πάσας τὰς βασιλείας τῆς γῆς ἐν τῷ ἀκοῦσαι αὐτοὺς ὅτι ἐπολέμησεν Κύριος πρὸς τοὺς ὑπεναντίους Ἰσραήλ.
And the fear of God came upon all the kingdoms of the lands when they heard that the LORD had fought against the enemies of Israel.
καὶ εἰρήνευσεν ἡ βασιλεία Ἰωσαφάτ, καὶ κατέπαυσεν αὐτῷ ὁ θεὸς αὐτοῦ κυκλόθεν.
Then Jehoshaphat’s kingdom was at peace, for his God had given him rest on every side.
Καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Ἰωσαφὰτ ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰουδά, ἐτῶν τριάκοντα πέντε ἐν τῷ βασιλεῦσαι αὐτόν, καὶ εἵκοσι πέντε ἔτη ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ ὄνομα τῇ μητρὶ αὐτοῦ Ἀζουβὰ θυγάτηρ Σολει
So Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-five years. His mother’s name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi.
καὶ ἐπορεύθη ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ Ἀσά, καὶ οὐκ ἐξέκλινεν τοῦ ποιῆσαι τὸ εὐθὲς ἐνώπιον Κυρίου.
And Jehoshaphat walked in the way of his father Asa and did not turn away from it; he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD.
ἀλλὰ τὰ ὑψηλὰ ἔτι ὑπῆρχεν, καὶ ἔτι ὁ λαὸς οὐ κατεύθυνεν τὴν καρδίαν πρὸς Κύριον θεὸν τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ.
The high places, however, were not removed; the people had not yet set their hearts on the God of their fathers.
καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ λόγοι Ἰωσαφὰτ οἱ πρῶτοι καὶ οἱ ἔσχατοι ἰδοὺ γεγραμμένοι ἐν λόγοις Ἰησοῦ τοῦ Ἀνανεί, ὅς κατέγραψεν βιβλίου βασιλέως Ἰσραήλ.
As for the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, from beginning to end, they are indeed written in the Chronicles of Jehu son of Hanani, which are recorded in the Book of the Kings of Israel.
Καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἐκοινώνησεν Ἰωσαφὰτ πρὸς Ὀχοζείαν βασιλέα Ἰσραήλ, καὶ οὗτος ἠνόμησεν
Later, Jehoshaphat king of Judah made an alliance with Ahaziah king of Israel, who acted wickedly (note: Or who made him act wickedly or by which he acted wickedly).
ἐν τῷ ποιῆσαι καὶ πορευθῆναι πρὸς αὐτὸν τοῦ ποιῆσαι πλοῖα τοῦ πορευθῆναι εἰς θαρσείς· καὶ ἐποίησεν πλοῖα ἐν Γασιὼν Γάβερ.
They agreed to make ships to go to Tarshish (note: Or a fleet of trading ships), and these were built in Ezion-geber.
καὶ ἐπροφήτευσεν Ἐλειαδὰ ὁ τοῦ Ὠδειὰ ἀπὸ Μαρείσης ἐπὶ Ἰωσαφὰτ λέγων Ὡς ἐφιλίασας τῷ χοζεία, ἔθραυσεν Κύριος τὸ ἔργον σου, καὶ συνετρίβη τὰ πλοῖά σου. καὶ οὐκ ἐδυνάσθη τοῦ πορευθῆναι εἰς βαρσείς.
Then Eliezer son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, “Because you have allied yourself with Ahaziah, the LORD has destroyed your works.” So the ships were wrecked and were unable to sail to Tarshish (note: Or set sail to trade).
