θυμιῶντες ἐπὶ τοῖς ὑψηλοῖς, ὅτι οὐκ ᾠκοδομήθη οἶκος τῷ κυριῳ ἕως νῦν.
The people, however, were still sacrificing on the high places because a house for the Name of the LORD had not yet been built.
καὶ ἠγάπησεν Σαλωμὼν τὸν κύριον, πορεύεσθαι ἐν τοῖς προστάγμασιν Δαυεὶδ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ, πλὴν ἐν τοῖς ὑψηλοῖς ἔθυεν καὶ ἐθυμία.
And Solomon loved the LORD and walked in the statutes of his father David, except that he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.
καὶ ἀνέστη καὶ ἐπορεύθη εἰς Γαβαὼν θῦσαι ἐκεῖ, ὅτι αὐτὴ ὑψηλοτάτη καὶ μ(??)γάλη· χιλίαν ολοκαύτωσιν ἀνήνεγκεν Σαλωμὼν ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον ἐν Γαβαών.
Now the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for it was the great high place. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on the altar there.
καὶ ὤφθη Κύριος τῷ Σαλωμὼν ἐν ὕπνῳ τὴν νύκτα· καὶ εἶπεν Κύριος πρὸς Σαλωμών Αἴτησαί τι αἴτημα σαυτῷ.
One night at Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, “Ask, and I will give it to you!”
καὶ εἶπεν Σαλωμώνβ Σύ ἐποίησας μετὰ σοῦ, δούλου σου Δαυεὶδ τοῦ πατρός μου ἔλεος μέγα, καθὼς διῆλθεν ἐνώπιόν σου ἐν ἀληθείᾳ καὶ ἐν δικαιοςύνῃ καὶ ἐν εὐθύτητι καρδίας μετὰ σοῦ, καὶ ἐφύλαξας αὐτῷ τὸ ἔλεος τὸ μέγα τοῦτο, δοῦναι τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τοῦ θρόνου αὐτοῦ ὡς ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη.
Solomon replied, “You have shown much loving devotion to Your servant, my father David, because he walked before You in faithfulness, righteousness, and uprightness of heart. And You have maintained this loving devotion by giving him a son to sit on his throne this very day.
καὶ νῦν, Κύριε ὁ θεός μου, σὺ ἔδωκας τὸν δοῦλόν σου ἀντὶ Δαυεὶδ τοῦ πατρός μου· καὶ ἐγώ εἰμι παιδάριον μικρόν, καὶ οὐκ οἶδα τὴν ἔξοδόν μου καὶ τὴν εἴσοδόν μου.
And now, O LORD my God, You have made Your servant king in my father David’s place. But I am only a little child, not knowing how to go out or come in.
ὁ δὲ δοῦλός σου ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ λαοῦ σου, ὅν ἐξελέξω λαὸν πολὺν ὃς οὐκ ἀριθμηθήσεται.
Your servant is here among the people You have chosen, a people too numerous to count or number.
καὶ δώσεις τῷ δούλῳ σου καρδίαν ἀκούειν καὶ διακρίνειν τὸν λαόν σου ἐν δικαιοςύνῃ, καὶ τοῦ συνειῖν ἀνὰ μέσον ἀγαθοῦ καὶ κακοῦ· ὅτι τίς δυνήσεται κρίνειν τὸν λαόν σου τὸν βαρὺν τοῦτον;
Therefore give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people and to discern between good and evil. For who is able to govern this great people of Yours?”
καὶ ἥρεσεν ἐνωπιον Κυρίου ὅτι ᾐτήσατο Σαλωμὼν βαρὺν τοῦτο.
Now it pleased the Lord (note: Hebrew Adonai; also in verse 15) that Solomon had made this request.
καὶ εἶπεν Κύριος πρὸς αὐτόν Ἀνθ’ ὧν ᾐτήσω παρ’ ἐμοῦ τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο, καὶ οὐκ ᾐτήσω σαυτῷ ἡμέρας πολλὰς καὶ οὐκ ᾐτήσω πλοῦτον οὐδὲ ᾐτήσω ψυχὰς ἐχθρῶν σου, ἀλλ’ ᾐτήσω σαυτῷ τοῦ συνιεῖν τοῦ εἰσακούειν κρίμα·
So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this instead of requesting long life or wealth for yourself or death for your enemies—but you have asked for discernment to administer justice—
ἰδοὺ πεποίηκα τό ῥῆμά σου· ἰδοὺ δέδωκά σοι καρδίαν φρονίμην καὶ σοφήν· ὡς ςὺ οὐ γέγονεν ἔμπροσθέν σου, καὶ μετὰ σὲ οὐκ ἀναστήσεται ὅμοιός σοι.
behold, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been another like you, nor will there ever be.
καὶ ἃ οὐκ ᾐτήσω δέδωκά σοι, καὶ πλῦτον καὶ δόξαν, ὡς οὐ γέγονεν ἀνὴρ ὅμοιός σοι ἐν βασιλεῦσιν·
Moreover, I will give you what you did not request—both riches and honor—so that during all your days no man in any kingdom will be your equal.
καὶ ἐὰν πορευθῇς ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ μου φυλάσσειν τὰς ἐντολάς μου καὶ τὰ προστάγματά μου ὡς ἐπορεύθη Δαυεὶδ ὁ πατήρ σου, καὶ πληθυνῶ τὰς ἡμέρας σου.
So if you walk in My ways and keep My statutes and commandments, just as your father David did, I will prolong your days.”
καὶ ἐξυπνίσθη Σαλωμών, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐνύπνιον· καὶ ἀνέστη καὶ παργίνεται εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ ἔστη κατὰ πρόσωπον τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τοῦ κατὰ πρόσωπον κιβωτοῦ διαθήκης Κυρίου ἐν Σειών, καὶ ἀνήγαγεν ὁλοκαυτώσεις καὶ ἐποίησεν εἰρηνικάς, καὶ ἐποίησεν πότον μέγαν ἑαυτῷ καὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς παισὶν ἑαυτοῦ.
Then Solomon awoke, and indeed it had been a dream. So he returned to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then he held a feast for all his servants.
Τότε ὤφθησαν δύο γυναὶκες πόρναι τῷ βασιλεῖ καὶ ἔστησαν ἐνώπιον αὐτοὺ.
At that time two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him.
καὶ εἶπεν ἡ γυνὴ ἡ μία Ἐν ἐμοί, κύριε· ἐγὼ καὶ ἡ γυνὴ αἥτη οἰκοῦμεν ἐν οἴκῳ ἐνί, καὶ ἐτέκομεν ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ·
One woman said, “Please, my lord, this woman and I live in the same house, and I gave birth while she was in the house.
καὶ ἐγεηήθη ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τρίτῃ τεκούσης μου καὶ ἔτεκεν καὶ ἡ γυνὴ αἥτη· καὶ ἡμεῖς κατὰ τὸ αὐτό, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν οὐθεὶς μεθ’ ἡμῶν παρὲξ ἀμφοτέρων ἡμῶν ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ.
On the third day after I gave birth, this woman also had a baby. We were alone, with no one in the house but the two of us.
καὶ ἀπέθανεν ὁυίὸς τὴς γυναικὸς ταύτης τὴν νύκτα, ὠς ἐπεκοιμήθη ἐπ’ αὐτόν·
During the night this woman’s son died because she rolled over on him.
καὶ ἀνέστη μέσης τῆς νυκτὸς καὶ ἔλαβεν τὸν υἱόν μου ἐκ τῶν ἀγκαλῶν μου καὶ ἐκοίμισεν αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ κόλπῳ αὐτῆς, καὶ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτῆς τὸν τεθνηκότα ἐκοίμισεν ἐν τῷ κόλπῳ μου.
So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while I was asleep. She laid him in her bosom and put her dead son at my bosom.
καὶ ἀνέστην τὸ πρωὶ θηλάσαι τὸν υἱόν μου, καὶ ἐκεῖνος ἦν τεθνηκώς· καὶ ἰδοὺ κατενόησα αὐτὸν πρωί, καὶ ἰδοὺ οὐκ ἦν ὁ υἱός μου ὃν ἔτεκον.
The next morning, when I got up to nurse my son, I discovered he was dead. But when I examined him, I realized that he was not the son I had borne.”
καὶ εἶπεν ἡ γυνὴ ἠ ἐτέρα Οὐχί, ἀλλὰ ὁ υἰός μου ὁ ζῶν, ὁ δὲ υίός σου ὁ τεθνηκως· καὶ ἐλάλησαν ἐνώπιον τοῦ βασιλέως.
“No,” said the other woman, “the living one is my son and the dead one is your son.” But the first woman insisted, “No, the dead one is yours and the living one is mine.” So they argued before the king.
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς αὐταῖς Σὺ λέυεις Οὖτος ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ζῶν, καὶ ὁ υίός ταύτης ὁ τεθνηκώς· καὶ σὺ λέγεις Οὐχί, ἀλλὰ ὁ υἰός μου ὁ ζῶν, καὶ ὁ υἱός σου ὁτευνηκώς.
Then the king replied, “This woman says, ‘My son is alive and yours is dead,’ but that woman says, ‘No, your son is dead and mine is alive.’”
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεύς Λάβετε μάχαιραν· καὶ προσήνεεγκαν τὴν μάχαιραν ἐνώπιον τοῦ βασιλέως.
The king continued, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought him a sword,
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεύς Διέλετε τὸ παιδίον τὸ θηλάζον τὸ ζῶν εἰς δύο, καὶ δότε τὸ ἥμισυ αὐτοῦ ταύτῃ καὶ τὸ ἤμισυ αὐτοῦ ταύτῃ.
and the king declared, “Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other.”
καὶ ἀπεεκρίθη ἡ γυνὴ ἦς ἦν ὁ υίὸς ὁ ζῶν καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα, ὄτι ἐταράχθη ἡ μήτρα αὐτῆς ἐπὶ τῷ υἱῷ αὐτῆς, καὶ εἶπεν ἐν ἐμοί, κύριε, δότε αὐτῇ τὸ παιδιον καὶ θανάτῳ μὴ θανταώσητε αὐτόν· καὶ αὔτη εἦπεν Μήτε ἑμοὶ μήτε αὐτῇ ἔστω· διέλετε.
Then the woman whose son was alive spoke to the king because she yearned with compassion for her son. “Please, my lord,” she said, “give her the living baby. Do not kill him!” But the other woman said, “He will be neither mine nor yours. Cut him in two!”
καὶ ἀπεκρίθη ὁπεκρίθη ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ εἶπεν Δότε τὸ παιδίον τῇ εἰπούςῃ Δότε αὐτῇ αὐτὸ καὶ θανάτῳ μὴ θανταώσητε αὐτόν· αὐτὴ ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ.
Then the king gave his ruling: “Give the living baby to the first woman. By no means should you kill him; she is his mother.”
καὶ ἤκουσαν πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ τὸ κρίμα τοῦτο ὃ ἔκρινεν ὁ βασιλεύς · καὶ ἐφοβήρησαν ἀπο προσώπου τοῦ βασιλέως, ὄτι εἶδον ὄτι φρόνησις θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ τοῦ ποιεῖν δικαίωα.
When all Israel heard of the judgment the king had given, they stood in awe of him, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to administer justice.
