Καὶ ἦλθεν πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ πρὸς Δαυεὶδ ἐν Χεβρὼν λέγοντες Ἰδοὺ ὀστᾶ σου καὶ σάρκες σου ἡμεῖς·
Then all Israel came together to David at Hebron and said, “Here we are, your own flesh and blood.
καὶ ἐχθές καὶ τρίτην ὄντος Σαοὺλ βασιλέως σὺ ἦσθα ὁ ἐξάγων καὶ εἰσάγων τὸν Ἰσραήλ. καὶ εἶπεν Ἰσραήλ Κύριός σοι Σὺ ποιμανεῖς τὸν λαόν μου τὸν Ἰσραήλ, καὶ σὺ ἔσῃ εἰς ἡγούμενον ἐπὶ Ἰσραήλ.
Even in times past (note: Or For some time), while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them back. And the LORD your God said, ‘You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ruler over them.’”
καὶ ἦλθον πάντες πρεσβύτεροι Ἰσραὴλ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα εἰς Χεβρών, καὶ διέθετο αὐτοῖς ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαυεὶδ διαθήκην ἐν Χεβρὼν ἐναντίον Κυρίου, καὶ ἔχρισαν τὸν Δαυεὶδ εἰς βασιλέα ἐπὶ Ἰσραὴλ κατὰ τὸν λόγον Κυρίου διὰ χειρὸς Σαμουὴλ.
So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, where David made a covenant with them before the LORD. And they anointed him king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD through Samuel.
Καὶ ἐπορεύθη ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ ἄνδρες αὐτοῦ εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ, αὕτη Ἰεβούς, καὶ ἐκεῖ οἱ Ἰεβουσαῖοι οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὴν Ἰεβοὺς
Then David and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus), where the Jebusites inhabited the land.
εἶπαν τῷ Δαυεὶδ Οὐκ εἰσελεύσῃ ὧδε. καὶ προκατελάβετο τὴν περιοχὴν Σειών, αὕτη ἡ πόλις Δαυείδ.
The people of Jebus said to David, “You will never get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion (that is, the City of David).
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ Πᾶς τύπτων Ἰεβουσαῖον ἐν πρώτοις, καὶ ἔσται εἰς ἄρχοντα καὶ εἰς στρατηγόν· καὶ ἀνέβη ἐπʼ αὐτῇ ἐν πρώτοις Ἰωὰβ υἱὸς Σαρουιά, καὶ ἐγένετο εἰς ἄρχοντα.
Now David had said, “Whoever is the first to strike down a Jebusite will become chief commander.” And Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and he became the chief.
καὶ ἐκάθισεν Δαυεὶδ ἐν τῇ περιοχῇ· διὰ τοῦτο ἐκάλεσεν αὐτὴν Πόλιν Δαυείδ·
So David took up residence in the fortress; that is why it was called the City of David.
καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν τὴν πόλιν κύκλῳ· καὶ ἐπολέμησεν καὶ ἔλαβεν τὴν πόλιν.
He built up the city around it, from the supporting terraces (note: Hebrew the Millo) to the surrounding wall, while Joab restored the rest of the city.
καὶ ἐπορεύετο Δαυεὶδ πορευόμενος, καὶ Κύριος Παντοκράτωρ μετʼ αὐτοῦ.
And David became greater and greater, for the LORD of Hosts was with him.
καὶ οὗτοι οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν δυνατῶν οἳ ἦσαν τῷ Δαυείδ, οἱ κατισχύοντες μετʼ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ αὐτοῦ μετὰ παντὸς Ἰσραὴλ τοῦ βασιλεῦσαι αὐτὸν κατὰ τὸν λόγον Κυρίου ἐπὶ Ἰσραήλ.
Now these were the chiefs of David’s mighty men, who, together with all Israel, bolstered and strengthened his kingdom, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.
καὶ οὗτος ὁ ἀριθμὸς τῶν δυνατῶν τοῦ Δαυείδ· Ἰεσεβαδὰ υἱὸς Ἀχαμανεὶ πρῶτος τῶν τριάκοντα· οὗτος ἐσπάσατο τὴν όομφαίαν αὐτοῦ ἅπαξ ἐπὶ τριακοσίους τραυματίας ἐν καιρῷ ἑνί.
This is the list of David’s mighty men: Jashobeam son of Hachmoni was chief of the officers (note: Or of the Thirty; some LXX manuscripts of the Three; see 2 Samuel 23:8.); he wielded his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed at one time.
καὶ μετʼ αὐτὸν Ἐλεάζαρ υἱὸς Δωδαὶ ὁ Ἀρχωνεί, οὗτος ἦν ἐν τοῖς τρισὶν δυνατοῖς.
Next in command was Eleazar son of Dodo (note: Dodo is a variant of Dodai; see 1 Chronicles 27:4.) the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men.
οὗτος ἦν μετὰ Δαυεὶδ ἐν Φασοδομή, καὶ οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι συνήχθησαν ἐκεῖ εἰς πόλεμον, καὶ ἤν μερὶς τοῦ ἀγροῦ πλήρης κριθῶν, καὶ ὁ λαὸς ἔφυγεν ἀπὸ προσὤπου ἀλλοφύλων.
He was with David at Pas-dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. At a place with a field full of barley, the troops fled from the Philistines.
καὶ ἔστη ἐν μέσῳ τῆς μερίδος καὶ ἔσωσεν αὐτήν, καὶ ἐπάταξεν τοὺς ἀλλοφύλους· καὶ ἐποίησεν Κύριος σωτηρίαν μεγάλην.
But Eleazar and David stationed themselves (note: Literally But they stationed themselves) in the middle of the field and defended it. They struck down the Philistines, and the LORD brought about a great victory.
καὶ κατέβησαν τρεῖς ἐκ τῶν τριάκοντα ἀρχόντων εἰς τὴν πέτραν πρὸς Δαυεὶδ εἰς τὸ σπήλαιον Ὀδολλὰμ, καὶ παρεμβολὴ τῶν ἀλλοφύλων ἐν τῇ κοιλάδι τῶν γιγάντων.
Three of the thirty chief men went down to David, to the rock at the cave of Adullam, while a company of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.
καὶ Δαυεὶδ τότε ἐν τῇ περιοχῇ, καὶ τὸ σύστεμα τῶν ἀλλοφύλων τότε ἐν Βαιθλέεμ.
At that time David was in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was at Bethlehem.
καὶ ἐπεθύμησεν Δαυεὶδ καὶ εἶπεν Τίς ποτιεῖ με ὕδωρ ἐκ τοῦ λάκκου Βηθλέεμ τοῦ ἐν τῇ πύλη;
David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!”
καὶ διέρρηξαν οἱ τρεῖς τὴν παρεμβολὴν τῶν ἀλλοφύλων καὶ ὑδρεύσαντο ὕδωρ ἐκ τοῦ λάκκου τοῦ ἐν Βαιθλέεμ, ὅς ἦν ἐν τῇ πύλη, καὶ ἔλαβον πρὸς Δαυείδ, καὶ οὐκ ἤθελεν Δαυεὶδ τοῦ πιεῖν αὐτό· καὶ ἔσπεισεν αὐτὸ τῷ κυρίῳ
So the Three broke through the Philistine camp, drew water from the well at the gate of Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD,
καὶ εἶπεν Ἵλεώς μοι ὁ θεὸς τοῦ ποιῆσαι τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο· εἰ αἷμα ἀνδρῶν τούτων πίομαι ἐν ψυχαῖς αὐτῶν; ὅτι ἐν ψυχαῖς αὐτῶν ἤνεγκαν· καὶ οὐκ ἐβούλετο πιεῖν αὐτό. ταῦτα ἐποίησαν οἱ τρεῖς δυνατοί.
saying, “Far be it from me, my God, to do this! How can I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives?” Because they had brought it at the risk of their lives, David refused to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.
καὶ Ἀβεισὰ ἀδελφὸς Ἰωάβ, οὗτος ἦν ἄρχων τῶν τριῶν, οὖτος ἐσπάσατο τὴν ῥομφαίαν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τριακοσίους τραυματίας ἐν καιρῷ ἑνί καὶ οὗτος ἦν ὀνομαστὸς ἐν τοῖς τρισίν,
Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of the Three (note: Hebrew; Syriac the Thirty; also in verse 21), and he wielded his spear against three hundred men, killed them, and won a name along with the Three.
ἀπὸ τῶν τριῶν ὑπέρ τοὺς δύο ἔνδοξος, καὶ ἦν αὐτοῖς εἰς ἄρχοντα, καὶ ἕως τῶν τριῶν οὐκ ἤρχετο.
He was doubly honored above the Three, and he became their commander, even though he was not included among the Three.
καὶ Βαναιὰ υἱὸς Ἰωδάε υἱὸς ἀνδρὸς δυνατοῦ, πολλὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ ὑπέρ Καβασαήλ· οὗτος ἐπάταξεν τοὺς δύο ἀριὴλ Μωάβ, καὶ οὗτος κατέβη καὶ ἐπάταξεν τὸν λέοντα ἐν τῷ λάκκῳ ἐν ἡμέρᾳ χιόνος,
And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a man of valor from Kabzeel, a man of many exploits. He struck down two champions of Moab (note: Or two sons of Ariel of Moab), and on a snowy day he went down into a pit and killed a lion.
καὶ οὗτος ἐπάταξεν τὸν ἄνδρα τὸν Αἰγύπτιον, ἄνδρα ὁρατὸν πεντάπηχυν· καὶ ἐν χειρὶ τοῦ Αἰγυπτίου δόρυ ὡς ἀντίον ὑφαινόντων· καὶ κατέβη ἐπʼ αὐτὸν Βαναίας ἐν ῥάβδῳ καὶ ἀφείλατο ἐκ τῆς χειρὸς τοῦ Αἰγυπτίου τὸ δόρυ, καὶ ἀπέκτεινεν αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ δόρατι αὐτοῦ.
He also struck down an Egyptian, a huge man five cubits tall. Although the Egyptian had a spear like a weaver’s beam in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club, snatched the spear from his hand, and killed the Egyptian with his own spear.
ταῦτα ἐποίησεν Βαναίας υἱὸς Ἰωάδ, καὶ τούτῳ ὄνομα ἐν τοῖς τρισὶν τοῖς δυνατοῖς·
These were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who won a name along with the three mighty men.
ὑπέρ τοὺς τριάκοντα ἔνδοξος οὗτος, καὶ πρὸς τοὺς τρεῖς οὐκ ἤρχετο, καὶ κατέστησεν αὐτὸν Δαυεὶδ ἐπὶ τὴν πατριὰν αὐτοῦ.
He was most honored among the Thirty, but he did not become one of the Three. And David appointed him over his guard.
Καὶ δυνατοὶ τῶν δυνάμεων· Ἀσαὴλ ἀδελφὸς Ἰωάβ, Ἐλεανὰν υἱὸς Δωδῶε Βαιθλάεμ,
Now these were the mighty men: Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan son of Dodo of Bethlehem,
Σαμαὼθ ὁ Ἀδί Χέλλης ὁ Φελωνεί,
Shammoth the Harorite (note: Shammoth the Harorite is a variant of Shammah the Harodite; see 2 Samuel 23:25.), Helez the Pelonite,
Ὠραὶ υἱὸς ἐκ τῆς Ὁθεκώ, Ἀβιέζερ ὁ Ἀναθωθεἰ,
Ira son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, Abiezer the Anathothite,
Νεερὲ ὁ Νεθωφατεί, Χθάοδ υἱὸς Νοοζὰ ὁ Νετωφατεί,
Maharai the Netophathite, Heled son of Baanah the Netophathite,
Αἰρεὶ υἱὸς Ῥεβὲ ἐκ βουνοῦ Βενιαμείν, Βαναίας ὁ Φαραθωνεί,
Ithai (note: Ithai is a variant of Ittai; see 2 Samuel 23:29.) son of Ribai from Gibeah of the Benjamites, Benaiah the Pirathonite,
Οὑρεὶ ἐκ ναχαλεὶ Γάας, Ἀβιὴλ ὁ Γαραβαιθθί
Hurai (note: Hurai is a variant of Hiddai; see 2 Samuel 23:30.) from the brooks (note: Or from the ravines) of Gaash, Abiel (note: Abiel is a variant of Abi-albon; see 2 Samuel 23:31.) the Arbathite,
Ἀζβὼν ὁ Βεερμείν, Σαμαβὰ ὁ Ομεί
Azmaveth the Baharumite (note: Baharumite is a variant of Barhumite; see 2 Samuel 23:31.), Eliahba the Shaalbonite,
Βενναίας ὁ Σομολογεννουνείν, Ἰωναθὰν υἱὸς Σωλὰ ὁ Ἀραχεί,
the sons of Hashem (note: Hashem is a variant of Jashen; see LXX and 2 Samuel 23:32.) the Gizonite, Jonathan son of Shagee the Hararite,
Ἀχεὶμ υἱὸς Ἀχὰρ ὁ Ἀραρεἰ, Ελφὰτ υἱὸς Σθύρ,
Ahiam son of Sachar (note: Sachar is a variant of Sharar; see 2 Samuel 23:33.) the Hararite, Eliphal son of Ur,
Σέλη ὁ Ἀμμωνεί, Ναχὼρ ὁ Βερθεὶ αἰρων σκεύη υἱῷ Σαρουία,
Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite, the armor-bearer of Joab son of Zeruiah,
Ἀδεινὰ υἱὸς Σαιζὰ τοῦ Ῥουβὴν ἄρχων καὶ ἐπʼ αὐτῷ τριάκοντα,
Adina son of Shiza the Reubenite, chief of the Reubenites, and the thirty with him,
Ὀζειὰ ὁ Ἀσταρωθεί, Σαμαθὰ καὶ Ἰειά, υἱοὶ Κωθὰν τοῦ Ἀραρεί,
Uzzia the Ashterathite, Shama and Jeiel the sons of Hotham the Aroerite,
Ἐλθειὴλ υἱὸς Σαμερεὶ καὶ Ἰωάζαε ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ ὁ Ἰεασεί,
Jediael son of Shimri and his brother Joha the Tizite,
Λειὴλ ὁ Μιεὶ καὶ Ἰαριβεὶ καὶ Ἰωσειὰ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ, Ἐλλάαμ καὶ Ἐθεμὰ ὁ Μωαβείτης,
Eliel the Mahavite, Jeribai and Joshaviah, the sons of Elnaam, Ithmah the Moabite,
