Εἰς τὸ τέλος, ἐν ϋμνοις· συνέσεως τῷ Δαυείδ.
For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments. A Maskil (note: Maskil is probably a musical or liturgical term; used for Psalms 32, 42, 44–45, 52–55, 74, 78, 88–89, and 142.) of David. When the Ziphites went to Saul and said, “Is David not hiding among us?” Save me, O God, by Your name, and vindicate me by Your might!
Ἐνώτισαι, ὁ θεός, τὴν προσευχὴν μου, καὶ μὴ ὑπερίδῃς τὴν δέησίν μου,
55:1

πρόσχες μοι καὶ εἰσάκουσόν μου. ἐλυπήθην ἐν τῇ ἀδολεσχίᾳ μου, καὶ ἐταράχθην
55:2
Attend to me and answer me. I am restless in my complaint, and distraught
ἀπὸ φωνῆς ἐχθροῦ καὶ ἀπὸ θλίψεως ἁμαρτωλοῦ· ὅτι ἐξέκλιναν ἐπʼ ἐμέ ἀνομίαν, καὶ ἐν ἀργῇ ἐνεκότουν μοι.
55:3
at the voice of the enemy, at the pressure of the wicked. For they bring down disaster upon me and resent me in their anger.
ἡ καρδία μου ἐταράχθη ἐν ἐμοί, καὶ δειλία θανάτου ἐπέπεσεν ἐπʼ ἐμέ·
55:4
My heart pounds within me, and the terrors of death assail me.
καὶ εἶπα Τίς δώσει μοι πτέρυγας ὡσεὶ περιστερᾶς, καὶ πετασθήσομαι καὶ καταπαύσω ;
55:6
I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and find rest.
ἰδοὺ ἐμάκρυνα φυγαδεύων, καὶ ηὐλίσθην ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ. διάψαλμα.
55:7
How far away I would flee! In the wilderness I would remain. Selah
προσεδεχόμην τὸν σώζοντά με ἀπὸ ὀλιγοψυχίας καὶ
55:8
I would hurry to my shelter, far from this raging tempest.”
καταπόντισον, κύριε, καὶ καταδίελε τὰς γλώσσας αὐτῶν, ὅτι εἶδον ἀνομίαν καὶ ἀντιλογίαν ἐν τῇ πόλει.
55:9
O Lord, confuse and confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city.
ἡμέρας καὶ νυκτὸς κυκλώσει αὐτὴν ἐπὶ τὰ τείχη αὐτῆς, ἀνομία καὶ πόνος ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῆς
55:10
Day and night they encircle the walls, while malice and trouble lie within.
καὶ ἀδικία, καὶ οὐκ ἐξέλιπεν ἐκ τῶν πλατειῶν αὐτῆς κόπος καὶ δόλος.
55:11
Destruction is within; oppression and deceit never leave the streets.
ὅτι εἰ ἐχθρὸς ὠνείδισέν με, ὑπήνεγκα ἄν, καὶ εἰ ὁ μισῶν ἐπʼ ἐμὲ ἐμεγαλορημόνησεν. ἐκρύβην ἂν ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ.
55:12
For it is not an enemy who insults me; that I could endure. It is not a foe who rises against me; from him I could hide.
σὺ δέ, ἄνθρωπε ἰσόψυχε, ἡγεμών μου καὶ γνωστέ μου·
55:13
But it is you, a man like myself, my companion and close friend.
ὃς ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ἐγλύκανας ἐδέσματα, ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ θεοῦ ἐπορεύθημεν ἐν ὁμονοίᾳ.
55:14
We shared sweet fellowship together; we walked with the crowd into the house of God.
ἐλθέτω θάνατος ἐπʼ αὐτούς, καὶ καταβήτωσαν εἰς ᾅδου ζῶντες· ὅτι πονηρίαι ἐν ταῖς παροικίαις αὐτῶν ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν.
55:15
Let death seize them by surprise; let them go down to Sheol alive, for evil is with them in their homes.
ἐγὼ πρὸς τὸν θεὸν ἐκέκραξα, καὶ ὁ κύριος εἰσήκουσέν μου.
55:16
But I call to God, and the LORD saves me.
ἑσπέρας καὶ πρωὶ καὶ μεσημβρίας διηγήσομαι ἀπαγγελῶ, καὶ εἰσακούσεται τῆς φωνῆς μου.
55:17
Morning, noon, and night, I cry out in distress, and He hears my voice.
λυτρώσεται ἐν εἰρήνῃ τὴν ψυχήν μου ἀπὸ τῶν ἐγγιζόντων μοι, ὅτι ἐν πολλοῖς ἤσαν σὺν ἐμοί.
55:18
He redeems my soul in peace from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.
εἰσακούσεται ὁ θεὸς καὶ ταπεινώσει αὐτοὺς ὁ ὑπάρχων πρὸ τῶν αἰώνων. διάψαλμα. οὐ γάρ ἐστιν αὐτοῖς ἀντάλλαγμα, καὶ οὐκ ἐφοβήθησαν τὸν θεόν.
55:19
God will hear and humiliate them—the One enthroned for the ages—Selah because they do not change and they have no fear of God.
ἐξέτεινεν τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ ἀποδιδόναι· ἐβεβήλωσαν τὴν διαθήκην αὐτοῦ,
55:20
My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant.
διεμερίσθησαν ἀπὸ ὀργῆς τοῦ προσώπου αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἤγγισεν ἡ καρδία αὐτοῦ· ἡπαλύνθησαν οἱ λόγοι αὐτοῦ ὑπέρ ἔλαιον, καὶ αὐτοί εἰσιν βολίδες.
55:21
His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart. His words are softer than oil, yet they are swords unsheathed.
ἐπίριψον ἐπὶ Κύριον τὴν μέριμνάν σου, καὶ αὐτός σε διαθρέψει· οὐ δώσει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα σάλον τῷ δικαίῳ.
55:22
Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.
σὺ δέ, ὁ θεός, κατάξεις αὐτοὺς εἰς φρέαρ διαφθορᾶς· ἄνδρες αἱμάτων καὶ δολιότητος οὐ μὴ ἡμισεύσωσιν τὰς ἡμέρας αὐτῶν· ἐγὼ δὲ ἐλπιῶ ἐπὶ σέ, Κύριε.
55:23
But You, O God, will bring them down to the Pit of destruction; men of bloodshed and deceit will not live out half their days. But I will trust in You.
