Ipsi David. Judica, Domine, nocentes me ; expugna impugnantes me.
Of David, when he pretended to be insane before Abimelech (note: Abimelech is another name for Achish; see 1 Samuel 21–29 and 1 Kings 2:39.), so that the king drove him away (note: This psalm is an acrostic poem, each verse beginning with the successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet.). I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise will always be on my lips.
Apprehende arma et scutum, et exsurge in adjutorium mihi.
My soul boasts in the LORD; let the oppressed hear and rejoice.
Effunde frameam, et conclude adversus eos qui persequuntur me ; dic animæ meæ : Salus tua ego sum.
Magnify the LORD with me; let us exalt His name together.
Confundantur et revereantur quærentes animam meam ; avertantur retrorsum et confundantur cogitantes mihi mala.
I sought the LORD, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears.
Fiant tamquam pulvis ante faciem venti, et angelus Domini coarctans eos.
Those who look to Him are radiant with joy; their faces shall never be ashamed.
Fiat via illorum tenebræ et lubricum, et angelus Domini persequens eos.
This poor man called out, and the LORD heard him; He saved him from all his troubles.
Quoniam gratis absconderunt mihi interitum laquei sui ; supervacue exprobraverunt animam meam.
The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, and he delivers them.
Veniat illi laqueus quem ignorat, et captio quam abscondit apprehendat eum, et in laqueum cadat in ipsum.
Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
Anima autem mea exsultabit in Domino, et delectabitur super salutari suo.
Fear the LORD, you His saints, for those who fear Him lack nothing.
Omnia ossa mea dicent : Domine, quis similis tibi ? eripiens inopem de manu fortiorum ejus ; egenum et pauperem a diripientibus eum.
Young lions go lacking and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.
Surgentes testes iniqui, quæ ignorabam interrogabant me.
Come, children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
Retribuebant mihi mala pro bonis, sterilitatem animæ meæ.
Who is the man who delights in life, who desires to see good days?
Ego autem, cum mihi molesti essent, induebar cilicio ; humiliabam in jejunio animam meam, et oratio mea in sinu meo convertetur.
Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from deceitful speech.
Quasi proximum et quasi fratrem nostrum sic complacebam ; quasi lugens et contristatus sic humiliabar.
Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
Et adversum me lætati sunt, et convenerunt ; congregata sunt super me flagella, et ignoravi.
The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and His ears are inclined to their cry (note: LXX to their prayer).
Dissipati sunt, nec compuncti ; tentaverunt me, subsannaverunt me subsannatione ; frenduerunt super me dentibus suis.
But the face of the LORD is against those who do evil (note: Cited in 1 Peter 3:10–12), to wipe out all memory of them from the earth.
Domine, quando respicies ? Restitue animam meam a malignitate eorum ; a leonibus unicam meam.
The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears; He delivers them from all their troubles.
Confitebor tibi in ecclesia magna ; in populo gravi laudabo te.
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.
Non supergaudeant mihi qui adversantur mihi inique, qui oderunt me gratis, et annuunt oculis.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him from them all.
Quoniam mihi quidem pacifice loquebantur ; et in iracundia terræ loquentes, dolos cogitabant.
He protects all his bones; not one of them will be broken (note: Cited in John 19:36).
Et dilataverunt super me os suum ; dixerunt : Euge, euge ! viderunt oculi nostri.
Evil will slay the wicked, and the haters of the righteous will be condemned.
Vidisti, Domine : ne sileas ; Domine, ne discedas a me.
The LORD redeems His servants, and none who take refuge in Him will be condemned.
