Alleluja. Confitemini Domino, quoniam bonus, quoniam in sæculum misericordia ejus.
Hallelujah (note: Or Hallelu YAH, meaning Praise the LORD; also in verse 48)! Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His loving devotion endures forever.
Dicant qui redempti sunt a Domino, quos redemit de manu inimici, et de regionibus congregavit eos,
Who can describe the mighty acts of the LORD or fully proclaim His praise?
a solis ortu, et occasu, ab aquilone, et mari.
Blessed are those who uphold justice, who practice righteousness at all times.
Erraverunt in solitudine, in inaquoso ; viam civitatis habitaculi non invenerunt.
Remember me, O LORD, in Your favor to Your people; visit me with Your salvation,
Esurientes et sitientes, anima eorum in ipsis defecit.
that I may see the prosperity of Your chosen ones, and rejoice in the gladness of Your nation, and give glory with Your inheritance.
Et clamaverunt ad Dominum cum tribularentur, et de necessitatibus eorum eripuit eos ;
We have sinned like our fathers; we have done wrong and acted wickedly.
et deduxit eos in viam rectam, ut irent in civitatem habitationis.
Our fathers in Egypt did not grasp Your wonders or remember Your abundant kindness; but they rebelled by the sea, there at the Red Sea (note: Or the Sea of Reeds; also in verses 9 and 22).
Confiteantur Domino misericordiæ ejus, et mirabilia ejus filiis hominum.
Yet He saved them for the sake of His name, to make His power known.
Quia satiavit animam inanem, et animam esurientem satiavit bonis.
He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up; He led them through the depths as through a desert.
Sedentes in tenebris et umbra mortis ; vinctos in mendicitate et ferro.
He saved them from the hand that hated them; He redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.
Quia exacerbaverunt eloquia Dei, et consilium Altissimi irritaverunt.
The waters covered their foes; not one of them remained.
Et humiliatum est in laboribus cor eorum ; infirmati sunt, nec fuit qui adjuvaret.
Then they believed His promises and sang His praise.
Et clamaverunt ad Dominum cum tribularentur ; et de necessitatibus eorum liberavit eos.
Yet they soon forgot His works and failed to wait for His counsel.
Et eduxit eos de tenebris et umbra mortis, et vincula eorum dirupit.
They craved intensely in the wilderness and tested God in the desert.
Confiteantur Domino misericordiæ ejus, et mirabilia ejus filiis hominum.
So He granted their request, but sent a wasting disease upon them.
Quia contrivit portas æreas, et vectes ferreos confregit.
In the camp they envied Moses, as well as Aaron, the holy one of the LORD.
Suscepit eos de via iniquitatis eorum ; propter injustitias enim suas humiliati sunt.
The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan; it covered the assembly of Abiram.
Omnem escam abominata est anima eorum, et appropinquaverunt usque ad portas mortis.
Then fire blazed through their company; flames consumed the wicked.
Et clamaverunt ad Dominum cum tribularentur, et de necessitatibus eorum liberavit eos.
At Horeb (note: That is, Mount Sinai, or possibly a mountain in the range containing Mount Sinai) they made a calf and worshiped a molten image.
Misit verbum suum, et sanavit eos, et eripuit eos de interitionibus eorum.
They exchanged their Glory (note: Or their glorious God) for the image of a grass-eating ox.
Confiteantur Domino misericordiæ ejus, et mirabilia ejus filiis hominum.
They forgot God their Savior, who did great things in Egypt,
Et sacrificent sacrificium laudis, et annuntient opera ejus in exsultatione.
wondrous works in the land of Ham, and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.
Qui descendunt mare in navibus, facientes operationem in aquis multis :
So He said He would destroy them—had not Moses His chosen one stood before Him in the breach to divert His wrath from destroying them.
ipsi viderunt opera Domini, et mirabilia ejus in profundo.
They despised the pleasant land; they did not believe His promise.
Dixit, et stetit spiritus procellæ, et exaltati sunt fluctus ejus.
They grumbled in their tents and did not listen to the voice of the LORD.
Ascendunt usque ad cælos, et descendunt usque ad abyssos ; anima eorum in malis tabescebat.
So He raised His hand and swore to cast them down in the wilderness,
Turbati sunt, et moti sunt sicut ebrius, et omnis sapientia eorum devorata est.
to disperse (note: Or cast down or cause to fall) their offspring among the nations and scatter them throughout the lands.
Et clamaverunt ad Dominum cum tribularentur ; et de necessitatibus eorum eduxit eos.
They yoked themselves to Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods.
Et statuit procellam ejus in auram, et siluerunt fluctus ejus.
So they provoked the LORD to anger with their deeds, and a plague broke out among them.
Et lætati sunt quia siluerunt ; et deduxit eos in portum voluntatis eorum.
But Phinehas stood and intervened, and the plague was restrained.
Confiteantur Domino misericordiæ ejus, et mirabilia ejus filiis hominum.
It was credited to him as righteousness for endless generations to come.
Et exaltent eum in ecclesia plebis, et in cathedra seniorum laudent eum.
At the waters of Meribah (note: Meribah means quarreling; see Exodus 17:7.) they angered the LORD, and trouble came to Moses because of them.
Posuit flumina in desertum, et exitus aquarum in sitim ;
For they rebelled against His Spirit (note: Or they provoked His Spirit), and Moses spoke rashly with his lips.
terram fructiferam in salsuginem, a malitia inhabitantium in ea.
They did not destroy the peoples as the LORD had commanded them,
Posuit desertum in stagna aquarum, et terram sine aqua in exitus aquarum.
but they mingled with the nations and adopted their customs.
Et collocavit illic esurientes, et constituerunt civitatem habitationis :
They worshiped their idols, which became a snare to them.
et seminaverunt agros et plantaverunt vineas, et fecerunt fructum nativitatis.
They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons.
Et benedixit eis, et multiplicati sunt nimis ; et jumenta eorum non minoravit.
They shed innocent blood—the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was polluted with blood.
Et pauci facti sunt et vexati sunt, a tribulatione malorum et dolore.
They defiled themselves by their actions and prostituted themselves by their deeds.
Effusa est contemptio super principes : et errare fecit eos in invio, et non in via.
So the anger of the LORD burned against His people, and He abhorred His own inheritance.
Et adjuvit pauperem de inopia, et posuit sicut oves familias.
He delivered them into the hand of the nations, and those who hated them ruled over them.
Videbunt recti, et lætabuntur ; et omnis iniquitas oppilabit os suum.
Their enemies oppressed them and subdued them under their hand.
Quis sapiens, et custodiet hæc, et intelliget misericordias Domini ?
Many times He rescued them, but they were bent on rebellion and sank down in their iniquity.
