Dies sind die Worte Agurs, des Sohnes Jakes. Lehre und Rede des Mannes: Ich habe mich gemüht, o Gott; ich habe mich gemüht, o Gott, und ablassen müssen.
These are the words of Agur son of Jakeh—the burden that this man declared to Ithiel: “I am weary, O God, and worn out (note: Or declared to Ithiel: “I am weary, O God, but I can prevail. (revocalizations); Hebrew declared to Ithiel—to Ithiel and Ucal:).
Denn ich bin der allernärrischste, und Menschenverstand ist nicht bei mir;
Surely I am the most ignorant of men, and I lack the understanding of a man.
ich habe Weisheit nicht gelernt, dass ich den Heiligen erkennete.
I have not learned wisdom, and I have no knowledge of the Holy One.
Wer fährt hinauf gen Himmel und herab? Wer fasst den Wind in seine Hände? Wer bindet die Wasser in ein Kleid? Wer hat alle Enden der Welt gestellt? Wie heißt er? Und wie heißt sein Sohn? Weißt du das?
Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in His hands? Who has bound up the waters in His cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is the name of His Son—surely you know!
Alle Worte Gottes sind durchläutert; er ist ein Schild denen, die auf ihn trauen.
Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.
Tue nichts zu seinen Worten, dass er dich nicht strafe und werdest lügenhaft erfunden.
Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you and prove you a liar.
Zweierlei bitte ich von dir; das wollest du mir nicht weigern, ehe ich denn sterbe:
Two things I ask of You—do not refuse me before I die:
Abgötterei und Lüge lass ferne von mir sein; Armut und Reichtum gib mir nicht, lass mich aber mein bescheiden Teil Speise dahinnehmen.
Keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me. Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the bread that is my portion.
Ich möchte sonst, wo ich zu satt würde, verleugnen und sagen: Wer ist der HErr? Oder wo ich zu arm würde, möchte ich stehlen und mich an dem Namen meines Gottes vergreifen.
Otherwise, I may have too much and deny You, saying, ‘Who is the LORD?’ Or I may become poor and steal, profaning the name of my God.
Verleumde den Knecht nicht bei seinem Herrn, dass er dir nicht fluche und du die Schuld tragen müssest.
Do not slander a servant to his master, or he will curse you, and you will bear the guilt.
Es ist eine Art, die ihrem Vater flucht und ihre Mutter nicht segnet;
There is a generation of those who curse their fathers and do not bless their mothers.
eine Art, die sich rein dünkt, und ist doch von ihrem Kot nicht gewaschen;
There is a generation of those who are pure in their own eyes and yet unwashed of their filth.
eine Art, die ihre Augen hoch trägt und ihre Augenlider emporhält;
There is a generation—how haughty are their eyes and pretentious are their glances—
eine Art, die Schwerter für Zähne hat und Messer für Backenzähne und verzehrt die Elenden im Lande und die Armen unter den Leuten.
there is a generation whose teeth are swords and whose jaws are knives, devouring the oppressed from the earth and the needy from among men.

The leech has two daughters: Give and Give. There are three things that are never satisfied, four that never say, ‘Enough!’:

As for the eye that mocks a father and scorns obedience to a mother, may the ravens of the valley pluck it out and young vultures devour it.
Drei sind mir zu wunderbar, und das vierte verstehe ich nicht:
There are three things too wonderful for me, four that I cannot understand:
des Adlers Weg am Himmel, der Schlange Weg auf einem Felsen, des Schiffes Weg mitten im Meer und eines Mannes Weg an einer Jungfrau.
the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship at sea, and the way of a man with a maiden.
Also ist auch der Weg der Ehebrecherin; die verschlingt und wischt ihr Maul und spricht: Ich habe kein Böses getan.
This is the way of an adulteress: She eats and wipes her mouth and says, ‘I have done nothing wrong.’
Ein Land wird durch dreierlei unruhig, und das vierte kann es nicht ertragen:
Under three things the earth trembles, under four it cannot bear up:
ein Knecht, wenn er König wird; ein Narr, wenn er zu satt ist;
a servant who becomes king, a fool who is filled with food,
eine Verschmähte, wenn sie geehelicht wird; und eine Magd, wenn sie ihrer Frau Erbin wird.
an unloved woman who marries, and a maidservant who supplants her mistress.
Vier sind klein auf Erden und klüger denn die Weisen:
Four things on earth are small, yet they are exceedingly wise:
die Ameisen, ein schwaches Volk; dennoch schaffen sie im Sommer ihre Speise,
The ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer;
Kaninchen, ein schwaches Volk; dennoch legt es sein Haus in den Felsen,
the rock badgers (note: Or the coneys or the hyraxes) are creatures of little power, yet they make their homes in the rocks;
Heuschrecken, haben keinen König; dennoch ziehen sie aus ganz in Haufen,
the locusts have no king, yet they all advance in formation;
die Spinne, wirkt mit ihren Händen und ist in der Könige Schlössern.
and the lizard can be caught in one’s hands, yet it is found in the palaces of kings.
Dreierlei haben einen feinen Gang, und das vierte geht wohl:
There are three things that are stately in their stride, and four that are impressive in their walk:
der Löwe, mächtig unter den Tieren und kehrt nicht um vor jemand;
a lion, mighty among beasts, refusing to retreat before anything;
ein Windhund von guten Lenden, und ein Widder, und ein König, wider den sich niemand legen darf.
a strutting rooster; a he-goat; and a king with his army around him (note: Or a king against whom there is no rising up).
Bist du ein Narr gewesen und zu hoch gefahren und hast Böses vorgehabt, so lege die Hand aufs Maul.
If you have foolishly exalted yourself or if you have plotted evil, put your hand over your mouth.
Wenn man Milch stößt, so macht man Butter daraus; und wer die Nase hart schneuzt, zwingt Blut heraus; und wer den Zorn reizt, zwingt Hader heraus.
For as the churning of milk yields butter, and the twisting of the nose draws blood, so the stirring of anger brings forth strife.”
