1:1

Paulus und Timotheus, Knechte Jesu Christi, allen Heiligen in Christo Jesu zu Philippi samt den Bischöfen und Dienern:

Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons:

1:2

Gnade sei mit euch und Friede von Gott, unsrem Vater, und dem Herrn Jesus Christus!

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

1:3

Ich danke meinem Gott, so oft ich euer gedenke

I thank my God every time I remember you.

1:4

(welches ich allezeit tue in allem meinem Gebet für euch alle, und tue das Gebet mit Freuden),

In every prayer for all of you, I always pray with joy,

1:5

ber eure Gemeinschaft am Evangelium vom ersten Tage an bis her,

because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,

1:6

und bin desselben in guter Zuversicht, dass, der in euch angefangen hat das gute Werk, der wird's auch vollführen bis an den Tag Jesu Christi.

being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

1:7

Wie es denn mir billig ist, dass ich dermaßen von euch halte, darum dass ich euch in meinem Herzen habe in diesem meinem Gefängnis, darin ich das Evangelium verantworte und bekräftige, als die ihr alle mit mir der Gnade teilhaftig seid.

It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart. For in my chains and in my defense and confirmation of the gospel, you are all partners in grace with me.

1:8

Denn Gott ist mein Zeuge, wie mich nach euch allen verlangt von Herzensgrund in Jesu Christo.

God is my witness how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.

1:9

Und darum bete ich, dass eure Liebe je mehr und mehr reich werde in allerlei Erkenntnis und Erfahrung,

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,

1:10

dass ihr prüfen möget, was das Beste sei, auf dass ihr seid lauter und unanstößig auf den Tag Christi,

so that you may be able to test and prove what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,

1:11

erfüllt mit Früchten der Gerechtigkeit, die durch Jesum Christum geschehen in euch zur Ehre und Lobe Gottes.

filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

1:12

Ich lasse euch aber wissen, liebe Brüder, dass, wie es um mich steht, das ist nur mehr zur Förderung des Evangeliums geraten,

Now I want you to know, brothers, that my circumstances have actually served to advance the gospel.

1:13

also dass meine Bande offenbar geworden sind in Christo in dem ganzen Richthause und bei den andern allen,

As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.

1:14

und viele Brüder in dem Herrn aus meinen Banden Zuversicht gewonnen haben und desto kühner geworden sind, das Wort zu reden ohne Scheu.

And most of the brothers, confident in the Lord by my chains, now dare more greatly to speak the without fear.

1:15

Etliche zwar predigen Christum um des Neides und Haders willen, etliche aber aus guter Meinung.

It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill.

1:16

Jene verkündigen Christum aus Zank und nicht lauter; denn sie meinen, sie wollen eine Trübsal zuwenden meinen Banden;

The latter do so in love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the .

1:17

diese aber aus Liebe; denn sie wissen, dass ich zur Verantwortung des Evangeliums hier liege.

The former, however, preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can add to the distress of my chains.

1:18

Was tut's aber? dass nur Christus verkündigt werde allerleiweise, es geschehe zum Vorwand oder in Wahrheit, so freue ich mich doch darin und will mich auch freuen.

What then is the issue? Just this: that in every way, whether by false motives or true, Christ is preached. And in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,

1:19

Denn ich weiß, dass mir dies gelingt zur Seligkeit durch euer Gebet und durch Handreichung des Geistes Jesu Christi,

because I know that through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, my distress will turn out for my deliverance.

1:20

wie ich sehnlich warte und hoffe, dass ich in keinerlei Stück zu Schanden werde, sondern dass mit aller Freudigkeit, gleichwie sonst allezeit also auch jetzt, Christus hoch gepriesen werde an meinem Leibe, es sei durch Leben oder durch Tod.

I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have complete boldness so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.

1:21

Denn Christus ist mein Leben, und Sterben ist mein Gewinn.

For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

1:22

Sintemal aber im Fleisch leben dient, mehr Frucht zu schaffen, so weiß ich nicht, welches ich erwählen soll.

But if I go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. So what shall I choose? I do not know.

1:23

Denn es liegt mir beides hart an: ich habe Lust, abzuscheiden und bei Christo zu sein, was auch viel besser wäre;

I am torn between the two. I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better indeed.

1:24

aber es ist nötiger, im Fleisch bleiben um euretwillen.

But it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.

1:25

Und in guter Zuversicht weiß ich, dass ich bleiben und bei euch allen sein werde, euch zur Förderung und Freude des Glaubens,

Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,

1:26

auf dass ihr euch sehr rühmen möget in Christo Jesu an mir, wenn ich wieder zu euch komme.

so that through my coming to you again your exultation in Christ Jesus will resound on account of me.

1:27

Wandelt nur würdig dem Evangelium Christi, auf dass, ob ich komme und sehe euch oder abwesend von euch höre, ihr steht in einem Geist und einer Seele und samt uns kämpfet für den Glauben des Evangeliums

Nevertheless, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending together as one for the faith of the gospel,

1:28

und euch in keinem Weg erschrecken lasset von den Widersachern, welches ist ein Anzeichen, ihnen der Verdammnis, euch aber der Seligkeit, und das von Gott.

without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a clear sign of their destruction but of your salvation, and it is from God.

1:29

Denn euch ist gegeben, um Christi willen zu tun, dass ihr nicht allein an ihn glaubet sondern auch um seinetwillen leidet;

For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for Him,

1:30

und habet denselben Kampf, welchen ihr an mir gesehen habt und nun von mir höret.

since you are encountering the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
