Paul, prisonnier du Christ Jésus et Timothée, notre frère, à Philémon notre très cher ami et collaborateur,

Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our beloved fellow worker,

1:2

à Appia, notre sœur, à Archippe, notre compagnon d'armes, et à l'Eglise qui est dans ta maison :

to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church that meets at house:

1:3

à vous grâce et paix de la part de Dieu notre Père et du Seigneur Jésus-Christ !

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

1:4

Me souvenant sans cesse de toi dans mes prières je rends grâces à mon Dieu ;

I always thank my God, remembering you in my prayers,

1:5

car j'apprends quelles sont ta charité et ta foi à l'égard du Seigneur Jésus et envers tous les saints.

because I hear about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints.

1:6

Puisse la générosité inspirée par ta foi devenir efficace et se faire connaître par tout le bien accompli parmi nous en vue du Christ.

I pray that your partnership in the faith may become effective as you fully acknowledge every good thing that is ours in Christ.

1:7

En effet, ta charité m'a comblé de joie et de consolation, parce que les cœurs des saints ont été ranimés par toi, frère.

I take great joy and encouragement in your love, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints.

1:8

Voilà pourquoi, bien que j'ai dans le Christ toute liberté de te prescrire ce qu'il convient de faire,

So although in Christ I am bold enough to order you to do what is proper,

j'aime mieux, au nom de cette charité, t'en supplier. Tel que je suis, moi, Paul, vieux, et de plus actuellement prisonnier pour Jésus-Christ,

I prefer to appeal on the basis of love. For I, Paul, am now aged, and a prisoner of Christ Jesus as well.

1:10

je te supplie donc pour mon fils, que j'ai engendré dans les fers, pour Onésime,

I appeal to you for my child , whose father I became while I was in chains.

1:11

qui autrefois ne t'a guère été utile, mais qui maintenant l'est vraiment, et à toi et à moi.

Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.

1:12

Je te le renvoie, lui, mon propre cœur.

I am sending back to you him who is my very heart.

1:13

Je l'aurais volontiers retenu près de moi, afin qu'il me servit à ta place dans les chaînes que je porte pour l'Evangile.

I would have liked to keep him with me, so that on your behalf he could minister to me in my chains for the gospel.

1:14

Mais je n'ai voulu rien faire sans ton assentiment, pour que ton bienfait ne paraisse pas forcé, mais qu'il vienne de ton plein gré.

But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that your goodness will not be out of compulsion, but by your own free will.

1:15

Peut-être aussi Onésime n'a-t-il été séparé de toi pour un temps, qu'afin que tu le recouvres à jamais,

For perhaps this is why he was separated from you for a while, so that you might have him back for good—

1:16

non plus comme un esclave, mais bien mieux qu'un esclave, comme un frère bien-aimé, tout particulièrement aimé de moi, et combien plus de toi, aussi bien selon la chair que selon le Seigneur ?

no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a beloved brother. He is especially beloved to me, but even more so to you, both in person and in the Lord.

1:17

Si donc tu me tiens pour étroitement uni à toi, accueille-le comme moi-même.

So if you consider me a partner, receive him as you would receive me.

1:18

Et s'il t'a fait tort, s'il te doit quelque chose, passe-le à mon compte.

But if he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge it to my account.

1:19

C'est moi Paul, qui écris ceci de ma propre main ; moi je te le rendrai, pour ne pas te dire que tu es mon débiteur, et même de ta propre personne.

I, Paul, write this with my own hand. I will repay it—not to mention that you owe me your very self.

1:20

Oui, frère, que j'obtienne de toi cette satisfaction dans le Seigneur ; réjouis mes entrailles dans le Christ.

Yes, brother, from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ.

1:21

Je t'écris ceci plein de confiance en ta docilité, sachant que tu feras même au delà de ce que je demande.

Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I ask.

1:22

En même temps, prépare aussi pour moi l'hospitalité ; car j'espère vous être rendu, grâce à vos prières.

In the meantime, prepare a guest room for me, because I hope that through your prayers I will be restored to you.

1:23

Epaphras, mon compagnon de captivité en Jésus-Christ, te salue,

Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends you greetings,
