ἐγένετο μετὰ τὴν πληγὴν (1) καὶ και ελάλησεν Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν καὶ πρὸς ᾿Ελεαζὰρ τὸν ἱερέα λέγων
After the plague had ended, the LORD said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron the priest,
Λάβε τὴν ἀρχὴν πάσης συναγωγῆς υιῶν ᾿Ισραὴλ ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω κατ’ οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν, πᾶς ὁ ἐκπορευόμενος παρατάξασθαι ἐν ᾿Ισραήλ.
“Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by the houses of their fathers—all those twenty years of age or older who can serve in the army of Israel.”
καὶ ἐλάλησεν Μωυσῆς καὶ ᾿Ελεαζὰρ ὁ ἱερεὺς ἐν ἀραβὼθ Μωὰβ ἐπὶ τοῦ ᾿Ιορδάνου κατὰ ᾿Ιερειχὼ λέγων
So on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest issued the instruction,
᾿Απὸ' εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω, ὅν τρόπον συνέταξεν κύριος τῷ Μωυσῇ, σὺ καὶ ὁ υἱοὶ ᾿Ισραὴλ οἱ ἐξελθόντες ἐξ Αἰγύπτου.
“Take a census of the men twenty years of age or older (note: Take a census of the men is implied but not included in the Hebrew; see verse 2.), as the LORD has commanded Moses.” And these were the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt:
῾Ρουβὴν πρωτότοκος ᾿Ισραήλ. υἱοὶ δὲ ῾Ρουβήν· ῾Ενώχ, καὶ δῆμος τοῦ ῾Ενώχ· τῷ Φαλλοῦ, δῆμος τοῦ Φαλλουεί.
Reuben was the firstborn of Israel. These were the descendants of Reuben: The Hanochite clan from Hanoch, the Palluite clan from Pallu,
τῷ ῾Ασρών, δῆμος τοῦ ῾Ασρωνεί. τῷ Χαρμεί, δῆμος τοῦ Χαρμεί.
the Hezronite clan from Hezron, and the Carmite clan from Carmi.
οὗτοι δῆμοι ῾Ρουβήν· καὶ ἐγένετο ἢ ἐπίσκεψις αὐτῶν τρεῖς καὶ τεσσεράκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ ἑπτακόσιοι καὶ τριάκοντα.
These were the clans of Reuben, and their registration numbered 43,730.
καὶ υἱοὶ ᾿Ελιάβ· Ναμουὴλ καὶ Δαθὰν καὶ ᾿Αβειρών· οὗτοι ἐπίκλητοι τῆς συναγωγῆς, οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ ἐπισυστάντες ἐπὶ Μωυσῆν καὶ ᾿Ααρὼν ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ κόρε ἐν τῇ ἐπισυστάσει κυρίου·
and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. It was Dathan and Abiram, chosen by the congregation, who rebelled against Moses and Aaron with the followers of Korah who rebelled against the LORD.
καὶ ἀνοίξασα ἡ γῆ τὸ στόμα αὐτῆς κατέπιεν αὐτοὺς καὶ κόρε ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ αὐτοῦ, ὅτε κατέφαγεν τὸ πῦρ τοὺς πεντήκοντα καὶ διακοσίους, καὶ ἐγενήθησαν ἐν σημείῳ.
And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire consumed 250 men. They serve as a warning sign.
Καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ Συμεών· ὁ δῆμος τῶν υἱῶν Ναμουήλ, δῆμος ὁ Ναμουηλεί· τῷ ᾿Ιαμείν, δῆμος ὁ ᾿Ιαμινεί. τῷ δῆμος ὁ ᾿Ιαχινεί·
These were the descendants of Simeon by their clans: The Nemuelite clan from Nemuel (note: Nemuel is another name for Jemuel; see Genesis 46:10.), the Jaminite clan from Jamin, the Jachinite clan from Jachin,
τῷ Ζάρα, δῆμος ὁ Ζαραεί· τῷ Σαούλ, δῆμος ὁ Σαουλεί.
the Zerahite clan from Zerah (note: Zerah is a variant of Zohar; see Genesis 46:10 and Exodus 6:15.), and the Shaulite clan from Shaul.
οὗτοι δῆμοι Συμεὼν ἐκ τῆς ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν, δύο καὶ εἴκοσι χιλιάδεσ καὶ διακόσιοι.
These were the clans of Simeon, and there were 22,200 men.
Υἱοὶ δὲ Ἰούδα· Ἤρ καὶ Αὐνάν· κοὶ ἁ Ἤρ καὶ Αὐνὰν ἐν γῇ Χανάαν.
These were the descendants of Gad by their clans: The Zephonite clan from Zephon, the Haggite clan from Haggi, the Shunite clan from Shuni,
ἐγένοντο δὲ οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰούδα κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν· τῷ Σηλών, δῆμος ὁ Σηλωνεί. τῷ Φάρες, δῆμος ὁ Φάρες· τῷ Σάρα, δῆμος ὁ Ζαραεί.
the Oznite clan from Ozni, the Erite clan from Eri,
καὶ ἐγένετο υἱοὶ Φάρες· τῷ ῾Ασρών, δῆμος ὁ ῾Ασρωνεί. τῷ ᾿Ιαμούν, δῆμος ὁ ᾿Ιαμουνεί.
the Arodite clan from Arod (note: SP and Syriac Arodi; see Genesis 46:16.), and the Arelite clan from Areli.
οὗτοι δῆμοι τῷ Ἰούδᾳ κατὰ τὴν ἐπισκοπὴν αὐτῶν, ἕξ καὶ ἑβδομήκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ πεντακόσιοι.
These were the clans of Gad, and their registration numbered 40,500.
Καὶ υἱοὶ ᾿Ισσαχὰρ κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν· τῷ Θωλά, δῆμος ὁ Θωλαεί· τῷ Φουά, δῆμος ὁ Φουαεί.
The sons of Judah were Er and Onan, but they died in the land of Canaan.
τῷ ᾿Ιασούβ, δῆμος ᾿Ιασουβεί· τῷ Σαμαβάμ, δῆμος ὁ Σαμαβρανεί.
These were the descendants of Judah by their clans: The Shelanite clan from Shelah, the Perezite clan from Perez, and the Zerahite clan from Zerah.
οὗτοι δῆμοι αὐτῶν, τέσσαρες καὶ ἐξῆκον καὶ τριακόσιοι.
And these were the descendants of Perez: the Hezronite clan from Hezron and the Hamulite clan from Hamul.
Υἱοὶ Ζαβουλὼν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν· τῷ αρεδεί. τῷ ᾿Αλλών, δῆμος ὁ ᾿Αλλωνεί· τῷ ᾿Αλλήλ, Σάρεδ, δῆμος ὁ Σ δῆμος ᾿Αλληλεί.
These were the clans of Judah, and their registration numbered 76,500.
οὗτοι δῆμοι Ζαβουλὼν ἐξ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν, ἑξήκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ πεντακόσιοι.
These were the descendants of Issachar by their clans: The Tolaite clan from Tola, the Punite clan from Puvah (note: SP, LXX, Vulgate, and Syriac the Puite clan from Puah; see 1 Chronicles 7:1.),
Υἱοὶ Γὰδ κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν· τῷ Σαφῶν, δῆμος ὁ Σαφωνεί· τῷ ῾Αγγεί, δῆμος ὁ ῾Αγγεί· τῶ Σουνεί, δῆμος ὁ Σουνεί·
the Jashubite clan from Jashub (note: Jashub is a variant of Job; see Genesis 46:13.), and the Shimronite clan from Shimron.
τῷ ᾿Αζενεί, δῆμος ὁ ᾿Αζεβεί· τῷ ᾿Αδδεί, δῆμος ὁ ᾿Αδδεί·
These were the clans of Issachar, and their registration numbered 64,300.
τῷ ᾿Αροδεί, δῆμος ὁ ᾿Αροδεί· τῷ ᾿Αριήλ, δῆμος ὁ ᾿Αριηλεί.
These were the descendants of Zebulun by their clans: The Seredite clan from Sered, the Elonite clan from Elon, and the Jahleelite clan from Jahleel.
οὗτοι δῆμοι υἱῶν Γὰδ ἐξ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν, τέσσαρες καὶ τεσσεράκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ πεντακόσιοι.
These were the clans of Zebulun, and their registration numbered 60,500.
Υἱοὶ ᾿Ασὴρ κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν· τῷ ᾿Ιαμείν, δῆμος ὁ ᾿Ιαμεινεί· τῷ ᾿Ιεσού, δῆμος ὁ ᾿Ιεσουεί· τῷ Βαριά, δῆμος ὁ Βαριαεί·
The descendants of Joseph included the clans of Manasseh and Ephraim.
τῷ Χόβερ, δῆμος ὁ τῶ Μελλιήλ, δῆμος ὁ Μελλιηλεί.
These were the descendants of Manasseh: The Machirite clan from Machir, the father of Gilead, and the Gileadite clan from Gilead.
καὶ τὸ ὄνομα θυγαΚάρα.
These were the descendants of Gilead: the Iezerite clan from Iezer (note: Iezer is a variant of Abiezer; see Joshua 17:2.), the Helekite clan from Helek,
οὗτοι δῆμοι ᾿Ασὴρ ἐξ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν, εσσεράκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ χ΄.
the Asrielite clan from Asriel, the Shechemite clan from Shechem,
Υἱοὶ ᾿Ιωσὴφ κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν· Μανασσὴ καὶ ᾿Εφράιμ.
the Shemidaite clan from Shemida, and the Hepherite clan from Hepher.
υἱοὶ Μανασσή· τῷ Μαχείρ, δῆμος ὁ Μαχειρί· καὶ Μαχεὶρ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Γαλαάδ· τῷ Γαλαάδ, δῆμος ὁ Γαλαασεί.
Now Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons but only daughters. The names of his daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
καὶ οὗτοι υἱοὶ Γαλαάδ. ᾿Αχιέζερ, δῆμος ὁ ᾿Αχιεζειρεί· τῷ Χέλεγ, δῆμος ὁ Χελεγεί.
These were the clans of Manasseh, and their registration numbered 52,700.
τῷ ᾿Εσριήλ, ὁ ᾿Εσριηλεί. τῷ Σύχειμ, δῆμος ὁ Συχεμεεί·
These were the descendants of Ephraim by their clans: The Shuthelahite clan from Shuthelah, the Becherite clan from Becher, and the Tahanite clan from Tahan.
τῷ Συμαέρ, ὁ Συμαερεί· καὶ Ὅφερ, δῆμος ὁ ῾Οφερεί.
And the descendants of Shuthelah were the Eranite clan from Eran.
καὶ τῷ Σαλπαὰδ υἱῷ Ὅφερ οὐκ ἐγένοντο αὐτῷ υἱοί, ἀλλ’ ἢ θυγατέρες· καὶ ταῦτα τὰ ὀνόματα τῶν θυγατέρων Σαλπαἀδ· Μάλα καὶ Νουὰ καὶ ῾Εγλὰ καὶ Μελχὰ καὶ Θερσά.
These were the clans of Ephraim, and their registration numbered 32,500. These clans were the descendants of Joseph.
οὗτοι δῆμοι Μανασσὴ ἐξ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν, δύο καὶ πεντήκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ ἑπτακόσιοι.
These were the descendants of Benjamin by their clans: The Belaite clan from Bela, the Ashbelite clan from Ashbel, the Ahiramite clan from Ahiram,
καὶ οὗτοι υἱοὶ Ἐφράιμ· τῷ Σουτάλα, δῆμος ὁ Σουταλαεί· τῷ Τάναχ, δῆμος ὁ Ταναχεί.
the Shuphamite clan from Shupham (note: A few MT manuscripts, SP, Vulgate, and Syriac (see also LXX); most MT manuscripts Shephupham), and the Huphamite clan from Hupham.
οὗτοι υἱοὶ Σουτάλα· τῷ ᾿Εδέν, δῆμος ὁ Ἐδενεί.
And the descendants of Bela from Ard and Naaman were the Ardite clan from Ard and the Naamite clan from Naaman.
οὗτοι δῆμοι ᾿Εφράιμ ἐξ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν, δύο καὶ τριάκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ πεντακόσιοι· οὗτοι δῆμοι υἱῶν ᾿Ιωσὴφ κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν.
These were the clans of Benjamin, and their registration numbered 45,600.
Υἱοὶ Βενιαμεὶν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν· τῷ βάλε, δῆμος ὁ βαλέει· τῷ ᾿Ασυβήρ, δῆμος ὁ ᾿Ασυβηρεί· τῷ ᾿Ιαχειράν, δῆμος ὁ ᾿Ιαχειρανεί·
These were the descendants of Dan by their clans: The Shuhamite clan from Shuham. These were the clans of Dan.
τῷ Σωφάν, δῆμος ὁ Σωφανεί.
All of them were Shuhamite clans, and their registration numbered 64,400.
καὶ ἐγένοντο οἱ υἱοὶ βάλε ᾿Αδὰρ καὶ Νοεμανεί.
These were the descendants of Asher by their clans: The Imnite clan from Imnah, the Ishvite clan from Ishvi, and the Beriite clan from Beriah.
οὗτοι υἱοὶ κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν ἐξ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν, πέντε καὶ τριάκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ πεντακόσιοι.
And these were the descendants of Beriah: the Heberite clan from Heber and the Malchielite clan from Malchiel.
Καὶ υἱοὶ Δὰν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν· τῷ Σαμεί, δῆμος ὁ Σαμεί· οὗτοι δῆμοι Δὰν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν.
And the name of Asher’s daughter was Serah.
πάντες οἱ δῆμοι Σαμεὶ κατ’ ἐπισκοπὴν αὐτῶν τέσσαρες καὶ ἑξήκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ χ΄.
These were the clans of Asher, and their registration numbered 53,400.
Υἱοὶ Νεφθαλὲ κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν· τῷ Σαήλ, δῆμος ὁ Σαηλεί. τῷ Γαυνεί, δῆμος ὁ Γαυνεί·
These were the descendants of Naphtali by their clans: The Jahzeelite clan from Jahzeel, the Gunite clan from Guni,
τῷ ᾿Ιέσερ, δῆμος ὁ ᾿Ιεσερεί· τῷ Σελλή, δῆμος ὁ Σελλημεί.
the Jezerite clan from Jezer, and the Shillemite clan from Shillem.
οὗτοι δῆμοι Νεφθαεὶ ἐξ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν, τριάκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ τριακόσιοι.
These were the clans of Naphtali, and their registration numbered 45,400.
Αὕτη ἡ ἐπίσκεψις υἱῶν ᾿Ισραήλ, ἑξακόσιαι χιλιάδες καὶ χίλιοι καὶ ἑπτακόσιοι τριάκοντα.
These men of Israel numbered 601,730 in all.
Τούτοις μερισθήσεται ἡ γῆ, κληρονομεῖν ἐξ ἀριθμοῦ ὀνομάτων·
“The land is to be divided among the tribes as an inheritance, according to the number of names.
τοῖς πλείοσιν πλεονάσεις τὴν κληρονομίαν, νομίαν, καὶ τοῖς ἐλάττοσιν ἐλαττώσεις τὴν κληρονομίαν αὐτῶν· ἑκάστῳ καθὼς ἐπεσκέπησαν δοθήσεται ἡ κληρονομία αὐτῶν.
Increase the inheritance for a large tribe and decrease it for a small one; each tribe is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those registered.
διὰ μερισθήσεται ἢ γῆ τοῖς ὀνόμασιν, κατὰ φυλὰς πατριῶν αὐτῶν κληρονομήσουσιν·
Indeed, the land must be divided by lot; they shall receive their inheritance according to the names of the tribes of their fathers.
ἐκ τοῦ κλήρου μεριεῖς τὴν κληρονομίαν αὐτῶν ἀνὰ μέσον πολλῶν καὶ ὀλίγων.
Each inheritance is to be divided by lot among the larger and smaller tribes.”
Καὶ υἱοὶ Λευεὶ κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν· τῷ Γεδσών, δῆμος ὁ Γεδσωνεί· τῷ Καάθ, δῆμος ὁ Κααθεί· τῷ Μεραρεί, δῆμος ὁ Μεραρεί.
Now these were the Levites numbered by their clans: The Gershonite clan from Gershon, the Kohathite clan from Kohath, and the Merarite clan from Merari.
οὗτοι δῆμοι υἱῶν Λευεί· δῆμος ὁ Λοβενεί, δῆμος ὁ Χεβρωνεί, δῆμος ὁ κόρε καὶ δῆμος ὁ Μουσεί. καὶ Καὰθ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἀμράμ·
These were the families of the Levites: The Libnite clan, the Hebronite clan, the Mahlite clan, the Mushite clan, and the Korahite clan. Now Kohath was the father of Amram,
καὶ τὸ ὄνομα τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ ᾿Ιωχάβεδ, θυγάτηρ Λευεί, ἢ ἔτεκεν τούτους τῷ Λευεὶ ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ· καὶ ἔτεκεν τῷ ᾿Αμρὰμ τὸν ᾿Ααρὼν καὶ Μωυσῆν καὶ Μαριὰμ τὴν ἀδελφὴν αὐτῶν.
and Amram’s wife was named Jochebed. She was also a daughter of Levi, born to Levi in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam.
καὶ ἐγενήθησαν τῷ Ἀαρὼν ὅ τε Ναδὰβ καὶ ᾿Αβιοὺδ καὶ ᾿Ελεαζὰρ καὶ ᾿Ιθαμάρ.
Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar were born to Aaron,
καὶ ἀπέθανεν Ναδὰβ καὶ ᾿Αβιοὺδ ἐν τῷ προσφέρειν αὐτοὺς πῦρ ἀλλότριον ἔναντι κυρίου ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ Σεινά.
but Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized (note: Or strange) fire before the LORD.
καὶ ἐγενήθησαν ἐξ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν τρεῖς καὶ εἴκοσι χιλιάδες, πᾶν ἀρσενικὸν ἀπὸ μηνιαίου καὶ ἐπάνω· οὐ γὰρ συνεπεσκέπησαν ἐν μέσῳ υἱῶν ᾿Ισραήλ, ὅτι οὐ δίδοται αὐτοῖς κλῆρος ἐν μέσῳ υἱῶν ᾿Ισραήλ.
The registration of the Levites totaled 23,000, every male a month old or more; they were not numbered among the other Israelites, because no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites.
Καὶ αὕτη ἡ ἐπίσκεψις Μωυσῆ καὶ ᾿Ελεαζὰρ τοῦ ἱερέως, οἳ ἐπεσκέψαντο τοὺς υἱοὺς ᾿Ισραὴλ ἐν ἀραβὼθ Μωὰβ ἐπὶ τοῦ ᾿Ιορδάνου κατὰ ᾿Ιερειχώ·
These were the ones numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho.
καὶ ἐν τούτοις οὐκ ἦν ἄνθρωπος τῶν ἔπε’ ἐπεσκεμμένων ὑπὸ Μωυσῆ καὶ ᾿Ααρών, οὓς ἐπεσκέψαντο τοὺς υἱοὺς ᾿Ισραὴλ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ Σεινά·
Among all these, however, there was not one who had been numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Wilderness of Sinai.
ὅτι εἶπεν κύριος αὐτῷ Θανάτῳ ἀποθανοῦνται ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ· καὶ οὐ κατελείφθη ἐξ αὐτῶν οὐδὲ εἷς, πλὴν Χαλὲβ υἱὸς ᾿Ιεφοννὴ καὶ Ιησοῦς ὁ τοῦ Ναυή.
For the LORD had told them that they would surely die in the wilderness. Not one was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
