Und da Saneballat, Tobia und Gesem, der Araber, und unsre Feinde erfuhren, dass ich die Mauer gebaut hatte und keine Lücke mehr daran wäre, wiewohl ich die Türen zu der Zeit noch nicht eingehängt hatte in den Toren,
When Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left—though to that time I had not yet installed the doors in the gates—
sandte Sanaballat und Gesem zu mir und ließen mir sagen: Komm und lass uns zusammenkommen in den Dörfern in der Fläche Ono! Sie gedachten mir aber Böses zu tun.
Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of the villages on the plain (note: Or in the valley) of Ono.” But they were planning to harm me.
Ich aber sandte Boten zu ihnen und ließ ihnen sagen: Ich habe ein großes Geschäft auszurichten, ich kann nicht hinabkommen; es möchte das Werk nachbleiben, wo ich die Hände abtäte und zu euch hinabzöge.
So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it to go down to you?”
Sie sandten aber viermal zu mir auf diese Weise, und ich antwortete ihnen auf diese Weise.
Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave the same reply.
Da sandte Saneballat zum fünftenmal zu mir seinen Diener mit einem offenen Brief in seiner Hand.
The fifth time, Sanballat sent me this same message by his young servant, who had in his hand an unsealed letter
Darin war geschrieben: Es ist vor die Heiden gekommen, und Gesem hat's gesagt, dass du und die Juden gedenkt abzufallen, darum du die Mauer baust, und wollest also König werden;
that read: “It is reported among the nations—and Geshem (note: Hebrew Gashmu, a variant of Geshem; see verse 1.) agrees—that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and this is why you are building the wall. According to these reports, you are to become their king,
und du habest die Propheten bestellt, die von dir ausrufen sollen zu Jerusalem und sagen: Er ist der König Judas. Nun, solches wird vor den König kommen. So komm nun und lass uns miteinander ratschlagen!
and you have even appointed prophets in Jerusalem to proclaim on your behalf: ‘There is a king in Judah.’ Soon these rumors will reach the ears of the king. So come, let us confer together.”
Ich aber sandte zu ihm und ließ ihm sagen: Solches ist nicht geschehen, was du sagst; du hast es aus deinem Herzen erdacht.
Then I sent him this reply: “There is nothing to these rumors you are spreading; you are inventing them in your own mind.”
Denn sie alle wollen uns furchtsam machen und gedachten: Sie sollen die Hand abtun vom Geschäft, dass es nicht fertig werde, aber nun stärke meine Hände!
For they were all trying to frighten us, saying, “Their hands will be weakened in the work, and it will never be finished.” But now, my God (note: Hebrew But now; for clarity, my God has been included.), strengthen my hands.
Und ich kam in das Haus Semajas, des Sohnes Delajas, des Sohnes Mehetabeels; und er hatte sich verschlossen und sprach: Lass uns zusammenkommen im Hause Gottes mitten im Tempel und die Türen zuschließen; denn sie werden kommen, dich zu erwürgen, und werden bei der Nacht kommen, dass sie dich erwürgen.
Later, I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was confined to his house. He said: “Let us meet at the house of God inside the temple. Let us shut the temple doors because they are coming to kill you—by night they are coming to kill you!”
Ich aber sprach: Sollte ein solcher Mann fliehen? Sollte ein solcher Mann, wie ich bin, in den Tempel gehen, dass er lebendig bleibe? Ich will nicht hineingehen.
But I replied, “Should a man like me run away? Should one like me go into the temple to save his own life? I will not go!”
Denn ich merkte, dass ihn Gott nicht gesandt hatte. Denn er sagte wohl Weissagung auf mich; aber Tobia und Saneballat hatten ihm Geld gegeben.
I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had uttered this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
Darum nahm er Geld, auf dass ich mich fürchten sollte und also tun und sündigen, dass sie ein böses Gerücht hätten, damit sie mich lästern möchten.
He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would sin by doing as he suggested, so they could give me a bad name in order to discredit me.
Gedenke, mein Gott, des Tobia und Saneballat nach diesen Werken, auch der Prophetin Noadja und der anderen Propheten, die mich wollten abschrecken!
O my God, remember Tobiah and Sanballat for what they have done, and also Noadiah the prophetess and the other prophets who tried to intimidate me.
Und die Mauer ward fertig am fünfundzwanzigsten Tage des Monats Elul in zweiundfünfzig Tagen.
So the wall was completed in fifty-two days, on the twenty-fifth of Elul (note: Elul is the sixth month of the Hebrew lunar calendar, usually occurring within the months of August and September.).
Und da alle unsre Feinde das hörten, fürchteten sich alle Heiden, die um uns her waren, und der Mut entfiel ihnen; denn sie merkten, dass dies Werk von Gott war.
When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and disheartened, for they realized that this task had been accomplished by our God.
Auch waren zu derselben Zeit viele der Obersten Judas, deren Briefe gingen zu Tobia und von Tobia zu ihnen.
Also in those days, the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah’s letters kept coming to them.
Denn ihrer waren viel in Juda, die ihm geschworen waren; denn er war der Eidam Sechanjas, des Sohnes Arahs, und sein Sohn Johanan hatte die Tochter Mesullams, des Sohnes Berechjas.
For many in Judah were bound by oath to him, since he was a son-in-law of Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berechiah.
Und sie sagten Gutes von ihm vor mir und brachten meine Reden aus zu ihm. So sandte denn Tobia Briefe, mich abzuschrecken.
Moreover, these nobles kept reporting to me Tobiah’s good deeds, and they relayed my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidate me.
