ἐπορεύθη Σαμψὼν εἰς Γάζαν, καὶ εἶδεν ἐκεῖ γυναῖκα πόρνην καὶ πρὸς αὐτήν.
One day Samson went to Gaza, where he saw a prostitute and went in to spend the night with her.
καὶ ἀνηγγέλη τοῖς Γαζαίοις λέγοντες Ἥκει ὧδε. καὶ ἐκύκλωσαν καὶ ἐνήδρευσαν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ὅλην τὴν νύκτα ἐν τῇ πύλῃ τῆς πόλεως, καὶ ἐκώφευσαν ὅλην τὴν νύκτα λέγοντες Ἕως διαφαύσῃ ὁ ὄρθρος, καὶ φονεύσωμεν αὐτόν.
When the Gazites heard that Samson was there, they surrounded that place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate. They were quiet throughout the night, saying, “Let us wait until dawn; then we will kill him.”
καὶ ἐκοιμήθη Σαμψὼν ἕως μεσονυκτίου· καὶ ἀνέστη ἐν ἡμίσει τῆς νυκτός, καὶ ἐπελάβετο τῶν θυρῶν τῆς πύλης τῆς πόλεως σὺν τοῖς δυσὶ σταθμοῖς, καὶ ἀνεβάστασεν αὐτὰς σὺν τῷ μοχλῷ καὶ ἔθηκεν ἐπ’ ὤμων αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀνέβη ἐπὶ τὴν κορυφὴν τοῦ ὄρους τοῦ ἐπὶ προσώπου Χεβρών, καὶ ἔθηκεν αὐτὰ ἐκεῖ.
But Samson lay there only until midnight, when he got up, took hold of the doors of the city gate and both gateposts, and pulled them out, bar and all. Then he put them on his shoulders and took them to the top of the mountain overlooking Hebron.
Καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ τοῦτο καὶ ἠγάπησεν γυναῖκα ἐν Ἁλσωρήχ, καὶ ὄνομα αὐτῇ Δαλειδά.
Some time later, Samson fell in love with a woman in the Valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.
καὶ ἀνέβησαν πρὸς αὐτὴν οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν αλλοφύλων καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῇ Ἀπάτησον αὐτόν, καὶ ἴδε ἐν τίνι ἡ ἰσχὺς αὐτοῦ ἡ μεγάλη καὶ ἐν τίνι δυνησόμεθα αὐτῷ καὶ δήσομεν αὐτὸν τοῦ ταπεινῶσαι αὐτόν· καὶ ἡμεῖς δώσομέν σοι ἀνὴρ χιλίους καὶ ἑκατὸν ἀργυρίου.
The lords of the Philistines went to her and said, “Entice him and find out the source of his great strength and how we can overpower him to tie him up and subdue him. Then each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels of silver (note: 1,100 shekels is approximately 27.6 pounds or 12.5 kilograms of silver.).”
καὶ εἶπεν Δαλειδὰ πρὸς Σαμψών Απάγγειλον δή μοι ἐν τίνι ἡ ἰσχύς σου ἡ μεγάλη, καὶ ἐν τίνι δεθήσῃ τοῦ ταπεινωθῆναί σε.
So Delilah said to Samson, “Please tell me the source of your great strength and how you can be tied up and subdued.”
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὴν Σαμψών Ἐὰν δήσωσίν με ἐν ἑπτὰ νευρέαις ὑγραῖς μὴ διεφθαρμέναις, καὶ ἀσθενήσω καὶ ἔσομαι ὡς εἷς τῶν ἀνθρώπων.
Samson told her, “If they tie me up with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, I will become as weak as any other man.”
καὶ ἀνήνεγκαν αὐτῇ οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν ἀλλοφύλων ἑπτὰ νευρὰς ὑγρὰς μὴ διεφθαρμένας, καὶ ἔδησεν αὐτὸν ἐν αὐταῖς·
So the lords of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and she tied him up with them.
καὶ τὸ ἔνεδρον ἐκάθητο ἐν τῷ ταμείῳ, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἀλλόφυλοι ἐπὶ σέ, καὶ διέσπασεν τὰς νευρέας ὡς εἴ τις ἀποσπάσοι στρέμμα στιππύου ἐν τῷ ἀσφρανθῆναι αὐτὸ πυρός, καὶ οὐκ ἐγνώσθη ἡ ἰσχὺς αὐτοῦ.
While the men were hidden in her room, she called out, “Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he snapped the bowstrings like a strand of yarn seared by a flame. So the source of his strength remained unknown.
καὶ εἶπεν Δαλειδὰ πρὸς Σαμψών ἰδοὺ ἐπλάνησάς με καὶ ἐλάλησας πρὸς μὲ ψευδῆ· νῦν οὖν ἀνάγγειλόν μοι ἐν τίνι δεθήσῃ.
Then Delilah said to Samson, “You have mocked me and lied to me! Now please tell me how you can be tied up.”
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτήν ’ν δεσμεύοντες δήσωσίν με ἐν καλωδίοις καινοῖς οἷς οὐκ ἐγένετο ἐν αὐτοῖς ἔργον, καὶ ἀσθενήσω καὶ ἔσομαι ὡς εἷς τῶν ἀνθρώπων.
He replied, “If they tie me up with new ropes that have never been used, I will become as weak as any other man.”
καὶ ἔλαβεν Δαλειδὰ καλώδια καινὰ καὶ ἔδησεν αὐτὸν ἐν αὐτοῖς, καὶ τὰ ἔνεδρα ἐξῆλθεν ἐκ τοῦ ταμείου, καὶ εἶπεν Ἀλλόφυλοι ἐπὶ σέ, Σαμψών· καὶ διέσπαοεν αὐτὰ ἀπὸ βραχιόνων αὐτοῦ ὡς σπαρτίον.
So Delilah took new ropes, tied him up with them, and called out, “Samson, the Philistines are here!” But while the men were hidden in her room, he snapped the ropes off his arms like they were threads.
καὶ εἶπεν Δαλειδὰ πρὸς Σαμψών Ιδοὺ ἐπλάνησάς με καὶ ἐλάλησας πρὸς ἐμὲ ψευδῆ· ἀπάγγειλον δή μοι ἐν τίνι δεθήσῃ. καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτήν Ἐὰν ὑφάνῃς τὰς ἑπτὰ σειρὰς τῆς κεφαλῆς μου σὺν τῷ διάσματι καὶ ἐνκρούσῃς τῷ πασσάλῳ εἰς τὸν τοῖχον, καὶ ἔσομαι ὡς εἷς τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀσθενής.
Then Delilah said to Samson, “You have mocked me and lied to me all along! Tell me how you can be tied up.” He told her, “If you weave the seven braids of my head into the web of a loom and tighten it with a pin, I will become as weak as any other man.”
καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ κοιμᾶσθαι αὐτὸν καὶ ἔλαβεν Δαλειδὰ τὰς ἑπτὰ σειρὰς τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ ὕφανεν ἐν τῷ δοάσματι καὶ ἔπηξεν τῷ πασσάλῳ εἰς τὸν τοῖχον, καὶ εἶπεν Ἀλλόφυλοι ἐπὶ σέ, Σαμψών· καὶ ἐξυπνίσθη ἐκ τοῦ ὕπνου αὐτοῦ, κοὶ ἐξῆρεν τὸν πάσσαλον τοῦ ὑφάσματος ἐκ τοῦ τοίχου.
So while he slept, Delilah took the seven braids of his hair and wove them into the web. Then she tightened it with a pin and called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he awoke from his sleep and pulled out the pin with the loom and the web.
καὶ εἶπεν Δαλειδὰ πρὸς Σαμψών· Πῶς λέγεις Ἠγάπηκά σε, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἡ καρδία σου μετ’ ἐμοῦ ; τοῦτο τρίτον ἐς με, καὶ οὐκ ἀπήγγειλάς μοι ἐν τίνι ἡ ἰσχύς σου ἡ μεγάλη.
“How can you say, ‘I love you,’” she asked, “when your heart is not with me? This is the third time you have mocked me and failed to reveal to me the source of your great strength!”
καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε ἐξέθλιψεν αὐτὸν ἐν λόγοις αὐτῆς πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας καὶ χώρησεν αὐτόν, καὶ ὠλιγοψύχησεν ἕως τοῦ ἀποθανεῖν.
Finally, after she had pressed him daily with her words and pleaded until he was sick to death,
κοὶ ἀνήγγειλεν οὐτῇ τὴν πᾶσαν καρδίαν αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ οὐκ ἀνέβη ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλήν μου, ὅτι ἅγιος θεοῦ ἐγώ εἰμι ἀπὸ μητρός μου· ἐν οὖν ξυρήσωμαι ἀποστήσεται ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ ἡ μου, καὶ ἀσθενήσω καὶ ἔσομαι ὡς πάντες οἱ ἄνθρωποι.
Samson told her all that was in his heart: “My hair has never been cut, because I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb. If I am shaved, my strength will leave me, and I will become as weak as any other man.”
καὶ εἶδεν Δαλειδὰ ὅτι ἀπήγγειλεν αὐτῇ πᾶσαν τὴν καρδίαν αὐτοῦ, καὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας τῶν ἀλλοφύλων λέγουσα Ἀνάβητε ἔτι τὸ ἅπαξ τοῦτο, ὅτι ἀπήγγειλέν μοι τὴν πᾶσαν καρδίαν αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἀνέβησαν πρὸς αὐτὴν οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν ἀλλοφύλων , καὶ ἀνήνεγκαν τὸ ἀργύριον ἐν χερσὶν αὐτῶν.
When Delilah realized that he had revealed to her all that was in his heart, she sent this message to the lords of the Philistines: “Come up once more, for he has revealed to me all that is in his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came to her, bringing the money in their hands.
καὶ ἐκοίμισεν Δαλειδὰ τὸν Σαμψὼν ἐπὶ τὰ γόνατα αὐτῆς, καὶ ἐκάλεσεν ἄνδρα καὶ ἐξύρησεν τὰς ἑπτὰ σειρὰς τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἤρξατο ταπεινῶσαι αὐτόν, καὶ ἀπέστη ἡ ἰσχὺς αὐτοῦ ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ.
And having lulled him to sleep on her lap, she called a man to shave off the seven braids of his head. In this way she began to subdue him (note: Hebrew; some LXX manuscripts he began to grow weak), and his strength left him.
καὶ εἶπεν Δαλειδά Ἀλλόφυλοι ἐπὶ σέ, Σαμψών. καὶ ἐξυπνίσθη ἐκ τοῦ ὕπνου αὐτοῦ καὶ Ἐξελεύσομαι ὡς ἅπαξ καὶ ἅπαξ, καὶ ἐκτιναχθήσομαι· καὶ οὐκ ἔγνω ὅτι ἀπέστη ὁ κύριος ἀπάνωθεν αὐτοῦ.
Then she called out, “Samson, the Philistines are here!” When Samson awoke from his sleep, he thought, “I will escape as I did before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the LORD had departed from him.
καὶ ἐκράτησαν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι καὶ ἐξέκοψαν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ, καὶ αὐτὸν εἰς Γάζαν καὶ ἐπέδησαν αὐτὸν ἐν πέδαις χαλ καὶ ἦν ἀλήθων ἐν οἴκῳ τοῦ δεσμωτηρίου.
Then the Philistines seized him, gouged out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, where he was bound with bronze shackles and forced to grind grain in the prison.
κοὶ ἤρξατο κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ βλαστάνειν, καθὼς ἐξυρήσατο.
However, the hair of his head began to grow back after it had been shaved.
Καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν ἀλλοφύλων συνήχθησαν θῦσαι μέγα τῷ Δαγὼν θεῷ αὐτῶν καὶ εὐφρανθῆναι, καὶ εἶπαν ὁ θεὸς ἐν χειρὶ ἡμῶν τὸν Σαμψὼν τὸν ἐχθρὸν ἡμῶν.
Now the lords of the Philistines gathered together to offer a great sacrifice to their god Dagon. They rejoiced and said, “Our god has delivered Samson our enemy into our hands.”
καὶ εἶδαν αὐτὸν ὁ λαός, καὶ ὕμνησαν τὸν θεὸν αὐτῶν ὅτι Παρέδωκεν ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν τὸν ἐχθρὸν ἡμῶν ἐν χειρὶ ἡμῶν, τὸν ἐρημοῦντα τὴν γῆν ἡμῶν καὶ ὃς ἐπλήθυνεν τοὺς τραυματίας ἡμῶν.
And when the people saw him, they praised their god, saying: “Our god has delivered into our hands our enemy who destroyed our land and multiplied our dead.”
καὶ ὅτε ἠγαθύνθη ἡ καρδία αὐτῶν, καὶ εἶπαν καλέσατε τὸν Σαμψὼν ἐξ οἴκου φυλακῆς, καὶ παιξάτω ἐνώπιον ἡμῶν. καὶ ἐκάλεσαν τὸν Σαμψὼν ἀπὸ οἴκου δεσμωτηρίου, καὶ ἔπαιζεν ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν· καὶ ἐράπιζον αὐτόν, καὶ ἔστησαν αὐτὸν ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν κιόνων.
And while their hearts were merry, they said, “Call for Samson to entertain us.” So they called Samson out of the prison to entertain them. And they stationed him between the pillars.
καὶ εἶπεν Σαμψὼν πρὸς τὸν νεανίαν τὸν κρατοῦντα τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ Ἄφες με καὶ ψηλαφήσω τοὺς κίονας ἐφ’ οἷς ὁ οἶκος στήκει ἐπ’ αὐτούς, καὶ ἐπιστηριχθήσομαι ἐπ’ αὐτούς.
Samson said to the servant who held his hand, “Lead me where I can feel the pillars supporting the temple, so I can lean against them.”
καὶ ὁ οἶκος πλήρης τῶν ἀνδρῶν καὶ τῶν γυναικῶν, καὶ ἐκεῖ πάντες οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν ἀλλοφύλων, καὶ ἐπὶ τὸ δῶμα ὡς ἑπτακόσιοι ἄνδρες καὶ γυναῖκες οἱ θεωροῦντες ἐν παιγνίαις Σαμψών.
Now the temple was full of men and women; all the lords of the Philistines were there, and about three thousand men and women were on the roof watching Samson entertain them.
καὶ ἔκλαυσεν Σαμψὼν πρὸς Τύριον καὶ εἶπεν Ἀδωναῖε κύριε, μνήσθητι δή μου νῦν καὶ ἐνίσχυσόν με ἔτι τὸ ἅπαξ τοῦτο, θεέ· καὶ ἀνταποδώσω ἀνταπόδοσιν μίαν περὶ τῶν δύο ὀφθαλμῶν μου τοῖς ἀλλοφύλοις.
Then Samson called out to the LORD: “O Lord GOD, please remember me. Strengthen me, O God, just once more, so that with one vengeful blow I may pay back the Philistines for my two eyes.”
καὶ περιέλαβεν τοὺς δύο κίονας τοῦ οἴκου ἐφ’ οὓς ὁ οἶκος ἱστήκει, καὶ ἐπεστηρίχθη ἐπ’ αὐτούς, καὶ ἐκράτησεν ἕνα τῇ δεξιᾷ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἕνα τῆ ἀριστερᾷ αὐτοῦ.
And Samson reached out for the two central pillars supporting the temple. Bracing himself against them with his right hand on one pillar and his left hand on the other,
καὶ εἶπεν Σσμψών Ἀποθανέτω ψυχή μου μετὰ ἀλλοφύλων· καὶ ἐβάσταξεν ἐν ἰσχύι, καὶ ἔπεσεν ὁ οἶκος ἐπὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ ἐπὶ πάντα τὸν λαὸν τὸν ἐν αὐτῶ· καὶ ἤσαν οἱ τεθνηκότες οὓς ἐθανάτωσεν Σαμψών ἐν τῶ θανάτω αὐτοῦ πλείους ἢ οὓς ἐθανάτωσεν ἐν τῇ ζωῇ αὐτοῦ.
Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” Then he pushed with all his might, and the temple fell on the lords and all the people in it. So in his death he killed more than he had killed in his life.
καὶ κατέβησαν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ὁ οἶκος τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔλαβον αὐτὸν καὶ ἀνέβησαν· καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτὸν αὐτὸν μέσον Σαραὰ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον Ἐσθαὸλ ἐν τῷ τάφῳ Μανῶε τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ. καὶ αὐτὸς ἔκρινεν τὸν Ἰσραὴλ εἴκοσι ἔτη.
Then Samson’s brothers and his father’s family came down, carried him back, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of his father Manoah. And he had judged Israel twenty years.
