Adonisédec, roi de Jérusalem, apprit que Josué s'était emparé d'Haï et l'avait dévouée par anathème, qu'il avait traité Haï et son roi comme il avait traité Jéricho et son roi, et que les habitants de Gabaon, ayant fait la paix avec Israël, étaient au milieu d'eux.
Now Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured Ai and devoted it to destruction (note: Forms of the Hebrew cherem refer to the giving over of things or persons to the LORD, either by destroying them or by giving them as an offering; also in verses 28, 35, 37, 39, and 40.)—doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king—and that the people of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living near them.
Il eut alors une grande crainte ; car Gabaon était une grande ville, comme une des villes royales, plus grande même qu'Haï, et tous ses hommes étaient vaillants.
So Adoni-zedek and his people were greatly alarmed, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were mighty.
Adonisédec, roi de Jérusalem, envoya dire à Oham, roi d'Hébron, à Pharam, roi de Jérimoth, à Japhia, roi de Lachis, et à Dabir, roi d'Eglon :
Therefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon, saying,
« Montez vers moi et venez à mon aide, afin que nous frappions Gabaon, car elle a fait la paix avec Josué et avec les enfants d'Israël. »
“Come up and help me. We will attack Gibeon, because they have made peace with Joshua and the Israelites.”
Ainsi cinq rois des Amorrhéens, le roi de Jérusalem, le roi d'Hébron, le roi de Jérimoth, le roi de Lachis et le roi d'Eglon, se rassemblèrent et montèrent avec toutes leurs armées ; ils établirent leur camp près de Gabaon et l'assiégèrent.
So the five kings of the Amorites—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon—joined forces and advanced with all their armies. They camped before Gibeon and made war against it.
Les gens de Gabaon envoyèrent dire à Josué, au camp de Galgala : « Ne refuse pas ta main à tes serviteurs, hâte-toi de monter vers nous, délivre-nous, donne-nous du secours ; car tous les rois des Amorrhéens qui habitent la montagne se sont ligués contre nous. »
Then the men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: “Do not abandon your servants. Come quickly and save us! Help us, because all the kings of the Amorites from the hill country have joined forces against us.”
Josué monta de Galgala, lui et tous les gens de guerre avec lui, et tous les vaillants guerriers.
So Joshua and his whole army, including all the mighty men of valor, came from Gilgal.
Yahweh dit à Josué : « Ne les crains point, car je les ai livrés entre tes mains, et pas un d'eux ne tiendra devant toi. »
The LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for I have delivered them into your hand. Not one of them shall stand against you.”
Josué vint sur eux subitement ; il avait monté de Galgala toute la nuit.
After marching all night from Gilgal, Joshua caught them by surprise.
Et Yahweh jeta sur eux le trouble devant Israël ; Israël leur infligea une grande défaite près de Gabaon, les poursuivit sur le chemin qui monte à Béthoron, et les battit jusqu'à Azéca et Macéda.
And the LORD threw them into confusion before Israel, who defeated them in a great slaughter at Gibeon, pursued them along the ascent to Beth-horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
Comme ils fuyaient devant Israël, à la descente de Béthoron, Yahweh fit tomber du ciel sur eux de grosses pierres jusqu'à Azéca, et ils moururent ; ceux qui moururent par les pierres de grêle furent plus nombreux que ceux qui furent tués par l'épée des enfants d'Israël.
As they fled before Israel along the descent from Beth-horon to Azekah, the LORD cast down on them large hailstones from the sky, and more of them were killed by the hailstones than by the swords of the Israelites.
Alors Josué parla à Yahweh, le jour où Yahweh livra les Amorrhéens aux enfants d'Israël, et il dit à la vue d'Israël : Soleil, arrête-toi sur Gabaon, et toi, lune, sur la vallée d'Ajalon !
On the day that the LORD gave the Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua spoke to the LORD in the presence of Israel: “O sun, stand still over Gibeon, O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon (note: See Jasher 88:63.).”
Et le soleil s'arrêta, et la lune se tint immobile, jusqu'à ce que la nation se fut vengée de ses ennemis. Cela n'est-il pas écrit dans le livre du Juste ? Et le soleil s'arrêta au milieu du ciel, et ne se hâta point de se coucher, presque un jour entier.
So the sun stood still and the moon stopped until the nation took vengeance upon its enemies (note: Or triumphed over its enemies). Is this not written in the Book of Jashar (note: Or the Book of the Upright One, commonly cited as Jasher)? “So the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day (note: See Jasher 88:64.).”
Il n'y eut pas, ni avant ni après, de jour comme celui-là, où Yahweh obéit à la voix d'un homme ; car Yahweh combattait pour Israël.
There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD listened to the voice of a man, because the LORD fought for Israel.
Et Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, retourna au camp à Galgala.
Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.
Les cinq rois s'enfuirent et se cachèrent dans la caverne, à Macéda.
Now the five kings had fled and hidden in the cave at Makkedah.
On le rapporta à Josué, en disant : « Les cinq rois ont été trouvés cachés dans la caverne à Macéda. »
And Joshua was informed: “The five kings have been found; they are hiding in the cave at Makkedah.”
Josué dit : « Roulez de grosses pierres à l'entrée de la caverne, et mettez-y des hommes pour les garder.
So Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and post men there to guard them.
Et vous, ne vous arrêtez pas ; poursuivez vos ennemis et frappez-les en queue ; ne les laissez pas entrer dans leurs villes, car Yahweh, votre Dieu, les a livrés entre vos mains. »
But you, do not stop there. Pursue your enemies and attack them from behind. Do not let them reach their cities, for the LORD your God has delivered them into your hand.”
Lorsque Josué et les enfants d'Israël eurent achevé de leur infliger une très grande défaite jusqu'à les exterminer, ceux qui purent s'échapper s'étant réfugiés dans les villes fortifiées,
So Joshua and the Israelites continued to inflict a terrible slaughter until they had finished them off, and the remaining survivors retreated to the fortified cities.
tout le peuple revint tranquillement au camp, vers Josué, à Macéda, sans que personne remuât la langue contre les enfants d'Israël.
The whole army returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one dared to utter a word against the Israelites.
Josué dit : « Ouvrez l'entrée de la caverne, faites sortir, pour me les amener, ces cinq rois de la caverne. »
Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.”
Ils firent ainsi, et lui amenèrent les cinq rois, qu'ils avaient fait sortir de la caverne, le roi de Jérusalem, le roi d'Hébron, le roi de Jérimoth, le roi de Lachis et le roi d'Eglon.
So they brought the five kings out of the cave—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon.
Lorsqu'ils eurent fait sortir ces rois devant Josué, Josué appela tous les hommes d'Israël et dit aux chefs des gens de guerre qui l'avaient accompagné : « Approchez-vous, mettez vos pieds sur le cou de ces rois. » Ils s'approchèrent et mirent leurs pieds sur leurs cous.
When they had brought the kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had accompanied him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So the commanders came forward and put their feet on their necks.
Et Josué leur dit : « Ne craignez point et ne vous effrayez point, soyez fermes et courageux, car c'est ainsi que Yahweh traitera tous vos ennemis contre lesquels vous combattez. »
“Do not be afraid or discouraged,” Joshua said. “Be strong and courageous, for the LORD will do this to all the enemies you fight.”
Après cela Josué les frappa de l'épée et les fit mourir ; il les pendit à cinq arbres, et ils y restèrent pendus jusqu'au soir.
After this, Joshua struck down and killed the kings, and he hung their bodies on five trees (note: Or impaled their bodies on five poles; similarly in verse 27) and left them there until evening.
Vers le coucher du soleil, Josué les fit descendre des arbres ; on les jeta dans la caverne où ils s'étaient cachés, et l'on mit à l'entrée de la caverne de grosses pierres, qui y sont restées jusqu'à ce jour même.
At sunset Joshua ordered that they be taken down from the trees and thrown into the cave in which they had hidden. Then large stones were placed against the mouth of the cave, and the stones are there to this day.
Le même jour, Josué s'empara de Macéda et la frappa, elle et son roi, du tranchant de l'épée ; il dévoua par anathème la ville et tous les êtres vivants qui s'y trouvaient, sans laisser échapper personne, et il traita le roi de Macéda comme il avait traité le roi de Jéricho.
On that day Joshua captured Makkedah and put it to the sword, along with its king. He devoted to destruction everyone in the city, leaving no survivors. So he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, passa de Macéda à Lebna, et il attaqua Lebna.
Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah and fought against Libnah.
Yahweh la livra aussi, avec son roi, entre les mains d'Israël, et il la frappa du tranchant de l'épée, elle et tous les êtres vivants qui s'y trouvaient, sans en laisser échapper aucun, et il traita son roi comme il avait traité le roi de Jéricho.
And the LORD also delivered that city and its king into the hand of Israel, and Joshua put all the people to the sword, leaving no survivors. And he did to the king of Libnah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, passa de Lebna à Lachis ; il établit son camp devant elle et l'attaqua.
And Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish. They laid siege to it and fought against it.
Et Yahweh livra Lachis entre les mains d'Israël, qui la prit le second jour, et la frappa du tranchant de l'épée, elle et tous les êtres vivants qui s'y trouvaient, comme il avait fait pour Lebna. —
And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, and Joshua captured it on the second day. He put all the people to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah.
Alors Horam, roi de Gaser, monta pour secourir Lachis ; Josué le battit, lui et son peuple, sans laisser échapper personne.
At that time Horam king of Gezer went to help Lachish, but Joshua struck him down along with his people, leaving no survivors.
Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, passa de Lachis à Eglon ; ils établirent leur camp devant elle et l'attaquèrent.
So Joshua moved on from Lachish to Eglon, and all Israel with him. They laid siege to it and fought against it.
Ils la prirent le même jour, et la frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée ; tous les êtres vivants qui s'y trouvaient, Josué les dévoua par anathème ce jour-là, selon tout ce qu'il avait fait pour Lachis.
That day they captured Eglon and put it to the sword, and Joshua devoted to destruction everyone in the city, just as he had done to Lachish.
Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, monta d'Eglon à Hébron, et ils l'attaquèrent.
Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron and fought against it.
L'ayant prise, ils la frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée, elle, son roi, toutes les villes de sa dépendance et tous les êtres vivants qui s'y trouvaient, sans laisser échapper personne, comme Josué avait fait pour Eglon ; et il la dévoua par anathème, avec tous les êtres vivants qui s'y trouvaient.
They captured it and put to the sword its king, all its villages, and all the people. Joshua left no survivors, just as he had done at Eglon; he devoted to destruction Hebron and everyone in it.
Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, se tourna vers Dabir, et il l'attaqua.
Finally Joshua and all Israel with him turned toward Debir and fought against it.
Il la prit, elle, son roi et toutes les villes de sa dépendance ; et ils les frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée, et ils dévouèrent par anathème tous les êtres vivants qui s'y trouvaient, sans laisser échapper personne. Josué traita Dabir et son roi comme il avait traité Hébron, et comme il avait traité Lebna et son roi.
And they captured Debir, its king, and all its villages. They put them to the sword and devoted to destruction everyone in the city, leaving no survivors. Joshua did to Debir and its king as he had done to Hebron and as he had done to Libnah and its king.
Josué frappa tout le pays : la Montagne, le Négéb, le bas pays et les coteaux, avec tous leurs rois, sans laisser échapper personne, dévouant par anathème tout ce qui avait vie, comme l'avait ordonné Yahweh, le Dieu d'Israël.
So Joshua conquered the whole region—the hill country, the Negev, the foothills (note: Hebrew Shephelah or lowlands; that is, the western foothills of Judea), and the slopes, together with all their kings—leaving no survivors. He devoted to destruction everything that breathed, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.
Josué les battit de Cadès-Barné à Gaza, et tout le pays de Gosen jusqu'à Gabaon.
Joshua conquered the area from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and the whole region of Goshen as far as Gibeon.
Josué prit tous ces rois et tout leur pays dans une seule expédition, car Yahweh, le Dieu d'Israël, combattait pour Israël.
And because the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel, Joshua captured all these kings and their land in one campaign.
Puis Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, retourna au camp, à Galgala.
Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.
