Jonah 1 — parallel

1:1

ΚΑΙ ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου πρὸς Ἰωνᾶν τὸν τοῦ Ἀμαθεὶ λέγων,

Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying,

1:2

ʼἈνάστηθι καὶ πορεύθητι εἰς Νινευὴ τὴν πόλιν τὴν μεγάλην καὶ κήρυξον ἐν αὐτῇ, ὅτι ἀνέβη ἡ κραυγὴ τῆς κακίας αὐτῆς πρὸς μέ.

“Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before Me.”

1:3

καὶ ἀνέστη Ἰωνᾶς τοῦ φυγεῖν εἰς Θαρσεὶς ἐκ προσώπου Κυρίου, καὶ κατέβη εἰς Ἰόππην· καὶ εὗρεν πλοῖον βαδίζον εἰς Θαρσείς, καὶ ἔδωκεν τὸ ναῦλον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐνέβη εἰς αὐτὸ τοῦ πλεῦσαι μετʼ αὐτῶν εἰς Θαρσεὶς ἐκ προσώπου Κυρίου.

Jonah, however, got up to flee to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship bound for Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went aboard to sail for Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD.

1:4

Καὶ Κύριος ἐξήγειρεν πνεῦμα ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν, καὶ ἐγένετο κλύδων μέγας ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ, καὶ τὸ πλοῖον ἐκινδύνευεν συντριβῆναι.

Then the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship was in danger of breaking apart.

1:5

καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν οἱ ναυτικοὶ καὶ ἀνεβόησαν ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν θεὸν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐκβολὴν ἐποιήσαντο τῶν σκευῶν τῶν ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, τοῦ κουφισθῆναι ἀπʼ αὐτῶν· Ἰωνᾶς δὲ κατέβη εἰς τὴν κοίλην τοῦ πλοίου, καὶ ἐκάθευδεν καὶ ἔρεγχεν.

The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the ship’s cargo into the sea to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

1:6

καὶ προσῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ πρωρεὺς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Τί σὺ ῥέγχεις; ἀνάστα καὶ ἐπικαλοῦ τὸν θεόν σου, ὅπως διασώσῃ ὁ θεὸς ἡμᾶς καὶ μὴ ἀπολώμεθα.

The captain approached him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call upon your God. Perhaps this God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”

1:7

καὶ εἶπευ ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ Δεῦτε βάλωμεν κλήρους καὶ ἐπιγνῶμεν τίνος ἕνεκεν ἡ κακία αὕτη ἐστὶν ἐν ἡμῖν. καὶ ἔβαλον κλήρους. καὶ ἔπεσεν ὁ κλῆρος ἐπὶ Ἰωνᾶν.

“Come!” said the sailors to one another. “Let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity that is upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

1:8

καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν Ἀπάγγειλον ἡμῖν τίς σου ἡ ἐργασία ἐστίν, καὶ πόθεν ἔρχῃ. καὶ ἐκ ποίας χώρας καὶ ἐκ ποίου λαοῦ εἶ σύ;

“Tell us now,” they demanded, “who is to blame for this calamity that is upon us? What is your occupation, and where have you come from? What is your country, and who are your people?”

1:9

καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Δοῦλος Κυρίου ἐγὼ εἰμι, καὶ τὸν κύριον θεὸν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐγῶ σέβομαι, ὃς ἐποίησεν τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ τὴν ξηράν.

“I am a Hebrew,” replied Jonah. “I worship the LORD, the God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land.”
