Job 40 — parallel

40:1

Ἔτι δὲ ὑπολαβὼν ὁ κύριος εἶπεν τῷ Ἰὼβ ἐκ τοῦ νέφους

And the LORD said to Job:

40:2

Μή, ἀλλὰ ζῶσαι ὥσπερ ἀνὴρ τὴν ὀσφύν σου. ἐρωτήσω δέ σε, σὺ δέ μοι ἀπόκριναι·

“Will the faultfinder contend with the Almighty? Let him who argues with God give an answer.”

40:3

μὴ ἀποποιοῦ μου τὸ κρίμα. οἴει δέ με ἄλλως σοι κεχρηματικέναι ἡ ἵνα ἀναφανῇς δίκαιος

Then Job answered the LORD:

40:4

ἣ βραχίων σοί ἐστιν κατὰ τοῦ κυρίου, ἢ φωνῇ κατʼ αὐτοῦ βροντᾶς;

“Behold, I am insignificant. How can I reply to You? I place my hand over my mouth.

40:5

ἀνάλαβε δὴ ὕψος καὶ δύναμιν. δόξαν δὲ καὶ τιμὴν ἀμφίεσαι.

I have spoken once, but I have no answer—twice, but I have nothing to add.”

40:6

ἀπόστειλον δὲ ἀγγέλους ὀργῇ. πᾶν δὲ ὑβριστὴν ταπείνωσον,

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:

40:7

ὑπερήφανον δὲ σβέσον· σῆψον δὲ ἀσεβεῖς παραχρῆμα.

“Now brace like a man; I will question you, .

40:8

κρύψον δὲ εἰς γῆν ὁμοθυμαδόν, τὰ δὲ πρόσωπα αὐτῶν ἀτιμίας ἔμπλησον·

Would you really annul My justice? Would you condemn Me to justify yourself?

40:9

ὁμολογήσω ὅτι δύναται ἡ δεξιά σου σῶ

Do you have an arm like God’s? Can you thunder with a voice like His?

40:10

ἀλλὰ δὴ ἰδοὺ δὴ θηρία παρὰ σοί, χόρτον ἴσα βουσὶν ἐσθίουσιν.

Then adorn yourself with majesty and splendor, and clothe yourself with honor and glory.

40:11

ἰδοὸ δὴ ἰσχὺς αὐτοῦ ἐπʼ ὀσφύι. ἡ δὲ δύναμις ἐπʼ ὀμφαλοῦ γαστρός·

Unleash the fury of your wrath; look on every proud man and bring him low.

40:12

ἔστησεν οὐρὰν ὡς κυπάρισσον, τὰ δὲ νεῦρα αὐτοῦ συμπέπλεκται·

Look on every proud man and humble him; trample the wicked where they stand.

40:13

αἱ πλευραὶ αὐτοῦ πλευραὶ χάλκειαι, ἡ δὲ ῥάχις αὐτοῦ σίδηρος χυτός.

Bury them together in the dust; imprison them .

40:14

τοῦτ᾿ ἔστιν ἀρχὴ πλάσματος Κυρίου, πεποιημένον ἐνκαταπαίζεσθαι ὑπὸ τῶν ἀγγέλων αὐτοῦ.

Then I will confess to you that your own right hand can save you.

40:15

ἐπελθὰλν δὲ ἐπʼ ὄρος ἀκρότομον ἐποίησεν χαρμονὴν τετράποσιν ἐν τῷ ταρτάρῳ·

Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you. He feeds on grass like an ox.

40:16

ὑπὸ παντοδαπὰ δένδρα κοιμᾶται. παρὰ πάπυρον καὶ κάλαμον καὶ βούτομον·

See the strength of his loins and the power in the muscles of his belly.

40:17

σκιάζονται δὲ ἐν αὐτῷ δένδρα μεγάλα σὺν ῥαδάμνοις. καὶ κλῶνες ἀγροῦ.

His tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are tightly knit.

40:18

ἐὰν γένηται πλήμμυρα. οὐ μὴ ασθηθῆ, πέποιθευ ὅτι προσκρούσει ὁ Ἰορδάνης εἰς τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ·

His bones are tubes of bronze; his limbs are rods of iron.

40:19

ἐν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ αὐτοῦ δέξεται αὐτόν ἐνσκολιευόμενος τρήσει ῤῖνα;

He is the foremost of God’s ; only his Maker can draw the sword against him.

40:20

ἄξεις δὲ δράκοντα ἐν ἀγκίστοῳ. περιθήσεις δὲ φορβεάν περὶ ῥἴνα αὐτοῦ;

The hills yield him their produce, while all the beasts of the field play nearby.

40:21

εἰ δήσεις κρίκον ἐν τῷ μυκτῆρι αὐτοῦ, ψελίῳ δὲ τρυπήσεις τὸ χεῖλος αὐτοῦς

He lies under , hidden among the reeds of the marsh.

40:22

λαλήσει δέ σοι δεήσει, ἱκετηρίᾳ μαλακῶς

The lotus plants conceal him in their shade; of the brook surround him.

40:23

θήσεται διαθήκην μετὰ σοῦ; λήμψῃ δὲ αὐτὸν δοῦλον αἰώνιον;

Though the river rages, Behemoth is unafraid; he remains secure, though the Jordan surges to his mouth.

40:24

παίξῃ δὲ ἐν αὐτῷ ὥσπερ ὀρνέῳ, ἢ δήσεις αὐτὸν ὥσπερ στρουθίον παιδίῳς

Can anyone capture him as he looks on, or pierce his nose with a snare?

40:25

ἐνσιτοῦνται δὲ ἐν αὐτῷ ἔθνη, μεριτεύονται δὲ αὐτὸν Φοινίκων ἔθνη;

^41:1 “Can you pull in Leviathan with a hook or tie down his tongue with a rope?

40:26

χῆν δὲ πλωτὸν συνελθὸν οὐ μὴ ἐνέγκαοσιν βύρσαν μίαν οὐρᾶς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐν πλοίοις ἀλιέαων κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ.

^41:2 Can you put a cord through his nose or pierce his jaw with a hook?

40:27

ἐπιθήσει δὲ αὐτῷ χείρα, μνησθεὶς πόλεμον τὸν γινόμενον ἐν σώματι αὐτοῦ.

^41:3 Will he beg you for mercy or speak to you softly?
