ΑΝΘΡΩΠΟΣ τις ἦν ἐν χῶρᾳ τῇ Αὐσίτιδι ᾧ ὄνομα Ἰὼβ· καὶ ἣν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος ἀληθινός, ἄμεμπτος, δίκαιος. θεοσεβής, ἀπεχόμενος ἀπὸ παντὸς πονηροῦ πράγματος.
There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. And this man was blameless and upright, fearing God and shunning evil.
καὶ ἣν τὰ κτήνη αὐτοῦ πρόβατα ἑπτακισχίλια, κάμηλοι τρισχίλιαι, ζεύγη βοῶν πεντακόσια, ὄνοι θήλειαι νομάδες πεντακόσιαι. καὶ ὑπηρεσία πολλὴ σφόδρα καὶ ἔργα μεγάλα ἦν αὐτῷ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· καὶ ἦν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος εὐγενὴς τῶν ἀφʼ ἡλίου ἀνατολῶν.
and he owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man of all the people of the East.
συμπορευόμενοι δὲ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ πρὸς ἀλλήλους ἐποιοῦσαν πότον καθʼ ἑκάστην ἡμέραν, συμπαραλαμβάνοντες ἅμα καὶ τὰς τρεῖς ἀδελφὰς αὐτῶν ἐσθίειν καὶ πίνειν μετʼ αὐτῶν.
Job’s sons would take turns holding feasts in their homes, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
καὶ ὡς ἂν συνετελέσθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ πότου, ἀπέστελλεν Ἰὼ καὶ ἐκαθάριζεν αὐτοὺς ἀνιστάμενος τὸ πρωί, καὶ προσέφερεν περὶ αὐτῶν θυσίαν κατὰ τὸν ἀριθμὸν αὐτῶν καὶ μόσχον ἕνα περὶ ἁμαρτίας περὶ τῶν ψυχῶν αὐτῶν· ἔλεγεν γὰρ Ἰώβ Μή ποτε οἱ υἱοί μου ἐν τῇ διανοίᾳ αὐτῶν κακὰ ἐνενόησαν πρὸς θεόν. οὕτως οὖν ἐποίει Ἰὼβ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας.
And when the days of feasting were over, Job would send for his children to purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for all of them. For Job thought, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular practice.
Καὶ ὡς ἐγένετο ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἦλθον οἱ ἄγγελοι τοῦ θεοῦ παραστῆναι ἐνώπιον τοῦ κυρίου, καὶ ὁ διάβολος ἦλθεν μετʼ αὐτῶν.
One day the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan (note: That is, the Accuser or the Adversary; here and throughout Job 1) also came with them.
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ κύριος τῷ διαβόλῳ Πόθεν παραγέγονας ; καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ διάβολος τῷ κυρίῳ εἶπεν Περιελθὼν τὴν γῆν καὶ ἐμπεριπατήσας τὴν ὑπʼ οὐρανὸν πάρεμι.
“Where have you come from?” said the LORD to Satan. “From roaming through the earth,” he replied, “and walking back and forth in it.”
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ κύριος Προσέσχες τῇ δανοίᾳ σου κατὰ τοῦ παιδός μου Ἰὼβ; ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν κατʼ αὐτὸν τῶν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, ἄνθρωπος ἄμεμπτος, ἀληθινός, θεοσεβής, ἀπεχόμενος ἀπὸ παντὸς πονηροῦ πράγματος.
Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil.”
ἀπεκρίθη δὲ ὁ διάβολος καὶ εἶπεν ἐναντίον τοῦ κυρίρυ Μὴ δωρεὰν σέβεται Ἰὼβ τὸν κύριον;
Satan answered the LORD, “Does Job fear God for nothing?
οὐ σὺ περιἐφραξας τὰ ἔξω αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ ἕσαν τῆς οἰκἰας αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ ἔξω πάντων τῶν ὄντων αὐτῷ κύκλῳ; τὰ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν αὐτοῦ εὐλόγησας, καὶ τὰ κτήνη αὐτοῦ πολλὰ ἐποίησας ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.
Have You not placed a hedge on every side around him and his household and all that he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
ἀλλὰ ἀπόστειλον τὴν χεῖρά σου καὶ ἅψαι πάνταον ὧυ ἔχει· εἰ μὴν εἰς πρόσωπόν σε εὐλογήσει.
But stretch out Your hand and strike all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face.”
τότε εἶπεν ὁ κύρωως τῷ διαβόλῳ Ἰδοὺ πάντα ὅσα ἐστὶν αὐτῷ δίδαυμι ἐν τῇ χειρί σου, ἀλλὰ αὐτοῦ μὴ ἅψῃ. καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ διάβολος παρὰ τοῦ κυρίου.
“Very well,” said the LORD to Satan. “Everything he has is in your hands, but you must not lay a hand on the man himself.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.
καὶ ἦν ὡς ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη, οἱ υἱρὶ Ἰὼβ καὶ αἱ θυγατέρες αὐτοῦ ἔπινον οἶνον ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτῶν τοῦ πρεσβυτέρου.
One day, while Job’s sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,
καὶ ἰδοὸ ἄγγωλος ἦλθεν πρὸς Ἰὼβ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτχῷ Τὰ ζεύγη τῶν βοῶν ἠροτρία. καὶ αἱ θήλειαι ὄνοι ἐβόσκοντο ἐχόμεναι αὐτῶν·
a messenger came and reported to Job: “While the oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby,
καὶ ἐλθόντες οἱ αἰχμαλωτεύοντες ᾐχμαλώτευσαν αὐτάς, καὶ τοὺς παῖδας ἀπέκτειναν ἐν μαχαίραις· σωθεὶς δὲ ἐγὼ μόνος ἦλθον τοῦ ἀπαγγεῖλαί σοι.
the Sabeans swooped down and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
ἔτι τούτου λαλοῦντος ἦλθεν ἕτερος ἄγγελος καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς Ἰώβ Πῦρ ἔπεσεν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ κατέκαυσεν τὰ πρόβατα, καὶ τοὺς ποιμένας κατέφαγεν ὁμοίαος· σωθεὶς δὲ ἐγὼ μόνος ἦλθον τοῦ ἀπαγγεῖλαί σοι.
While he was still speaking, another messenger came and reported: “The fire of God fell from heaven. It burned and consumed the sheep and the servants, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
ἔτι τούτου λαλοῦντος ἦλθεν ἕτερος ἄγγελος καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς Ἰώβ ἱ ἱππεῖς ἐποίησαν ἡμῖν κεφαλὰς γ', καὶ ἐκύκλωσαν τὰς καμήλους καὶ ήχμαλώτευσαν αὐτάς, καὶ τοὺς παῖδας ἀπέκτειναν μαχαίραις· ἐσώθην δὲ ἐγὼ μόνος καὶ ἦλθον τοῦ ἀπαγγεῖλαί σοι.
While he was still speaking, another messenger came and reported: “The Chaldeans formed three bands, raided the camels, and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
ἔτι τούτου λαλοῦντος ἄλλος ἄγγελος ἔρχεται λέγων τῷ Ἰώβ Τῶν υἱῶν σου καὶ τῶν θυγατέρων σου ἐσθιόντων καὶ πινόντων παρὰ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτῶν τῷ πρεσβυτέρῳ,
While he was still speaking, another messenger came and reported: “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,
ἐξαίφνης πνεῦμα μέγα ἐπῆλθεν ἐκ τῆς ὲτελεύτηησαν· καὶ ἥψατο τῶν τεσσάρων γωνιῶν τῆς οἰκίας· καὶ ἔπεσεν ἡ οἰκία ἐπὶ τὰ παιδία σου, καὶ ἐτελεύτησαν· ἐσώθην δὲ ἐγὼ μόνος καὶ ἦλθον τοῦ ἀπαγγεῖλαί σοι.
when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on the young people and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
οὔτως ἀναστὰς Ἰὼβ διέρρηξεν τὰ ἱμάτια ἑαυτοῦ καὶ ἐκείρατο τὴν κόμηυ τῆς κεφαλῆς, καὶ πεκὼν χαμαὶ προσεκύνησεν
Then Job stood up, tore his robe, and shaved his head. He fell to the ground and worshiped,
καὶ εἶπεν Αὐτὸς γυμνὸς ἐξῆλθον ἐκ κοιλίας μητρός μου· γυμνὸς καὶ ἀπελεύσομαι ἐκεῖ. ὁ κύριος ἔδωκεν, ὁ κύριος ἀφείλατο· ὡς τῷ κυρίῳ ἔδοξεν, οὕτως ἐγένετο· εἴη τὸ ὄνομα Κυρἰου εὐλογημένον.
saying: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD.”
ἐν τούτοις πᾶσιν τοῖς συμβεβηκόσιν αὐτῷ οὐδὲν ἥμαρτεν Ἰὼβ ἐναντίον τοῦ κυρίου, καὶ οὐκ ἔδωκεν ἀφροσύνην τῷ θεῷ.
In all this, Job did not sin or charge God with wrongdoing.
