This is the word of the LORD about the nations—the word that came to Jeremiah the prophet
Sur l'Egypte. — Contre l’armée du Pharaon Néchao, roi d’Egypte, qui était près du fleuve de l’Euphrate, à Carchémis, et que battit Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, la quatrième année de Joakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda.
concerning Egypt and the army of Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt, which was defeated at Carchemish on the Euphrates River by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah:
Préparez l'écu et le bouclier, et marchez au combat !
“Deploy your shields, small and large; advance for battle!
Attelez les chevaux ; montez, cavaliers ! A vos rangs, vous qui portez le casque ! Fourbissez les lances, endossez la cuirasse !
Harness the horses; mount the steeds; take your positions with helmets on! Polish your spears; put on armor!
Que vois-je ? Ils sont frappés d’épouvante, ils tournent le dos ! Leurs guerriers sont battus, ils fuient sans se retourner ! Terreur de toutes parts ! — oracle de Yahweh.
Why am I seeing this? They are terrified, they are retreating; their warriors are defeated, they flee in haste without looking back; terror is on every side!” declares the LORD.
Que l'homme agile ne fuie pas, que le vaillant n'échappe pas ! Au septentrion, sur les rives du fleuve de l'Euphrate, ils ont chancelé, ils sont tombés !
“The swift cannot flee, and the warrior cannot escape! In the north by the River Euphrates they stumble and fall.
Qui est-ce qui monte, pareil au Nil, dont les flots bouillonnent, pareils à des fleuves ?
Who is this, rising like the Nile, like rivers whose waters churn?
C'est l'Egypte qui monte, pareille au Nil, dont les flots bouillonnent, pareils à des fleuves. Elle a dit : Je monterai, je couvrirai la terre, je détruirai les villes et leurs habitants.
Egypt rises like the Nile, and its waters churn like rivers, boasting, ‘I will rise and cover the earth; I will destroy the cities and their people.’
Montez, chevaux ! Chars, précipitez-vous ! En marche, guerriers ! Ethiopiens et Lybiens qui manient le bouclier, Lydiens qui manient et bandent l'arc !
Advance, O horses! Race furiously, O chariots! Let the warriors come forth—Cush (note: That is, the upper Nile region) and Put carrying their shields, men of Lydia drawing the bow.
Mais ce jour est au Seigneur Yahweh des armées ; jour de vengeance pour se venger de ses ennemis ! L’épée dévore et se rassasie, elle s'abreuve de leur sang. Car c'est une immolation pour le Seigneur Yahweh des armées, au pays du septentrion, sur le fleuve de l'Euphrate.
For that day belongs to the Lord GOD of Hosts, a day of vengeance against His foes. The sword will devour until it is satisfied, until it is quenched with their blood. For the Lord GOD of Hosts will hold a sacrifice in the land of the north by the River Euphrates.
Monte à Galaad et prends du baume, vierge, fille de l'Egypte. En vain tu multiplies les remèdes ; il n'y a point de guérison pour toi.
Go up to Gilead for balm, O Virgin Daughter of Egypt! In vain you try many remedies, but for you there is no healing.
Les nations ont appris ta honte, et tes cris de détresse remplissent la terre. Car le guerrier se heurte au guerrier ; ils tombent tous deux.
The nations have heard of your shame, and your outcry fills the earth, because warrior stumbles over warrior and both of them have fallen together.”
La parole qu’adressa Yahweh à Jérémie, le prophète, sur la venue de Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, pour frapper le pays d'Egypte.
This is the word that the LORD spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to strike the land of Egypt:
Publiez-le en Egypte, faites-le entendre à Migdol, faites-le entendre à Noph et à Taphnès ; dites : A vos rangs, tenez-vous prêts ; déjà l'épée dévore autour de vous !
“Announce it in Egypt, and proclaim it in Migdol; proclaim it in Memphis (note: LXX; Hebrew Noph; also in verse 19) and Tahpanhes: ‘Take your positions and prepare yourself, for the sword devours those around you.’
Quoi ! ton héros est renversé ! Il ne s'est pas tenu debout, car Yahweh l'a jeté par terre.
Why have your warriors been laid low? They cannot stand, for the LORD has thrust them down.
Il multiplie ceux qui trébuchent ; ils tombent les uns sur les autres, et ils disent : Levons-nous, retournons vers notre peuple et dans notre pays natal, loin de l'épée homicide.
They continue to stumble; indeed, they have fallen over one another. They say, ‘Get up! Let us return to our people and to the land of our birth, away from the sword of the oppressor.’
Là ils crient : Pharaon, roi d'Egypte est perdu ; il a laissé passer le temps favorable.
There they will cry out: ‘Pharaoh king of Egypt was all noise; he has let the appointed time pass him by.’
Je suis vivant ! — oracle du roi dont le nom est Yahweh des armées : Comme le Thabor parmi les montagnes, comme le Carmel au-dessus de la mer, il vient.
As surely as I live, declares the King, whose name is the LORD of Hosts, there will come one who is like Tabor among the mountains and like Carmel by the sea.
Prépare ton bagage de captive, habitante, fille de l'Egypte ; car Noph va devenir un désert ; elle sera brûlée et sans habitants.
Pack your bags for exile, O daughter dwelling in Egypt! For Memphis will be laid waste, destroyed and uninhabited.
L'Egypte est une génisse très belle ; un taon vient, vient du septentrion.
Egypt is a beautiful heifer, but a gadfly from the north is coming against her.
Ses mercenaires au milieu d'elle sont comme des veaux engraissés. Eux aussi, ils tournent le dos, ils fuient tous ensemble ; ils ne résistent point ; car il est venu sur eux le jour de leur calamité, le temps de leur châtiment.
Even the mercenaries among her are like fattened calves. They too will turn back; together they will flee, they will not stand their ground, for the day of calamity is coming upon them—the time of their punishment.
Sa voix est comme le bruit du serpent qui s'en va ; car ils sont venus en force, ils sont arrivés chez elle avec des haches, pareils à des bûcherons.
Egypt will hiss like a fleeing serpent (note: Hebrew nachash; translated in most cases as snake), for the enemy will advance in force; with axes they will come against her like woodsmen cutting down trees.
Ils ont abattu sa forêt, — oracle de Yahweh, alors qu'elle était impénétrable ; car ils sont plus nombreux que les sauterelles, et on ne peut les compter.
They will chop down her forest, declares the LORD, dense though it may be, for they are more numerous than locusts; they cannot be counted.

The Daughter of Egypt will be put to shame; she will be delivered into the hands of the people of the north.”
Yahweh des armées, Dieu d'Israël, a dit : Voici que je vais visiter Amon de No, et Pharaon, et l'Egypte, et ses dieux, et ses rois, et Pharaon, et ceux qui se fient à lui.
The LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “Behold, I am about to punish Amon god of Thebes, along with Pharaoh, Egypt with her gods and kings, and those who trust in Pharaoh.
Et je les livrerai aux mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie, aux mains de Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, et aux mains de ses serviteurs. Et après cela, elle sera habitée, comme aux jours d'autrefois, — oracle de Yahweh.
I will deliver them into the hands of those who seek their lives—of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and his officers. But after this, Egypt will be inhabited as in days of old, declares the LORD.
Toi donc, ne crains pas, mon serviteur Jacob ; ne t'effraie pas, Israël. Car voici que je vais te tirer de la terre lointaine, et ta postérité du pays de son exil ; Jacob reviendra, il sera tranquille, en sécurité, sans que personne l'épouvante.
But you, O Jacob My servant, do not be afraid, and do not be dismayed, O Israel. For I will surely save you out of a distant place, your descendants from the land of their captivity! Jacob will return to quiet and ease, with no one to make him afraid.
Et toi, ne crains pas, mon serviteur Jacob, — oracle de Yahweh, — car je suis avec toi ! Je ferai une extermination dans toutes les nations où je t'ai chassé. Pour toi, je ne t'exterminerai pas. Mais je te châtierai selon la justice, et je ne te laisserai pas impuni.
And you, My servant Jacob, do not be afraid, declares the LORD, for I am with you. Though I will completely destroy all the nations to which I have banished you, I will not completely destroy you. Yet I will discipline you justly, and will by no means leave you unpunished.”
