Ἀδὰμ δὲ ἔγνω Εὕαν τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ, καὶ συνέλαβεν κα ἔτεκεν τὸν Κάιν. καὶ εἶπεν Ἐκτησάμην ἄνθρωπον διὰ τοῦ θεοῦ.
And Adam had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain (note: Cain sounds like the Hebrew for acquired or brought forth.). “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man,” she said.
καὶ πορσέθηκεν τεκεῖν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν Ἅβελ. καὶ ἐγένετο Ἅβελ ποιμὴν προβάτων· Κάιν δὲ ἦν ἐργαζόμενος τὴν γῆν.
Later she gave birth to Cain’s brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, while Cain was a tiller of the soil.
καὶ ἐγένετο μεθ’ ἡμέρας ἤνεγκεν Κάιν ἀπὸ τῶν καρπῶν τῆς γῆς θυσίαν τῷ κυρίῳ·
So in the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruit of the soil as an offering to the LORD,
καὶ Ἅβελ ἤνεγκεν καὶ αὐτὸς ἀπὸ τῶν πρωτοτόκων τῶν προβάτων αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν στεάτων αὐτῶν. καὶ ἔπιδεν ὁ θεὸς ἐπὶ Ἅβελ καὶ ἐπὶ τοῖς δώροις αὐτοῦ.
while Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
ἐπὶ δὲ Κάιν καὶ ἐπὶ ταῖς θυσίαις αὐτοῦ οὐ προσέσχεν. καὶ ἐλύπησεν τὸν Κάιν λίαν καὶ συνέπεσεν τῷ προσώπῳ.
but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell.
καὶ εἶπεν Κύριος ὁ θεὸς τῷ Κάιν Ἵνα τί περίλυπος ἐγένου, καὶ ἵνα τί συνέπεσεν τὸ πρόσωπόν σου;
“Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “and why has your countenance fallen?
οὐκ ἐὰν ὀρθῶς προσενέγκῃς, ὀρθῶς δὲ μὴ διέλῃς, ἥμαρτες; ἡσύχασον· πρὸς σὲ ἡ ἀποστροφὴ αὐτοῦ, καὶ σὺ ἄρξεις αὐτοῦ.
If you (note: Or it desires to control you) do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.”
καὶ εἶπεν Κάιν πρὸς Ἅβελ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ Διέλθωμεν εἰς τὸ πεδίον. καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ εἶναι αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ καὶ ἀνέστη Κάιν ἐπὶ Ἅβελ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπέκτεινεν αὐτόν.
Then Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ θεὸς πρὸς Κάιν Ποῦ ἐστιν Ἅβελ ὁ ἀδελφός σου; ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Οὐ γινώσκω· μὴ φύλαξ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ μού εἰ μί’ ἐγώ;
And the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I do not know!” he answered. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ θεός Τί ἐποίησας; φωνή αἵματος τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου βοᾷ πρὸς μὲ ἐκ τῆς γῆς.
“What have you done?” replied the LORD. “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.
καὶ νῦν ἐπικατάρατος σὺ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, ἢ ἔχανεν τὸ στόμα αὐτῆς δέξασθαι τὸ αἷμα τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου ἐκ τῆς χειρός σου.
Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
ὄτι ἐργᾷ τὴν γῆν, καὶ οὐ προσθήσει τὴν ἰσχὺν αὐτῆς δοῦναί σοι. στένων καὶ τρέμων ἔσῃ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.
When you till the ground, it will no longer yield its produce to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”
καὶ εἶπεν Κάιν πρὸς τὸν κύριον Μείζων ἡ αἰτία μου τοῦ ἀφεθῆναί με.
But Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment (note: Or guilt or sin) is greater than I can bear.
εἰ ἐκβαλεῖς με σήμερον ἀπὸ προσώπου τῆς γῆς, καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ προσώπου σου κρυβήσομαι, καὶ ἔσομαι στένων καὶ τρέμων ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· καὶ πᾶς ὁ εὑρίσκων με ἀποκτενεῖ με.
Behold, this day You have driven me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I will be hidden; I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
καὶ εἶπεν οὐτῶ Κύριος ὁ θεός Οὐχ οὕτως· πᾶς ὁ ἀποκτείνας Κάιν ἑπτὰ ἐκδικούμενα παραλύσει. καὶ ἔθετο κύριος ὁ θεὸς σῃμεῖον τῷ Κάιν τοῦ μὴ ἀνελεῖν αὐτὸν πάντα τὸν εὑρίσκοντα αὐτόν.
“Not so (note: LXX, Vulgate, and Syriac; Hebrew “Very well!” or “Therefore:”)!” replied the LORD. “If anyone slays Cain, then Cain will be avenged sevenfold.” And the LORD placed a mark on Cain, so that no one who found him would kill him.
ἐξῆλθεν δὲ Κάιν ἀπὸ προσώπου τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ᾤκησεν ἐν γῇ Ναὶδ κάτεναντι Ἔδεμ.
So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod (note: Nod means wandering.), east of Eden.
Καὶ ἔγνω Κάιν τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ, καὶ συλλαβοῦσα ἔτεκεν τὸν Ἑνώχ. καὶ ἦν οἰκοδομῶν πόλιν· καὶ ἐπωνόμασεν τὴν πόλιν ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ Ἐνώχ.
And Cain had relations with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain built a city and named it after his son Enoch.
ἐγενήθη δὲ τῷ Ἑνῶχ Γαιδάδ, καὶ Γαιδὰδ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Μαιήλ, καὶ Μαιὴλ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Μαθουσαλά, καὶ Μαθουσαλὰ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Λάμεχ.
Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methusael, and Methusael was the father of Lamech.
καὶ ἔλαβεν ἑαυτῷ Λάμεχ δύο γυναῖκας· ὄνομα τῇ μιᾷ Ἀδά, καὶ ὄνομα τῇ δευτέρᾳ Σέλλα.
And Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.
καί ἔτεκεν Ἄδα τὸν Ἰωβέλ· οὗτος ἦν ὁ πατὴρ οἰκούντων ἐν σκηναῖς κτηνοτρόφων.
Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and raise livestock.
καὶ ὄνομα τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ Ἰουβάλ· οὗτος ἦν ὁ καταδείξας ψαλτήριον καὶ κιθάραν.
And his brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute.
Σελλὰ δὲ ἔτεκεν καὶ αὐτὴ τὸν Θόβελ· καὶ ἦν σφυροκόπος χαλκεὺς χαλκοῦ καὶ σιδήρου. ἀδελφὴ δὲ Θόβελ Νοεμά.
And Zillah gave birth to Tubal-cain, a forger of every implement of bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
εἶπεν δὲ Λάμεχ ταῖς ἑαυτοῦ Ἄδα καὶ Σέλλα, ἀκούσατέ μου τῆς φωνῆς· γυναῖκες Λάμεχ, ἐνωτίσασθέ μου τοὺς λόγους· ὅτι ἄνδρα ἀπέκτεινα εἰς τραῦμα ἐμοί, καὶ νεανίσκον εἰς μώλωπα ἐμοί·
Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my speech. For I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me.
ὅτι ἑπτάκις ἐκδεδίκηται ἐκ Κάιν, ἐκ δὲ Λάμεχ ἑβδομηκοντάκις ἑπτά,
If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold (note: Hebrew; LXX can be translated as either seventy times seven or seventy-sevenfold; see also Matthew 18:22.).”
Ἔγνω δὲ Ἀδὰμ Εὕαν τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ, καὶ συλλαβοῦσα ἔτεκεν υἱόν. καὶ ἐπωνόμασεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Σὴθ λέγουσα Ἐξανέστησεν γάρ μοι ὁ θεὸς σπέρμα ἕτερον ἀντὶ Ἅβελ, ὃν ἀπέκτεινεν Κάιν.
And Adam again had relations with his wife, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth (note: Seth probably means granted or appointed.), saying, “God has granted me another seed in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”
καὶ τῷ Σὴθ ἐγένετο υἱός, ἐπωνόμασεν δὲ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἐνώς· οὗτος ἤλπισεν ἐπικαλεῖσθαι τὸ ὄνομα κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ.
And to Seth also a son was born, and he called him Enosh. At that time men began to call upon (note: Or to proclaim; some translators to invoke or to call themselves by or to profane) the name of the LORD.
