Und Adam erkannte sein Weib Eva, und sie ward schwanger und gebar den Kain und sprach: Ich habe einen Mann gewonnen mit dem HErrn.
And Adam had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain (note: Cain sounds like the Hebrew for acquired or brought forth.). “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man,” she said.
Und sie fuhr fort und gebar Abel, seinen Bruder. Und Abel ward ein Schäfer; Kain aber ward ein Ackermann.
Later she gave birth to Cain’s brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, while Cain was a tiller of the soil.
Es begab sich aber nach etlicher Zeit, dass Kain dem HErrn Opfer brachte von den Früchten des Feldes;
So in the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruit of the soil as an offering to the LORD,
und Abel brachte auch von den Erstlingen seiner Herde und von ihrem Fett. Und der HErr sah gnädig an Abel und sein Opfer;
while Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
aber Kain und sein Opfer sah er nicht gnädig an. Da ergrimmte Kain sehr, und seine Gebärde verstellte sich.
but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell.
Da sprach der HErr zu Kain: Warum ergrimmst du? und warum verstellt sich deine Gebärde?
“Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “and why has your countenance fallen?
Ist's nicht also? Wenn du fromm bist, so bist du angenehm; bist du aber nicht fromm, so ruht die Sünde vor der Tür, und nach dir hat sie Verlangen; du aber herrsche über sie.
If you (note: Or it desires to control you) do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.”
Da redete Kain mit seinem Bruder Abel. Und es begab sich, da sie auf dem Felde waren, erhob sich Kain wider seinen Bruder Abel und schlug ihn tot.
Then Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.
Da sprach der HErr zu Kain: Wo ist dein Bruder Abel? Er sprach: Ich weiß nicht; soll ich meines Bruders Hüter sein?
And the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I do not know!” he answered. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
Er aber sprach: Was hast du getan? Die Stimme des Bluts deines Bruders schreit zu mir von der Erde.
“What have you done?” replied the LORD. “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.
Und nun verflucht seist du auf der Erde, die ihr Maul hat aufgetan und deines Bruders Blut von deinen Händen empfangen.
Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
Wenn du den Acker bauen wirst, soll er dir hinfort sein Vermögen nicht geben. Unstet und flüchtig sollst du sein auf Erden.
When you till the ground, it will no longer yield its produce to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”
Kain aber sprach zu dem HErrn: Meine Sünde ist größer, denn dass sie mir vergeben werden möge.Wörtlich: Meine Sünde ist zu groß, als dass ich sie tragen könnte.
But Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment (note: Or guilt or sin) is greater than I can bear.
Siehe, du treibst mich heute aus dem Lande, und ich muss mich vor deinem Angesicht verbergen und muss unstet und flüchtig sein auf Erden. So wird mir's gehen, dass mich totschlage, wer mich findet.
Behold, this day You have driven me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I will be hidden; I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
Aber der HErr sprach zu ihm: Nein; sondern wer Kain totschlägt, das soll siebenfältig gerächt werden. Und der HErr machte ein Zeichen an Kain, dass ihn niemand erschlüge, wer ihn fände.
“Not so (note: LXX, Vulgate, and Syriac; Hebrew “Very well!” or “Therefore:”)!” replied the LORD. “If anyone slays Cain, then Cain will be avenged sevenfold.” And the LORD placed a mark on Cain, so that no one who found him would kill him.
Also ging Kain von dem Angesicht des HErrn und wohnte im Lande Nod, jenseit Eden, gegen Morgen.
So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod (note: Nod means wandering.), east of Eden.
Und Kain erkannte sein Weib, die ward schwanger und gebar den Henoch. Und er baute eine Stadt, die nannte er nach seines Sohnes Namen Henoch.
And Cain had relations with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain built a city and named it after his son Enoch.
Henoch aber zeugte Irad, Irad zeugte Mahujael, Mahujael zeugte Methusael, Methusael zeugte Lamech.
Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methusael, and Methusael was the father of Lamech.
Lamech aber nahm zwei Weiber; eine hieß Ada, die andere Zilla.
And Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.
Und Ada gebar Jabal; von dem sind hergekommen, die in Hütten wohnten und Vieh zogen.
Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and raise livestock.
Und sein Bruder hieß Jubal; von dem sind hergekommen die Geiger und Pfeifer.
And his brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute.
Die Zilla aber gebar auch, nämlich den Thubalkain, den Meister in allerlei Erz- und Eisenwerk. Und die Schwester des Thubalkain war Naema.
And Zillah gave birth to Tubal-cain, a forger of every implement of bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
Und Lamech sprach zu seinen Weibern Ada und Zilla: Ihr Weiber Lamechs, höret meine Rede und merket, was ich sage: Ich habe einen Mann erschlagen für meine Wunde und einen Jüngling für meine Beule;
Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my speech. For I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me.
Kain soll siebenmal gerächt werden, aber Lamech siebenundsiebzigmal.
If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold (note: Hebrew; LXX can be translated as either seventy times seven or seventy-sevenfold; see also Matthew 18:22.).”
Adam erkannte abermals sein Weib, und sie gebar einen Sohn, den hieß sie Seth; denn Gott hat mir, sprach sie, einen andern Samen gesetzt für Abel, den Kain erwürgt hat.
And Adam again had relations with his wife, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth (note: Seth probably means granted or appointed.), saying, “God has granted me another seed in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”
Und Seth zeugte auch einen Sohn und hieß ihn Enos. Zu der Zeit fing man an, zu predigen von des HErrn Namen.
And to Seth also a son was born, and he called him Enosh. At that time men began to call upon (note: Or to proclaim; some translators to invoke or to call themselves by or to profane) the name of the LORD.
