Ἐγένετο δὲ μετὰ δύο ἔτη ἡμερῶν Φαραὼ ἴδεν ἐνύπνιον. ᾤετο ἑστάναι ἐπὶ τοῦ ποταμοῦ,
After two full years had passed, Pharaoh had a dream: He was standing beside the Nile,
καὶ ἰδοὺ ὥσπερ ἐκ τοῦ ποταμοῦ ἀνέβαινον ἑπτὰ βόες καλαὶ τῷ εἴδει καὶ ἐκλεκταὶ ταῖς σαρξίν, καἰ ἐβόσκοντο ἐν τῷ ἄχει·
when seven cows, sleek and well-fed, came up from the river and began to graze among the reeds.
ἂλλαι δὲ ἑπτὰ βόες ἀνέβαινον μετὰ ταύτας ἐκ τοῦ ποταμοῦ, αἰσχραὶ τῷ εἴδει καὶ λεπταὶ ταῖς σαρξίν, Καὶ ἐνέμοντο αἱ βόες παρὰ τὸ χεῖλος τοῦ ποταμοῦ ἐν τῷ ἄχει·
After them, seven other cows, sickly and thin, came up from the Nile and stood beside the well-fed cows on the bank of the river.
καὶ κατέφαγον αἱ ἑπτὰ βόες αἱ αἰσχραὶ καὶ λεπταὶ ταῖς σαρξὶν τὰς ἑπτὰ βόας τὰς καλὰς τῷ εἴδει καὶ τὰς ἐκλεκτάς. ἠγέρθη δὲ Φαραώ,
And the cows that were sickly and thin devoured the seven sleek, well-fed cows. Then Pharaoh woke up,
καὶ ἐνυπνιάσθη τὸ δεύτερον· καὶ ἰδοὺ ἑπτὰ στάχυες ἀνέβαινον ἐν πυθμένι ἑνί, ἐκλεκτοὶ καὶ καλοί·
but he fell back asleep and dreamed a second time: Seven heads of grain, plump and ripe, came up on one stalk.
ἂλλοι δὲ ἑπτὰ στάχυες λεπτοὶ καὶ καὶἀνεμόΦοροι ἀνεφύοντο μετ’ αὐτούς·
After them, seven other heads of grain sprouted, thin and scorched by the east wind.
καὶ κατέπιον οἱ ἑπτὰ στάχυες οἱ λεπτοὶ καὶ ἀνεμόΦΘοροι τοὺς ἑπτὰ στάχυας τοὺς ἐκλεκτοὺς καὶ τοὺς πλήρεις. ἠγέρθη δὲ Φαραώ. καὶ ἦν ἐνύπνιον.
And the thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven plump, ripe ones. Then Pharaoh awoke and realized it was a dream.
ἐγένετο δὲ πρωὶ καὶ ἐταράχθη ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἀποστείλας ἐκάλεσεν ἐκάλεσεν πάντας τοὺς ἐξηγητὰς Αἰγύπτου καὶ πάντας τοὺς σοφοὺς αὐτῆς, καὶ διηγήσατο αὐτοῖς Φαραὼ τὸ ἐνύπνιον· καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ ἀπαγγέλλων αὐτὸ τῷ Φαραώ.
In the morning his spirit was troubled, so he summoned all the magicians and wise men of Egypt. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them for him.
καὶ ἐλάλησεν ὁ ἀρχιοινοχόος πρὸς Φαραὼ λέγων τὴν ἁμαρτίαν μου ἀναμιμνήσκω σήμερον.
Then the chief cupbearer said to Pharaoh, “Today I recall my failures.
Φαραὼ ὠργίσθη τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔθετο ἡμᾶς ἐν φυλακῆ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ ἀρχιδεσμοφύλακος, ἐμέ τε καὶ τὸν ἀρχισιτοποιόν·
Pharaoh was once angry with his servants, and he put me and the chief baker in the custody of the captain of the guard.
καὶ ἴδομεν ἐνύπνιον ἐν νυκτὶ μιᾷ, ἐγὼ καὶ αὐτός· ἕκαστος κατὰ τὸ αὐτοῦ ἐνύπνιον ἴδομεν.
One night both the chief baker and I had dreams, and each dream had its own meaning.
ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ μεθ’ ἡμῶν νεανίσκος παῖς Ἐβραῖος τοῦ ἀρχιμαγείρου, καὶ διηγησάμεθα αὐτῷ, καὶ συνέκρινεν ἡμῖν.
Now a young Hebrew was there with us, a servant of the captain of the guard. We told him our dreams and he interpreted them for us individually.
ἐγενήθη δὲ καθὼς συνέκρινεν ἡμῖν, οὕτως καὶ συνέβη, ἐμέ τε ἀποκατασταθῆναι ἐπὶ τὴν ἀρχήν μου, ἐκεῖνον δὲ κρεμασθῆναι.
And it happened to us just as he had interpreted: I was restored to my position, and the other man was hanged.”
Ἀποστείλας δὲ Φαραὼ ἐκάλεσεν τὸν Ἰωσήφ, καὶ ἐξήγαγεν αὐτὸν ἐκ τοῦ ὀχυρώματος. ·καὶ ἐξύρησαν αὐτὸν καὶ ἤλλαξαν τὴν στολὴν αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἦλθεν πρὸς
So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, who was quickly brought out of the dungeon. After he had shaved and changed his clothes, he went in before Pharaoh.
εἶπεν δὲ Φαραὼ τῷ Ἰωσήφ Ἐνύπνιον ἑώρακα, καὶ ὁ συγκρίνων αὐτὸ οὐκ ἒστιν. ἐγὼ δὲ ἀκήκοα περὶ σοῦ λεγόντων, ἀκούσαντά σε ἐνύπνια συγκρῖναι αὐτά.
Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.”
ἀποκριθείς δὲ Ἰωσὴφ τῷ Φαραὼ εἶπεν Ἄνευ τοῦ θεοῦ οὐκ ἀποκριθήσεται τὸ σωτήριον Φαραώ.
“I myself cannot do it,” Joseph replied, “but God will give Pharaoh a sound answer.”
ἐλάλησεν δὲ Φαραὼ τῷ Ἰωσὴφ λέγων Ἐν τῷ ὕπνῳ μου ᾤμην ἑστάναι ἐπὶ τὸ χεῖλος τοῦ ποταμοῦ·
Then Pharaoh said to Joseph: “In my dream I was standing on the bank of the Nile,
καὶ ὢσπερ ἐκ τοῦ ποταμοῦ ἀνέβαινον ἑπτὰ βόες καλαὶ τῷ εἴδει καὶ ἐκλεκταὶ ταῖς σαρξίν, καὶ ἐνέμοντο ἐν τῷ ἄχει·
when seven cows, well-fed and sleek, came up from the river and began to graze among the reeds.
καὶ ἰδοὺ ἑπτὰ βόες ἕτεραι ἀνέβαινον ὀπίσω αὐτῶν ἐκ τοῦ ποταμοῦ, πονηραὶ καὶ αἰσχραὶ τῷ εἴδει καὶ λεπταὶ ταῖς καὶ ἐνέμοντο ἐν τῷ ἄχει· οἵας οὐκ εἶδον τοιαύτας ἐν ὅλῃ αἰσχροτέρας·
After them, seven other cows—sickly, ugly, and thin—came up. I have never seen such ugly cows in all the land of Egypt!
καὶ κατέφαγον αἱ ἑπτὰ βόες αἱ αἰσχραὶ καὶ λεπταὶ τὰς ἑπτὰ βόας τὰς πρώτας τὰς καλὰς καὶ ἐκλεκτάς,
Then the thin, ugly cows devoured the seven well-fed cows that were there first.
καὶ εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὰς κοιλίας αὐτῶν· καὶ οὐ διάδηλοι ἐγένοντο ὅτι εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὰς κοιλίας αὐτῶν, καὶ αἱ ὄψεις αὐτῶν αἰσχραὶ καθὰ καὶ τὴν ἀρχήν. ἐξεγερθεὶς δὲ ἐκοιμήθην.
When they had devoured them, however, no one could tell that they had done so; their appearance was as ugly as it had been before. Then I awoke.
καὶ ἴδον πάλιν ἐν τῷ ὕπνῳ μου, καὶ ὥσπερ ἑπτὰ στάχυες ἀνέβαινον ἐν πυθμένι ἑνὶ πλήρεις καὶ καλοί·
In my dream I also saw seven heads of grain, plump and ripe, growing on a single stalk.
ἂλλοι δὲ ἑπτὰ στάχυες λεπτοὶ καὶ ἀνεμόΦθοροι ἀνεφύοντο ἐχόμενοι αὐτῶν·
After them, seven other heads of grain sprouted—withered, thin, and scorched by the east wind.
καὶ κατέπιον οἱ ἑπτὰ στάχυες οἱ λεπτοὶ καὶ ἀνεμόΦθοροι τοὺς ἑπτὰ στάχυας τοὺς καλοὺς καὶ τοὺς πλήρεις. εἶπα οὖν τοῖς καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ ἀπαγγέλλων μοι.
And the thin heads of grain swallowed the seven plump ones. I told this dream to the magicians, but no one could explain it to me.”
καὶ εἶπεν ἸωσὴΦ τῷ Τὸ ἐνύπνιον Φαραὼ ἕν ἐστιν· ὅσα ὁ θεὸς ποιεῖ, ἔδειξεν τῷ Φαραώ.
At this, Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dreams of Pharaoh are one and the same. God has revealed to Pharaoh what He is about to do.
αἰ ἑπτὰ βόες αἱ καλαὶ ἑπτὰ ἔτη ἐστίν, καὶ οἱ ἑπτὰ στάχυες οἱ καλοὶ ἑπτὰ ἣ ἐστίν· τὸ ἐνύπνιον Φαραὼ ἕν ἐστιν.
The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven ripe heads of grain are seven years. The dreams have the same meaning.
καὶ αἱ ἑπτὰ βόες αἱ λεπταὶ αἱ ἀναβαίνουσαι ὀπίσω αὐτῶν ἑπτὰ ἔτη ἐστίν, καὶ οἱ ἑπτὰ στάχυες οἱ λεπτοὶ καὶ ἀνεμόφθοροι ἔσονται ἑπτὰ ἔτη λιμοῦ.
Moreover, the seven thin, ugly cows that came up after them are seven years, and so are the seven worthless heads of grain scorched by the east wind—they are seven years of famine.
τὸ δὲ ῥῆμα ὃ εἴρηκα Φαραώ· ὃσα ὁ θεὸς ποιεῖ ἔδειξεν τῷ Φαραώ.
It is just as I said to Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do.
ἰδοὺ ἑπτὰ ἔτη ἔρχεται εὐθηνία πολλὴ ἐν πάσῃ γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ·
Behold, seven years of great abundance are coming throughout the land of Egypt,
ἣξει δὲ ἑπτὰ ἔτη λιμοῦ μετὰ ταῦτα, καὶ ἐπιλησθήσονται τῆς πλησμονῆς ἐν ὃλῃ τῇ γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ, καὶ ἀναλώσει ὁ λιμὸς τὴν γῆν·
but seven years of famine will follow them. Then all the abundance in the land of Egypt will be forgotten, and the famine will devastate the land.
κῚ οὐκ ἡ εὐθηνία ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἀπὸ τοῦ λιμοῦ τοῦ μετὰ ταῦτα, ἰσχυρὸς γὰρ ἔσται σφόδρα.
The abundance in the land will not be remembered, since the famine that follows it will be so severe.
περὶ δὲ τοῦ δευτερῶσαι τὸ ἐνύπνιον Φαραὼ δίς, ὅτι ἀληθὲς ἱστᾶι τὸ ῥῆμα τὸ παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ ταχυνεῖ ὁ θεὸς τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτό.
Moreover, because the dream was given to Pharaoh in two versions, the matter has been decreed by God, and He will carry it out shortly.
νῦν οὖν σκέψαι ἄνθρωπον φρό· νιμον καὶ συνετόν, καὶ κατάστησον αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς Αἰγύπτου.
Now, therefore, Pharaoh should look for a discerning and wise man and set him over the land of Egypt.
καὶ ποιησάτω Φαραὼ καὶ καταστησάτω τοπάρχας ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, καὶ ἀποπεμπτωσάτωσαν πάντα τὰ γενήματα τῆς γῆς Αἰγύπτου τῶν ἑπτὰ ἐτῶν τῆς εὐθηνίας,
Let Pharaoh take action and appoint commissioners over the land to take a fifth of the harvest (note: See LXX; MT a fifth from the land) of Egypt during the seven years of abundance.
καὶ συναγαγ‘́τωσαν πάντα τὰ βρώματα τῶν ἑπτὰ ἐτῶν τῶν ἐρχομένων τῶν καλῶν τούτων· καὶ συναχθήτω ὁ σῖτος ὑπὸ χεῖρα Φαραώ, βρώματα ἐν ταῖς πόλεσιν συναχθήτω.
Under the authority of Pharaoh, let them collect all the excess food from these good years, that they may come and lay up the grain to be preserved as food in the cities.
καὶ ἔσται τὰ βρώματα πεφυλαγμένα τῆ γῇ εἰς τὰ ἑπτὰ ἔτη τοῦ λιμοῦ ἃ ἔσονται ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ καὶ οὐκ ἐκτριβήσεται ἡ γῆ ἐν τῷ λιμῷ.
This food will be a reserve for the land during the seven years of famine to come upon the land of Egypt. Then the country will not perish in the famine.”
Ἢρεσεν δὲ τὰ ῥήματα ἐναντίον Φαραὼ καὶ ἐναντίον πάντων τῶν παίδων αὐτοῦ·
This proposal pleased Pharaoh and all his officials.
καὶ εἶπεν Φαραὼ πᾶσιν τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ Μὴ εὑρήσομεν ἄνθρωπον τοιοῦτον, ὃς ὦι πνεῦμα θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῶ ;
So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find anyone like this man, in whom the Spirit of God (note: Or the spirit of the gods) abides?”
εἶπεν δὲ Φαραὼ τῷ Ἰωσήφ Ἐπειδὴ ἔδειξεν ὁ θεός σοι πάντα ταῦτα, οὐκ ἔστιν ἄνθρωπος φρονιμώτερός σου καὶ συνετώτερος.
Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one as discerning and wise as you.
σὺ ἔσῃ ἐπὶ τῶ οἴκῳ μου, καὶ ἐπὶ τῷ στόματί σου ὑπακούσεται πᾶς ὁ λαός μου· πλὴν τὸν θρόνον ὑπερέξω σου ἐγώ.
You shall be in charge of my house, and all my people are to obey your commands. Only with regard to the throne will I be greater than you.”
εἶπεν δὲ Φαραὼ τῷ ἸςσήΦ ἰδοὺ καθίστημί σε σήμερον ἐπὶ πάσης γῆς Αἰγύπτου.
Pharaoh also told Joseph, “I hereby place you over all the land of Egypt.”
καἰ περιελόμενος Φαραὼ τὸν δακτύλιον ἀπὸ τῆς χειρὸς αὐτοῦ περιέθηκεν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὴν χεῖρα ἸωσήΦ, καὶ ἐνέδυσεν αὐτὸν στολὴν βυσ σίνην, καὶ περιέθηκεν κλοιὸν χρυσοῦν περὶ τὸν τράχηλον αὐτοῦ·
Then Pharaoh removed the signet ring from his finger, put it on Joseph’s finger, clothed him in garments of fine linen, and placed a gold chain around his neck.
καὶ ἀνεβίβασεν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸ ἅρμα τὸ δεύτερον τῶν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐκήρυξεν ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ κήρυξ. καὶ κατέστησεν αὐτὸν ἐφ’ ὅλης τῆς γῆς Αἰγύπτου.
He had Joseph ride in his second chariot, with men calling out before him, “Bow the knee (note: That is, “Abrek,” probably an Egyptian word that sounds similar to the Hebrew for kneel)!” So he placed him over all the land of Egypt.
εἶπεν δὲ Φαραὼ τῷ Ἰωσήφ Ἐγὼ Φαραώ· ἄνευ σοῦ οὐκ ἐξαρεῖ οὐθεὶς τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πάσῃ γῇ Αἰγύπτου.
And Pharaoh declared to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, but without your permission, no one in all the land of Egypt shall lift his hand or foot.”
καἰ Φαραὼ τὸ ὄνομα Ἰωσὴφ ψουθομΦανήχ. καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ τὴν θυγατέρα ΠετρεΦῆ ἱερέως Ἡλίου πόλεως αὐτῷ εἰς γυναῖκα.
Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-paneah (note: Zaphenath-paneah probably means Revealer of Mysteries or God speaks and lives.), and he gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On (note: That is, Heliopolis, as in LXX; also in verse 50), to be his wife. And Joseph took charge of all the land of Egypt.
Ἰωσὴφ δὲ ἦν ἐτῶν τριάκοντα ὅτε ἒστη ἐναντίον Φαραὼ βασιλέως Αἰγύπτου. ἐξῆλθεν δὲ Ἰωσὴφ ἐκ προσώπου Φαραώ, καὶ πᾶσαν γῆν Αἰγύπτου.
Now Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph left Pharaoh’s presence and traveled throughout the land of Egypt.
καὶ ἐποίησεν ἢ γῆ ἐν τοῖς ἑπτὰ ἐπτὰ τῆς εὐθηνίας δράγματα.
During the seven years of abundance, the land brought forth bountifully.
καὶ συνήγαγεν πόντα τὰ βρώματα τῶν ἑπτὰ ἐτῶν ἐν οἶς ἢη ἡ εὐθηνία ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτου, καὶ ἔθηκεν τὰ βρώματα ἐν ταῖς πόλεσιν. βρώματα τῶν πεδίων τῆς πόλεως πόλεως κύκλῳ αὐτῆς *Ων ἒθηκεν ἐν αὐτῇ.
During those seven years, Joseph collected all the excess food in the land of Egypt and stored it in the cities. In every city he laid up the food from the fields around it.
καὶ συνήγηεν ἸωσὴΦ σῖτον ὡσεὶ τὴν ἄμμον τῆς θαλάσσης πολὺ σφόδρα, ἕως οὐκ ἠδύνατο ἀριθμῆσαι· οὐ γὰρ ἢν ἀριθμός.
So Joseph stored up grain in such abundance, like the sand of the sea, that he stopped keeping track of it; for it was beyond measure.
τῷ δὲ ἸωςὴΦ ἐγένοντο υἱοὶ δύο πρὸ τοῦ ἐλθεῖν τὰ ἑπτὰ ερρ; τοῦ λιμοῦ, οὓς ἔτεκεν αὐτῷ Ἀσεννὲθ θυγάτηρ ΙΙετρεΦῆ ἱερέως Ἡλίου ΙΙόλεως.
Before the years of famine arrived, two sons were born to Joseph by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.
ἐκάλεσεν δὲ ἸωσὴΦ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ πρωτοτόκου Μαννασσὴ λέγων Ὃτι ἐπιλαθέσθαι με ἐποίησεν ὁ θεὸς πάντων τῶν πόνων μου καὶ πόντων τῶν τοῦ πατρός μου·
Joseph named the firstborn Manasseh (note: Manasseh sounds like the Hebrew for making to forget.), saying, “God has made me forget all my hardship and all my father’s household.”
τὸ δὲ ὄνομα τοῦ δεῦ. τέρου ἐκάλεσεν ἘΦράιἲμ, Ὃτι ὕψωσέν με ὁ θεὸς ἐν γῇ ταπεινώσεως μου.
And the second son he named Ephraim (note: Ephraim sounds like the Hebrew for making fruitful or twice fruitful.), saying, “God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”
ΙΙαρῆλθον δὲ τὰ ἑπτὰ ἔτη τῆς εὐθηνίας ἃ ἐγένετο ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ,
When the seven years of abundance in the land of Egypt came to an end,
καὶ ἤρξαντο τὰ ἑπτὰ ἴτη τοῦ λιμοῦ ἔρχεσθαι, καθὰ εἶπεν καὶ ἐγένετο λιμὸς ἐν πόσῃ τῇ γῇ· ἐν δὲ πάσῃ γῇ Αἰγύπτου οὐκ ἦσαν ἂρτοι.
the seven years of famine began, just as Joseph had said. And although there was famine in every country, there was food throughout the land of Egypt.
καὶ ἐπείνασεν πᾶσα ἡ γῆ Αἰγύπτου, ἐκέκραξεν δὲ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς πρὸς Φαραὼ περὶ ἄρτων· εἶπεν δὲ Φαραὼ πᾶσι τοῖς Αἰγυ πτίοις ΙΙορεύεσθε πρὸς ἸωσήΦ, καὶ ὃ ἐὰν εἲπη ὑμῖν ποιήσατε.
When extreme hunger came to all the land of Egypt and the people cried out to Pharaoh for food, he told all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph and do whatever he tells you.”
καὶ ὁ λιμὸς ἦν ἐπὶ προσώπου πόσης τῆς γῆς· ἀνέῳξεν δὲ ἸωσἠΦ πάντας τοὺς σιτοβολῶνας, καὶ ἐπώλει πᾶσι τοῖς Αἰγυπτίοις.
When the famine had spread over all the land, Joseph opened up all the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians; for the famine was severe in the land of Egypt.
καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ χῶραι ἦλθον εἰς Αἴγυπτον πρὸς ἸωσήΦ. ἐπεκρότησεν γὰρ ὁ λιμὸς ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ.
And every nation came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain, because the famine was severe over all the earth.
