Ἐγένετο δὲ μετὰ τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα ἥμαρτεν ὁ ἀρχιοινοχόος τοῦ βασιλέως Αἰγύπτου καὶ ὁ ἀρχισιτοποιὸς τῷ κυρίῳ αὐτῶν βασιλεῖ Αἰγύπτου.
Some time later, the king’s cupbearer and baker offended their master, the king of Egypt.
καὶ ὠργίσθη Φαραὼ ἐπὶ τοῖς δυσὶν εὐνούχοις αὐτοῦ, ἐπὶ τῷ ἀρχιοινοχόῳ καὶ ἐπὶ τῷ ἀρχισιτοποιῷ·
Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker,
καὶ ἔθετο αὐτοὺς ἐν φυλακῇ παρὰ τῷ ἀρχιδεσμοφύλακι εἰς τὸ δεσμωτήριον, εἰς τὸν τόπον οὗ Ἰωσὴφ ἀπῆκτο ἐκεῖ.
and imprisoned them in the house of the captain of the guard, the same prison where Joseph was confined.
καὶ συνέστησεν ὁ ἀρχιδεσμώτης τῷ Ἰωσὴφ αὐτούς, καὶ παρέστη αὐτοῖς· ἦσαν δὲ ἡμέρας ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ.
The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he became their personal attendant. After they had been in custody for some time,
καὶ ἴδον ἀμφότεροι ἐνύπνιον, ἑκάτερος ἐνύπνιον ἐν μιᾷ νυκτί, ὃεασις τοῦ ἐνυπνίου αὐτοῦ, ὁ ἀρχιοινοχόος καὶ ὁ ἀρχισιτοποιὸς οἳ ἦσαν τῶ βασιλεῖ Αἰγύπτου, οἱ ὄντες ἐν τῷ δεσμωτηρίῳ.
both of these men—the Egyptian king’s cupbearer and baker, who were being held in the prison—had a dream on the same night, and each dream had its own meaning.
εἰσῆλθεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτοὺς τὸ πρωὶ Ἰωσήφ, καὶ ἴδεν αὐτοὺς καὶ ἦσαν τεταραγμένοι.
When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they were distraught.
καὶ ἠρώτα τοὺς εὐνούχους Φαραώ, οἳ ἦσαν μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῆ φυλακῇ παρὰ τῷ κυρίῳ αὐτοῦ, λέγων Τί ὃτι τὰ πρόσωπα ὑμῶν σκυθρωπὰ σήμερον ;
So he asked the officials of Pharaoh who were in custody with him in his master’s house, “Why are your faces so downcast today?”
οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ἐνύπνιον ἴδομεν, καὶ ὁ συγκρίνων αὐτὸ οὐκ ἔστιν. εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἰωσήφ οὐχὶ διὰ τοῦ θεοῦ ἡ διασάφησις αὐτῶν ἐστίν ; διηγήσασθε οὖν μοι.
“We both had dreams,” they replied, “but there is no one to interpret them.” Then Joseph said to them, “Don’t interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”
καὶ διηγήσατο ὁ ἀρχιοινοχόος τὸ ἐνύπνιον αὐτοῦ τῷ ἸωσὴΦ καὶ εἶπεν Ἐν τῷ ὕπνῳ μου ἢν ἄμπελος ἐναντίον μου.
So the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream: “In my dream there was a vine before me,
ἐν ἐν δὲ τῇ ἀμπέλῳ τρεῖς πυθμένες, καὶ αὐτὴ θάλλουσα ἀνενηνοχυῖα βλαστούς· πέπειροι οἱ βότρυες σταφυλῆς.
and on the vine were three branches. As it budded, its blossoms opened and its clusters ripened into grapes.
καὶ τὸ ποτήριον Φαραὼ ἐν τῇ χειρί μου· καὶ ἔλαβον τὴν σταφυλὴν καὶ ἐξέθλιψα αὐτὴν εἰς τὸ πωήριον, καὶ ἔδωκα τὸ ποτήριον εἰς τὰς χεῖρας Φαραώ.
Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into his cup, and placed the cup in his hand.”
καὶ εῖπεν αὐτῷ ’ιωσήφ τοῦτο ἡ σύγκρισις αὐτοῦ. οἱ τρεῖς πυθμένες τρεῖς ἡ εἰσίν·
Joseph replied, “This is the interpretation: The three branches are three days.
ἒτι τρεῖς ἡμέραι καὶ μνησθήσεται Φαραὼ τῆς ἀρχῆς σου, καὶ ἀποκαταστήσει σε ἐπὶ τὴν ἀρχιοινοχοίαν σου, καὶ δώσεις τὸ ποτήριον Φαραὼ εἰς τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ κατὰ τὴν ἀρχήν σου τὴν προτέραν, ὡς ἦσθα οἰνοχοῶν·
Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore your position. You will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you did when you were his cupbearer.
ἀλλὰ μνήσθητί μου διὰ σεαυτοῦ ὅταν εὖ σοι γένηται, καὶ ἐμοὶ ἔλεος, καὶ μνησθήσῃ περὶ ἐμοῦ Φαραώ, καὶ ἐξάξεις με ἐκ τοῦ ὀχυρώματος τούτου·
But when it goes well for you, please remember me and show me kindness by mentioning me to Pharaoh, that he might bring me out of this prison.
ὃτι κλοπῇ ἐκλάπην ἐκ γῆς Ἐβραίων, καὶ οὐκ οὐκ ἐποίησα οὐδέν, ἀλλ’ ἐνέβαλόν με εἰς τὸν λάκκον τοῦτον.
For I was kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing for which they should have put me in this dungeon.”
καὶ ἴδεν ὁ ἀρχισιτοποιὸς ὅτι ὀρθῶς συνέκρινεν, καὶ εἶπεν τῷ Ἰωσήφ κἀγὼ ἴδον ἐνύπνιον, καὶ ᾤμην τρία κανᾶ χονδριτῶν αἴρειν ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς μου·
When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was favorable, he said to Joseph, “I too had a dream: There were three baskets of white bread on my head.
ἐν δὲ τῷ κανῷ τῷ ἐπάνω ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν γενημάτων ὦν ὁ βασιλεὺς Φαραὼ ἐσθίει, ἔργον σιτοποιοῦ· καὶ τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ κατήσθιεν αὐτὰ ἀπὸ τοῦ κανοῦ τοῦ ἐπάνω τῆς κεφαλῆς μου.
In the top basket were all sorts of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.”
ἀποκριυεὶς δὲ ἸωσὴΦ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Αὕτη ἡ σύγκρισις αὐτοῦ. τὰ τρία κανᾶ τρεῖς ἡμέραι εἰσίν·
Joseph replied, “This is the interpretation: The three baskets are three days.
ἒτι τριῶν ἡμερῶν ἀφελεῖ Φαραὼ τὴν κεφαλήν σου ἀπὸ σοῦ, καὶ κρεμάσει σε ἐπὶ ξύλου, καὶ φάγεται τὰ ὄρνεα τοῦ οὐρανοῦ τὰς σάρκας σου ἀπὸ σοῦ.
Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and hang you on a tree (note: Or and impale you on a pole; similarly in verse 22). Then the birds will eat the flesh of your body.”
ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῆ τρίτη ἡμέρα γενέσεως ἦν Φαραώ. καὶ ἐποίει πότον πᾶσι τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ. καὶ ἐμνήσθη τῆς ἀρχῆς τοῦ ἀρχιοινοχόου καὶ τῆς ἀρχῆς τοῦ ἀρχισιτοποιοῦ ἐν μέσῳ τῶν παίδων αὐτοῦ.
On the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, he held a feast for all his officials, and in their presence he lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker.
καὶ ἀπεκατέστησεν τὸν ἀρχιοινοχόον ἐπὶ τὴν ἀρχὴν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔδωκεν τὸ ποτήριον εἰς τὴν χεῖρα Φαραώ.
Pharaoh restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.
τὀν δὲ ἀρχισιτοποιὸν ἐκρέμασεν, καθὰ συνέκρινεν αὐτοῖς ἸωσήΦ.
But Pharaoh hanged the chief baker, just as Joseph had described to them in his interpretation.
οὐκ ἐμνήσθη δὲ ὁ ἀρχιοινοχόος τοῦ ἸςσήΦ, ἀλλὰ αὐτοῦ.
The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot all about him.
