Ἀναβλέψας δὲ Ἰακὼβ ἴδεν, καὶ ἰδοὺ Ἠσαὺ ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ ἐρχόμενος, αὐτὸς καὶ τετρακόσιοι ἄνδρες μετ’ αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐπιδιεῖλεν Ἰακὼβ τὰ παιδία ἐπὶ Λείαν καὶ ἐπὶ Ῥαχὴλ καὶ τὰς δύο
Now Jacob looked up and saw Esau coming toward him with four hundred men. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maidservants.
καὶ ἐποίησεν τὰς δύο παιδίσκας καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐΤῶν ἐν πρώτοις, Λείαν καὶ τὰ παιδία αὐτῆς ὀπίσω, καὶ Ῥαχὴλ καὶ ’ι
He put the maidservants and their children in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph at the rear.
αὐτὸς δὲ παρῆλθεν ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν· καὶ προσεκύνησεν ἐπὶ ἑπτάκις ἕως τοῦ ἐγγίσαι τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ.
But Jacob himself went on ahead and bowed to the ground seven times as he approached his brother.
καὶ Ἠσαὺ εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτῷ, καὶ περιλαβὼν αὐτὸν ἐφίλησεν καὶ ποσέπεσεν ἐσὲν ἐπὶ τὸν τράχηλον αὐτοῦ· κα ἔκλαυσαν ἀμφότεροι.
Esau, however, ran to him and embraced him, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him. And they both wept.
καὶ ἀναβλέψας ἴδεν τὰς γυναῖκας καὶ τὰ παιδία, καὶ εἶπεν Τί ταῦτά σοί ἐστιν ; ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Τὰ παιδία οἷς ἠλέησεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν παῖδά σου.
When Esau looked up and saw the women and children, he asked, “Who are these with you?” Jacob answered, “These are the children God has graciously given your servant.”
καὶ προσήηισαν αἱ παιδίσκαι καὶ τὰ παιδία αὐτῶν, καὶ
Then the maidservants and their children approached and bowed down.
καὶ προσήγγισεν Λεία καὶ τὰ τέκνα αὐτῆς, καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ποσήγγισεν Ῥαχὴλ καὶ Ἰωσήφ, καὶ προσεκύνησαν.
Leah and her children also approached and bowed down, and then Joseph and Rachel approached and bowed down.
καὶ εἶπεν Τί ταῦτά σοί ἐστιν, πᾶσαι αἱ παρεμβολαὶ αὗται αἷς ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Ἵνα εὕρῃ ὁ παῖς σου χάριν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου,
“What do you mean by sending this whole company to meet me?” asked Esau. “To find favor in your sight, my lord,” Jacob answered.
δὲ Ἠσαύ Ἔστιν μοι πολλά, ἀδελφέ· ἔστω σοι τὰ σά.
“I already have plenty, my brother,” Esau replied. “Keep what belongs to you.”
εἶπεν ἑ Ἰακώβ Εἰ εὕρηκα χάριν ἐναντίον σου, δέξαι τὰ δῶρα διὰ τῶν ἐμῶν χειρῶν. ἕνεκεν τούτου ἴδον τὸ πρόσωπόν σου ὡς ἄν τις ἴδοι πρόσωπον θεοῦ, καὶ εὐδοκήσεις με·
But Jacob insisted, “No, please! If I have found favor in your sight, then receive this gift from my hand. For indeed, I have seen your face, and it is like seeing the face of God, since you have received me favorably.
λάβε τὰς εὐλογίας μου ἃς ἤνεγκά σοι, ἠλέησέν με ὁ θεὸς καὶ ἔστιν μοι πάντα. καὶ ἐβιάσατο αὐτόν, καὶ ἔλαβεν.
Please accept my gift (note: Or blessing or treaty of peace) that was brought to you, because God has been gracious to me and I have all I need.” So Jacob pressed him until he accepted.
καὶ εἶπεν Ἀπάραντες πορευθῶμεν ἐπ’ εὐθεῖαν.
Then Esau said, “Let us be on our way, and I will go ahead of you.”
εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Ὁ κύριός μου γινώσκει ὅτι τὰ παιδία ἁπαλώτερα, καὶ τὰ πρόβατα καὶ αἱ βόες λοχεύονται ἐπ’ ἐμέ· ἐὰν οὖν καταδιώξω αὐτοὺς ἡμέραν μίαν, ἀποθανοῦνται πάντα τὰ κτήνη.
But Jacob replied, “My lord knows that the children are frail, and I must care for sheep and cattle that are nursing their young. If they are driven hard for even a day, all the animals will die.
προελθάτω ὁ μου ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ παιδός· ἐγὼ δὲ ἐνισχύσω ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ κατὰ σχολὴν τῆς πορεύσεως τῆς ἐναντίον μου καὶ κατὰ πόδα τῶν παιδαρίων, ἕως τοῦ με ἐλθεῖν πρὸς τὸν κύριόν μου εἰς
Please let my lord go ahead of his servant. I will continue on slowly, at a comfortable pace for the livestock and children, until I come to my lord at Seir.”
εἶπεν δὲ Ἠσαύ Καταω μετὰ σοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ λαοῦ τοῦ μετ’ ἐμοῦ. ὁ δέ εἶπεν Ἵνα τί τοῦτο ; ἱκανὸν ὅτι εὗρον χάριν ἐναντίον σου, κύριε.
“Let me leave some of my people with you,” Esau said. But Jacob replied, “Why do that? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.”
ἀπέστρεψεν δὲ Ἠσαὺ ἐν, τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ εἰς τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ εἰς Σηείρ.
So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir,
καὶ Ἰακὼβ ἀπαίρει εἰς Σκηνὰς· καὶ ἐποίησεν αὐτῷ ἐκεῖ οἰκίας, καὶ τοῖς κτήνεσιν αὐτοῦ ἐποίησεν σκηνάς· διὰ τοῦτο ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου Σκηναί.
but Jacob went on to Succoth (note: Succoth means booths or shelters or tabernacles; twice in this verse.), where he built a house for himself and shelters for his livestock; that is why the place was called Succoth.
Καὶ ἦλθεν Ἰακὼβ εἰς Σαλήμ πόλιν Σικίμων, ἥ ἐστιν ἐν γῇ Χαναὰν, ὅτε ἦλθεν ἐκ τῆς Μεσοποταμίας Συρίας. καὶ παρενέβαλεν κατὰ πρόσωπον τῆς πόλεως.
After Jacob had come from Paddan-aram (note: That is, northwest Mesopotamia), he arrived safely at the city of Shechem in the land of Canaan, and he camped just outside the city.
καὶ ἐκτήσατο τὴν μερίδα τοῦ ἀγροῦ, οὗ ἔστησεν ἐκεῖ τὴν σκηνὴν αὐτοῦ, παρὰ Ἑμμὼρ πατρὸς Συχὲμ ἑκατὸν ἀμνῶν·
And the plot of ground where he pitched his tent, he purchased from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of silver (note: Hebrew a hundred kesitahs; the value or weight of the kesitah is no longer known).
καὶ ἔστησεν ἐκεῖ θυσιαστήριον καὶ ἐπεκαλέσατο τὸν θεὸν Ἰσραήλ.
There he set up an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel.
