And he called the name of the place Massah (note: that is, Temptation), and Meribah (note: That is, Chiding, or, strife), because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, Is the Lord among us, or not?
He named the place Massah (note: Massah means testing.) and Meribah (note: Meribah means quarreling.) because the Israelites quarreled, and because they tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?”
