Lorsque Yahweh, ton Dieu, t'aura fait entrer dans le pays dont tu vas prendre possession, et qu'il aura chassé devant toi beaucoup de nations, les Héthéens, les Gergéséens, les Amorrhéens, les Chananéens, les Phéréséens, les Hévéens et les Jébuséens, sept nations plus nombreuses et plus puissantes que toi,
When the LORD your God brings you into the land that you are entering to possess, and He drives out before you many nations—the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, seven nations larger and stronger than you—
et que Yahweh, ton Dieu, te les aura livrées et que tu les auras battues, tu les dévoueras par anathème, tu ne concluras pas d'alliance avec elles et tu ne leur feras point grâce.
and when the LORD your God has delivered them over to you to defeat them, then you must devote them to complete destruction. Make no treaty (note: Forms of the Hebrew berit are translated in most passages as covenant.) with them and show them no mercy.
Tu ne contracteras point de mariage avec elles, tu ne donneras point tes filles à leurs fils, et tu ne prendras point leurs filles pour tes fils ;
Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons,
car elles détourneraient de marcher après moi tes fils, qui serviraient d'autres dieux ; la colère de Yahweh s'enflammerait contre vous, et il te détruirait promptement.
because they will turn your sons away from following Me to serve other gods. Then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and He will swiftly destroy you.
Mais voici comment vous agirez à leur égard : Vous renverserez leurs autels, vous briserez leurs stèles, vous abattrez leurs aschérim et vous livrerez au feu leurs images taillées.
Instead, this is what you are to do to them: tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, cut down their Asherah poles, and burn their idols in the fire.
Car tu es un peuple saint à Yahweh, ton Dieu. Yahweh, ton Dieu, t'a choisi pour être son peuple particulier, parmi tous les peuples qui sont sur la face de la terre.
For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His prized possession out of all peoples on the face of the earth.
Si Yahweh s'est attaché à vous et vous a choisis, ce n'est pas que vous surpassiez en nombre tous les peuples, car vous êtes le plus petit de tous les peuples.
The LORD did not set His affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than the other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.
Mais, parce que Yahweh vous aime et parce qu'il a voulu tenir le serment qu'il avait fait à vos pères, Yahweh vous a fait sortir par sa main puissante et vous a rachetés de la maison de servitude, de la main de Pharaon, roi d'Egypte.
But because the LORD loved you and kept the oath He swore to your fathers, He brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
Sache donc que c'est Yahweh, ton Dieu, qui est Dieu, le Dieu fidèle qui garde l'alliance et la miséricorde jusqu'à mille générations, pour ceux qui l'aiment et qui gardent ses commandements.
Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps His covenant of loving devotion for a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.
Mais il rend la pareille en face à ceux qui le haïssent, en les faisant périr ; il ne tarde point à l'égard de celui qui le hait, et il lui rend la pareille en face.
But those who hate Him He repays to their faces with destruction; He will not hesitate to repay to his face the one who hates Him.
C'est pourquoi tu observeras les commandements, les lois et les ordonnances que je te prescris aujourd'hui, en les mettant en pratique.
So keep the commandments and statutes and ordinances that I am giving you to follow this day.
Si vous écoutez ces ordonnances, si vous les gardez et les mettez en pratique, en retour Yahweh, ton Dieu, gardera envers toi l'alliance et la miséricorde qu'il a jurées à tes pères.
If you listen to these ordinances and keep them carefully, then the LORD your God will keep His covenant and the loving devotion that He swore to your fathers.
Il t'aimera, te bénira et te multipliera ; il bénira le fruit de tes entrailles et le fruit de ton sol, ton blé, ton vin nouveau et ton huile, les portées de tes vaches et les petits de tes brebis, sur la terre qu'il a juré à tes pères de te donner.
He will love you and bless you and multiply you. He will bless the fruit of your womb and the produce of your land—your grain, new wine, and oil, the young of your herds and the lambs of your flocks—in the land that He swore to your fathers to give you.
Tu seras béni plus que tous les peuples ; il n'y aura chez toi ni homme ni femme stérile, ni bête stérile parmi tes troupeaux.
You will be blessed above all peoples; among you there will be no barren man or woman or livestock.
Yahweh éloignera de toi toute maladie ; il ne t'enverra aucune de ces affections malignes d'Egypte que tu connais ; mais il en affligera tous ceux qui te haïssent.
And the LORD will remove from you all sickness. He will not lay upon you any of the terrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but He will inflict them on all who hate you.
Tu dévoreras tous les peuples que Yahweh, ton Dieu, va te livrer ; ton œil sera sans pitié pour eux, et tu ne serviras point leurs dieux, car ce serait un piège pour toi.
You must destroy all the peoples the LORD your God will deliver to you. Do not look on them with pity. Do not worship their gods, for that will be a snare to you.
Que si tu dis dans ton cœur : « Ces nations sont plus nombreuses que moi ; comment pourrai-je les chasser ? »
You may say in your heart, “These nations are greater than we are; how can we drive them out?”
Ne les crains point ; rappelle à ton souvenir ce que Yahweh, ton Dieu, a fait à Pharaon et à toute l'Egypte :
But do not be afraid of them. Be sure to remember what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh and all Egypt:
les grandes épreuves que tes yeux ont vues, les miracles et les prodiges, la main forte et le bras étendu, par lesquels Yahweh, ton Dieu, t'a fait sortir : ainsi fera Yahweh, ton Dieu, à tous les peuples dont tu as peur.
the great trials that you saw, the signs and wonders, and the mighty hand and outstretched arm by which the LORD your God brought you out. The LORD your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.
Yahweh, ton Dieu, enverra même sur eux les frelons, jusqu'à ce que soient détruits ceux qui auront pu échapper et se cacher devant toi.
Moreover, the LORD your God will send the hornet against them until even the survivors hiding from you have perished.
Tu ne t'effraieras point à cause d'eux ; car Yahweh, ton Dieu, est au milieu de toi, Dieu grand et terrible !
Do not be terrified by them, for the LORD your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God.
Yahweh, ton Dieu, chassera peu à peu ces nations devant toi ; tu ne pourras pas les exterminer promptement, de peur que les bêtes sauvages ne se multiplient contre toi.
The LORD your God will drive out these nations before you little by little. You will not be enabled to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals would multiply around you.
Yahweh, ton Dieu, te les livrera, et il jettera parmi elles une grande consternation, jusqu'à ce qu'elles soient détruites.
But the LORD your God will give them over to you and throw them into great confusion, until they are destroyed.
Il livrera leurs rois entre tes mains et tu feras disparaître leurs noms de dessous les cieux ; personne ne tiendra devant toi, jusqu'à ce que tu les aies détruits.
He will hand their kings over to you, and you will wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand against you; you will annihilate them.
Vous consumerez par le feu les images taillées de leurs dieux ; tu ne convoiteras point l'argent ou l'or qui est sur elles, et tu ne le prendras point pour toi, de peur qu'il ne te soit un piège ; car il est en abomination à Yahweh, ton Dieu.
You must burn up the images of their gods; do not covet the silver and gold that is on them or take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared by it; for it is detestable to the LORD your God.
Tu n'introduiras point une chose abominable dans ta maison, afin que tu ne sois pas, comme elle, dévoué par anathème ; tu l'auras en horreur extrême, tu l'auras en extrême abomination, car c'est une chose dévouée par anathème.
And you must not bring any detestable thing into your house, or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction. You are to utterly detest and abhor it, because it is set apart for destruction.
