Then the high priest asked Stephen, “Are these charges true?”
Etienne répondit : " Mes frères et mes pères, écoutez. Le Dieu de gloire apparut à notre père Abraham, lorsqu'il était en Mésopotamie, avant qu'il vint demeurer à Haran,
And Stephen declared: “Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,
et lui dit : " Quitte ton pays et ta famille, et va dans le pays que je te montrerai. "
and told him, ‘Leave you (note: Genesis 12:1)r country and your kindred and go to the land I will show you.’
Alors il quitta le pays des Chaldéens et s'établit à Haran. De là, après la mort de son père, Dieu le fit émigrer dans ce pays que vous habitez maintenant.
So Abraham left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. After his father died, God brought him out of that place and into this land where you are now living.
Et il ne lui donna aucune propriété dans ce pays, pas même où poser le pied ; mais il lui promit, à une époque où le patriarche n'avait pas d'enfants, de lui en donner la possession, à lui et à sa postérité après lui.
He gave him no inheritance here, not even a foot of ground. But God promised to give possession of the land to Abraham and his descendants, even though he did not yet have a child.
Dieu parla ainsi : " Sa postérité habitera en pays étranger ; on la réduira en servitude, et on la maltraitera pendant quatre cents ans.
God told him that his descendants would be foreigners in a strange land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years.
Mais la nation qui les aura tenus en esclavage, c'est moi qui la jugerai, dit le Seigneur. Après quoi ils sortiront et me serviront en ce lieu. " —
‘But I will punish the nation that enslaves them,’ God said, ‘and afterward they will come forth and worship Me in this place (note: Genesis 15:13–14; Exodus 3:12).’
Puis il donna à Abraham l'alliance de la circoncision ; et ainsi Abraham après avoir engendré Isaac le circoncit le huitième jour ; Isaac engendra et circoncit Jacob, et Jacob les douze patriarches.
Then God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision, and Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day. And Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.
Poussés par la jalousie, les patriarches vendirent Joseph pour être emmené en Egypte. Mais Dieu était avec lui,
Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph, they sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with him
et il le délivra de toutes ses épreuves, et lui donna grâce et sagesse devant Pharaon, roi d'Egypte, qui le mit à la tête de l'Egypte et de toute sa maison.
and rescued him from all his troubles. He granted Joseph favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt, who appointed him ruler over Egypt and all his household.
Or il survint une famine dans tout le pays d'Egypte et dans celui de Chanaan. La détresse était grande, et nos pères ne trouvaient pas de quoi se nourrir.
Then famine and great suffering swept across Egypt and Canaan, and our fathers could not find food.
Jacob, ayant appris qu'il y avait des vivres en Egypte, y envoya nos pères une première fois.
When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our fathers on their first visit.
Et la seconde fois, Joseph fut reconnu par ses frères, et Pharaon sut quelle était son origine.
On their second visit, Joseph revealed his identity to (note: Or Joseph was made known to or Joseph was recognized by) his brothers, and his family became known to Pharaoh.
Alors Joseph envoya chercher son père Jacob et toute sa famille, composée de soixante-quinze personnes.
Then Joseph sent for his father Jacob and all his relatives, seventy-five in all.
Et Jacob descendit en Egypte, où il mourut, ainsi que nos pères.
So Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our fathers died.
Et ils furent transportés à Sichem, et déposés dans le sépulcre qu'Abraham avait acheté à prix d'argent des fils d'Hémor, à Sichem.
Their bones were carried back (note: Literally And they were carried back) to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a price he paid in silver.
Comme le temps approchait où devait s'accomplir la promesse que Dieu avait jurée à Abraham, le peuple s'accrut et se multiplia en Egypte,
As the time drew near for God to fulfill His promise to Abraham, our people in Egypt increased greatly in number.
jusqu'à ce que parut dans ce pays un autre roi qui n'avait pas connu Joseph.
Then another king, who knew nothing of Joseph, arose over Egypt.
Ce roi, usant d'artifice envers notre race, maltraita nos pères, au point de leur faire exposer leurs enfants, afin qu'ils ne vécussent pas.
He exploited our people and oppressed our fathers, forcing them to abandon their infants so they would die.
A cette époque naquit Moïse, qui était beau aux yeux de Dieu ; il fut nourri trois mois dans la maison de son père.
At that time Moses was born, and he was beautiful in the sight of God (note: Or he was of great status in God’s eyes or he was no ordinary child). For three months he was nurtured in his father’s house.
Et quand il eut été exposé, la fille de Pharaon le recueillit et l'éleva comme son fils.
When he was set outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him and brought him up as her own son.
Moïse fut instruit dans toute la sagesse des Egyptiens, et il était puissant en paroles et en œuvres.
So Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action.
Quand il eut atteint l'âge de quarante ans, il lui vint dans l'esprit de visiter ses frères, les enfants d'Israël.
When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.
Il en vit un qu'on outrageait ; prenant sa défense, il vengea l'opprimé en tuant l'Egyptien.
And when he saw one of them being mistreated, Moses went to his defense and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian who was oppressing him.
Or il pensait que ses frères comprendraient que Dieu leur accordait la délivrance par sa main ; mais ils ne le comprirent pas.
He assumed his brothers would understand that God was using him to deliver them, but they did not.
Le jour suivant, en ayant rencontré deux qui se battaient, il les exhorta à la paix en disant : " Hommes, vous êtes frères : pourquoi vous maltraiter l'un l'autre ? "
The next day he came upon two Israelites who were fighting, and he tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why are you mistreating each other?’
Mais celui qui maltraitait son prochain le repoussa, en disant : " Qui t'a établi chef et juge sur nous ?
But the man who was abusing his neighbor pushed Moses aside and said, ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us?
Veux-tu me tuer, comme tu as tué hier l'Egyptien ? "
Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday (note: Exodus 2:13–14 (see also LXX))?’
A cette parole, Moïse s'enfuit et alla habiter dans la terre de Madian, où il engendra deux fils.
At this remark, Moses fled to the land of Midian, where he lived as a foreigner and had two sons.
Quarante ans après, au désert du mont Sinaï, un ange lui apparut dans la flamme d'un buisson en feu.
After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai.
A cette vue, Moïse fut saisi d'étonnement, et comme il s'approchait pour examiner, la voix du Seigneur se fit entendre [à lui] :
When Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight. As he approached to look more closely, the voice of the Lord came to him:
" Je suis le Dieu de tes pères, le Dieu d'Abraham, d'Isaac et de Jacob. " — Et Moïse tout tremblant n'osait regarder.
‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (note: Exodus 3:6).’ Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.
Alors le seigneur lui dit : " Ote la chaussure de tes pieds, car le lieu que tu foules est une terre sainte.
Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.
J'ai vu l'affliction de mon peuple qui est en Egypte, j'ai entendu ses gémissements, et je suis descendu pour le délivrer. Viens donc maintenant et je t'enverrai en Egypte. " —
I have indeed seen the oppression of My people in Egypt (note: Exodus 3:5–10). I have heard their groaning and have come down to deliver them. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’
Ce Moïse qu'ils avaient renié en disant : Qui t'a établi chef et juge ? c'est lui que Dieu a envoyé comme chef et libérateur, avec l'assistance de l'ange qui lui était apparu dans le buisson.
This Moses, whom they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge (note: Exodus 2:14)?’ is the one whom God sent to be their ruler and redeemer through the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
C'est lui qui les a fait sortir, en opérant des prodiges et des miracles dans la terre d'Egypte, dans la mer Rouge et au désert pendant quarante ans.
He led them out and performed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, at the Red Sea, and for forty years in the wilderness.
C'est ce Moïse qui dit aux enfants d'Israël : " Dieu vous suscitera d'entre vos frères un prophète comme moi [ : écoutez-le]. "
This is the same Moses who told the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers (note: Deuteronomy 18:15).’
C'est lui qui, au milieu de l'assemblée, au désert, conférant avec l'ange qui lui parlait sur le mont Sinaï, et avec nos pères, a reçu des oracles vivants pour nous les transmettre.
He was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. And he received living words to pass on to us (note: NE and WH to you).
Nos pères, loin de vouloir lui obéir, le repoussèrent, et, retournant de cœur en Egypte,
But our fathers refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.
ils dirent à Aaron : " Fais-nous des dieux qui marchent devant nous ; car ce Moïse qui nous a fait sortir du pays d'Egypte, nous ne savons ce qu'il est devenu. "
They said to Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us! As for this Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him (note: Exodus 32:1).’
Ils fabriquèrent alors un veau d'or, et ils offrirent un sacrifice à l'idole et se réjouirent de l'œuvre de leurs mains.
At that time they made a calf and offered a sacrifice to the idol, rejoicing in the works of their hands.
Mais Dieu se détourna et les livra au culte de l'armée du ciel, selon qu'il est écrit au livre des prophètes : " M'avez-vous offert des victimes et des sacrifices pendant quarante ans au désert, maison d'Israël... ?
But God turned away from them and gave them over to the worship of the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: ‘Did you bring Me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
Vous avez porté la tente de Moloch et l'astre de votre dieu Raiphan, ces images que vous avez faites pour les adorer ! C'est pourquoi je vous transporterai au delà de Babylone. " —
You have taken along the tabernacle of Molech and the star of your god Rephan, the idols you made to worship. Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Babylon (note: Amos 5:25–27 (see also LXX)).’
Nos pères dans le désert avaient le tabernacle du témoignage, comme l'avait ordonné celui qui dit à Moïse de le construire selon le modèle qu'il avait vu.
Our fathers had the tabernacle of the Testimony with them in the wilderness. It was constructed exactly as God had directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen.
L'ayant reçu de Moïse, nos pères l'apportèrent, sous la conduite de Josué, lorsqu'ils firent la conquête du pays sur les nations que Dieu chassa devant eux, et il y subsista jusqu'aux jours de David.
And our fathers who received it brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations God drove out before them. It remained until the time of David,
Ce roi trouva grâce devant Dieu, et demanda d'élever une demeure pour le Dieu de Jacob.
who found favor in the sight of God and asked to provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob (note: SBL, WH, BYZ, and TR; see also LXX for Psalm 132:5; ECM and NE a dwelling place for the house of Jacob.).
Néanmoins ce fut Salomon qui lui bâtit un temple.
But it was Solomon who built the house for Him.
Mais le Très-Haut n'habite pas dans les temples faits de main d'homme, selon la parole du prophète :
However, the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands. As the prophet says:
" Le ciel est mon trône, et la terre l'escabeau de mes pieds. Quelle demeure me bâtirez-vous, dit le Seigneur, ou quel sera le lieu de mon repos ?
‘Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool. What kind of house will you build for Me, says the Lord, or where will My place of repose be?
N'est-ce pas ma main qui a fait toutes ces choses ? " —
Has not My hand made all these things (note: Isaiah 66:1–2)?’
Hommes à la tête dure, incirconcis de cœur et d'oreilles, vous résistez toujours au Saint-Esprit ; tels furent vos pères, tels vous êtes.
You stiff-necked people with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit, just as your fathers did.
Quel prophète vos pères n'ont-ils pas persécuté ? Ils ont même tué ceux qui annonçaient d'avance la venue du Juste ; et vous, aujourd'hui, vous l'avez trahi et mis à mort.
Which of the prophets did your fathers fail to persecute? They even killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One. And now you are His betrayers and murderers—
Vous qui avez reçu la Loi, en considération des anges qui vous l'intimaient, et vous ne l'avez pas gardée !... "
you who received the law ordained by angels, yet have not kept it.”
En entendant ces paroles, la rage déchirait leurs cœurs, et ils grinçaient des dents contre lui.
On hearing this, the members of the Sanhedrin were enraged, and they gnashed their teeth at him.
Mais Etienne, qui était rempli de l'Esprit-Saint, ayant fixé les yeux au ciel, vit la gloire de Dieu, et Jésus debout à la droite de son Père.
But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
Et il dit : " Voici que je vois les cieux ouverts, et le Fils de l'homme debout à la droite de Dieu. "
“Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
Les Juifs poussèrent alors de grands cris, en se bouchant les oreilles, et se jetèrent tous ensemble sur lui.
At this they covered their ears, cried out in a loud voice, and rushed together at him.
Et l'ayant entraîné hors de la ville, ils le lapidèrent. Les témoins déposèrent leurs vêtements aux pieds d'un jeune homme nommé Saul.
They dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile the witnesses laid their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.
Pendant qu'ils le lapidaient, Etienne priait en disant : " Seigneur Jésus, recevez mon esprit ! "
While they were stoning him, Stephen appealed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
Puis s'étant mis à genoux, il s'écria d'une voix forte : " Seigneur, ne leur imputez pas ce péché. " Après cette parole, il s'endormit [dans le Seigneur]. Or, Saul avait approuvé le meurtre d'Etienne.
Falling on his knees, he cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
