Les apôtres et les frères qui étaient dans la Judée apprirent que les Gentils avaient aussi reçu la parole de Dieu.
The apostles and brothers throughout Judea soon heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.
Et lorsque Pierre fut remonté à Jérusalem, les fidèles de la circoncision lui adressèrent des reproches,
So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers took issue with him
en disant : " Tu es entré chez des incirconcis, et tu as mangé avec eux ! "
and said, “You visited uncircumcised men and ate with them.”
Pierre, prenant la parole, se mit à leur exposer, d'une manière suivie, ce qui s'était passé.
But Peter began and explained to them the whole sequence of events:
" J'étais en prière, dit-il, dans la ville de Joppé, et j'eus, en extase, une vision : un objet semblable à une grande nappe, tenue par les quatre coins, descendait du ciel et venait jusqu'à moi.
“I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision of something like a large sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came right down to me.
Fixant les yeux sur cette nappe, je la considérai, et j'y vis les quadrupèdes de la terre, les bêtes sauvages, les reptiles et les oiseaux du ciel.
I looked at it closely and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles, and birds of the air.
J'entendis aussi une voix qui me disait : " Lève-toi, Pierre ; tue et mange. —
Then I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Get up, Peter, kill and eat.’
Je répondis : " Oh non, Seigneur, car jamais rien de profane et d'impur n'est entré dans ma bouche. —
‘No, Lord,’ I said, ‘for nothing impure (note: Literally common; similarly in verse 9) or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’
Pour la seconde fois une voix se fit entendre du ciel : Ce que Dieu a déclaré pur, ne l'appelle pas profane. —
But the voice spoke from heaven a second time, ‘Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.’
Cela arriva par trois fois ; puis tout fut retiré dans le ciel.
This happened three times, and everything was drawn back up into heaven.
Au même instant trois hommes se présentèrent devant la maison où nous étions ; on les avait envoyés de Césarée vers moi.
Just then three men sent to me from Caesarea stopped at the house where I was staying.
L'Esprit me dit de partir avec eux sans hésiter. Les six frères que voici m'accompagnèrent, et nous entrâmes dans la maison de Corneille.
The Spirit told me to accompany them without hesitation. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s home.
Cet homme nous raconta comment il avait vu dans sa maison l'ange se présenter à lui, en disant : Envoie à Joppé, et fais venir Simon, surnommé Pierre ;
He told us how he had seen an angel standing in his house and saying, ‘Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter.
il te dira des paroles par lesquelles tu seras sauvé, toi et toute ta maison. —
He will convey to you a message by which you and all your household will be saved.’
Lorsque j'eus commencé à leur parler, l'Esprit-Saint descendit sur eux, comme sur nous au commencement.
As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, just as He had fallen upon us at the beginning.
Et je me souvins de cette parole du Seigneur : Jean a baptisé dans l'eau ; mais vous, vous serez baptisés dans l'Esprit-Saint. —
Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit (note: Or ‘John baptized in water, but in a few days you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit.’ Acts 1:5).’
Si donc Dieu leur a donné la même grâce qu'à nous, qui avons cru au Seigneur Jésus-Christ, qui étais-je, moi, pour pouvoir m'opposer à Dieu ! "
So if God gave them the same gift He gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to hinder the work of God?”
Ayant entendu ce discours, ils se calmèrent, et ils glorifièrent Dieu en disant : " Dieu a donc accordé aussi aux Gentils la pénitence, afin qu'ils aient la vie. "
When they heard this, they had no further objections, and they glorified God, saying, “So then, God has granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life.”
Cependant ceux qui avaient été dispersés par la persécution survenue à l'occasion d'Etienne, allèrent jusqu'en Phénicie, dans l'île de Chypre et à Antioche, n'annonçant la parole à personne si ce n'est aux seuls Juifs.
Meanwhile those scattered by the persecution that began with Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the message only to Jews.
Il y eut cependant parmi eux quelques hommes de Chypre et de Cyrène qui, étant venus à Antioche, s'adressèrent aussi aux Grecs, et leur annoncèrent le Seigneur Jésus.
But some of them, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began speaking to the Greeks (note: Or the Hellenists) as well, proclaiming the good news about the Lord Jesus.
Et la main du Seigneur était avec eux, et un grand nombre de personnes crurent et se convertirent au Seigneur.
The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.
Le bruit en étant venu aux oreilles des fidèles de l'Eglise de Jérusalem, ils envoyèrent Barnabé jusqu'à Antioche.
When news of this reached the ears of the church in Jerusalem, they sent Barnabas to Antioch.
Lorsqu'il fut arrivé et qu'il eut vu la grâce de Dieu, il s'en réjouit, et il les exhorta tous à demeurer d'un cœur ferme dans le Seigneur.
When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced and encouraged them all to abide in the Lord with all their hearts.
Car c'était un homme de bien rempli de l'Esprit-Saint, et de foi. Et une foule assez considérable se joignit au Seigneur.
Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.
Barnabé se rendit ensuite à Tarse pour chercher Saul, et l'ayant trouvé, il l'amena à Antioche.
Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul,
Or, il advint que, pendant une année entière, ils tinrent des réunions dans cette église et instruisirent une multitude nombreuse. Ce fut ainsi à Antioche que, pour la première fois, les disciples reçurent le nom de Chrétiens.
and when he found him, he brought him back to Antioch. So for a full year they met together with the church and taught large numbers of people. The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch.
En ces jours-là, des prophètes vinrent de Jérusalem à Antioche.
In those days some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.
L'un d'eux, nommé Agabus, s'étant levé, annonça par l'Esprit qu'il y aurait sur toute la terre une grande famine ; elle eut lieu, en effet, sous Claude.
One of them named Agabus stood up and predicted through the Spirit that a great famine would sweep across the whole world (note: Or the entire Roman world). (This happened under Claudius.)
Les disciples décidèrent d'envoyer, chacun selon ses moyens, un secours aux frères qui habitaient la Judée :
So the disciples, each according to his ability, decided to send relief to the brothers living in Judea.
ce qu'ils firent. Ce secours fut envoyé aux Anciens par les mains de Barnabé et de Saul.
This they did, sending their gifts to the elders with Barnabas and Saul.
