Il y avait à Césarée un homme nommé Corneille, centurion dans la cohorte Italique,
At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was called the Italian Regiment.
Religieux et craignant Dieu, ainsi que toute sa maison, il faisait beaucoup d'aumônes au peuple et priait Dieu sans cesse.
He and all his household were devout and God-fearing. He gave generously to the people and prayed to God regularly.
Dans une vision, vers la neuvième heure du jour, il vit clairement un ange de Dieu qui entra chez lui et lui dit : " Corneille ! "
One day at about the ninth hour (note: That is, about three in the afternoon; also in verse 30), he had a clear vision of an angel of God who came to him and said, “Cornelius!”
Fixant les yeux sur l'ange et saisi d'effroi, il s'écria : " Qu'est-ce, Seigneur ? " L'ange lui répondit : " Tes prières et tes aumônes sont montées devant Dieu comme un mémorial.
Cornelius stared at him in fear and asked, “What is it, Lord?” The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have ascended as a memorial offering before God.
Et maintenant envoie des hommes à Joppé, et fais venir un certain Simon, surnommé Pierre ;
Now send men to Joppa to call for a man named Simon who is called Peter.
il est logé chez un corroyeur, appelé Simon, dont la maison est située auprès de la mer. "
He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea.”
L'ange qui lui parlait étant parti, Corneille appela deux de ses serviteurs et un soldat pieux parmi ceux qui étaient attachés à sa personne,
When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among his attendants.
et après leur avoir tout raconté, il les envoya à Joppé.
He explained what had happened and sent them to Joppa.
Le jour suivant, comme les messagers étaient en route et qu'ils s'approchaient de la ville, Pierre monta sur le toit, vers la sixième heure, pour prier.
The next day at about the sixth hour (note: That is, about noon), as the men were approaching the city on their journey, Peter went up on the roof to pray.
Puis, ayant faim, il désirait manger. Pendant qu'on lui préparait son repas, il tomba en extase :
He became hungry and wanted something to eat, but while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.
il vit le ciel ouvert, et quelque chose en descendre, comme une grande nappe, attachée par les quatre coins et s'abaissant vers la terre ;
He saw heaven open and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners.
à l'intérieur se trouvaient tous les quadrupèdes et les reptiles de la terre, et les oiseaux du ciel.
It contained all kinds of four-footed animals and reptiles of the earth, as well as birds of the air.
Et une voix lui dit : " Lèvre-toi, Pierre ; tue et mange. "
Then a voice said to him: “Get up, Peter, kill and eat!”
Pierre répondit : " Oh ! non, Seigneur, car jamais je n'ai rien mangé de profane ni d'impur. "
“No, Lord!” Peter answered. “I have never eaten anything impure (note: Literally common; similarly in verses 15 and 28) or unclean.”
Et une voix lui parla de nouveau : " Ce que Dieu a déclaré pur, ne l'appelle pas profane. "
The voice spoke to him a second time: “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”
Cela se fit par trois fois, et aussitôt après la nappe fut retirée dans le ciel.
This happened three times, and all at once the sheet was taken back up into heaven.
Or Pierre cherchait en lui-même ce que pouvait signifier la vision qu'il avait eue, et voici que les hommes envoyés par Corneille, s'étant informés de la maison de Simon, se présentèrent à la porte ;
While Peter was puzzling over the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found Simon’s house and approached the gate.
et ayant appelé, ils demandèrent si c'était là qu'était logé Simon, surnommé Pierre.
They called out to ask if Simon called Peter was staying there.
Et comme Pierre était à réfléchir sur la vision, l'Esprit lui dit : " Voici trois hommes qui te cherchent.
As Peter continued to reflect on the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are looking for you (note: ECM and TR; NE and WH two men are looking for you; SBL and BYZ men are looking for you).
Lève-toi, descends et pars avec eux sans crainte, car c'est moi qui les ai envoyés. "
So get up! Go downstairs and accompany them without hesitation, because I have sent them.”
Aussitôt Pierre descendit vers eux : " Je suis, leur dit-il, celui que vous cherchez, quel est le motif qui vous amène ? "
So Peter went down to the men (note: TR the men sent to him by Cornelius) and said, “Here am I, the one you are looking for. Why have you come?”
Ils répondirent : " Le centurion Corneille, homme juste et craignant Dieu, à qui toute la nation juive rend témoignage, a été averti par un ange saint de te faire venir dans sa maison et d'écouter tes paroles. "
“Cornelius the centurion has sent us,” they said. “He is a righteous and God-fearing man with a good reputation among the whole Jewish nation. A holy angel instructed him to request your presence in his home so he could hear a message from you.”
Pierre les fit donc entrer et les logea. Le lendemain, s'étant levé, il partit avec eux, et quelques-uns des frères de Joppé l'accompagnèrent.
So Peter invited them in as his guests. And the next day he got ready and went with them, accompanied by some of the brothers from Joppa.
Ils entrèrent à Césarée le jour suivant. Corneille les attendait, et il avait invité ses parents et ses amis intimes.
The following day he arrived in Caesarea, where Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends.
Quand Pierre entra, Corneille alla au-devant de lui, et tombant à ses pieds il se prosterna.
As Peter was about to enter, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet to worship him.
Mais Pierre le releva en disant : " Lève-toi ; moi aussi je suis un homme. "
But Peter helped him up. “Stand up,” he said, “I am only a man myself.”
Et tout en s'entretenant avec lui, il entra et trouva beaucoup de personnes réunies.
As Peter talked with him, he went inside and found many people gathered together.
Il leur dit : " Vous savez qu'il est défendu à un Juif de se lier avec un étranger ou d'entrer chez lui ; mais Dieu m'a appris à ne regarder aucun homme comme souillé ou impur.
He said to them, “You know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with a foreigner or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean.
Aussi suis-je venu sans hésitation, dès que vous m'avez envoyé chercher. Je vous prie donc de me dire pour quel motif vous m'avez fait venir. "
So when I was invited, I came without objection. I ask, then, why have you sent for me?”
Corneille répondit : " Il y a en ce moment quatre jours que je jeûnais et priais dans ma maison à la neuvième heure ; tout à coup parut devant moi un homme revêtu d'une robe éclatante, qui me dit :
Cornelius answered: “Four days ago I was in my house praying at this, the ninth hour (note: BYZ and TR Four days ago I was fasting until this hour, and at the ninth hour I was praying in my house.). Suddenly a man in radiant clothing stood before me
" Corneille, ta prière a été exaucée, et Dieu s'est souvenu de tes aumônes.
and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your gifts to the poor have been remembered before God.
Envoie donc à Joppé, et fais appeler Simon, surnommé Pierre ; il est logé dans la maison de Simon, corroyeur, près de la mer ; [il viendra te parler]. " —
Therefore send to Joppa for Simon, who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, by the sea.’
Aussitôt j'ai envoyé vers toi, et tu as bien fait de venir. Maintenant nous sommes tous réunis devant Dieu pour entendre tout ce que Dieu t'a commandé de nous dire. "
So I sent for you immediately, and you were kind enough to come. Now then, we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has instructed you to tell us.”
Alors Pierre, ouvrant la bouche, parla ainsi : " En vérité, je reconnais que Dieu ne fait point acception de personnes,
Then Peter began to speak: “I now truly understand that God does not show favoritism,
mais qu'en toute nation celui qui le craint et pratique la justice lui est agréable.
but welcomes those from every nation who fear Him and do what is right.
Il a envoyé la parole aux enfants d'Israël, en annonçant la paix par Jésus-Christ : c'est lui qui est le Seigneur de tous.
He has sent this message to the people of Israel, proclaiming the gospel of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.
Vous savez ce qui s'est passée dans toute la Judée, en commençant par la Galilée, après le baptême que Jean a prêché :
You yourselves know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee with the baptism that John proclaimed:
comment Dieu a oint de l'Esprit-Saint et de force Jésus de Nazareth, qui allait de lieu en lieu, faisant du bien et guérissant tous ceux qui étaient sous l'empire du diable ; car Dieu était avec lui.
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with Him.
Pour nous, nous sommes témoins de tout ce qu'il a fait dans les campagnes de la Judée et à Jérusalem. Ensuite ils l'ont fait mourir, en le pendant au bois.
We are witnesses of all that He did, both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem. And although they put Him to death by hanging Him on a tree,
Mais Dieu l'a ressuscité le troisième jour, et lui a donné de se faire voir,
God raised Him up on the third day and caused Him to be seen—
non à tout le peuple, mais aux témoins choisis d'avance par Dieu, à nous qui avons mangé et bu avec lui, après sa résurrection d'entre les morts.
not by all the people, but by the witnesses God had chosen beforehand, by us who ate and drank with Him after He rose from the dead.
Et il nous a commandé de prêcher au peuple et d'attester que c'est lui que Dieu a établi juge des vivants et des morts.
And He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that He is the One appointed by God to judge the living and the dead.
Tous les prophètes rendent de lui ce témoignage, que tout homme qui croit en lui reçoit par son nom la rémission de ses péchés. "
All the prophets testify about Him that everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name.”
Pierre parlait encore, lorsque le Saint-Esprit descendit sur tous ceux qui écoutaient la parole.
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard his message.
Les fidèles venus de la circoncision qui accompagnaient Pierre étaient tout hors d'eux-mêmes en voyant que le don du Saint-Esprit était répandu même sur les Gentils.
All the circumcised believers who had accompanied Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.
Car ils entendaient ceux-ci parler des langues et glorifier Dieu. Alors Pierre dit :
For they heard them speaking in tongues and exalting God. Then Peter said,
" Peut-on refuser l'eau du baptême à ces hommes qui ont reçu le Saint-Esprit aussi bien que nous ? "
“Can anyone withhold the water to baptize these people? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have!”
Et il commanda de les baptiser au nom du Seigneur Jésus-Christ. Après quoi ils le prièrent de rester quelques jours.
So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay for a few days.
