The elder, To the beloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth:
Bien-aimé, sur toutes choses je souhaite que l'état de tes affaires et de ta santé soit aussi prospère que celui de ton âme.
Beloved, I pray that in every way you may prosper and enjoy good health, as your soul also prospers.
J'ai eu bien de la joie, lorsque des frères sont arrivés et ont rendu témoignage de ta vérité, je veux dire de la manière dont tu marches dans la vérité.
For I was overjoyed when the brothers came and testified about your devotion to the truth, in which you continue to walk.
Je n'ai pas de plus grande joie que d'apprendre que mes enfants marchent dans la vérité.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
Bien-aimé, tu agis fidèlement dans tout ce que tu fais pour les frères, et particulièrement pour des frères étrangers ;
Beloved, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers, and especially since they are strangers to you.
aussi ont-ils rendu témoignage de ta charité en présence de l'Eglise. Tu feras bien de pourvoir à leur voyage d'une manière digne de Dieu ;
They have testified to the church about your love. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God.
car c'est pour son nom qu'ils sont partis, sans rien recevoir des païens.
For they went out on behalf of the Name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles.
Nous devons soutenir de tels hommes, afin de travailler avec eux pour la vérité.
Therefore we ought to support such men, so that we may be fellow workers for the truth.
J'ai écrit à l'Eglise ; mais Diotréphès, qui aime à primer parmi eux, ne nous reçoit pas.
I have written to the church about this, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will not accept our instruction.
C'est pourquoi, quand je viendrai, je lui mettrai devant les yeux les actes qu'il fait, et les méchants propos qu'il tient contre nous. Et non content de cela, il refuse lui-même d'accueillir les frères, et il empêche ceux qui voudraient les recevoir et les chasse de l'église.
So if I come, I will call attention to his malicious slander against us. And unsatisfied with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers and forbids those who want to do so, even putting them out of the church.
Bien-aimé, n'imite pas le mal, mais imite le bien. Celui qui fait le bien est de Dieu ; celui qui fait le mal n'a point vu Dieu.
Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.
Tout le monde, et la vérité elle-même, rendent un bon témoignage à Démétrius ; nous le lui rendons aussi, et tu sais que notre témoignage est vrai.
Demetrius has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself. We also testify for him, and you know that our testimony is true.
J'aurais beaucoup de choses à t'écrire, mais je ne veux pas le faire avec l'encre et la plume :
I have many things to write to you, but I would prefer not to do so with pen and ink.
