Καὶ παραγίνονται πᾶσαι αἱ φυλαὶ Ἰσραὴλ πρὸς Δαυεὶδ εἰς Χεβρὼν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ἴδου ὀστᾶ σου καὶ σάρκες σου ἡμεῖς.
Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “Here we are, your own flesh and blood.
καὶ ἐχθὲς καὶ τρίτην ὄντος Σαοὺλ βασιλέως ἐφ’ ἡμῖν σὺ ἦσθα ὁ ἐξάγων καὶ εἰσάγων τὸν Ἰσραήλ, καὶ εἶπεν Κύριος πρὸς σέ Σὺ ποιμανεῖς τὸν λαόν μου τὸν Ἰσραήλ, καὶ σὺ ἔσει εἰσηγούμενος ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰσραήλ.
Even in times past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them back. And to you the LORD said, ‘You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ruler over them.’”
καὶ ἔρχονται πάντες οἱ πρεσβύτεροι Ἰσραὴλ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα εἰς Χεβρὼν, καὶ διέθετο αὐτοῖς ὁ βασιλεὺς ΔΑυεὶδ διαθήκην ἐν Χεβρὼν ἐνώπιον κυρίου, καὶ χρίουσιν τὸν Δαυεὶδ εἰς βασιλέα ἐπὶ πάντα Ισραήλ.
So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, where King David made with them a covenant before the LORD. And they anointed him king over Israel.
Υἱὸς τριάκοντα ἐτῶν Δαυεὶδ ἐν τῷ βασιλεῦσαι αὐτόν, καὶ τεσσεράκοντα ἣ ἐβασίλευσεν·
David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years.
ἑπτὰ ἔτη καὶ ἓξ μῆνας ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν Χεβρὼν ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰούδα, καὶ τριάκοντα τρία ἔτη ἐβασίλευσεν ἐπὶ πάντα Ἰσραὴλ καὶ Ἰούδαν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ.
In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.
Καὶ ἀπῆλθεν Δαυεὶδ καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες αὐτοῦ εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ πρὸς τὸν Ἰεβουσαῖον τὸν κατοικοῦντα τὴν γῆν, καὶ ἐρρέθη τῷ Δαυείδ οὐκ εἰσελεύσει ὧδε, ὅτι ἀντέστησαν οἱ τυφλοὶ καὶ οἱ χωλοὶ λέγοντες ὅτι οὐκ εἰσελεύσεται Δαυεὶδ ὧδε.
Now the king and his men marched to Jerusalem against the Jebusites who inhabited the land. The Jebusites said to David: “You will never get in here. Even the blind and lame can repel you.” For they thought, “David cannot get in here.”
καὶ κατελάβετο Δαυεὶδ τὴν περιοχὴν Σειών, αὕτη πόλις τοῦ Δαυείδ.
Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion (that is, the City of David).
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ Πᾶς τύπτων Ἰεβουσαῖου ἁπτέσθω ἐν παραξιφίδι καὶ τοὺς χωλοὺς καὶ τοὺς τυφλοὺς καὶ τοὺς μισοῦντας τὴν ψυχὴν Δαυείδ· διὰ τοῦτο ἐροῦσιν τυφλοὶ καὶ χωλοὶ οὐκ εἰσελεύσονται εἰς οἶκον κυρίου.
On that day he said, “Whoever attacks the Jebusites must use the water shaft to reach the lame and blind who are despised by David (note: Or who are enemies of David).” That is why it is said, “The blind and the lame will never enter the palace.”
καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐν τῇ περιοχῇ, καὶ ἐκλήθη αὕτη ἡ πόλις Δαυείδ· καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν αὐτὴν πόλιν κύκλῳ ἀπὸ τῆς ἄκρας καὶ τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ.
So David took up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built it up all the way around, from the supporting terraces (note: Hebrew the Millo) inward.
καὶ διεπορεύετο Δαυεὶδ πορευόμενος καὶ μεγαλυνόμενος, καὶ Κύριος Παντοκράτωρ μετ’ αὐτοῦ.
And David became greater and greater, for the LORD God of Hosts was with him.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Χειρὰμ βασιλεὺς Τύρου γέλους πρὸς Δαυεὶδ καὶ ξύλα κέδρινα καὶ τέκτονας ξύλων καὶ τέ· κτονας λίθων, καὶ ᾠκοδόμησαν οἶκον τῷ Δαυείδ.
Now Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, along with cedar logs, carpenters, and stonemasons, and they built a palace for David.
καὶ ἔγνω ὅτι ἡτοίμασεν αὐτὸν κύριος εἰς βασιλέα ἐπὶ Ἰσραήλ, καὶ ὅτι βασιλεία αὐτοῦ διὰ τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ Ἰσραήλ.
And David realized that the LORD had established him as king over Israel and had exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.
Καὶ ἔλαβεν Δαυδὶδ ἔτι γυναῖκας καὶ παλλακὰς ἐξ μετὰ τὸ ἐλθεῖν αὐτὸν εἰς Χεβρών· καὶ ἐγένοντο τῷ Δαυεὶδ ἔτι υἱοὶ καὶ θυγατέρες.
After he had arrived from Hebron, David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, and more sons and daughters were born to him.
καὶ ταῦτα τὰ ὀνόματα τῶν γεννηθέντων αὐτῷ ἐν Σαμμοῦς καὶ Σωβὰβ καὶ Ναθὰν καὶ Σαλωμών,
These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua (note: Shammua is a variant of Shimea; see 1 Chronicles 3:5.), Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,
καὶ Ἐλεισομὰ καὶ Ἐπιδαὲ καὶ ἄν, Ἰεβαάρ, Ναγέδ, Νάφεκ, Ἰαναθά, Λεασαμύς, Βααλειμάθ, Ἐλειφάαθ.
Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet.
Καὶ ἤκουσαν ἀλλόφυλοι ὅτι κέχρισται ἠλ, καὶ ἀνέβησαν πάντες οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι ζητεῖν τὸν Δαυείδ· καὶ ἤκουσεν ΔΑυείδ, καὶ κατέβη εἰς τὴν περιοχήν.
When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, they all went in search of him; but David learned of this and went down to the stronghold.
καὶ οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι παραγίνονται καὶ συνέπεσαν εἰς τὴν κοιλάδα τῶν Τιτάνων.
Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim.
καὶ ἠρώτησεν Δαυεὶδ διὰ κυρίου λέγων Εἰ ἀναβῶ πρὸς τοὺς ἀλλοφύλους καὶ παραδώσεις αὐτοὺς εἰς τὰς χεῖράς μου; καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Δαυείδ Ἀνάβαινε, ὅτι παραδιδοὺς παραδώσω τοὺς ἀλλοφύλους εἰς τὰς χεῖράς σου.
So David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” “Go up,” replied the LORD, “for I will surely deliver the Philistines into your hand.”
καὶ ἦλθεν Δαυεὶδ ἐκ τῶν ἐπάνω διακοπῶν ἔκοψεν τοὺς ἀλλοφύλους ἐκεῖ, καὶ εἶπεν Δαυείδ Διέκοψεν Κύριος τοὺς ἐχθροὺς ἀλλοφύλους ἐνώπιον ἐμοῦ ὡς διακόπτεται ὕδατα· διὰ τοῦτο ἐκλήθη τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου Ἐπάνω διακοπῶν.
So David went to Baal-perazim (note: Baal-perazim means The Lord Bursts Out.), where he defeated the Philistines and said, “Like a bursting flood, the LORD has burst out against my enemies before me.” So he called that place Baal-perazim.
καὶ καταλιμπάνουσιν ἐκεῖ τοὺς θεοὺς αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐλάβοσαν αὐτοὺς Δαυδὶδ καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ.
There the Philistines abandoned their idols, and David and his men carried them away.
Καὶ προσέθεντο ἔτι ἀλλόφυλοι τοῦ ἀναβῆναι, κοὶ συνέπεσαν ἐν τῇ κοιλάδι τῶν Τιτάνων.
Once again the Philistines came up and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim.
καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν Δαυεὶδ διὰ Κυρίου, καὶ εἶπεν κύριος οὐκ ἀναβήσει εἰς σιν αὐτῶν, ἀποστρέφου ἀπ’ αὐτῶν καὶ παρέσει αὐτοῖς πλησίον τοῦ κλαυθμῶνος.
So David inquired of the LORD, who answered, “Do not march straight up, but circle around behind them and attack them in front of the balsam trees (note: Or aspen trees or poplar trees; also in verse 24).
καὶ ἱστᾶι ἐν τῷ ἀκόῦσαί σε τὴν φωνὴν τοῦ συνκλεισμοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἄλσους τοῦ κλαυθμῶνος, τότε καταβήσει πρὸς αὐτούς, ὅτι τότε ἐξελεύσεται κύριος ἔμπροσθέν σου κόπτειν ἐν τῷ πολέμω τῶν ἀλλοφύλων.
As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, move quickly, because this will mean that the LORD has gone out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.”
καὶ ἐποίησεν Δαυεὶδ καθὼς ἐνετείλατο αὐτῷ κύριος, καὶ ἐπάταξεν τοὺς ἀλλοφύλους ἀπὸ Γαβαὼν ἕως τῆς γῆς Γαζηρά.
So David did as the LORD had commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from Gibeon (note: LXX (see also 1 Chronicles 14:16); Hebrew Geba) to Gezer.
