Καὶ κπροςέθετο ὀργὴν Κύριος ἐκκαῆναι ἐν Ἰσραήλ, καὶ ἐπέσεισεν τὸν Δαυεὶδ ἐν αὐτοῖς λέγων Βάδιζε ἀρίθμησον τὸν Ἰσραὴλ καὶ τὸν Ἰουδά.
Again the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He stirred up David against them, saying, “Go and take a census of Israel and Judah.”
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς πρὸς Ἰωὰβ ἄρχοντα τῆς ἰσχύος τὸν μετ’ αὐτοῦ Δίελθε δὴ πάσας φυλὰς Ἰσραὴλ ἀπὸ Δὰν καὶ ἕως Βηρςάβεε καὶ ἐπίσκεψαι τὸν λαόν, καὶ γνώσομαι τὸν ἀριθμὸν τοῦ λαοῦ.
So the king said to Joab the commander of his army, who was with him (note: LXX to Joab and the army commanders with him), “Go now throughout the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beersheba and register the troops, so that I may know their number.”
καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωὰβ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Καὶ προσθείη Κύριος ὁ θεὸς πρὸς τὸν λαὸν ὥσπερ αὐτοὺς καὶ ὥσπερ αὐτοὺς ἑκατονταπλαςίονα, καὶ ὀφθαλμοὶ τοῦ κυρίου μου τοῦ βασιλέως ὁρῶντες· καὶ ὁ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεὺς ἵνα τί βούλεται ἐν τῷ λόγῳ τούτῳ;
But Joab replied to the king, “May the LORD your God multiply the troops a hundred times over, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king want to do such a thing?”
καὶ ὑπερίσχυσεν ὁ λόγος τοῦ βασιλέως πρὸς Ἰωὰβ καὶ εἰς τοὺς ἄρχοντας τῆς δυνάμεως· καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Ἰωὰβ καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες τῆς ἰσχύος ἐνώπιον τοῦ βασιλέως ἐπισκέψασθαι τὸν λαὸν Ἰσραήλ.
Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against Joab and against the commanders of the army. So Joab and the commanders of the army departed from the presence of the king to register the troops of Israel.
καὶ διέβησαν τὸν Ἰορδάνην, καὶ παρενέβαλον ἐν Ἀροὴλ ἐκ δεξιῶν τῆς πὸλεως τῆς ἐν μέσῳ τῆς φάραγγος Γὰδ καὶ Ἐλιέζερ.
They crossed the Jordan and camped near Aroer, south of the town in the middle of the valley, and proceeded toward Gad and Jazer.
καὶ ἦλθον εἰς τὴν Γαλαὰδ καὶ εἰς τὴν Φαβαςὼν ἥ ἐστιν Ναδασαί, καὶ παρεγένοντο εἰς Δὰν Εἰδὰν καὶ Οὐδάν, καὶ ἐκύκλωσαν εἰς Σιδῶνα·
Then they went to Gilead and the land of Tahtim-hodshi (note: Hebrew; some LXX manuscripts to Gilead and to the land of the Hittites), and on to Dan-jaan and around to Sidon.
καὶ ἦλθαν εἰς. Μάψαρ Τύρου καὶ πάσας τὰς πόλεις τοῦ Εὑαίου καὶ τοῦ Χαναναίου· καὶ ἦλθαν κατὰ νότον Ἰούδα εἰς Βηρςάβεε,
They went toward the fortress of Tyre and all the cities of the Hivites and Canaanites. Finally, they went on to the Negev of Judah (note: Or to the south of Judah), to Beersheba.
καὶ περιώδευσαν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ· καὶ παρεγένοντο ἀπὸ τέλους ἐννέα μηνῶν καὶ εἴκοσι ἡμερῶν εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ·
At the end of nine months and twenty days, having gone through the whole land, they returned to Jerusalem.
καὶ ἔδωκεν Ἰωὰβ τὸν ἀριθμὸν τῆς ἐπισκέψεως τοῦ λαοῦ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα· καὶ ἐγένετο Ἰσραὴλ ὀκτακόσιαι χιλιάδες ἀνδρῶν δυνάμεως σπωμένων ῥομφαίαν, καὶ ἀνὴρ Ἰούδα πεντακόσιαι χιλιάδες ἀνδρῶν μαχητῶν.
And Joab reported to the king the total number of the troops. In Israel there were 800,000 men of valor who drew the sword, and in Judah there were 500,000.
Καὶ ἐπάταξεν καρδία Δαυεὶδ αὐτὸν μετὰ τὸ ἀριθμῆσαι τὸν λαόν· καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Κύριον Ἥμαρτον σφόδρα ὅ ἐποίησα· νῦν, Κύριε, παραβίβασον δὴ τὴν ἀνομίαν τοῦ δούλου σου, ὅτι ἐμωράθην σφόδρα.
After David had numbered the troops, his conscience was stricken and he said to the LORD, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, O LORD, I beg You to take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.”
καὶ ἀνέστη Δαυεὶδ τὸ πρωί· καὶ λόγος Κυρίου ἐγένετο πρὸς Γὰδ τὸν προφήτην τὸν ὁρῶντα Δαυεὶδ λέγων
When David got up in the morning, the word of the LORD had come to Gad the prophet, David’s seer:
Πορεύθητι καὶ λάλησον πρὸς Δαυεὶδ λέγων Τάδε λέγει Κύριος Τρία ἐγώ εἰμι αἴρω ἐπὶ σέ, καὶ ἔκλεξαι σεαυτῷ ἓν ἐξ αὐτῶν καὶ ποιήσω σοι.
“Go and tell David that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am offering you three options. Choose one of them, and I will carry it out against you.’”
καὶ εἰσῆλθεν Γὰδ πρὸς Δαυείδ, καὶ ἀνήγγειλεν αὐτῷ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἔκλεξαι σεαυτῷ γενέσθαι, εἰ ἔλθῃ σοι τρία ἔτη λιμὸς ἐν τῇ γῇ σου, ἢ τρεῖς μῆνας φεύγειν σε ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἐχθρῶν σου καὶ ἔσονται διώκοντές σε, ἢ γενέσθαι τρεῖς ἡμέρας θάνατον ἐν τῇ γῇ σου· νῦν οὖν γνῶθι καὶ ἴδε τί ἀποκριθῶ τῷ ἀποστέλαντί με ῥῆμα.
So Gad went and said to David, “Do you choose to endure three (note: LXX (see also 1 Chronicles 21:12); Hebrew seven) years of famine in your land, three months of fleeing the pursuit of your enemies, or three days of plague upon your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should reply to Him who sent me.”
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Γάδ Στενά μοι πάντοθεν σφόδρα ἐστίν· ἐμπεσοῦμαι δὴ ἐν χειρὶ Κυρίου, ὅτι πολλοὶ οἱ οἰκτειρμοὶ αὐτοῦ σφόδρα, εἰς δὲ χεῖρας ἀνθρώπου οὐ μὴ ἐμπέσω.
David answered Gad, “I am deeply distressed. Please, let us fall into the hand of the LORD, for His mercies are great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men.”
καὶ ἐξελέξατο εαυτῷ Δαυεὶδ τὸν θάνατον· καὶ ἡμέραι θερισμοῦ πυρῶν, καὶ ἔδωκεν Κύριος ἐν Ἰσραὴλ θάνατον ἀπὸ πρωίθεν ἕως ὥρας ἀρίστου· καὶ ἤρξατο Ἡ θραῦσις ἐν τῷ λαῷ, καὶ ἀπέθανεν ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ ἀπὸ Δὰν καὶ ἕως Βηρσάβεε, ἐβδομήκοντα χιλιάδες ἀνδρῶν,
So the LORD sent a plague upon Israel from that morning until the appointed time, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beersheba died (note: Literally and of the people from Dan to Beersheba, seventy thousand men died).
καὶ ἐξέτεινεν ὁ ἄγγελος τοῦ θεοῦ τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ τοῦ διαφθεῖραι αὐτήν, καὶ πρεκλήθη Κύριος ἐπὶ τῇ κακίᾳ καὶ εἲπεν τῷ ἀγγέλῳ τῷ διαφθείροντι ἐν τῷ λαῷ Πολὺ νῦν, ἄνες τὴν χεῖρά σου· καὶ ὁ ἄγγελος Κυρίου ἦν παρὰ τῷ ἄλῳ Ὀρνὰ τοῦ Ἰεβουσαίου.
But when the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the LORD relented from the calamity and said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand now!” At that time the angel of the LORD was by the threshing floor of Araunah (note: Araunah is a variant of Ornan; see 1 Chronicles 21:15 and 2 Chronicles 3:1.) the Jebusite.
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Κύριον, ἐν τῷ ἰδεῖν αὐτὸν τὸν ἄγγελον τύπτοντα ἐν τῷ λαῷ, καὶ εἶπεν Ἰδοὺ ἐγώ εἰμι ἠδίκησα, καὶ οὖτοι τὰ πρόβατα τί ἐποίησαν; γενέσθω δὴ ἡ χείρ σου ἐν ἐμοὶ καὶ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ πατρός μου.
When David saw the angel striking down the people, he said to the LORD, “Surely I, the shepherd, have sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Please, let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house.”
Καὶ ἦλθεν Γὰδ πρὸς Δαυεὶδ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἀνάβηθι καὶ στῆσον τῷ κυρίῳ θυσιαστήριον ἐν τῷ ἅλωνι Ὀρνὰ τοῦ Ἰεβουσαίου.
And that day Gad came to David and said to him, “Go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.”
καὶ ἀνέβη Δαυεὶδ κατὰ τὸν λόγον Γὰδ καθ’ ὃν τρόπον ἐνετείλατο αὐτῷ Κύριος.
So David went up at the word of Gad, just as the LORD had commanded.
καὶ διέκυψεν Ὀρνά, καὶ εἶδεν τὸν βασιλέα καὶ τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ παραπορευομένους ἐπάνω αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Ὀρνὰ καὶ προσεκύνησεν τῷ βασιλεῖ ἐπὶ πρόσπον αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν.
When Araunah looked out and saw the king and his servants coming toward him, he went out and bowed facedown before the king.
καὶ εἶπεν Ὀρνά Τί ὃτι ἦλθεν ὁ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεὺς πρὸς τὸν δοῦλον αὐτοῦ; καὶ εἶπεν Δαυείδ Κτήσασθαι παρὰ σοῦ τὸν ἃλωνα, τοῦ οἰκοδομῆσαι θυσιατήριον τῷ κυρίῳ. καὶ συνεσχέθη ἡ θραῦσις ἐπάνω τοῦ λαοῦ.
“Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” Araunah said. “To buy your threshing floor,” David replied, “that I may build an altar to the LORD, so that the plague upon the people may be halted.”
καὶ εἶπεν Ὀρνὰ πρὸς Δαυείδ Λαβέτω καὶ ἐνενεγκέτω ὀ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεὺς τῷ κυρίῳ τὸ ἀγαθὸν ἐν ὀφθαλιμοῖς αὐτοῦ· ἰδοὺ οἱ βόες εἰς ὁλοκαύτωμα, καὶ οἱ τροχοὶ καὶ τὰ σκεύη τῶν βοῶν εἰς ξύλα.
Araunah said to David, “May my lord the king take whatever seems good to him and offer it up. Here are the oxen for a burnt offering and the threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood.
τὰ πάντα ἒδωκεν Ὀρνὰ τῷ βασιλεῖ· καὶ εἶπεν Ὀρνὰ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Κύριος ὁ θεύς σου εὐλογήσια σε.
O king, Araunah gives all these to the king.” He also said to the king, “May the LORD your God accept you.”
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς πρὸς Ὀρνά Οὐχί, ὃτι ἀλλὰ κτώμενος κτήσομαι παρὰ σοῦ ἐν ἀλλάγματι, καὶ οὐκ ἀνοίσω τῷ κυρίῳ μου θεῷ μου ὁλκαύτωμα δωρεάν. καὶ ἐκτήσατο δαυεὶδ τὸν αλωνα καὶ τοὺς βόας ἐν ἀργυρίῳ σίκλων πεντήκοντα.
“No,” replied the king, “I insist on paying a price, for I will not offer to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver (note: 50 shekels is approximately 1.26 pounds or 569.8 grams of silver.).
καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν ἐκεὶ Δαυεὶδ θυσιαστήριον Κυίῳ, καὶ ἀνήνεγκεν ὁλοκαυτώσεις καὶ εἰρηνικάς· καὶ προςέθηκεν Σαλωμὼν ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον ἐπ᾿ ἐσχάτῳ, ὃτι μικρὸν ἦν ἐν πρώτοις. καὶ ἐπήκουσεν Κύιος τῇ γῇ, καὶ αυνεσχέθη ἡ θραῦσις ἐπάνωθεν Ἰσραήλ.
And there he built an altar to the LORD and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then the LORD answered the prayers on behalf of the land, and the plague upon Israel was halted.
