Καὶ ἐγένετο λιμὸς ἐν ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις Δαυεὶδ τρία ἔτη, ἐνιαυτὸς ἐχόμενος ἐνιαυτοῦ, καὶ ἐζήτησεν Δαυεὶδ τὸ πρόσωπον τοῦ κυρίου· καὶ εἶπεν Κύριος Ἐπὶ Σαοὴλ καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ ἀδικία διὰ πὸ αὐτὸν θανάτῳ αἰμάτων, περὶ οὖ ἐθανάτωσεν τοῦς Γαβαωνείτας.
During the reign of David there was a famine for three successive years, and David sought the face of the LORD. And the LORD said, “It is because of the blood shed by Saul and his family, because he killed the Gibeonites.”
καὶ ἐκάλεσεν ὁ βασιεὺς Δαυεὶδ τοῦς Γαβαωνείτας καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· καὶ οἱ Γαβαωνεῖται οὐχ υἱοὶ Ἰσραήλ εεἰσιν, ὅτι ἀλλ’ ἣ ἐκ τοῦ αἴματος τοῦ Ἀμορραίου, καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ Ἱσραὴλ ὤωοσαν αὐτοῖς· καὶ ἐζήτησεν Σαοὺλ πατάξαι αὐτοὸς ἐν τῷ ξηλῶσαι αὐτὸν τοὺς υίοὺς Ἰσραήλ καὶ Ἰούδα·
At this, David summoned the Gibeonites and spoke to them. (Now the Gibeonites were not Israelites, but a remnant of the Amorites. The Israelites had taken an oath concerning them, but in his zeal for Israel and Judah, Saul had sought to kill them.)
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς τοῦς Γαβαωνείτας Τί ποιήσω ὑμῖν καὶ ἐν τίνι ἐξιλάσωμαι, καὶ εὐλογήσετε τὴν κληρονομίαν Κυρίου;
So David asked the Gibeonites, “What shall I do for you? How can I make amends so that you may bless the inheritance of the LORD?”
καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ οἱ Γαβαωνεῖται Οὐκ ἔστιν ἡμῖν ἀργύριον καὶ χρυσίον μετὰ Σαοὶλ καὶ μετὰ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοὺ, καὶ οἰκ ἔστιν ἡμῖν ἀνὴρ θαντῶσαι ἐν Ἰσραήλ. καὶ εἶπεν Τί ὑμεῖς λέγετε καὶ ποιήσω ὑμῖν;
The Gibeonites said to him, “We need no silver or gold from Saul or his house, nor should you put to death anyone in Israel for us.” “Whatever you ask, I will do for you,” he replied.
καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Ὁ ἀνὴρ συνετέλεσεν ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐδίωξεν ἡμᾶς, ὃς παρελογίσατο ἐξολεθρεῦσαι ἠμᾶς· ἀφανίσωμεν αὐτὸν τοῦ μὴ ἐστάναι αὐτὸν ἐν παυτὶ ἐρίῳ Ἰσραήλ.
And they answered the king, “As for the man who consumed us and plotted against us to exterminate us from existing within any border of Israel,
δότω ἡμῖν ἐπτὰ ἄνδρας ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐξηλιάσωμεν αὐτοὸς τῷ κυρίῳ ἐν Γαβαὼν Σαοὺλ ἐκλεκτοὺς Κυρίου. καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἐγὼ δώσω.
let seven of his male descendants be delivered to us so that we may hang them (note: Or expose them or execute them; similarly in verse 9) before the LORD at Gibeah of Saul, the chosen of the LORD.” “I will give them to you,” said the king.
καὶ ἐφείσατο ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐπὶ Μεμφιβόσθε υἱὸν Ἰωναθὰν υἱοῦ Σαοὺλ διὰ τὸν ὅρκον κυρίου τὸν ἀνὰ μέσον αὐτῶν, καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον Δαυεὶδ καὶ ἀνὰ μ΄σον Ἰωυαθὰν υἱοῦ Σαούλ
Now the king spared Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the oath before the LORD between David and Jonathan son of Saul.
καὶ ἔκαβεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τοῦς δύο υἱοῦς ‘Ρεσφὰ θυγατρὸς Αἰὰ οὕς ἔτεκεν τῷ Σαούλ, τὸν Ἐρμωνοεὶ καὶ τὸν τὸν Μεμφιβόσθε, καὶ τοὺς πέντε υίοὺς Μιχὸλ θυγατρὸς Σαοὺλ οὓς ἔτεκεν τῷ Σερεὶ υἱῷ Βερζελλεὶ τῷ Μωουλαθεί,
But the king took Armoni and Mephibosheth, the two sons whom Rizpah daughter of Aiah had borne to Saul, as well as the five sons whom Merab (note: Two Hebrew manuscripts, some LXX manuscripts, and Syriac (see also 1 Samuel 18:19); most Hebrew and LXX manuscripts Michal) daughter of Saul had borne to Adriel son of Barzillai the Meholathite.
καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτούς ἐν χειρὶ τῶν Γαβαωνειτῶν· καὶ ἐξηλίασαν αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ ὄρει ἔναντι Κυρίου, καὶ ἔπεσαν οἱ ἐπτὰ αὐτοὶ ἑπὶ τὸ αὐτό· καὶ αὐτοὶ δὲ ἐθανατώθησαν ἐν ἡμέεραις θερισμοῦ ἐν πρώτοις, ἐν ἀρχῇ θερισμοῦ κριθὼν.
And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them on the hill before the LORD. So all seven of them fell together; they were put to death in the first days of the harvest, at the beginning of the barley harvest.
καὶ ἔλαβεν ῥεσφὰ θυγάτηρ Αἰὰ τὸν σάκκον καὶ ἔπηξεν αὐτῇ πρὸς τὴν πέτραν ἐν ἀρχῇ θερισμοῦ κριθῶν ἔως ἔσταξεν ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ὕδωρ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, καὶ οὐκ ἐδωκεν τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καταπαῦσαι ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ἡμέρας καὶ τὰ θηρία τοῦ ἀγροῦ νυκτός.
And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth and spread it out for herself on a rock. From the beginning of the harvest until the rain from heaven poured down on the bodies, she did not allow the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.
καὶ ἀπηγγέλη τῷ Δαυεὶδ ὅσα ἐποίησεν Ῥεσφὰ θυγάτηρ Αἰὰ παλλακὴ Σαούλ· καὶ ἐξελύθησαν, καὶ κατέλαβεν αὐτοὺς Δὰν υἱὸς Ἰωὰ ἐκ τῶν ἀπολλόνων τῶν γιγάντων.
When David was told what Saul’s concubine Rizpah, daughter of Aiah, had done,
καὶ ἐπορεύθη Δαυεὶδ καὶ ἔλαβεν τὰ ὀστᾶ Σαοὺλ καὶ τὰ ὀστᾶ Ἰωναθὰν τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ παρὰ τῶν ἀνδρῶν υἱῶν Ἰαβεὶς Γαλαάδ, οἳ ἔκλεψαν αὐτοῦς ἐκ τῆς πλατείας Βαίθ, ὅτι ἔστησαν αὐτοὺς ἐκεῖ οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ᾗ ἐπάταξαν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι τὸν Σαοὺλ ἐν Γελβοῦε.
he went and took the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan from the men of Jabesh-gilead, who had stolen them from the public square of Beth-shan where the Philistines had hung the bodies after they had struck down Saul at Gilboa.
καὶ ἀνήνεγκεν ἐκεῖθεν τὰ ὀστᾶ Σαοὺλ καὶ τὰ ὀστᾶ Ἰωναθὰν τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ, καὶ συνήγαγεν τὰ ὀστᾶ τῶν ἐξηλιασμένων.
So David had the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan brought from there, and they also gathered the bones of those who had been hanged.
καὶ ἔθαψαν τὰ ὀστᾶ Σαοὺλ καὶ τὰ ὀστᾶ Ἰωναθὰν τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ τῶν ἡλιασθέντων τῶν ἐν γῇ Βενιαμεὶν ἐν τῇ πλευρᾷ ἐν τῷ τάφῳ Κεὶς τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐποίησαν πάντα ὅσα ἐνετείλατο ὁ βασιλεύς, καὶ ἐπήκουσεν ὁ θεὸς τῇ γῇ μετὰ ταῦτα.
And they buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan in Zela in the land of Benjamin, in the tomb of Saul’s father Kish. After they had done everything the king had commanded, God answered their prayers for the land.
Καὶ ἐγενήθη ἔτι πόλεμος τοῖς ἀλλοφύλοις μετὰ Ἰσραήλ· καὶ κατέβη Δαυεὶδ καὶ οἱ παῖδες αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπολέμησαν μετὰ τῶν ἀλλοφύλων· καὶ ἐπορεύθη Δαυείδ.
Once again the Philistines waged war against Israel, and David and his servants went down and fought against the Philistines. But David became exhausted.
καὶ Ἰεσβὶ ὃς ἦν ἐν τοῖς ἐκγόνοις τοῦ Ῥαφά, καὶ ὁ σταθμὸς τοῦ δόρατος αὐτοῦ τριακοσίων σίκλων ὁλκῇ χαλκοῦ, καὶ αὐτὸς περιεζωσμένος κορύνην, καὶ διενοεῖτο πατάξαι τὸν Δαυείδ.
Then Ishbi-benob, a descendant of Rapha (note: Or the giant; also in verses 18, 20, and 22), whose bronze spear weighed three hundred shekels and who was bearing a new sword, resolved to kill David.
καὶ ἐβοήθησεν αὐτῷ Ἀβεσσὰ υἱὸς Σαρουίας, καὶ ἐπάταξεν τὸν ἀλλόφυλον καὶ ἐθανάτωσεν αὐτόν· τότε ὤμοσαν οἱ ἄνδρες Δαυεὶδ λέγοντες Οὐκ ἐξελεύσῃ ἔτι μεθ’ ἡμῶν εἰς πόλεμον, καὶ οὐ μὴ σβέσῃς τὸν λύχνον Ἰσραήλ.
But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to his aid, struck the Philistine, and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him, “You must never again go out with us to battle, so that the lamp of Israel may not be extinguished.”
Καὶ ἐγενήθη μετὰ ταῦτα ἔτι πόλεμος ἐν Γὲθ μετὰ τῶν ἀλλοφύλων· τότε ἐπάταξεν Ὀεβοχὰ ὁ Ἁστατωθεὶ τὸν Σὲφ τὸν ἐν τοῖς ἐκγόνοις τοῦ Ῥαφά.
Some time later at Gob, there was another battle with the Philistines. At that time Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Saph (note: Saph is a variant of Sippai; see 1 Chronicles 20:4.), a descendant of Rapha.
καὶ ἐγένετο ὁ πόλεμος ἐν Ῥὸμ μετὰ τῶν ἀλλοφύλων· καὶ ἐπάταξεν Ἐλεανὰν υἱὸς Ἀριωργεὶμ ὁ βαιθλεεμμείτης τὸν Γοδολίαν τὸν Χετταῖον, καὶ τὸ ξύλον τοῦ δόρατος αὐτοῦ ὡς ἀντίον ὑφαινόντων.
Once again there was a battle with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan son of Jair (note: See 1 Chronicles 20:5; Hebrew Jaare-oregim) the Bethlehemite killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.
καὶ ἐγένετο ἔτι πόλεμος ἐν Γέθ· καὶ ἦν ἀνὴρ Μαδών. καὶ οἱ δάκτυλοι τῶν χειρῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ οἱ δάκτυλοι τῶμ ποδῶν αὐτοῦ ἓξ καὶ ἕξ, εἴκοσι τέσσαρες ἀριθμῷ· καί γε αὐτὸς ἐτέχθη τῷ Ῥαφά.
And there was also a battle at Gath, where there was a man of great stature with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in all. He too was descended from Rapha,
καὶ ὠνείδισεν τὸν Ἰσραήλ, καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτὸν Ἰωναθὰν υἱὸς Σεμεεὶ ἀδελφοῦ Δαυείδ.
and when he taunted Israel, Jonathan the son of David’s brother Shimei (note: Shimei is a variant of Shammah, Shimeah, and Shimea; see 1 Samuel 16:9, 2 Samuel 13:3, and 1 Chronicles 2:13.) killed him.
οἱ τέσσαρες οὗτοι ἐτέχθησαν ἀπόγονοι τῶν γιγάντων ἐν Γὲθ τῷ Ῥαφὰ οἶκος, καὶ ἔπεσαν ἐν χειρὶ Δαυεὶδ καὶ ἐν χειρὶ τῶν δούλων αὐτοῦ.
So these four descendants of Rapha in Gath fell at the hands of David and his servants.
